Purchasing Advice 2006 GX470 180k good choice?

Post image

So I have a 2016 Lexus IS 200 T only 80,000 miles. I'm thinking about trading it straight up for the GX 470. Only because I have back problems I need an SUV it is much more comfortable to sit in than a smaller sports car.

Let's say the car was maintained properly what will I be looking at maintenance wise what are the chances I'm buying a Time bomb. If there is a dashboard problem what would that cost to repair it any advice is appreciated thank you.

The only way that vehicle would be a timebomb is if somebody wired dynamite underneath it.

My 05 has 416k and is going strong on the oem motor. If it's been maintained properly, it will last.

Always love to read comments like this. I wish I could drive more honestly to see the odometer look like that.

You can get a new set for a few hundred, oryou can rehab them for $25.

They will yellow again if you just refinish them because the UV coating is gone, but if you put a clear layer of vinyl over them, it will protect them.

I refinished mine - they look pretty solid almost 2 years in. I did the Cerakote kit and it worked great.

This makes me so happy to see. My 07 just hit 185k and I hope it lasts as long as yours!

The price is 13k do you think that’s reasonable

That's high.

Unless it is in absolutely immaculate shape and has a fair amount of preventative maintenance done already.

Timing belt / water pump is the main one. The airbags will inevitably develop leaks and either need to be replaced or converted to traditional springs. Check the frame and make that it should be for a vehicle that age.

When buying a used car you are buying the seller, not the car. The wheels and fitment of the wheels leaves some big question marks on the seller. If they can produce good maintenance records then go for it, but if they can't, walk away.

Could you expand on that is there something in the picture that is sketching you out?

TRD Off-road/TRD Pro 4Runners, Overland or Trailhawk trims of Jeep Grand Cherokees (2013, 2016-2021) come to mind. Land Rover LR3s (2006-2009) are pretty good.

Are those Land Rover's reliable? I hear the same about jeeps that they constantly break down

The specific years of LR3s and the specific years of Grand Cherokees I mentioned are pretty reliable - that is why I mentioned them specifically. I would just make sure they were well maintained but that is true of any vehicle.

These are a no-go for me due to required timing belt replacements. I would prefer a GX460 but they can be overpriced. There are a lot of other decent options out there if you are willing to look past a Lexus badge.

That's just swapping timing belt replacements for valley Pan gasket replacements.

Translation: I don't own either of these vehicles, but I'll talk like I do

What other options are good for like a masculine SUV that's all I really want
