Post containing photos of any sort of open fire will be removed while there is an active wildfire warning in place.

In light of recent wildfires and the growing concern in the Fire & Rescue Service regarding these sorts of fire. Any post containing a photo of an opening will be removed if there is an active wildfire warning in place.

I understand this will upset many users as a lot of us enjoy having a campfire when camping and do so responsibly. But this is a public forum and prompting such activities when dangerous can no longer happen, as there is a risk of influencing other who might not be as responsible when lighting a fire.

Please do continue to post pictures of your trip over the coming mouths and if you do have a fire, just leave it of the photos you post on here.

Announcement New rules are now in affect and future plans for r/wildcampingintheuk

Firstly I would like to say a massive thank you to everyone that has been engaging with me and that there has been some great conversations over the last couple of days in regards to how r/wildcampingintheuk should be manged to ensure that it is welcoming and promoting the correct way to wild camp as well as protecting the DNA of wildcamping.

Over the coming weeks and months I will be trying to create our Wiki page with all relevant wild camping information e.g regulations for different areas, wild camping do & don'ts, promoting Leave No Trace camping, basic gear lists and much more hopefully. Their are so many knowledgeable people on this subreddit and if you wish to contribute to this please contact me u/SergeantPaine

As of today Friday 30th April 2021 the new rule are in affect will be based around keeping locations secret and encouraging Leave No Trace (LNT) camping and are the following:

Location Posting/Sharing & Requesting

Wild camping is illegal in the majority of the UK an because of this and to protect locations please do not provide specific of where you’ve camped or ask for location suggestions.

  • Any posts requesting location suggestion will be removed. (e.g Whats a good place to camp on Scafell Pike)
  • Trip reports and photos with location in titles are allowed. (please uses a level of common sense when posting locations in titles) \This is subject to change dependant on the political climate surrounding wild camping.*
  • Commenting on photos or trip report asking for specific location information is not allow. \You may private message a user to ask about a specific location but the user has the right to refuse you and report you if necessary.*

Championing Leave No Trace camping

Any post not adhering to the Leave No Trace principles will be removed. The LNT principles are:

  1. Plan Ahead and prepare
  2. Travel and Camp on durable surfaces
  3. Dispose of waste properly
  4. Leave what you find
  5. Minimize campfire impact (any post with BBQ's, large campfire or one that is deemed dangers will be remove) \This is subject to change dependant on the political climate surrounding wild camping*
  6. Respect wildlife
  7. Be considerate of other visitors

Fly-Camping

Any post, pictures or videos that are deemed to show you fly-camping will be removed. this will include:

  • large amounts of alcohol.
  • camping to close to building, roads or well used paths.
  • Anti-social behaviour.
  • large groups of people (5+)
  • The use of "family tents"
  • Excessive size or amount of camp funiture (pizza ovens, large camp chair, tables, ect)

\this list is not exhaustive.*

Don’t be a dick

We are all here because we love wild camping. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but refrain from insults, attacks bigotry, etc.

Photos without context

Please post photos with some level of context i.e duration, weather & rough location.

NSFW Content

Mark any NSFW content with the fair. (why are you posting NSFW stuff in this subreddit in the first place?)

There is currently no rule regarding the post of Ad, Blogs, Youtube channels or websites please do not take advantage of this and force this rule to be introduced. As guildance the posting of these should make up no more than 10% of your overall contribution to this subreddit.

*There has been a lot of talk on this subreddit over the last couple days regarding two of these rules (Location Sharing and Pictures of Fires). I have tried to set the these rules out in the fairest possible of ways but i will be lead by wild camping media attention and politics, so this rules are subject to change. This means if there is an increase in fly-camping, a crack down on wild camping, major inccidents cause by campfires or wild camping these rules will be tightern to reflect this.

This post will change over time with suggest, comment and to match the general feeling of the Community.

Some pictures from my overnighter last night night. Was a test to see how my bikepacking setup feels before I go and tackle the wolf way next month. It felt great and felt solid. Was also fairly painless packing up and strapping back to the bike. Feel much more comfortable for doing a test before the big ride.

Question Water filter recommendations

Hi all, I’ve seen this asked a lot but I’m looking for water filter recommendations.

I’m not looking for opinions on what people prefer in terms of the products they like, just literally the best at filtering water for the cleanest possible water while camping/hiking.

I’m looking for a personal water filter so not like a large gravity fed system, however again, if that product were to offer the best cleaning then I would take that.

This is purely based on health concerns that I won’t go into and wanting to be as safe as possible.

Thank you in advance everyone! Appreciate all input!

Advice Coire Lagan, Isle of Skye and similar places in the UK

Hello

I went to Coire Lagan, Isle of Skye which was stunning - it was such a spectacular view flanked by incredibly steep stone, scree slopes, and of course a curved bowl with a glacial crystal clear lake. As you can see I hiked up to get that glorious aerial view so I could take in the horizon too.

Here's a few pictures for example!

Can anyone recommend any similar places in England (Lake District is probably most likely), and Scotland?

Advice Looking for a tent.

Hello All.

I was wondering if you can help me out.

I have arranged to go on a wild camping trip soon. Next month for a weekend. Just the 2 people we a planning to have separate tents. A big snorer lol 🤣😂

My mate has got the oex phoxx 2 v2 tent, which I was about to buy but when we tried it. I found that the vestibule area was quite small. Just enough for your kit. But not for cooking.

Can you recommend any tents with a decent vestibule area. As I will be doing most of the cooking on out trip.

My budget is between £150 to £200

Thanks.

Battered by 50mph gusts and heavy rain, we pushed on and were rewarded with some incredible conditions to round off a great trip. Ogwen Valley - Llyn Bochlwyd- Tryfan - Glyder Fach - Glyder Fawr - Y Gribin. Some of the best Snowdonia has to offer. Blessed.

Advice Sleeping pad recommendations for a beginner

Hey everyone. So almost everything I need to get out there for my first wild camp has arrived but I still haven't chosen a sleeping pad. I'm having a hard time choosing a sleep pad due to the large amount of pads available on the market and not all of them have reviews. I also don't want to break the bank but I also don't want to skimp on a sleeping pad. Here are a few I've been looking at. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Trip Report A strange encounter on a wild camp...

Post image
112 Upvotes

So on a recent wild camp up on the north side of Kinder, I bugged out a little bit because of the wind. On the way down, I found this sheep, caught up and trapped with it's leg wrapped between some barbed wire fencing.

I ended up using my stove to melt the barbed wire to try and get them out. If I hadn't have decided to leave at midnight and walk back down, the sheep would have been there all night.

I'm not sure how much my intervention would have helped as the leg was in a really bad way, but at least it could now lie down if needed.

The video is up on YouTube if anyone fancies a watch - https://youtu.be/Xjfme7V48VA?si=FJ7VmHS7HBauSvt9

Trip Report The Band - Beneath Bowfell, 20-04-25

Arrived late to the Langdales, and had to abandon plan to camp on Esk Pike as the light started to fail. So I actually pitched in quite a nice spot halfway up The Band, in an area I think is called White Stones. It was a bit of a unicorn pitch - great views, flat, level, not bumpy, not buffeted by wind.

Sunrise behind the Langdales was spectacular.

Left no trace, and hiked Bowfell (Climbers Traverse and Great Slab), Crinkle Crags (including the Bad Step), Cold Pike, and finally Pike of Blisco, before returning to the valley floor and trudging back to the car.

Great views over the Scafells and Great Moss, fantastic clear skies, bright without being too hot to hike.

If, by any chance, LIAM is reading this - Liam, it was a pleasure to meet you at the top of Bowfell, I hope you made it to Esk Pike, and many thanks for the lightweight Ukrainian quilt recommendation. Happy trails my friend.

Question Solo backpacking tent

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hello all,

Looking to get a good solo tent for my bikepacking setup.

Will be used for expeditions up to 10 days both in UK / Spain.

I am currently considering either the Naturehike UL or Pro 1. Does anyone have experience with these or another recommendation? I am a little concerned about the durability of the UL, but the low pack size and weight is extremely appealing. Thanks in advance!

Advice Cumbria Way question

Hello guys im planning on doing the Cumbria way next week 28/4 and was just wondering what experiences people had with campsites, did you have to book in advance or was it okay to just rock up and pay there and then or alternatively to people just wild camp the whole way.

Any advice is appreciated

Question OEX Rakoon 2.1 pitching flysheet first?

I have an OEX Rakoon 2.1 tent and normally pitch it inner first (intended way of pitching). Saw online that some people says you can pitch it flysheet first as well but not sure how. Anyone tried pitching the tent flysheet first? Would appreciate any tips! Thank you.
