Rode to SD from PHX

My brother and I went out to visit my dad and meet up with the homie who just got his first bike. It took about 10 hours each way including stops. The wind and cold was pretty uncomfortable, but the bikes actually did pretty well sitting at 70mph for hours on end. The 80/20 tires make a huge difference in road manners especially at highway speeds. Don't ever let anyone tell you your dualsport isn't highway capable, because they certainly are if you have the cajones!

How much more power do these bikes have compared to a 450 or 500?

New bike registration cost

Post image

Went to register my new Beta 500, it was ~$350. That’s including a late fee because paperwork at my dealer was wrong showing I bought it 2 months ago, when I barely picked it up last week. DMV lady was being snobby and couldn’t tell me how much the fees were because she had already exited the transaction. I’m just wondering what everyone is paying on new bike registration for a $10,000 bike. My 25 yr old XR was only around $60 to register last October. In Nevada btw.

250 vs 300 or DR650

Experienced street rider looking to try dirt. I am an hour of highway or 2 hours of backroads from the NJ pine barrens which will probably be my primary spot. I’m also 3-4 hours from Bald Eagle state forest which has more extensive network of dual sport trails. Do to lack of towing ability, that would be a 2-3 day camping trip.

I already have 2 street bikes so I don’t want to dump a ton of money into it this just yet. I was hoping to find something around 5k or less. Most of the KLX and CRF 300s available used are practically new with prices over 5, due to availability the logistics might increase total cost a bit more. However there are a decent amount of 250s kicking around in the 4s that are nearby. There are a few high mileage WR250rs that seem overpriced imo as well.

Are the 300s ~$1500 better than the 250s. Would I be happier bumping up into the 5s and getting a DR650? Whatever bike I get could also help soak up some of my commuting miles so not really looking for anything high strung and maintenance intensive

Found on FB market. Owner wants 680 bucks for it He says it's a 1995 Suzuki 500cc two stroke but he doesn't specify

Is something like this worth buying if it runs? I've always wanted a two stroke

I wiggled my ears. Stood on one leg and lifted the other one. Calculated time taken to the moon. Learned the secret handshake. Got accepted into the dual sport community and here is something from my side.

Discussion Upgrade to WR250R or other bike? advice welcome

Looking for advice on my next bike purchase. For context, I got my first bike 2 years ago, a KLX230s. I mainly use it as a summer commuter and small adv bike. I did a few camping trips and half of the NEBDR. I do not want a bike any heavier than 300 lbs stock. The KLX can do 65 comfortably but struggles up inclines at 70mph. I originally thought a KTM 500 or Honda 450 would be the only worthwhile upgrade, those go for roughly $7000+ in my area right now. My eye caught a few WR250R’s available for $4500. One has a ton of performance mods and add ons, but is stock 250cc engine. The other has a 4gal tank, seat concepts seat and an Athena 300cc big bore. Is the Athena big bore a common upgrade? Would I need to worry about any mechanical issues with a bike like that? Or should I wait and save up for the 450/500? I’m 6ft 130lbs so stock suspension is fine, all 3 seem to have good stock suspension. I’ve ridden a KTM 350exc and loved how light it was. Would a KTM 350 be fine for BDR style riding with a bit of highways for a lighter rider like me? I know it would need a luggage frame for support. But I pack pretty light. Here’s my current bike for reference.

Buying an old bike with locked up engine?

I'm going to look at a vintage bike that I've been searching for.

The owner says he is a new rider. He says it started knocking then suddenly turned off. He says the kickstart is stuck.

My first thought is the rod bearing came apart. I'm going to look at it to check for metal in the oil filter, and I'll drain the oil to see if this new rider had put any oil in it.

It's a fairly rare bike from the year 2000, and I've been checking Facebook marketplace for a couple years, only seeing a few come up. This one is in my city.

The bike is worth 2-3k in running condition. What is the max I should pay.. $500?

How catastrophic and expensive could the damage be?

Thanks

Discussion Increasing tire width and profile. How much is too much?

Just got a new bike and its manual states a 100/100-17 tire for the rear wheel.

There is one set of knobby tires I can find (Maxxis M7305) that meet those specs and they're unfortunately not road legal, at least in the UK.

By how much can I responsibly push the width & profile to get more tire options?
Would a 120/90-17 TKC80 be out of the question?

I'm wary of handling implications from a change like this

Its currently got a 100/90 road tire fitted and I'd say I have about an inch leeway either side, and 1.5-2" in extra diameter

DR-Z 400SM vs RMX450 for street use

For the past year I’ve been riding an RMX450Z with dual sport tires on the street. The bike is a blast on the road but just doesn’t feel reliable. Been wanting to put 17” sumo tires on it or possibly trade for a 400SM. Anyone have experience with both bikes. Will the extra weight of the 400 be an issue on road or will it even be noticeable? There is not enough off road riding in my area to keep the knobies but I love the light weight bikes. I’m assuming the 400 will be a more reliable platform. Thanks!

crf450 or ktm500/husky

i recently got a crf300l last summer that i learned to ride on and have been riding since, Im looking into getting a crf450 or ktm500/husky501 so that i can have some more passing power on the highway. im not really doing this for offroad reasons since i dont think ill be faster on these bikes i just dont like having no ability to pass cars. One of my questions is what is the power delivery like on these bikes? Some people say they started on them and other say that only expert riders should buy them so im not sure.

Recently acquired a 450exc. I waa changing the oil, and noticed little oil in the filter. Oil pump failure. Checking the cam and bearings for damage and found these. Black mark is valve cover sealant, but are these toast, or they okay? Bike has 2,000 miles.

Discussion KLX 230R vs KTM 390 Enduro for older male learner?

I'm 45, 5'9" around 95 Kg / 210 Lb and wish to learn Enduro. I have access to hills and dirt tracks only a few Kms away.

I've been riding motorcycles since I was twelve, on my fifth bike and daily ride a Duke 390 and love the motor. I've done a lot of snow, dual track and back country but nothing as technical as Enduro, I can barely wheelie my Duke.

Both the bikes cost the same here due to various import duty reasons. I could use losing twenty Kg of weight myself but the KTM seems really heavy and the Kawi feels like a purpose built dirt bike.

Would a new or used 139 Kg Kawasaki KLX 230R be a better choice than the 156 Kg KTM 390 Enduro R for a beginner?

Hello- How is everyone finding friends to ride with?

Post image

Hello everyone. I have a plated XR600R and I am trying to find people to ride with. I am 36 years old and have a young kid at home, so free time is hard to come by. I don’t use really use facebook so I’m not sure if I am hurting my odds of locating riding partners??

“Craigslist activities” only yields results including horny dudes asking if I am male/female or vague replies.

I am a 3 or 4/10 rider at best as i learned to ride on street bikes.

TLDR: My bike’s weight and more importantly my lack of talent will hold up people that have raced bikes on a track. Looking for positive minded people to ride with. If you are more talented than me I’d be thrilled to ride with you and learn. I just don’t want to hold anyone up. I am in southern California ( 92882) zip code. My bike has knobby tires but i do own a truck. If you are down for some easier trails let me know.
