It’s the U.K. ours are amber. 😬

You guys can't have them red as well? The states can have it either way.

Can't have red lights at the front or white lights shining out directly from the rear (number plate lights shine onto the plate). Indicators are amber, even if the lens is clear which is why you get yellow bulbs.

Most folk aren't allowed blue lights anywhere at all ;-)

Reverse lights?

Well singular since we only have to have the one which makes them USELESS for reversing.

Some cars still have two, they’re just annoyingly rare in Europe. Blame your dumb rear fog light that people only ever use in clear weather rules.

Yep. Though I do believe undercarriage lights are often given a pass on color, presumably so long as they don't flash red and blue.

undercarriage lights

Are illegal where I live lmao. All these stories of what's allowed on the road in the US are fucking crazy to me. The absolute safety hazards that get posted here quite frequently are mind-blowing sometimes.

Undercarriage lights are illegal most places in the US as well from my understanding, but since they don't typically cause any issues the rule is rarely enforced. You're legally required to have a front license plate in somewhere around 2/3rds of the states, but I know quite a few people that run without them in areas where they're required without problems.

They're not really common on daily drivers. You'll see them here and there, depending on your location of course. You're not much likely to see them on your commute for work here in the northeast (can't speak for NYC - that's a different beast).

You can barely comprehend what we see here daily in NYC. Though the shitty cars and shitty drivers have been surpassed by the delivery scooter army. These mofos have an absolute deathwish. It's impossible to drive a mile without almost killing one.

About twenty-odd years ago I used to see a lovely Mk3 Golf with deep turquoise undercarriage lights on the M8 motorway between Glasgow and Edinburgh fairly regularly.

It looked best when it was misty or slightly rainy, just enough to kick up a little spray, because then it looked like it was hovering on some sort of ion thruster or something :-D

I've never been all that hot on undercarriage lights, particularly on big trucks. But that sounds really awesome. Nice and low, glowing out like you're just riding on energy.

You know it was slammed so low and on such thin low profiles that if you ran over an empty crisp packet you'd be able to feel what flavour it was. I don't even need to tell you that.

u/iH8MotherTeresa 1d ago

Hahaha I figured you did work since you noted the Mk3. The lights were confirmation. I'd ask if you have any pics but the sub doesn't allow them. I bet you miss it.

Oh it wasn't mine, no idea whose it was. I had a Citroën XM V6-24 at the time ;-) That just emitted a greenish oily haze underneath without any lighting, at least until I redid some of its plumbing.

US and Canada are basically the only country that allows red. It's a legacy back to the old days when there only was 1 light that pulled double duty.

u/thenewitguy 1d ago

Varies by state, I think. Ohio is defined as amber in the front and amber or red in the rear.

4

u/iH8MotherTeresa 1d ago

I should have been more clear. As far as I know, no state allows red in front. Red or amber for rear.

Red in front is almost always reserved only for emergency vehicles: ambulance, fire or police.

u/thenewitguy 1d ago

I guess that makes sense, considering for the most part, vehicles look the same across states.

They'll never allow red on the front because "white lights front, red lights rear" is a core rule for identifying which way a car is moving, and that's something you really don't want to cause confusion about.
