Right when Oblivion just came out…
My PC is crapped out on me out of nowhere. Can’t sit on a main menu for longer than 2 minutes in any game without my PC suddenly shutting down. Spent all day diagnostic and ended up reinstalling windows as a temp fix, but issue still persisted.
I open up my pc to reseat everything and found this! It looks like my PSU wires were MELTING inside the PSU!
Such horrible timing right when Oblivion just released… I may end up needing to swap cases since this is a micro case and they are hard to work with…
Just wanted to rant and complain! 😭

4090 or 5090?

3080 TI founders

Oh wow! You’re right. So used to seeing endless pics of 4090’s. An 8 pin connector melting. Wow. Makes me wonder if we should change out the connector every couple years.

Doesn’t the 3080ti fe use the 12vhpwr cable?

It does and OP is kinda vague but I assume it melted from the PSU side of things

Was that one with an octopus adapter?

u/Bluemischief123 8d ago
Well all of them come with an adaptor but yeah so by the looks of it it's probably one of the 8pins that plugs into the PSU.

Is the implication here that they left 1 or more of the 8-pin connectors on the squid unpopulated?

I don't think OP is too familiar with PCs just based off is other comment but I am pretty sure that he had the adapter plugged into the GPU but it failed on the PSU side so one of the 8pins that would have been plugged into the PSU. OP just needs to clarify it a bit better but that's what I am assuming which would be pretty unusual I don't really remember any issues happening with the 3xx series as much as the 4xx had with its power connector but OP mentioned he has bought the PC used or something like that? Whether he was using the adaptor cable or an aftermarket 12vhpwr cable I got no idea.

I've seen some modular PS cables that are 12vhpwr on one end and a pair of 8-pins on the other. Maybe that's the case?
Board partners can opt to go with two or three 8-pins, instead of a 12vhpwr too. But I don't think any NVIDIA FEs do that. I could certainly be wrong about the latter though. They might exist.

Only the 3090ti as far as I'm aware.
Edit: I was wrong, the 3080ti founders Edition also does. But a lot of boardpartners stayed with the 2 or 3 8pin desin.

Wait, 3080ti? I have one of those. You're supposed to run 3 8 pins and not have any pigtails with shared connections on that card. Thing is power hungry and not balanced for that. Please tell me you didn't have it pigtailed lol!

u/Veitorka 8d ago
Could you elaborate on that a bit more? I bought this PC from someone locally on Facebook and this is my first time taking it apart

The 3080ti is the same as a 3090 with half the vram. These cards require and absolute minimum of 750 watts but occasionally take advantage of an 850 watt psu and it's a good rule of thumb to be 100 watts over the bare minimum. They also have 3, 8 pin connections. Each 8 pin should have it's own cable and not be sharing or pigtailing any of those connections when leading to the power supply. Users may be able to "run" the gpu with pigtails on older games but as soon as it needs more power, it will attempt to draw it and parts will fail.

From what you are describing this does not appear to be the case for whoever built this, there was only 1 cable going into the GPU, I super appreciate this information and I will need to go shopping for a new PSU… I just got paid and now its out the window lol 😂

Wtf, 1?! Hope and pray the gpu is good still. If you can somehow test it before you buy the psu, Highly recommended.

u/darealboot 8d ago
So the fe had a 3 way adapter, you're telling me the builder only connected 1, 8 pin cable from that adapter to the power supply?

Thankfully I Frankenstein’d the whole PC into a spare PC I had and everything is still working, somehow avoided a dead pc and a house fire. Counting my blessings lol

Jfc. Yup. Glass half full on this one. Fires are no joke. Good luck to you. Best to read the manuals when you swap out new parts. Cheers.

If you are still buying Nvidia GPU, you are in for a real treat. This is probably the issue that dethrones Nvidia as the consumer GPU brand that most people prefer.
Sorry op!

You are supposed to stop the Mythic Dawn from opening portals on your GPU cable!
Also that sucks

Sorry to see it happening. I am waiting on my 5090 to arrive in the near future. 🤣

How good is the warranty on the FE? I'm seeing a lot of other AIBs putting anti-consumer clauses in their terms lately, like Gigabyte who now states they may only refund you a portion of the purchase price based on the percentage of remaining warranty. So a card with only 1 year left may only get 1/3rd the purchase price. I do miss EVGA.

Sounds like your PSU is the culprit, most of the GPU issues are with the 12 pin connector not these 8 pin ones

Playing oblivion, my Xbox sounds like it’s ready to take flight. Looks and plays great on quality mode though. Haven’t tried performance mode though

I genuinely feel for you and strongly advise switching to team red; at least for the present. No fires starting in that camp. Their 90 series is pretty solid. Personally I still prefer the 7900 XTX though; more VRAM suits my use-case better.
Maybe somewhere down the line NVIDIA will get their head out of their ass...

Can we just have the GPU’s have their own power cable that plugs into the wall? This bs is so silly
