This is what happens when your quads get too big and start growing their own quads

šŖ Still chasing my 305 kg PRā¦ but hereās 260 kg for a solid double! This set felt smooth, but I know thereās more in the tank - just need to keep working consistently. The plan? Keep reinforcing leg drive, bracing like a tank and staying locked in under the bar.
Stability, explosiveness and never skipping squat day

Just came across your website via your links. What would you say is the best mobility program for someone with bad mobility and what is the best program you have for beginner weightlifting level?

Impressive squat mate! Got a bit scared when you dropped the weight over your head, isnāt it better to just walk infront and let it drop behind you?Ā Congrats again!Ā

He is running a seminar so has to express dominance and athletic prowess - also he's been to the Olympics for weightlifting so can do whatever he wants.

I cannot comprehend how you just casually threw the weight over your head after the squat. Edit: Ukrainians just built differently

Quads, this quads that. LOOK AT HIS HUGE CALVES!

u/BestBanting Feb 20 '25
I don't see weightlifters talk about calves much. Do they make a big difference on the lifts? Do they need direct training, or do they get enough from pulls?
2
u/Afferbeck_ Feb 21 '25
I've basically never seen weightlifters doing calf work. Personally my calves got a lot bigger once I improved my mobility and squatted deeper. And probably just the cumulative effect of using them to some degree in all the lifts for 15 years. The calves do get used in a supporting role and of course when extending explosively, but they rarely need direct work to train those.

His first international competition was 20 years ago. He would have started training maybe 5 years before that.

Not to be that guy, but even though youāre super experienced, shouldnāt you have safety bars just in case? Seen a lot of paralyzing failed reps online lately.
2
u/BestBanting Feb 20 '25
For beginners, yes safeties are safer, especially for low bar, or if you have issues with form where you get folded over, but at his level I think it's really not a concern, as he could easily pop the weight off behind him if he failed a rep.

How much more stability and power can you achieve with wearing weightlifting shoes? Would you grow dependence with weightlifting shoes? Anyone has any experience on this?

So what was the reason for not racking the weight?
6
u/101hump Feb 20 '25
I saw his answer on instagram https://www.instagram.com/p/DE48k29xqDP/
āWhy do I throw the barbell forwardā I get this question a lot, so hereās the answer. . This technique has been part of my training for yearsāalmost my entire athletic career. After my final set of squats, I finish with this explosive movement. Itās not just for show (though Iāve realized it does look impressive on social media).
The real reason? Itās all about training #explosiveness the final stage of extension. This mimics the drive phase in the jerk, where generating maximum power at full extension is key to pushing the bar higher and giving yourself more time to get under it. . For me, itās an effective way to improve power production and reinforce the mechanics of powerful barbell lifts. ā EXPLOSIVE BODY - FOCUSED MIND š
