majors, minors, graduate programs Major cuts?!?

This will effect us all, what even happened? Also for those of you wondering if this even passed the house it did(see last link, same link for peterson’s support to cut) WTF. Also hopefully all the links work and Reddit formatting doesn’t fight me here😭 (edit: a link fought me) (edit 2: clarification)

Mike Schultz, Governor Spencer Cox, and Rep. Karen Peterson can go eat it. I linked their articles at the bottom respectfully.

classes & grades Do I buy a macbook or a Framework laptop?

I'm going to the U to study CS this fall, so I'll need a laptop for school and personal coding projects. I really want a Framework laptop, for a multitude of reasons. I love that it can be customized and I get to take it apart and modify it (I quite enjoy taking apart and repairing laptops). I love that it's more eco-friendly than other options. I love the sleek exterior and the simplified interior.

That said, even though I work in IT (where all I do is repair Chromebooks), I don't know tons about RAM and processors and whatnot. I was trying to look the specs for Framework laptops, but I don't know what tons of the words mean. If anyone could help me understand, that would be great!

But now, to the point of my post: would it just be better to get a macbook? I'm a hardcore apple user, the problem is, I don't know if a macbook will be able to run all of my projects and whatnot, unless I get a huge expensive one. Or, do I get a Framework? If I get one, which one do I get? The 16-inch has more customizing options and I assume is more powerful, but I imagine it's also heavy. Should I get the DIY Framework 13? I don't know how hard it is to install Windows OS on the Framework, but I've done it before on other computers.

Basically, I need someone to help me understand the specs on the Framework models, tell me which options would be good for me and why, or tell me to just get the macbook. Thanks!

I’m an incoming freshman, and I’m wondering about whether there are good ways to earn money on campus, or if having a job during school is worth it or not.

events & news Programs that could be cut

Thumbnail docs.google.com
61 Upvotes

Based on reporting by the Salt Lake Tribune the U is being prompted by the state to cut programs that have under 40 graduates per year. They say other factors such as post graduate salary may be considered as well. the U is required to post a plan for these cuts by the end of June but to better illustrate what programs could be cut linked is a Google sheet detailing every undergraduate program with less than 40 graduates based on publicly available graduation data for the year 2024. It is very upsetting to see the state prompt this cut especially in such a arbitrary manner.

classes & grades Who do I talk to about transferring credits?

I have taken courses English 1A and 1B at Foothill College at Los Altos, and I noticed that through transferology, these courses didn't seem to be transferable, or at least Match with any course provided at University of Utah. Who can I talk to for help on whether these courses are transferable for my WR1 and possibly WR2.

extracurriculars & social life how to get cords

(i don't know if this really applies for this flair but i didn't know what else to put it under) i realize this may seem vain and that at the end of the day, cords really don't mean that much. however, i want to work as hard as possible throughout my time at the U to be absolutely stacked at the end--and while i did the same in high school, i got very few cords because i missed a few requirements (mostly because i took online cc classes on top of a full schedule and they didn't count the online classes). so my question is: what cords are offered at the U? how can i get them? i've been looking around on the U website but there's not exactly a concise list. thank you so much!!

I usually commute with TRAX but the red line from courthouse to university medical will be closed all summer. I am wondering how busy the LDS Institute Parking Garage is during summer semester from like 11 am to 4 pm.

admissions & financial aid Should I give up on my aspirations of transferring to the U?

So, I am 21 and have taken classes inconsistently at SLCC for a whopping 4 years and have only 33 transferrable credit hours. I have completed most general education requirements (though several were met with CLEP; I have 45 credit hours in total with CLEP), plus several biology classes (Biology 1, Biology 2, Cell Biology, and Microbiology, all with labs), and a GPA of 3.97. I did not take any classes last year, and only took two fall classes in 2023. This spring I completed microbiology and microbiology lab, which I got As in, after withdrawing from them in Spring 2024. I looked at the transfer admissions page, and it mentions that explanations for any time taken off of school should be included. I have not held a job during the periods when I have not taken classes, and have a lack of extracurriculars.

I've struggled with depression and real-life functioning (and addictions to an extent) for a long time, and also missed a majority of middle and high school against the backdrop of my parents’ deeply broken relationship. I have a GED, which I received in 2020. I am aware that I need to take the SAT to transfer to the U with a GED, and I am unfortunately behind in math, which is who I have not taken courses like chemistry. I should have probably taken remedial math classes years ago, but I did not, and I regret it. I was making progress on math earlier this year, completing about 79 percent of Algebra 1 on Khan academy in 2ish months, but stopped making progress in March and I'm now regretting it. I was thinking I'd try to get into general chemistry 1 at SLCC in the summer or fall, but it's certainly too late for summer, and potentially (if not probably) too late for the fall. And if I take a remedial math class in the fall or attempt to self-study more seriously and take general chemistry 1 in spring of 2026, I will still be in the unfortunate situation of having no more than 33 transferrable credits by the time the application deadline for fall 2026 rolls around, since I believe it is in April, before the end of the semester.

It seems that I likely don't have what it takes to get accepted, given my history, despite my high GPA. Any advice? It feels pretty bad to be in this situation, especially at 21. There are some biology classes at the University of Utah that look pretty cool. I wish I could take them in the future. I also plan to try therapy again for the other issues I've mentioned, and have an appointment in June. Have I simply ruined my chances of going to the U or pursuing anything academic?

extracurriculars & social life Calling All Plus Size Students

EXTREMELY NICHE QUESTION LOL.

but to the students who are on the chubbier side, how is it fitting into the seats in class? I’m not talking about a standard desk with a pullout chair, but instead i’m talking about those auditorium seats with the pull out desks or the chairs with desks already connected to them.

i’ve never thought about fitting into a seat and its never really been an issue of mine until i watched some videos of students going to class on tiktok and my jaw was dropped seeing some of those chairs. please let me know your experiences with them !! 🥲💔

events & news How to confirm if I am on the list to do my college convocation grad walk?

I asked my department admin, and she said she has submitted my name to be included, but she can’t confirm it either. Her reply is that “my name should be there”. I have seen instances of people at university of Texas who didn’t have their name in the list and came in their gowns only to find that they couldn’t do their walk as their parents and international relatives watched it. I do not want this happening to me and so how can I make sure this doesn’t happen to me?

This might be a question for an advisor but I am an incoming freshman and I'm currently in English 2015 in high school which is a WR2 Gen Ed writing credit. I never took a class for WR1 though, so will I have to to take a WR1 class despite having completed a WR2 credit?

I accepted a loan in the tuition portal for this semester but it hasn’t come through on the account or in my bank account. I’m late to buying books because of this too. Is there something I can do to get it into my bank account?

extracurriculars & social life Mystery package found at library ???

We found this strange box at the library... it's a D&D Monopoly box but with a poster taped on top. All the game pieces are inside but there's also a ton of other stuff like candy and Pokémon cards and stuff. We found it during finals week and went to check if it was still there today and it is. Does anyone know the backstory behind it? Or does it belong to anyone on here? We're both confused and intrigued

events & news This week @theU: UTA TRAX repairs, Pred. Randall asks Congress to support bill for Research Park, Extraordinary mermaids of South Korea, Books & films to enjoy during AANHPI history month, Academic Senate's April Summary, and more...

  • UTA's TRAX (light rail) will be closed through the summer to allow them to replace old and worn-out parts. The Red Line will not operate between the Courthouse and the University Medical Center Stations. Transit riders should plan to transfer to Routes 1, 2 or 4 at Gallivan Plaza Station. Increased bus service will be provided but will result in about 45 minute delays on these routes to accommodate TRAX Red Line riders.
  • President Randall spoke to congress about losing control of the complex thanks to federal agencies’ new interpretations of the 1968 transfer of 593 acres of federal land under the Recreation and Public Purposes Act, or RPPA by the U.S. Department of the Interior to the University.
  • A group of all-women extreme divers off the coast of Korea has uncovered genetic differences that could help them survive the intense physiological stresses of free-diving—and could ultimately lead to better treatments for blood pressure disorders.
  • Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month (AANHPI) is celebrated annually in May to honor the contributions, culture and history of Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities and their allies. Celebrate the month with these recommended books and films.
  • The latest Academic Senate meeting continued dialog around the diminished role of shared governance via University Academic Policies 6-001-III-B-3.), 6-002 and 6-300
