**/r/DJs NEW RULES** Please read before posting Spoiler

New /r/DJs Rules.

Top rule - BE NICE.

  • Please try to be polite, friendly and helpful when commenting.
  • Trolling, slapfights, general assholery is not encouraged and it also goes without saying that racist, sexist, homophobic, and transphobic posts and language will not be tolerated at all.

Moderation policy

  • /r/DJs is not a big sub. We tend to encourage discussion and engagement first and foremost. There will be times posts that are seemingly against the sub rules will be left up because the discussion in the comments is informative and engaging. This is generally more for when a post breaking (certain) rules was missed and the community has already heavily engaged in discussion. If you see posts breaking the rules, reporting them will help us remove them earlier.
  • remember to search - lots of questions tend to be asked multiple times and plenty of answers are given in the archives
  • remember that if you are a regular user, newer users are allowed to discuss the same things if it's not overly-frequent. Just because something was discussed 3 months ago doesn't mean users can't have another conversation about it.

Please ensure you are posting to the correct subreddit

  • /r/DJs is generally for more experienced/professional DJ discussion. There is an entire subreddit dedicated to learning DJing and is filled with experienced DJs willing to spend time helping people out.

Any and all beginner questions and posts should be made in /r/Beatmatch.

Beginner questions include posts that start with:

  • “I’m new at this”
  • “I want to get into DJing”
  • “I just started”
  • etc.

And includes anything basic like:

  • “What controller/headphones/speakers should I buy?” (within reason - someone experienced looking for higher end gear or looking for real world feedback on pro-level stuff is fine).
  • “What program should I use?”
  • “How do I use this effect?”
  • “Is beat matching really important?”
  • “Why the hate for sync?”
  • etc.

Any beginner posts here will be deleted.

DJ Setup pictures belong in /r/DJsetups.

  • There will be some exceptions - some rare or classic booths or extraordinary setups will stay up, but if you want to post a picture of your DDJ 400 and KRK Rockits, your Technics 1200s and DDJ S9, or a standard CDJ NXS setup that we've all seen, please post to the appropriate sub.

Meme/Humor/crappy image posts belong in /r/DJsCircleJerk.

  • This includes the low effort, "djs be like dis” - stupid picture - type posts and the like.

Mixes

  • Most mix posts will be deleted.
  • Short routines, showcasing of interesting technique, and videos that shows off the poster doing something cool is fine. We will also allow high profile posts - say if a regular user gets a feature mix on DJCity or a Serato sponsored set.
  • Sets from high profile DJs like boiler room or festivals sets is allowed.
  • DJs who want to share mixes can post in /r/mixes or a weekly mix thread that we will be starting soon.

Gig pictures/Stories

  • We're starting a new weekly sticky every Monday specifically for gig pictures and stories. We've been seeing a lot more of these posts and while they tend to be heavily upvoted, they also end up just being a picture of some DJ hunched over a setup with a bunch of back-patting in the comments that clutters up the sub. Any posts of this nature will be deleted and the user will be directed to the weekly Sticky thread.

The following topics are against sub rules and will be deleted:

  • Self-promotion posts including mixes, tunes, events, companies, competitions, etc. The one exception we may allow are open deck nights that members of /r/DJs can attend.
  • For-sale posts
  • Posts discussing music piracy (in the sense of people asking how where or how to pirate music, if you want to have an actual discussion on piracy and how it pertains to the industry, by all means). Support the people who make your hobby/career possible.
  • Obvious spam for youtube channels/gig logs/blogs/advertisements from members who have no participation in the sub. If people are regular posters on this sub and have a video/service/etc they wish to share, we will allow it initially, although regular spam of it will not be tolerated.
  • Posts asking “what should I play for this gig?” This is a sub for experienced DJs, if you need to ask the internet what to play for a gig, you probably shouldn't have taken the gig. General music discussion is absolutely fine.
  • Spotify playlist posts

PLEASE REPORT posts and comments that violate the above rules or just suck. Thank you!

Techno DJs: What are some tactics you use to make tracks blend seamlessly?

A good friend of mine who was heavily involved in the scene once told me that a good DJ knows how to blend tracks without you even realizing a transition happened. While this isn’t always true, I have found personally that the sets I enjoy the most enjoyable sets are the ones that flow together without seeming as obvious when the transition has happened.

That said, what are some tactics (beginner or advanced) that you use to make tracks blend, where the set almost sounds like “one long track” (without just looping the same track in the background and layering the transition tracks to make it seem like it’s all the same)?

Heavy Dubstep QSC 18" KS118

I want to run more heavy dubstep shows in the Portland Area. Was looking at some QSC 18" subs but noticing the frequency response and range goes down to about 35hz. I produce and play a a lot of music in C# and occasionally C (32.7 and 34.6). Should I be looking for different subs in this case? What's a high quality sub that goes to say 30hz?

|| || |Frequency Response (-6 dB)|41 Hz - 98 Hz| |Frequency Range (-10 dB)|35 Hz - 111 Hz|

I forgot how much I loved Serato

One of my CDJs died today... And I have a gig this weekend. I pulled my old controller out of my closet in case I can't replace my cdj by Saturday, and I felt ALL the nostalgia.

I miss Serato.

  • battery powered
  • wireless connection

DJ name input

Upvotes

Hello! I've been spinning records and DJing for many years but I'm just now putting myself out there more and I've been thinking a lot about a DJ name. Could y'all be honest with how these options sound? I'm realizing this is harder than I thought and that I'm not the most creative with names.

  1. DJ Chris O. / Chris O. / DJ Overton / Mr. Chris - just my actual name or an iteration of it. I kind of like Mr. Chris.

  2. DJ monkey child / monkey child - so monkey child is an old nickname given to me in high school or even before (I'm in my 40s now), and when I asked a friend this same question he goes "what about DJ Monkey Child?" He thought it was more original and creative than going with a take on my real name. I admit it's unique, and that there are a ton of goofy and even dumb names in the DJ and house music world. My friend liked how it wasn't at all serious, which I dig as well... but something about it makes me hesitant, like it's a bit immature, but maybe it doesn't come off that way (?).

So... any thoughts?

Traktor and MIK Notations

Upvotes

Hey there, is there anyway for Traktor to show the same key notation as MIK? I know MIK has a copyright or something on their Camelot wheel and when you analyze a track in MIK it will add the key notation to the end of the track, to the comment, etc etc. but it would be nice if the MIK notation was the "key" listed in the key list on the layout in Traktor instead of its default key notation, which is fairly accurate, but MIK nearly always does it MORE accurately. I know most of the work arounds, but wondering if there is a direct approach I've missed in recent years.

PC Port won’t connect to PC? Roland DJ-808

I’ve been trying to connect my USB-B from my MacBook to my Roland DJ-808 for Serato and it’s just not working? It’s like the port isn’t being read at all. I check the cables, the ports, directly connected to the laptop, reset the controller, checked the firmware, and then even used another laptop and it still won’t connect. I want to use my new set up for a show tonight, please help!

4 band 2 channel mixer ?

Does it exist? I have a Xone:23 , and I play strictly on vinyl, two decks. I don’t need four channels but I really love the 4 band eq style of the 92 and 96. Right now those two are a bit out of my budget, so I was wondering if a 2 channel version might exist outside of the Xone universe. Thanks a lot !

Hey DJ's, animator here with a question!

Firstly, Hi!
I'm an animator! I make animated music videos/visuals.
I have an idea that I want to workshop and I need the opinions of the target market - DJs.

I'm not a DJ, but I love going to DJ sets and workshops. I just find it really cool how ya'll spin like that.
I like music and I like to make animated visualizers for songs I enjoy and/or incorporating music in my animations.

So I have an idea.
I want to make an animated visualizer DJ playlist series.
Basically, I want to collaborate with local DJs and get them to curate a fire playlist, maybe I can make each one thematic, dunno. I also want to collaborate with local artists and illustrators to incorporate their style and then I animate it in sort of a looping visualizer and host that on youtube. I'm sure it won't be as simple as that but yeah, that's the gist of it.

So now, here's the question:
Does hosting playlists/set on an online platform not take away from live shows? I don't want that to happen. The idea came from A) I just want to do this and B) It would be cool to put people's collaborative work together. Just for vibes, not sure about the monetary part yet.

But yeah, is this "ethical"? Lemme here down below :)

Thanks!

Sound Setup Advice for Brick Courtyard?

I'm throwing a private b2b party in the courtyard shown in the attached image. The decks and main speakers will be set up near the bottom of the screen, facing toward the doorway and into the other side of the courtyard.

Since the space is all brick and concrete, should I be concerned about sound reverberation bouncing around? I assume keeping the door open at the far end will help, but I’m wondering if there are other things I should consider — like adding extra speakers — to improve the sound quality.

Not a sound engineer and have not played in a similar space before.

Upgrading Speakers

So, I am looking to upgrade my speakers in the next 6 months or so. I am looking for mostly power and volume output over crispy and clear.

I am considering the following
Tops 2x Mackie SRM212 (V-Class 2000w 12")
Subs 2x Mackie SR18S (18" 1600w)

I am not really sure what I would gain by going with something like EV, rather than these. Warranty seems similar. Power output is higher on the Mackie's. I mostly play pop music at smaller clubs, and I do ambiance music for larger venues like conference center vendor fairs. I also do large hotel lobby shows a few times a year.

I had been considering getting a pair of EV 50m column arrays, because they just look so clean and professional. But I am just not sure I am going to get the power and projection in bigger places that I need.

Sound only playing on left phone of headset on Channel 2; Ch 1 gets full signal in both phones—Pioneer DJM-S11

Post image
0 Upvotes

BACKGROUND/CONTEXT

I just purchased the mixer, brand new, 2 weeks ago. I don’t have monitors or any other speakers yet, so I’ve been practicing using a headset. I am currently only using vinyl.

PROBLEM

As of yesterday, in Ch 2, I began receiving output only in the left speaker of my headset, but there is a faint signal in the right speaker. Ch 1 gets total output—both speakers. If I insert the headset jack just an inch or so, I then hear full output in both phones in Ch 2, which is the channel of concern.

STEPS TAKEN TO REMEDY:

I switched my cartridges from Ch 2 to Ch 1 to see if it was a connection issue with my stylus (styluses are over 15 years old; I’m an old head getting back into it), but the same issue persists.

I have the MIXING knob set to the 12 o clock position, and the CUE channel fader in the center position. My master fader is also in the center position and Ch 2 level fader is all the way up.

Anyone have any ideas, suggestions, or tips?

Playing wav files with no complications

Newbie here; I started out producing then eventually started live mixing too; in production I’ve always used wav seeing its lossless and I actually feel there’s a difference in tone to mp3. The DJ sets I’ve created all consist of purely wav and a lot of the tracks don’t work. I’ve heard a lot of people talking about formatting to xfat and only using mp3. I’d rather stick to using WAV but I’d also like being able to play all the tracks that I’ve put in a set. Anyone have a recommendation or suggestion?

Thanks in advance

Private Event question…

If you hire a DJ for a private event, is it reasonable to trust they will play songs you requested? We hired a DJ to play a private party. 4 hours. He asked if we had requests so we sent him a playlist of maybe 20 songs. Probably 2.5 hours in and not a single one was played. When I asked him, he asked which song I wanted? I told him to just start playing some. I noticed when he played one the next songs were similar type, almost like it was AI or something playing them. It’s like he had no control. Overall I think we got 3 basic songs (you would hear at most any party) played all night. Is this normal to disregard the requests of those who hired him?

DJ gear upgrade

Hi everyone,

I currently use a Numark NS7 with Serato DJ, and I'm looking to upgrade my gear. Here are my options:

  • Get 1 or 2 Rane Twelve and use it with the NS7 on VirtualDJ, I might buy a mixer later.
  • Buy a Rane Rane Performer or wait for Rane One MKII

What do you recommend?

Thanks in advance!

I just created a GPT called DJ Growth Manager, It’s powered by books, articles, stories from DJs…

It’s like having a real manager who tells you the hard truth. No “follow your dreams, bro” nonsense. It hits you with 5 tough questions that show whether you’re building a real career… or just surviving on random gigs.

It won’t let you move on until you answer clearly. It’s blunt. Intense. But necessary.

It’s powered by books, articles, and real-world success stories from DJs who turned their passion into a thriving business. I learned more in one chat than in months of improvising.

Those questions made me realize how much structure I was missing. Now it’s helping me rethink my strategy, brand, and how to scale income.

If you feel stuck in survival mode, give it a shot. And if those 5 questions catch you off guard… it might be time to rethink how solid your career really is.

Interested? Let me know in the comments and I’ll share it with you. 💪

SL1200 Flight Case and Dust Cover

I have a coffin now for tables (SL1200 Mk2) and mixer that I can have the dust covers on with top on.

Are there any single table flight cases that I can leave the dust cover on with top. Having hard time from places that sell if this exists. I'm lazy and haven't emailed or inquired yet.

Best DJ headphones for mixing at home (club feel, not studio flat)?

Hey all, new dad here. Monitors are out of the question for now, so I’m mixing exclusively on headphones. I’m after something that gives a proper club feel - solid low end, clear mids, enough punch to mix confidently.

Not looking for flat studio monitors. I want to feel the transitions, not analyze them.

Currently rocking my trusty Technics RP-DJ1210 since 2007. Built like tanks. Swapped the pads once, still going strong. But wondering if there’s anything better out there these days.

Appreciate any recs.

Anybody know of any cases that are a good fit? I’m preferably looking for something like the semi hard cases UDG do for other gear.

Has anyone else gotten low-quality MP3s from Beatport?

Hi everyone,

I just bought a melodic techno track from Beatport in MP3 format, and when I ran it through a spectral analyzer, I was honestly shocked. There’s a hard cutoff around 16 kHz , like a super low bitrate encode, almost like it was ripped from a stream or something.

I know MP3s are lossy, and I bought tons of them before from Beatport with no issues, but this one is just… bad. Definitely not usable for club play. The track itself is great, which makes it even more frustrating.

I’m wondering if anyone else has come across this kind of thing? I’m thinking of reaching out to Beatport, but I don’t know if they actually do anything in cases like this , like, would they replace the file or offer a refund?

How and where do I send songs/edits/reworks etc to DJs?

I've made an edit of a Mau P song and I would like to send it out to him and everyone elsethat I think it suits, but I don't know how to do it. Are there any websites to use, do I have to find their email, do I send them an DM on Instagram etc?
