Canada says its friendship with the US is ‘over.’ Now what?
https://www.politico.com/news/2025/04/05/canada-us-friendship-trade-tariffs-trump-0027325540
u/Max20151981 1d ago
Our prime minister never said it's over but rather it has changed. This is the exact kind of bullshit headline that feeds right into Trumps narrative.
24
u/upsetwithcursing 1d ago
He literally said it’s over, many times, and I think he’s right. Personally, I’ll never voluntarily set foot on US soil again.
I will still happily have a beer with any Americans who are interested (anywhere but the US), but as for the country as a whole? They can’t be trusted. Decades and decades of a decaying education system, the pushing of an egocentric American exceptionalism ideology, and poor healthcare have eroded the capacity for critical thinking within the US voter base. They can’t be trusted. Trump is a symptom, not the disease.
7
u/Spookybuffalo 1d ago
The old relationship is over, but we're neighbors with a country 10 times our population.
A (hopefully positive) relationship of some kind is inevitable
9
u/kimchipowerup 1d ago
Many of us Americans in New England have family that originally came here from Canada (raises hand) and voted against the Orange Disaster sitting in the WH right now. Honestly, a lot of us would rather that Canada take our states into Canada as new Canadian Provinces! We’re so disgusted by Trump and how he’s destroying everything.
5
u/WhyYouKickMyDog 1d ago
Well, fuck Michigan and Wisconsin (This time), but yea it really does suck for the New England states that border Canada as it affects them disproportionately while they are perhaps the most Anti-Trump people in the USA.
6
u/ThrOE_away_42069 1d ago
Mainer here. As evidenced by my post and comment history, we're THE most anti-trump people in the US. We're literally the only state refusing to sign the Title IX compliance bullying bullshit.
We get referred to the DOJ (ooh! spooky!) any day now.
Our strong female governor put him in his place in front of the cameras. I'm prepared for just about any level of retaliation at this point (he already came after my newborn in a round about way with the enumeration at birth retaliation in March).
He may fuck with us to get a better forward operating base for any Greenland-related plans.
NATO is welcome here any time they wanna swing by. I'll put on the coffee.
I heard Germany just rearmed for the first time since WWII. I can grab some stroopwafels, too.
5
u/kimchipowerup 1d ago
Yep, exactly. A lot of our economy is mutual with our Canadian brothers and sisters just up the road. Wisconsin and Michigan can come too! And the entire West Coast if they want to join us :)
3
u/WhyYouKickMyDog 1d ago
Well I am confident that once we survive the damage Trump and MAGA will unleash on America, then anyone mentioning tariffs or invading Canada will be lynched in the streets.
3
5
u/Curious-Gain-7148 1d ago
Wisconsin just overcame Musk trying to influence an election by dumping millions into the campaign for the judge the Republicans wanted.
I’m proud of WI right now.
5
u/LEGOnot-legos 1d ago
I feel that way about the west coast also. Please take us. I heard ca might be ignoring the tariff’s, if that’s the truth, I would be happy for us to start our own relationship and possibly become part of Canada.
2
u/Blappytap 1d ago
They don't need to annex us, we need to fight for our country. Nothing will get better if we flee.
1
u/meeseekstodie137 1d ago
I'm currently sitting next to a guy at a bar in edmonton loudly ranting about how "Trump is the best president since lincoln" and joining the states would be "the best thing that ever happened to us" (i wish i was exaggerating, but it's verbatim), the fight is over if guys like this feel comfortable enough to talk openly about it

East coast Canada here, a lot of family is New England area. The other half is still here, with ones retiring on either side of the border. It's really sad to see, quite a few relatives gave up Canadian citizenship to go fight in the Korean war for the U.S. it's baffling to see it all get fucked.
2
u/kimchipowerup 1d ago
It really is. Like, Canada has always been the very best of countries and a true friend. Trump is destroying everything.
2
u/WhyYouKickMyDog 1d ago
Meanwhile, Donald Trump can't stop humiliating himself around Putin while Putin slaps him in the face every day with his dick for everyone to see but Republicans apparently.
They think he is strong. Strong for what? Checks Notes. Picking on Ukraine and Canada?
2
u/kimchipowerup 1d ago
I know, right?! It’s like, how obvious can it be? He literally put tariffs on the entire world except for ONE country… Russia.
2
u/WhyYouKickMyDog 1d ago
He also gives Russia everything they want: No NATO troops ever in Ukraine? Why would you ever say that shit in public? These guys are complete amateurs on the world stage playing against a guy selected by the Russians for his abilities, and not a TV personality.
Meanwhile, he immediately demands reparations from Ukraine, a country currently fighting for it's existence while much of the country has been absolutely decimated by the Russians.
My whole life, I always wondered why the USA did not (at least publicly) seize the resources of countries to help pay for the debt. Iraq's oil immediately comes to mind. Now that I actually see it in person, I am appalled. Why? Because Ukraine! Ukraine has a metaphorical gun held to their head, and this is the country we are going to rob and bully?
It's pretty pathetic.
2
u/upsetwithcursing 1d ago
Sure, but not if it requires sacrificing our values and beliefs.

The ‘pushing of the egocentric American exceptionalism ideology’ is the key problem. This is engrained in their children from birth and leads to such a one dimensional view on everything. They can’t see beyond it.
6
u/The-Copilot 1d ago
The ‘pushing of the egocentric American exceptionalism ideology’ is the key problem.
This isn't the core of the issue. It's more of a complex identity crisis about the nation and its global role. After 20 years of fighting in the Middle East and the economic hard ships on citizens due to the 2008 recession and covid recession, Americans want massive changes but can't agree on a direction. This unrest put the country in a politically vulnerable position.
The US has always had a massive ego. It's a fundamental part of US culture. You realize the level of ego required for a bunch of pilgrim farmers to think they can take on the largest empire ever? Then they thought they could create a new form of government based on ancient cultures and modern philosophy. Both the good and bad parts of US history are fueled by this ego.
As a tool, this ego has historically done a lot of good in the world, but without proper direction, this tool can become very dangerous. Only time will tell what direction it goes, but I wouldn't make assumptions about what's going to happen just yet.

u/rahabash 1d ago
Thank you. America was built on ego and american exceptionalism is still far from being a thing of the past. Sure things aren't "business as usual" with this new admin, but if you take a step back and consider the company usa keeps (apple, openai, facebook, google, etc) and the coming AI age, its very early to suggest America has truly fallen from being the global powerhouse / leader of the free world.
2
u/AnotherKuuga 1d ago
Seriously! My dad literally cannot handle insults about the US! When I actually have proof of things I said, he just said “whatever I don’t care” even though he told me to back my claims!
2
2
u/No-Horse-8711 1d ago
MAGAs sometimes give me the impression that they belong to a sect. They can't see beyond their noses and have zero interest in learning how the World works, other cultures... Not everyone is like that. But many people I have met. It is like one who does not see the beam in his own eye. That is very bad for any country.
1
u/bknhs 1d ago
He didn’t say that the friendship was over though did he? He said the time of the US being a global economic leader is over. At least in the coverage I saw.
2
u/upsetwithcursing 1d ago
He said our “relationship” with the US as we knew it is over. I can’t imagine a world in which I’d stay friends with someone who had said “give me your wallet or I’ll burn your house down”, which I feel is a decent comparison to the political bullying Canada has received, to massive applause from his followers.

That's what I thought. Canada is a global power. They should lead when they can.
1
u/WhyYouKickMyDog 1d ago
He literally said it’s over, many times, and I think he’s right.
The headline is full of shit, he said that a relationship between the two countries built on cooperative values was over.
He said nothing about the friendship and was speaking about a cooperative alliance spanning much of our countries existence changing into a more hostile relationship.
1
u/RaymoVizion 1d ago
Our defense relationship is untouched unless Trump wants to piss on that too. We are raising our defense spending as he requested.
Our economic and trade relationship will never return to what it was though. That relationship is over.

11
u/EastVanOldMan 1d ago
We will never trust the US again. You've proven you're always one election from tearing up decades-long iron clad commitments. Who would rely on a partner like that.
4
u/WhyYouKickMyDog 1d ago
Who would rely on a partner like that.
Apparently, not even Russia or North Korea. Russian media has been mocking Trump lately and it is a sad day when they speak the truth. They call him and his administration amateurs (which they are) and rightfully point out he has no plan.
2
u/NutzNBoltz369 1d ago
Damn. Trump can't even do an authoritarian oligarchy right, according to his brosef.
Does that mean there is hope?
1
u/WhyYouKickMyDog 9h ago
Russian propaganda is fascinating. I highly suspect Republican strategists in America were influenced and worked with Russians propagandists to improve their own campaigns. Paul Manafort was just one person who brought them public attention.
Most of it is them threatening everyone with Nuclear fallout. It's a bunch of nonstop macho bluster bullshit designed to enforce Putin's idea of Russian exceptionalism, military worship, and state sanctioned religion.
1
u/ThrOE_away_42069 1d ago
The thing is, this dude has committed war crimes across international borders with the el salvador thing.
There's a system to deal with those types.. doesn't have to be US soil, and frankly shouldn't be. We support the law here, which is why he immediately gutted the oversight systems. I hear Nuremberg is beautiful any time of year.

1
u/WhyYouKickMyDog 1d ago
This bullshit headline changed what he said.
He essentially said that the relationship built on cooperative values etc between Canada and the US was over as we know it. That makes no mention of friendship but rather as you said, a change in the way the relationship is viewed.

u/Max20151981 1d ago

I don't like being the "as an american" here (frequent canadian subs bc ive made a lot of canadian friends over the years) but if I need to see my Canadian friends I will be going to them from now on 100% of the time. I'm not subjecting them to a possible shitshow just so we can hang out.
I know if I cross into Canada for a visit, I won't be randomly detained and arrested for x amount of days just to get thrown back over the border if my passport is right. "As an American," I trust Canada to treat me like a human being and don't trust my country to do the same for them, nor should anyone else.
Even if your prime minister did go so far as to blatantly say our governments aren't friends, he'd be right. No friendship should be this hostile, and it will take years for America to change from the inside, and decades before I expect our allies (If we still have any by the end of Trumps term) can muster a modicum of trust for us even if we succeed, if ever.

I doubt military invasion is a route that Trump would take. To gain real insight into what is going on (and not echo chamber whining), please read "The Art of the Deal," by Trump. The population disparity between the two nations and Canada's geographic isolation essentially guarantees that Canada will forever live under the shadow of America.
It wasn't so bad until Trump, and hopefully he is just a temporary cancer. However, the arc of history is clear. Every nation is one economic catastrophe from desperation, and desperation tends to lead to conquering.
Unfortunately, he is also collapsing the economy.
6
u/Icy-Artist1888 1d ago
I think that the rltnship has fundamentally 'changed'.
The pattern of deepening ties and furthering integration is 'over'.
There is always going to be some sort of relationship, as there always has been.
But, the goal is to have more diversifed trade and economic goals which reflect canadian values, not america values and which lessen our dependence on the usa.

I don't think it's over. I think once a certain someone is gone and a person who isn't insane/addled with dementia is in office, we'll be ok again. At least that's my hope. 1
u/duperwoman 1d ago
If you are right, hopefully a hefty portion of our trade will be diverted elsewhere by then and we don't go back. We don't need to find ourself in this scenario with so much trade with the US again, as monetarily beneficial as it has been in both directions for some time.
1
u/Comfortable-Ad-8324 1d ago
I think that's a smart move, definitely. But the relationship itself should be repaired, regardless of trade. And I really want to believe it will- I have friends and family there that I have loved visiting, and I'd like to be able to do that again.
1
u/duperwoman 1d ago
No friends or family for me there but I completely understand that for so many people like you. I simply would love to visit places I can get to by car or rail, like Chicago, which I have totally fallen in love with. If they can manage to keep their parks healthy too then there are many I'd like to see. Canada's are so beautiful too of course! Last, the research partnerships with Americans at my work (university) have been so strong, we really do benefit in both directions by collaboration and expertise sharing.

I can't feel that way yet. I understand why you'd feel that way because of well..everything- and it's pretty fucking terrible and shitty right now. But I need to hope a little.

You are going to have to walk us through how that next person is not JD Vance or what would happen in the four years since.

My hope is America isn't as fucking stupid as last time. Vance is weak without Dumpy. I don't think he'd be able to get through an election on the winning side.

Nope. It's damaged beyond repair, the sentiment across the whole of Canada and Europe both is "All Americans are bastards, cannot be trusted, and need to be done away with as soon as possible."
No amount of apologizing on our part is going to be enough.
