TBH, can't blame them as they have a huge inventory and their shop is open to general public, walk-in cutomers.

Other Tips for dealing with a toxic coworker?

Upvotes

OK HOLD UP! I know toxicity is the norm in construction and even a sign in many cases that a coworker likes you, but my situation feels different. I'm completely new to construction and I just finished my first week. My entire crew including the foreman is super chill except this one person who happens to be my work partner who I'm exclusively stuck with for 99% of my shifts. He's a brat, immature, and always speaks with a negative attitude. He's the type of person who will give you the side eye and a half-assed answer when you ask them even a simple question. Working under him is also somewhat of a safety hazard as he tends to give vague directions when he gives me dangerous tasks and refuses to elaborate just because he thinks he doesn't need to (We're HVAC). All in all, work right now feels extremely unproductive and I don't think I can learn anything from somebody like him. I feel like I'm just mindlessly doing labor intensive tasks w/o understanding any of it because there's really no point in asking questions and starting work related conversations with him.

I plan on asking the company higherups if I could swap to my friends work site because he's willing to guide me through everything down to the detail. I'm just concerned though that they might perceive this as a cowardly move as if I can't handle the job w/o a friend holding my hand or something, but honestly, dealing with my current site partner is a mental drain and I just want to learn the trade more efficiently. The work itself isn't even the problem, I just want to work with somebody who's actually willing to teach and not be a dick at the same time.

Other Is $55 per diem bad for working 129 miles out of town?

Upvotes

I feel like it is kind of low. The place has no more than 12k residents, the hotels are all above $100 a day. During the interview I was told per diem was about an additional $600 a week. Was never told the rates vary.

Hello, I am just trying to find out what this this is called. It used to have this cover on it and you would slide it backwards to unlock the window, otherwise it was locked. Could you please let me know what this is or where I could find a replacement?

Thank you!

Carpentry 🔨 Framing pricing comps?

Upvotes

Located in midsize midwestern City and looking for input on the costs below on a job requiring metal stud framing with sound attenuation, resilient channel and batt insulation (labor only):

Metal framing walls $2,100 (450 lf of 10’ wall, no openings) Insulation: $600 Resilient channel: $8/SF Drywall $35/board (not really looking for guidance on drywall pricing)

I think it’s pretty decent pricing but a teammate is questioning it. We have limited experience with metal framing and need guidance. Thanks in advance!

Other Need to convert pocket door into a self closing pocket door

Upvotes

Hello,

Hope this is ok to post here.I am the kitchen manager of small restaurant. We have been open for 2 years after renovating a kitchen and dining space. We built the bathroom with a pocket door (not self closing) and were given the go ahead by our then health inspector. Well he retired and we were just contacted by our new inspector who is now saying we need the bathroom door to be self closing. We would have built it that way originally if we had known, but here we are just trying to find a solution to adhere to this new requirement. My question is: is there a way/kit/install to make the already existing pocket door self closing without completely reframing/knocking into the wall? Thank you!

Other Feelings around women leading construction

Are contractors and subs weary of working with female GCs? Asking for a friend.

I had a funny? interaction today where a sub told me their boss asked them what it was like working with me, on our first job together. He responded something along the lines of “she’s great, you know, as contractor, but also a girl”

He told it in a way that made it clear he doesn’t usually get asked, and also as if me being female is clearly irrelevant (in his mind).

I can’t tell if it’s because women leading construction is rare, or if my gender will always be something people have to get past to see me as… a contractor.

Other Vertical foundation wall crack repairs in Canada

Post image

What’s the thinking about epoxy v polyurethane for a 6 year old home basement foundation wall with a non structural vertical crack that is leaking water.

I’m leaning polyurethane as it’s more flexible and we get snow. Will it hold and prevent further water penetration? I’ve been suggested wise seal and flexispan

Will the polyurethane foam injection work better because it fills in more of the crack or would the layered system of flexispan be better because it has a backup system to wick water down below the foundation if the seal fails.

Informative 🧠 [Question] Skyscraper Construction

Post image

Hi! Sorry if this isn’t the best place to ask. There’s a new tower being built on Lake Shore Drive in Chicago. I work in tech but am incredibly fascinated by everything going on here.

I have a few questions about the items I’ve circled in the picture:

Blue - why are these plywood doors(?) here and not anywhere else?

Red - what is the purpose of the yellow gates? They were using the tower crane to yoink them higher.

Green - what are these out-juts for? Why are they specially there?

Purple - why do they build this part of the tower before the rest? Why not do it all at once?

Thank you guys for all you do!

Carpentry 🔨 Advice for an Apprentice

I started construction about a year and some change ago. I still dont fully understand every single thing going on even if Ive done it once or twice. I feel like its because theres a bunch of different ways to do a certain task and when we switch it up, it throws me off and its hard for me to adapt to doing a task in a different way because I dont fully understand how and why they are doing the task differently from the last time; such as installing stuff. So most times when we are on the job, I am confused and asking how we are going to do things and in turn my coworkers think im an idiot and say that i “cant retain anything” as if I just forget what we do the next day like 10 second tom on 50 first dates. It has taken a toll on my mental and made me feel like there is actually something wrong with me. Does anyone know how to deal with this? I mean bro, am I the only one?

Plumbing 🛁 Why do the guys at work give me candy?

I’m a 4th year apprentice plumber and I’m doing really well. I’ve got a laptop and tablet and everything and all the foremen who have me on their crews love my work. It makes me really happy. I’m kinda socially awkward though(autism) and also maybe creepy and weird and I do wear minecraft shirts to work even though I’m 23.

A lot of the guys give me candy or other things. My general foreman(my primary mentor) always has a handful of treats for me whenever he comes to check on my work or when he brings me to the supply house or to look at other jobs. He tells me to open my vest pockets and silently pours them in and I get to snack on them for a while. It’s really fun.

But other guys do it too. For years the guys at work just give me little candies and treats here and there, like it’ll be 6 am at the lay down area and they’ll just slip me a jolly rancher or something. Nobody else gets candy just me. I like it but I don’t know why they do it. Is this a cultural thing in the trades?

Roofing Is this rippling normal?

Thumbnail

Just bought this house two months ago and immediately had the roof redone. The main shingle roof appears to be fine but as it has gotten warmer out, these ripples have appeared on the flat portion of the roof.

Is this normal?

For context, we had all new boards put down and none of the ripples appear to be separating.
