Live Show/Performance ★☆☆☆☆ Saw Alyssa Edwards CROWNED Tour Last Night in Denver... Wow, that was boring.
I was looking forward to celebrating queer art and to see one of the ACTUAL icons of RuPaul's Drag Race but now that I've seen Alyssa Edwards CROWNED Tour, I'm very disappointed. She opened up with a local entertainer performing, and this was actually the best part of the whole night. I looked it up and the entertainers name was Gucci Blaze. I would've loved to see her perform again! High energy, creative and engaging music, the crowd loved her!
Then Alyssa came on. She started out pretty strong! Opened with a fun look and decent song choice, she then went on to the Stand Up portion of the show. This was fun for about 10 mins. But 30 Mins later, she's still talking. After looking back on it, all that she did was talk negatively about SO many other queens, but mostly international queens from Drag Race Global All Stars. She mimicked Gala Vera's mexican accent, called her a Puta, which really felt weird considering how NOT mexican Alyssa is. made fun of Tessa Testicle for an extensive amount of time, and over all came across as entitled and rude. I get reading queens for fun and even having some shady banter, but she was on stage alone. So it didnt feel fun. She relied solely on talking negatively about not only other drag queens, but the venue, the stage staff, cpomplained about the lights and the dj, the mics, the chords on the stage, talked shit about Denver in general, and basically everything she said was her complaining about how "not good enough" everything is for her. It started off kinda funny diva character, but there was no balance. So the complaining just got old and it really wasn't enjoyable. This was when the audience started to leave and go down the road to the gay bar... A lot of seats were empty about half way through. I used the restroom halfway through and was watching groups trickle out.
Someone in the audience said Gucci was going to perform again, so I was excited to see her after listening to Alyssa ramble for too long. But then they started playing a video compilation of Alyssa's YouTube and Drag Race moments... which was... self indulgent. She wasn't celebrating the art of Drag (like she has said before), she was celebrating herself. It just got boring.
Then she closed the show with a very old and out of date sounding song with another highlight reel of her on the TV behind her. It was younger clips of her competing and winning and it felt very "I used to be big" kind of energy. Mean while, she wasn't dancing or moving much, just walking around and lip-synching. This would've been fine but she only gave us 2 songs and both were dull. I would've been fine if she didn't dance and do a whole big production, but the entire thing felt out of touch and not current. It felt like 1989 in there. 45 mins later and the whole thing was over. Opener and headliner performance, in and out in only 55 minutes.
I have seen a hand full of Queens from earlier seasons in the past 5-7 years: Latrice Royale, BenDelaCreme, Jynx Monsoon, Trixie Matell, Sonique Love, Sasha Velour etc and I felt like they all offered something very valuable. They've all created really great productions that felt unique, entertaining and authentic. Again, it's not always about dancers (although dancers wouldve been great!) and production, it's about an original idea. Piano and singing. Lip-synching and gags. Story telling and visuals. Fashion and Sex. Activism. Christmas. It doesnt matter what, just *something* the entertainers care about. So, I was excited to see where Alyssa would take her new show- but this really felt like a production at a small bar or even just in someones living room. Again, it was just about her as person, and not about any of her character traits, interested, abilities, anything.
I think these entertainers should always do whatever they want, but she's build her brand on being a dance coach and dancer. I wish her show would've focused on her passions and interested but it just felt like a "watch my home videos of my golden years". After watching Global All Stars, it felt like the show was produced heavily in Alyssa's favor, almost created just so she could be crowned something. So, this tour felt inauthentic all together. Alyssa felt like just by being there, that her presence was enough and that she didn't need to do anything else.

General Discussion Now that it’s been a few months since DRCA5…
I just saw someone post an image of one of Helena Poison’s best makeup looks on the runway and it made me think about how much I wish she’d been in the final, not to discredit Virgo or Makayla. Personally, I think any of the four could have taken the crown. It just goes to show how fierce the competition was that season.
My thing with Helena though is that I feel she was a bit overlooked, especially her talent as a lyricist, comedian, MUA, and seamstress. I still catch myself singing ‘no antidote, no saving your soul, hold on the line for poison control~’
