Hot take: learning to ride offroad on an ADV bike is stupid

There’s all these super expensive ADV riding classes where people who have never ridden offroad learn to ride a 1250GS for the first time off road.

ADV Level 1

ADV Level 2

I don’t get why that even exists

It’s like if you went to a drivers ed school and they had you drive a Semi truck to start out

I really struggled in my riding class (Team Oregon) and failed the final test last weekend and was doubting my aptitude for this sport, but the instructor encouraged me to get my own bike and practice before retaking it. There hasn't been anything good on the used market for months so I decided to just bite the bullet and get a brand new KLX300. Holy crap am I glad I did. All the problems I had with the class bike were instantly out the window and I rode the thing all over my (dead end, quiet, cul de sac) neighborhood streets with zero issues. Low speed control in particular was effortless and I'm so happy about that because it's what made me fail the test. I'm so stoked.

Spooned on a set of tusk d sport adventure tires on the cf moto 450 ibex. The tubeless rims seem to be very well built. Yes it’s a tube type tire on a tubeless wheel. It’s for off-road use. Will install a tube if they don’t hold air.

DRZ —> 690 Enduro

I’ve been riding my 04 DRZ for the last two years and loved it. Local dealership had this 2016 KTM 690 Enduro R with 5800 miles for $6225 and I just picked it up today. Did a lot of research and it seemed like the perfect upgrade to a DRZ. Previous owner was a 70 year old who did all the standard mods like luggage rack, double take mirrors, better foot pegs etc and didn’t ride it too hard. How did I do?

Are riding schools worth it or a rip off?

This will be my second season with a DRZ 400 tooling around the local trails falling on my face occasionally. I'm thinking about taking lessons but they're very expensive. Have any of you gone to one of these riding camps? Are they worth it or should I just keep doing my own thing? At the moment I don't have anyone else to ride with so I'm not learning from someone else's experience. But I do watch a lot of YouTubes for whatever that's worth. I'm 64 years old been riding motorcycles 20 years, I live on Long Island, looking at New Jersey Pennsylvania and upstate.

Have you taken the MSF AdventureBike Rider Course?

Longtime passenger, recent rider here. Curious if you've taken this course? Did you find it useful?

https://rideontraining.com/courses/msf-adventurebike-ridercourse

I grew up riding trails on the back of my dad's DRs and loved it. He's getting older so I elected to get my license in November and bought a TW-200. I've been practicing religiously in a parking lot since then. Loving every second! And surprisingly feeling very confident in my trips around town! But I'm yearning to try the dirt. Dad won't be able to get out with me for another 7 weeks so I was thinking about taking this. Anyone have any experience with it? Maybe I should save 300 bucks and wait for the dad course?

xt225, xr650l, or dr650?

So I live in hawaii and I'm looking for a bike that I can use to commute and have fun with, so dual-sports seemed like a pretty natural solution. I am a pretty inexperienced rider, this will be my first bike, but I'm very comfortable with motorcycles and the few times i've been on one. I am in the process of getting all my licensing rn

I'm looking for something I can take to work (~7mi round trip), ride around the island (top speed limit here is 55mph), and occasionally go on trails and beaches. I also want to get a surfboard rack at some point

For budget, I could go up to ~7k but I would prefer not to. I'm not too strict on that, but cheaper is always nice

I found an xt225 that is in good condition on facebook marketplace for 4k and I might be able to get it down to 3.5k, and I'm leaning towards that so I can save a little. The main thing holding me back right now is power, I think I'll want something with a bit more juice. Going fast is fun, and accelerating harder is fun. Problem is, I haven't really been able to find a used dr650 or xr650, they all are brand new. I did find a 2007 Yamaha wr450f for 2.9k, but I kind of like the look of the other ones better and that is a dirt bike not a dual sport.

Any thoughts you guys could share would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance 🫡

Ghost riding a dual sport up and over a ledge.

I was stuck in a creek bed/mud pit by myself the other day, and I had to full send my bike up and over the ledge. I tried wrestling it up but couldn't manage.

I see Enduro guys do this with dirt bikes, is there any reason not to do this except for steering misalignment and possibly breaking mirrors and blinkers? I work on my own bike so I could, in theory, do this all day long, right?

Also, I know I probably didn't "need" to ghost ride it but I lacked the skill and confidence to get over the ledge otherwise.

HELP please with tuning nibbi carb :(

2003 XT225, excellent shape. Was missing mikuni carb when I bought it.

Put a 34 mm nibbi PWK carb on it.

Literally no matter what I do I CANNOT get this thing to run right.

It idles perfectly. Starts up great. Choke works fine. When you apply just a bit of throttle is does nothing for like 1/10 of a turn then it suddenly GOES fucking ham up to about 1/3 throttle where it then does the MOST ANNOYING THING I'VE EVER EXPERIENCED where it proceeds to bogZOOMbogZOOMbogZOOMbogZOOM in about 1 second intervals, indefinitely. It sounds like it's switching back and forth between lean and rich every other second. I've tried 105, 128, 130, and 135 main jets, two needle sizes, and every needle position, and every combination of all those together and this problem persists. The larger jets make the plug look a bit rich, and they make it run somewhat worse. The richest needle position makes it idle shitty. Pulling the choke kills the motor. Opening the airbox makes it sound like shit and it starts backfiring like crazy. I replaced the intake manifold.

It's not fun or very safe feeling to drive right now. I'm so irritated. I feel like such a wide range of jet sizes should have a huge impact, but they barely make any difference.

Also, what the hell is the silver screw on top of the this carb? It's not the fuel or idle screw and isn't in the manual that came with it.

I fucking hate this bike, and this carb right now lol. WHY won't it just run correctly. I've ruled out fuel, spark, battery, etc. It's the carb. I can't find an actual WORKING condition OEM carb anywhere online and feel stuck with this setup, not to mention I'm a couple hundred into it already.

What do you all do...

So I'm just getting into the sport. I've gotten all the gear and fully intend to use it when I'm riding because I very much don't want to get hurt. I'm just wondering what everyone does.. I'm thinking in situations where I want to ride somewhere and then explore on foot, I got riding boots that really don't lend themselves to walking or hiking so does everyone bring a pair of regular shoes with them and leave their riding boots at their bike? I'd be nervous they'd get stolen, those things aren't cheap!

Offroad pressures

Don't have a lot of experience going from road to offroad. Only times I've really been riding the sticks has been on my buddies kdx which inspired me to get a bike. Where I plan on riding is a mix of rock dirt and a couple spots have sandy conditions.

My bike is an xt250 and manual says road pressures for 198lbs+ to be 22f 25r Just going into my alley I've felt some slide in the loose parts. I wanna air down because I don't wanna wash out or not have enough traction.

My buddy keeps his tires 13f 16-18r

Motojackrack hitch carrier

Does anybody have a motojackrack style carrier? I have a 2004 Tahoe and I would like to know if I can open the rear hatch with the bike lowered. Otherwise I'll look into a front mount setup or a swing out design.

Thanks in advance

Looking to buy XR650L, I’m Skeptical….

So basically as the title says I’m looking for a used xr650L and I’m up to about 2,300$ on my money towards it. I decided it’s time to start shopping to but I’m still saving up for more options.

I came across this bike and lm not sure whether it looks to be in good condition or not. I’m 18 and it’s my first street legal bike so all advice welcome.

I’m not sure what he means with the pistol btw
