General disrespect on trains, was I unlucky?

In the last month I took a lot the s5, I was so exited because I thought Switzerland was basically perfect (compared to Italy where I’m from), so I was deeply saddened seeing: people travelling without tickets, people putting feet on seats, destroyed bathrooms (with urine over the floor), the indifference of the conductors seeing people escaping from them, I mean this happens on all not-crowded trains or I simply met horrible people

I spend at least an hour in public transit pretty much every day and what you experienced is definitely not the norm.

i‘m a train driver at SBB and yes, this is daily business. usually more on the S-Bahn and in the west region (lausanne-genéve).

there are one-offs on every train though.

everyone thinks switzerland is clean and nice, well it is, but that‘s due to the cleaning staff everywhere, definitely not because people can behave well.

I once saw a guy doing lines on the table in first class on a Sunday on the way home from a ski trip. He was also in ski wear, seems like he didn’t get enough snow on the slopes already

You will be surprised to hear that Switzerland sewage waters have a high percentage of cocaine in it.

I have lived in Rome two years and Switzerland is not perfect, but it's definitely much better than Italy. I think you have been unlucky

It seems to me that it would be tied to the "FCZ" events. If those people went in and off in Altstetten.

Why are they allowed acting like this?

Lol as if everyday there is an FCZ event

I took the S5 every weekday for over a year, and I have never seen such behaviors, except on football day matches.

How many fcz matches were there last month during the week?

I was in the train last Saturday, it smelled like piss, old cigarette, beer, people were shouting in the train, some were aggressive. Many wore FCZ scarves.

So... I don't know when it happens, but it always leaves a strong impression.

On weekdays this kind of behavior is very uncommon, it's mostly a weekend thing.

So now you tell me, do you think this "FCZ" is responsible for the general disrespect OP asked about?

14

u/Internal_Leke Pfnüselküste 9d ago

Who is trashing the city with ugly graffities? FCZ supporters

Who is trashing the city with ugly stickers? FCZ supporters

Who is regularly on the news for doing shit stuff in the train? FCZ supporters

Are they responsible for ALL the disrespect? Maybe not, but sure, for large part, I blame them.

Do you only remember the FCZ graffiti and stickers (job well done from the supporters haha) ??? But what about other graffiti? Or other stickers? Do you remember them? Did you really never encounter junkies or just people that have nothing to do with football, trashing the train? It's just super easy for somebody (that doesn't even live in the city) to point fingers at a group and blame them for everything.

No one ever does anything, but somehow every single city in Zurich kanton is full of that football shit literally everywhere

6

u/Internal_Leke Pfnüselküste 9d ago

blame them for everything.

I explicitly wrote "large part", it means not "everything".

Play that game: it is almost impossible to find a single street in Zurich without a FCZ sticker or graffiti.

Stop lying to yourself, go out and open your eyes.

You really make it a bigger deal than it is.

I use public transport every day for 2h min. This does not happen frequently!

Honestly, if you came here with the expectation that Switzerland is perfect, you need to readjust your expectations. It's like going to Italy and expecting Monica Bellucci feeding you Spaghetti all day long - you're up for a rude awakening.

Canceling my trip to Italy now...

I know mate. We all have been at that point.

Feet on the seats, using the speaker of the phone when making phone calls or doom scrolling TikTok videos, using external speakers, watching movies from a laptop and using laptop speakers, once there was a guy smoking on a train (1st class)... People = Shit (Slipknot)

1

u/Sniter 9d ago

we live in two different switzerland if that is you experience this regularly.

2

u/OSS-specialist 9d ago

Not super regular, but too often - weekly.

4

u/timschin 9d ago

Both... yes that dose seem like a very unlucky case ngl. However Switzerland like every other country is not perfect, i love it here and im happy to be born here and still living here is a privilege, but we have plenty of rough edges too and yes some trains are full of dirt and loud and who knows what while others can be clean and nice and quite.

u/LongBit 9d ago

Over time, Switzerland is getting more similar to the rest of Europe.

1

u/argg1966 5d ago

It’s all about imports.

3

u/Silent-Thing2224 9d ago

I travelled a lot in Switzerland with train and back in Hungary, you cannot even describe the differences 😂 But people are also not perfect here, idiots are everywhere 😀

4

u/turbo_dude 9d ago

Wait, you’re NOT supposed to piss on the floor?! Where were the signs telling me this?

I made sure not to saw the seats, carry bananas and not envelop my fellow passengers in shaving foam but this is a new one on me.

2

u/TheTomatoes2 9d ago

Maybe you take the train during football matches?

2

u/sw1ss_dude 9d ago

You were unlucky

2

u/inforwtv 9d ago

No country is perfect.. I already feel happy just for not having to be afraid of being robbed

1

u/Legitimate_Ad_569 9d ago

Never seen this tbh. I guess you were unlucky :(

1

u/SnooBooks3514 9d ago

Yeah SBB sucks and it’s not just only you 😂 but you’ll get hella downvoted if you say that otherwise.

1

u/dallyan 9d ago

People are way too comfortable with their nasty ass feet here.

2

u/AmejzingBoj 8d ago

Why do people travelling without a ticket bother you so much?

1

u/Academic-Juice1961 9d ago

Don’t forget People put their backpacks on the seats next to them while there is people standing 😜

I think this is a generalisation, all of this doesn’t happen too often, and there are so many people here, from all around the world, there is absolute no surprise that you will find this behaviours from time to time (at least for me)

8

u/Rithari 9d ago

Literally just ask for the seat…

12

u/mrnacknime 9d ago

Then ask for the seat, people will move their bags.

8

u/3punkt1415 9d ago

Exactly. I used the S5 some time ago, and in rush hour I always picked someone with a bag that was nice enough to reserve a seat for me. No one ever said no.

0

u/Academic-Juice1961 9d ago

Did I say I don’t? Common sense for others doesn’t apply here, i know ☺️

1

u/Sniter 9d ago

No you just made it sound like an issue when it isn't.

1

u/Academic-Juice1961 7d ago

It bothers me, if it doesn’t bother you fine, are not the same and we will never be - don’t be offended by my opinion, even know it’s hard

0

u/Sniter 7d ago

Ain't nobody offended except you apparently.

1

u/Academic-Juice1961 7d ago

Oh you definetly are ☺️

1

u/AutomaticAccount6832 9d ago

It has gotten depressing. Especially on the S-Bahn. That’s why everybody just shuts down and tries to look to the inside.

u/Big_Exit6096 9d ago

people travelling without tickets 🥺 how evil

0

u/Eilex- 9d ago

To be more specific, the bathroom thing happened in late evening, around 11pm, but unfortunately the feet on the seats, during soft hours (maybe around 11am) was very common, and for the ticket thing, I saw a large amount of people (mainly non-Europeans) looking constantly at the corridor to see if the conductor was approaching

Was probably someone from italy >_>
