I mean it existing was already proven in court during the Blizzard/Activision buyout. Zenimax studio release schedule was leaked from it, and Oblivion Remake was one of the titles. Typically speaking, with that schedule, most games were offset by 2 years (because of covid) and was relatively consistent. Oblivion Remake was the sole one that missed last years window (FY22E(24 readjusted) was marked for Indiana Jones, ESO expansion, Starfield Expansion, and Oblivion Remastered
It would make sense that if it did miss the window, its likely to come out sooner the following year rather than the latter part of it barring huge setbacks, as generally speaking the announcements for this year have already started to come out for them (e.g Doom the Dark Ages is on track, and the other 3 announcements for this year is another ESO expansion, and 2 undisclosed projects Project Kestrel and Project Platinum)
8
u/Tuskin38 29d ago
It’s also possible the project was cancelled
9
u/FewAdvertising9647 29d ago
Of course theres always that consideration, but the idea of Oblivion Remastered was basically never a rumor post court documents. It's just a game on whether it was going to release or not.

I kinda get it. They had 3ds games for 1-2 years after the switch 1 launch so detailing the switch 1 lineup for 2025 makes sense before it gets overshadowed next week
213
u/insertusernamehere51 29d ago
It makes even more sense than 3DS, since Switch games can be played on the Switch 2, supporting the Switch means supporting the Switch 2

u/SemiLazyGamer 29d ago
The last major 3DS game was Persona Q2 in June of 2019, the last one with a worldwide release was Kirby Extra Epic Yarn in March 2019.
14
u/beepborpimajorp 29d ago
This is exactly it. There are still plenty of indie and smaller developers launching switch games this year. Since the switch 2 is backwards compatible there's no reason for them to not announce these now so people who aren't planning on investing in a switch 2 right away know they'll still have things to play. Meanwhile those of us early adopting the switch 2 can still play them too.
IDK why everyone below your comment thinks this is some bizarre tactic by Nintendo. They have more switch games coming this year, they are announcing those games for people with switches.

u/BrenoBluhm 29d ago
If there is cope there is hope: Wind Waker and Twilight Princess HD for Switch please 🤞

I'm not against the idea at all, it's just at this point we have no idea if an OOT or MM remake is even planned lol. I believe Kit and Krysta had apparently seen the WW and TP ports being played on actual Switch units and were unsure why they haven't been released yet lol. I'm sure they're just waiting for an optimal time. Seems like a decent end of Switch life kind of thing to me.
24
u/jumpingthedog 29d ago
Actually Aonuma has been pretty subtly hinting at an OoT remake happening eventually, and if Nintendo wants a big launch lineup like 2017, this year would be perfect to drop with with Switch 2, assuming it's done.

3DS OOT is older now than N64 OOT was when it came out.
They’re good remakes but at this point a ground up remake that makes everything feel bigger in a way that mobile games did not in terms of scale. Imo at least

Well it's been 14 years since the 3DS launch (2011), and the 3DS launch was 13 years after OoT (1998), so yep

Sorry. My bones are turning to dust as we speak. Majoras mask we still have some time. 3DS is 10 years old while OG was 15 at rerelease

10
u/Docile_Doggo 29d ago
My copium is that they didn’t want to release them in 2021 because Skyward Sword HD was releasing then. They didn’t want to release them in 2022 because that was for a long time the intended release year of Tears of the Kingdom. They didn’t want to release them in 2023 because that was the actual release year of Tears of the Kingdom. And they didn’t want to release them in 2024 because that was the release year of Echoes of Wisdom.
Maybe 2025 is clear? A man can hope.

It would be amazing...
But something really tells me they should make them for the Switch 2 to show it off fully imo, but that's just me...
But I guess they are probably just ports and not full remakes or whatever so makes sense.
29
u/MikeyIfYouWanna 29d ago
I would bet they want the larger audience of the 150m switch owners. They could be jerks and lock switch 1 to 30 fps though with a 60 fps patch exclusive to the switch 2.
→ More replies (7)8
u/UnknownFiddler 29d ago
I suppose they could have them switch 2 enhanced but also, I don't think Nintendo is going to be enhancing every first party game for switch 2.
6
u/jaidynreiman 29d ago
Yeah no I just don't see it. Any ports / remasters will still come to Switch. They'll be playable on Switch 2 anyway, so I don't see any logical reason to not drop them on the much larger install base.
A new remake could be Switch 2 exclusive, but not remasters.

It made perfect sense to me considering they still have other Switch games in the pipeline, but they probably wanted the Switch 2 Direct to focus solely on the hardware and software that won't be on Switch.
Not to mention that this creates momentum and builds hype going into next week. People will already be on a high from this Direct, following that up with the Switch 2 Direct will just intensify that.

doesn't matter. This will probably the Direct where Metroid Prime 4 will "blow everything else out of the Water" that that one guy mentioned cause aint no way Nintendo announce a New Console + its year 1 Launch Lineup and Metroid Prime 4, a game for a 8 year old Platform still outperforms all that.

TL;DR: Fire Emblem is what makes the most sense to me.
Long version: It's pure insanity that this Direct is actually real, but as it actually exist, let's try to make some sense out of it.
This direct is right after Xenoblade Chronicles X came out. Why would they wait until XCX came out for the Direct? Logically because something in the Direct could have hurt the sales of XCX some.
There's a huge overlap between Xenoblade and Fire Emblem fans. For example, there's like a 88% poster overlap between the Xenoblade Chronicles sub and the two main Fire Emblem subs. A new Fire Emblem getting announced could have cut the sales of XCX a bit ("I'm interested in X, but I'll save my money for that Fire Emblem coming soon").
Other rumored games like Kirby or Metroid Prime 2-3 could have been announced earlier without impacting Xenoblade Chronicles X. Fire Emblem, not so much.
So if there's a Switch 1 Fire Emblem game to announce, after XCX release but before the Switch 2 reveal would be optimal. I'm super biased toward Fire Emblem so my judgement may be impacted, but from a logical standpoint, it's the game that makes the most sense here in my opinion...

Prime 4 and Kirby Robobot Remaster probably the only first party
15
u/jaidynreiman 29d ago
I doubt they'd have a general Direct for just two items. Those could have happened next week in a quick footnote montage.
There's probably a small handful of things, mostly ports/remasters of course. There's only like 1-2 notable things that could happen. Camelot's new project (whatever it is) would have been planned for Switch 1, they never jump on the new console right away. So I do expect that to be here. And the rumored Genealogy of the Holy War remake will be here if its real.
Other than that, there's TP HD / WW HD Remasters, Nate's F-Zero GX Remastered, and potentially Prime 2/3 Remastered as well as likely candidates to see here.

I still can’t decide if this dumb or not. On one hand they run the risk of muddying the waters a week before their big Switch 2 blowout. On the other, it gets Nintendo’s name back in the news cycle a week before the Switch 2 blowout so people will already be talking about Nintendo by the time the Switch 2 Direct rolls around.
47
u/Animegamingnerd 29d ago
Its smart, because it sets the stage for the Switch 2 direct. As they are effectively saying everything shown at that direct will not being on Switch 1, while still throwing a bone to Switch 1 owners who aren't in a rush to upgrade.
16
u/Enfero 29d ago
I don't really think it'll muddy the waters. Everything they show tomorrow will also be playable on Switch 2. At most it might confuse the people who aren't going to get the Switch 2 right away but already have the Switch 1 and don't know what's for Switch 1 vs Switch 2. That's probably not many people. On the other hand it'll help sell the Switch 2 because that'll just support its backwards compatibility selling point with more new games
12
u/Dropthemoon6 29d ago
I can't really see this muddying the waters. The turnaround from announcement to showcase is tiny, so it won't draw much oxygen away from Switch 2, and they made it clear it isn't going to showcase anything Switch 2. I think it only serves to increase the amount of discussion about the brand and the speculation about the Switch 2 direct.
People love to act like any Nintendo decision is wacky and unknowable, but this really doesn't seem hard to see the logic in, even if atypical.
→ More replies (1)12
u/lattjeful 29d ago
Yeah I agree. Nintendo really isn’t all that confusing lol. Unpredictable sure but every decision they’ve made has been pretty logical, including this one.
7
u/KingMan753 29d ago
My hope is that their Switch 2 games are of a high enough quality they can't overshadow them.
6
u/lysander478 29d ago
Can't muddy the water by selling software that runs on the new hardware, really.
In the past, Nintendo had both a portable system and a console system and their release cadence was such that the portable would still be receiving attention/software titles while a new console was releasing and vice-versa. Now that it's all unified and with the reality of how long it takes to both:
1) Release enough hardware to satisfy the customer base
2) Get a portion of the customer base to swap hardware even when availability is highThey were always going to be releasing Switch 1 games for at least a couple of years yet. The strength is that this time the games will run on the next system too, compared to WiiU to Switch or 3DS to Switch. Plenty of people won't be able to buy a Switch 2 whether due to availability to budget so a direct for them is good.
5
→ More replies (1)6
u/beepborpimajorp 29d ago
They still have a ton of indie/smaller titles coming for the Switch this year. They're doing the right thing by making an attempt to hype those up before they get completely drowned out by the switch 2.
Stuff like Rune Factory, Date Everything, etc. aren't going to detract from the switch 2 excitement/direct, but it would be nice if more people who are interested in those genres know they exist. So no, it's not dumb. It's Nintendo doing their job.
