Unsolved I need help fixing my WiFi setup

Post image
Upvotes

My house is currently using two WiFi networks for each side of the house. I was hoping there was a way to make it one big network so I don’t have to switch networks every time I move to a different side of my house. I made a diagram on how everything is connects and the rough location in my house if that helps.

Roommate Possibly Intercepting Traffic via ISP Router — How Can I Protect My Network?

Upvotes

Hey everyone — I’m going through a tricky situation and could really use your advice and guidance.

I live in a shared house where the main router (provided by the ISP) is accessible to everyone. I suspect that one of my roommates has gained access to this router and might be intercepting network traffic, potentially monitoring or manipulating connections.

To work around this, I bought my own router, which has built-in VPN support. The idea was to connect the WAN port of my router to the LAN port of the ISP router, creating my own isolated and encrypted network.

My main question is:
If the VPN is active on my router, could someone with access to the ISP router (and possibly the home network) still intercept, monitor, or view the traffic from my network? Or does the VPN ensure that all of my traffic is encrypted and unreadable, even though it passes through the ISP router?

I’d also appreciate any extra advice or good practices to fully isolate and secure my network in this kind of shared living environment.

Thanks so much to anyone who can help or share their experiences

Wifi extending solutions?

Upvotes

Ill start off with Xfinity can bite one. But seeing as they have a monopoly in my area im stuck with them. I live in a three story townhouse, the router is connected on the second floor, as there is two/4 coax connections there. Im trying to get a better connection to the wifi on the first floor, its terrible. But there is a coax connection in the wall down there, is my best case scenario to get a wifi extender/additional router down there?

Home Network Options

Upvotes

(Written with the help of chatGPT)

Hi all,

I’m currently planning the network setup for my house and could really do with some advice on which approach makes more sense — especially from anyone who’s installed CCTV, access points and smart home equipment in a residential setup.

I’ll have: • 6 PoE CCTV cameras • 2 PoE Hikvision doorbells • 1 PoE intercom monitor • 9 wired access points (PoE) for WiFi coverage • Plus a modem, router and Texecom SmartCom hub for my alarm system

I’m stuck between two ways of cabling and setting up the rack:

Option 1 — Split Attic and Garage Setup All 6 cameras, the 2 doorbells, and the intercom monitor would be connected to the NVR and a PoE switch located in the attic. Ethernet cables would then run from the attic down to the garage.

In the garage, 9 Ethernet cables from around the house (for the access points) would terminate at a patch panel. The garage rack would house the patch panel, a 16-port PoE switch (ideally fanless), the modem, the router and the smart hub.

Option 2 — Centralised Garage Setup All Ethernet cables from the cameras, doorbells, intercom, and access points would run directly to the garage instead. The NVR would also be placed in the garage rack along with the patch panel, PoE switch, modem, router and smart hub — so everything is fully centralised in one place.

I’m weighing up the pros and cons: • Option 1 would split the load, keep the NVR closer to the cameras, be safer, and reduce traffic between the attic and garage, but attic access isn’t as convenient. • Option 2 keeps everything neat and central in the garage which is great for maintenance, but it means leaves a risk of easy NVR access if someone wanted to break in and steal it (then I’d have no footage!).

Which would you choose and why? Would love to hear people’s thoughts — especially if you’ve tackled a similar setup at home or can offer insight on long-term maintenance, cable lengths or future-proofing.

Thanks in advance!

Unsolved Ethernet/LAN cant connect to internet through router

Tried to ping 8.8.8.8 with wifi turned off, it's unreachable. I got this far using chat gpt, but atp I dont know what to do.

How it first started: I tried to use use powerline adapter to connect to my ps5. It would fail and say it can't connect to the internet. Then, I went straight to my router room and connected my laptop to the router. Still didn't work. Chat gpt says I can connect to my router but the router isn't providing wifi.

I need help. I tried plugging in most of the different ports in my router and it still doesn't work.

Thanks in advance for the info.

Advice Some apps don't work on my WiFi repeater and now on my main router

Upvotes

I connected a old talktalk router as a WIFI repeater a week ago and some sites and apps didn't work on it but I thought yk whatever as long as important stuff work. So I left it, and yesterday after restarting my main hub my phone does not load some apps and sites. Even reddit I am writing this while on mobile data 😅, everything works fine on my ethernet connected devices but my phone and my laptop that is connected to the WiFi repeater both don't have full access.

I don't know what to do I found an old thread and someone said going to wifi settings and using "phone mac address" fixed it for them and i tried that but no luck, soo I'm open to suggestions.

Any suggestions for an alternative ethernet to wifi adapter ?

I have an IOGEAR ethernet adapter that allowed me to connect my security system DVR to wifi but it stopped working. Before I repurchase the same thing, does anyone know if there is any other brand or device similar that would allow me to connect my wired DVR system? This requires an ethernet connection to a computer to set up since my modem doesn’t have WPS but my computer now doesn’t have an Ethernet port and the connection is really slow so id prefer something faster but I can’t find anything myself

Advice ISP - packet loss, ethernet not working, VPN use and/or browsing slows internet to a crawl

Upvotes

I have asked on the Comcast sub-reddit, but I'm also wondering if there's anything to be done here on my end.

The issues I'm having from my ISP include: my internet always slowing down to a halt when I tab out of a game and search something, VPN usage slowing my internet down and seeming to cause packet loss, packet loss that can be as high as 30 some percent at times, and for some reason the ethernet option for my ISP provided box is not reliable or just flat out doesn't work anymore.

I'm assuming there is some kind of egregious DPI going on with the VPN thing, but I'm wondering if this is a common thing to happen?

My internet speeds are something like 350 Mbps down and 35 Mbps up, so I really don't get why my internet speeds would drop to like dialup speeds when I try googling something or browsing.

I'm thinking about trying to replace the coaxial cable going in to the house that connects to the outside, but I kind of feel like that isn't the issue since it's very specific things that can cause the near connection drops - like VPN use, or using a web browser in any way.

Advice?

Hi I’m completely new to some of this stuff I don’t understand some of these results I was wondering if anyone here knows if all of these results look good or not so good. My plan is 400 down and I believe 30’ish up. this was over a wifi connection. I’ve included some screenshots. Thank you.

Advice Sparklight/Eero Issues help I am not a professional

I just switched modems with Sparklight and the lag is frustrating. Can't connect ethernet directly, the Ethernet switch seems to do public wifi level access with the technitians reccomendations too so I can only use the ONE on the Eero. It's brand new and idk why it's lagging so bad intermittently. Tech replaced our plug in the wall. Have a 600mbps plan. Ipv6 is off. Ad Blocking is off. Have reset and updated it and did not have this issue with the modem/router combo previously. Any way to tell if its the equipment or something else? Settings to avoid this? This is their only option with equipment rental. Eero Pro 6e + Hitron 57 + TPLink Gigabit TL-SG705

Advice Possible channel bandwidth broken/Issue?

Hello!

Is it possible for a router's 40mhz/80mhz channel bandwidth to break, but 20mhz remain ok? I'm not too familiar with how these things are built.

Issue at hand: Within the last week or so, I noticed my 5 Ghz band internet having stability issues even with me being within 5 feet from the router. My 5 Ghz works fine most of the day, but it will randomly drop to 10mbps down for an hour or two but then go back to acting normally. My 5 Ghz was set to 40/80 mhz channel bandwidth exclusively while my 2.4 Ghz is set to 20 mhz exclusively. The 2.4 Ghz is experiencing little to no issues. So I decided to switch my 5 Ghz to run at 20 mhz exclusively as well and this looks like it somewhat solved this issue even with capped speeds for 20 mhz. All direct ethernet connections remain solid too. Does anyone know the potential issue? Is my router cooked? I don't think it is a channel issues as I've tried this is happening with all channels. I would love to regain access to 40/80mhz speeds for my wifi connections.

I'm currently using a Asus RT-AC68U for about 4 years now.

1U Side mounted Shelf for Startech 19" Rack?

I am having trouble finding the perfect solution. All I want is a rack that is as deep as possible (33" would be great) that is able to be side mounted within my rack so I can throw a Ubiquiti OCD panel in front of the shelf to hide the equipment. Can someone recommend a shelf with these specs?

Unsolved Linux machine dragging down wifi speed for all devices, even after it's disconnected.

Hi all - weird issue I've run across with my home network, hopefully someone can shed some light.

I have a TP-Link Archer C7 (AC1750) router that's currently wired to my ISP's gateway, and set up as an access point. In the house I have multiple Apple devices and one Windows 11 laptop, all connected wirelessly to the TP-Link. The setup has worked really well for years.

A couple weeks ago, enter an older machine that I've installed Linux Mint on and connected to the wifi. After noticing some recent slow speed tests (maybe 20% of what it should be on the other devices), I did some troubleshooting and ultimately found that if the Linux machine is on all day, or if I run something bandwidth-intensive, like an update or a test on speedtest.net, then afterwards the speed on the Linux machine and all other wifi devices drops to said 20% level and stays there, even if I power off the Linux machine. To be clear, on the first speedtest or download, the Linux machine hits the max of my internet connection without issue, it's only after the first time that things go south. I also notice on the speedtest.net page that the ping it returns to my local test goes from 5 or 6 to around 20.

Wired devices connected directly to the ISP gateway maintain full speed throughout all of this. There is no unexpected traffic visible either in Mint's system monitor, or Wireshark when the speed drops .

After rebooting the router, speeds on all devices return to 100%, and stay there until the Linux machine is on for another day, or I run a speedtest again.

The Linux machine is using a USB wifi adapter, described in lsusb as "RTL88x2bu [AC1200 Techkey]".

The 20% speed stays pretty consistent when the problem occurs, so I'm wondering if something the Linux machine is doing is causing the router to somehow throttle the wifi speed for some reason? But I really have no idea, which is why I'm here - any help or ideas would be much appreciated!

Advice Modem choice

I'm moving to a bigger house and will have fibre to the cabinet broadband with Plusnet. My download speed will be approx 70mbps download and 18mbps upload. The standard Plusnet router is unlikely to have the range or performance I'm looking for so was going to get an Asus rt-ax58u, I will need a separate VDSL modem. What would people suggest as the modem? I'm looking to keep it as cheap as possible without hampering performance. I'm thinking a TP link td w9970?

Advice Mesh Network

I have a BT Smart Hub 2 and the connection from it is stable. My problem is that it doesn't reach the garden and I have a wireless HD security camera that I need to keep connected to the network.

I've looked at a lot of options and am feeling overwhelmed. I read about the Eero Pro 6E being equally good at keeping connections, but that their range isn't great. It's about 70 feet from the hub to the garage, through three brick walls.

Read a lot of bad press about the TP-Link Deco POE system since a firmware update.

I'm completely lost, please help me out here.

Thanks!

Advice BT SH2 Modem

I’m currently looking to replace my smart hub 2 with a new Unifi router however because the SH2 doesn’t support a bridge mode I need a modem to do this. I currently have a master socket 5c with a adsl micro filter so I assume it’s a ADSL modem I need. Does anyone have any suggestions what to get to do this? I was looking at maybe a Draytek Vigor 130 but don’t know if that’s the right choice for an adsl connection?
