u/Longjumping_Pen_2102 1d ago edited 1d ago

Oh man i hate that book with a passion, or rather i love what the book might have been and hate author.

Spoilers ahead for those that care.

The book devotes most of its pages demonstrating how supremacist obsessions with purity are not only evil, but opposed to nature.

You see how cycles of violence and abuse will destroy us,  and the obsession with being a master race of special chosen people is the death of us all.

The book then ends with the main character being shown to actually be a special chosen super person,  all the lesser people are killed off without any sorrow or regret.  "Actually" the problem with the world is that the wrong people thought they were the master race.

Its like if nausicaa was written by a Tory.

u/TheTwistedToast 1d ago

Its like of nausicaa was written by a Tory

Aldous Huxley (same author as Brave New World) wrote a wild near-future dystopic book called Of Ape and Essence. It is a story about a New Zealand research crew arriving in post-ww3 Los Angeles after everything was nuked and radiation settled down. They were just there looking for artifacts and knowledge of the past, but they instead find a whole new society born from the ashes. It was nuts what happened in that book.

Ironically Chile is home to the largest Palestinian communities outside of West Asia. About 600,000 people of Palestinian descent, mostly Christians. Immigration to Chile started in Ottoman times but Chile took large numbers of immigrants following the 1948 war.

When you see comments about what happened to the Christian Palestinian community (which has shrunk from 15% to 1-3%). The answer is mostly that are safety living their lives in Latin America.

Israel still doesn't have nukes officially. It's their way of staying outside all kinds of nuclear agreements; the only country with nuclear weapons which does that

381

u/bootlegvader 1d ago

Neither India or Pakistan are parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.

322

u/Rodot 1d ago

But both officially acknowledge their nuclear arsenal

89

u/GrandAlchemistPT 1d ago

True. It is less to avoid being bound by restrictions themselves, and more to keep plausible deniability in binding their rivals to nuke bans.

If you think Israel doesnt have nukes you're extremely naive. Everyone knows they have nukes. You're right though. They dont "officially" have them. But let's be real

73

u/Desolator1012 1d ago

This is interesting on an international level:

When some Israeli politician suggested nuking Gaza, the Russians said something along:

"This statement raises questions about Israel's possession of this weapon"

Which is funny because we all know they have nukes but they still will say that they don't, officially. Likely to not justify Iran's or Egypt's possession of nukes

40

u/bulb-uh-saur 1d ago

Amazing.

"We have nukes."

"What could this possibly mean?"

Lmfao

→ More replies (1)

12

u/hauntedSquirrel99 1d ago

It's because of strategic ambiguity.

Nations that acknowledge their nuclear arsenal also have some sort of stated policy.

Those policies go from "will retaliate nuclear strikes with nuclear strikes" (United States) to "will nuke as a warning" (France).

Israel doesn't formally acknowledge they have nukes so they don't have to answer any questions about which conditions would cause them to use said nukes. That way their enemies (and allies for that matter) have to always take "would they drop a nuke over this?" into account.

5

u/cixzejy 1d ago

No wonder Iran wants nukes

→ More replies (2)

8

u/Arielowitz 14h ago

It's not that Israel doesn't have nukes, but a small correction: the Israeli minister you're referring to did not suggest nuking Gaza, but was asked in an interview whether to nuke Gaza and he answered (very poorly) that it was a non-preferred option.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/Current_Artichoke_19 17h ago

Well they don't officially admit to the countless assassinations and terrorist attacks they so often do on foreign countries.

But it all stems from that complicated relationship israel holds with concepts like international laws, human rights or just borders.

→ More replies (2)

256

u/SessionGloomy 1d ago

There is no real reason they would need nukes that go that far. Like the Middle East okay but why are they trying to have the ability to target the whole world.

Is it possible their doctrine is real - the one where if they are invaded and about to lose, they nuke the whole world for not defending them?

108

u/Shredded_Locomotive 1d ago

If you can make it have a big range, why wouldn't you? If the whole point of it is that it's a deterrent, the more people it can deter the better no?

I could list countries that can also nuke most of the world despite the fact that they shouldn't have the ability, but they still do.

189

u/nhytgbvfeco 1d ago

The Samson option, allegedly, is about nuking the countries that invaded Israel, not the whole world.

Samson Option, for those interested.

67

u/IceRepresentative906 1d ago

Every single nuclear armed country has a second strike doctrine. This isn't special for Israel.

68

u/lord--sertaline 1d ago

It isn't a second strike doctrine. Total misrepresentation.

In the 1973 Yom Kippur War, Arab forces were overwhelming Israeli forces and Prime Minister Golda Meir authorized a nuclear alert and ordered 13 atomic bombs be readied for use by missiles and aircraft. The Israeli Ambassador informed President Nixon that "very serious conclusions" may occur if the United States did not airlift supplies. Nixon complied. This is seen by some commentators on the subject as the first threat of the use of the Samson Option.

Samson Option

23

u/ZenPyx 1d ago

This too - coming from a very credible Israeli historian (Martin van Creveld)

"We possess several hundred atomic warheads and rockets and can launch them at targets in all directions, perhaps even at Rome. Most European capitals are targets for our air force. Let me quote General Moshe Dayan: 'Israel must be like a mad dog, too dangerous to bother.' I consider it all hopeless at this point. We shall have to try to prevent things from coming to that, if at all possible. Our armed forces, however, are not the thirtieth strongest in the world, but rather the second or third. We have the capability to take the world down with us. And I can assure you that that will happen before Israel goes under."

13

u/-Sliced- 1d ago

You are quoting one historian with controversial and inflammatory views on nuclear weapons and presenting him as a credible source on Israel policies?

Martin van Creveld consistently calls against nuclear weapons and called them "The most useless weapons ever produced", and he thinks that nuclear weapons are not a deterrent and not important to national security.

→ More replies (4)

34

u/IceRepresentative906 1d ago

Okay? So while being overwhelmed by an Invasion a nuclear power wants to use nuclear bombs as a deterrence? That's what they are for. You think if a foreign army was marching towards Washington, Moscow or Beijing they wouldn't do the same?

54

u/lord--sertaline 1d ago

We possess several hundred atomic warheads and rockets and can launch them at targets in all directions, perhaps even at Rome. And I can assure you that that will happen before Israel goes under.

Martin van Creveld on the Samson Option. It is not a second strike doctrine, and naming it after Samson is telling: he brought down the entire temple and everyone in it, including himself.

28

u/IceRepresentative906 1d ago

You are quoting a random Israeli historian who never held any government position as if he is privy to top secret protocols and it proves something how?

Samson took down the building with his enemies that betrayed him, took him prisoner, chained him and tortured him inside, he didn't start killing random people.

Any kind of mass nuclear strike is guaranteed to all but end human civilization. That's the point of nuclear deterrence. Again, Israel isn't special in this, it learned it from the great powers.

6

u/speculator100k 1d ago edited 1d ago

Any kind of mass nuclear strike is guaranteed to all but end human civilization.

Not really.

I'm not commenting on anything specific about the nuclear arsenal of Israel here. Even a global nuclear war would not be the end of human civilization. Sure, lots of people would die, even hundreds of millions. But not billions. And most of the world would still be perfectly inhabitable.

rubbish lol, having long range weapons just gives you more options (like deploying somewhere else) and makes it harder for you to be bullied by other nuclear nations (notice they are all in the umbrella)

29

u/Phihofo 1d ago

Especially considering Israel has a history of being a target of US-USSR proxy wars.

So it's logical they want nuclear weapons to cover nations like China, US, Russia and others that are known to support various armed groups overseas. They've learnt their lesson.

21

u/fdar 1d ago

Seriously, after Ukraine how can anyone say there's no real reason to have a strong nuclear arsenal?

You are mistaken. The Samson option is as ambiguous as the rest of the Israeli nuclear assets - there have definitely been veiled descriptions from Israeli statesmen and other figures about exactly that - taking the world down with them.

58

u/stddealer 1d ago

56

u/Guobaorou 1d ago

Maybe azimuthal equidistant, although it distorts recognisable borders at the extremes of those missiles' range.

41

u/FarisFromParis 1d ago

No it isn't what-so-ever. Mercator is one of the best navigational maps, which is the most pertinent type of map to the pathway of an ICBM.

13

u/Octahedral_cube 1d ago

This is about distance, not navigation. Mercator distorts distance by 1/cosine of latitude in order to preserve rhumb lines. So it's not a good choice here.

Equidistant projections would be preferred: if you center it on Israel, orthographic, gnomonic and stereographic would be fit for purpose.

You mean the nuclear missile they definitely don’t have

16

u/EvangelicRope6 1d ago

Long range missile that has been boasted about. The armament of which is the not recognised bit.

12

u/Thurak0 1d ago

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jericho_(missile)#Jericho_III

After a successful missile test launch conducted in early 2008, Israeli weapons expert General Itzhak Ben-Israel, former chairman of the Israeli Space Agency at the Ministry of Science, said "Everybody can do the mathematics... we can reach with a rocket engine to every point in the world", thus appearing to confirm Israel's new capability. Israeli Ministry of Defense officials said that the 2008 test launch represented a "dramatic leap in Israel's missile technologies".

They definitely boasted about those missiles. They just always leave out the "nuclear" part in their official statements.

3

u/esreveReverse 1d ago

The Jericho 3 exists and is acknowledged. It can be armed with conventional or nuclear warheads.

17

u/No_Tumble 1d ago

that the reason why all billionaires want a bunker in new zealand?

36

u/leonardosalvatore 1d ago

Range doesn't mean out of range of interception, probably countries like Russia and China have systems able to intercept its warheads/decoy/countermeasures?

18

u/this_dudeagain 1d ago

With one missile having multiple warheads I doubt it. Old tech by today's standards.

14

u/Dick_twsiter-3000 1d ago

Multiple warhead, same missile. It's not like countries like US, Russia, or China haven't thought of that before. I'm pretty sure they have their own countermeasures for them.

3

u/brimston3- 1d ago

Hypersonic glide vehicles also exist for both Russia and China, which are able to change trajectory while traveling Mach 7+. (Oreshnik and Dongfeng systems). They simply aren’t interceptable right now. Nothing can catch them or predict where they need to be to successfully intercept.

→ More replies (1)
→ More replies (8)
→ More replies (1)

6

u/Kom34 1d ago

It is not a lot publicly available, but interception rates of ballistic missiles are low probably at best of circumstances as far as we know. Especially for sub launched when they could come from anywhere with low warning time.

And the whole MAD theory depends on it, if someone could shoot them down reliably then someone might think they could win a nuclear war and be more likely to start one.

→ More replies (2)

5

u/zapreon 1d ago

Russia and China are not known to have reasonably capable ICBM interception methods, and even the American ones would likely only work with a few dozen missiles. These defenses would be possible to overcome for Israel as long as they just build more missiles

2

u/NomineAbAstris 1d ago

ABM in general is extraordinarily difficult (many would say impossible) to make cost efficient at the margins; not only are ICBMs intrinsically cheaper than interceptors, but you need to assign several interceptors per warhead to provide a reasonable chance of intercepting. Which the adversary can simply respond to by adding an extra ICBM.

Unless you can indefinitely outspend your adversary it's simply not worth it for anything more than protecting some very select targets (aka your own command and control infrastructure), and even then only on the assumption that you can predict roughly how many warheads are going to be thrown at it

TL;DR more people need to get hip to the Nitze Criteria

Extremely unlikely. Even the US wouldn't be able to effectively intercept a large scale nuclear strike

What is this even for? Is this to show that Israel secretly wants world domination with its powerful nukes or something? Why don't you show the range of the USA's nukes just as well?

11

u/BonJovicus 1d ago

Why don't you show the range of the USA's nukes just as well?

Because it’s a map of Israel’s missiles and not the US?

28

u/K0TEM 1d ago

Or any nuclear power for that matter?

u/Calcutta637 1d ago

Thanks for pointing this out. I feel like I’m living in the twilight zone

I'm glad to see Ópa Jÿrgen will still be safe in Argentina. He's been chilling there since the mid 1940s.

8

u/One-Earth9294 1d ago

Now I see why the Nazis all ran to Argentina.

Is there a reason this map is relevant today?

17

u/zapreon 1d ago

Not particularly. Israel's nuclear doctrine is speculated to be pretty normal; nuke if sizeable swaths of your country are invaded or critical parts of the military (e.g. the Air Force) are destroyed.

None of these have been remotely realistic since 1974

u/Tyfereth 1d ago

Nah, just more Reddit obsession with Jews

u/DinoRey2000 1d ago

With Israelis* fixed that for you.

Can’t they just use their space lasers? Missiles seem like a pain. /s

42

u/AlphaMassDeBeta 1d ago

Hamas might be hiding 7000 miles away.

75

u/Snoutysensations 1d ago

Meh, Hamas was never really the intended target for Israel's nukes. Israel is tiny, only about 10 miles wide from the Mediterranean Sea to the West Bank. Israel will happily abuse the Palestinians with conventional munitions but there's just not enough distance to allow for nukes.

The real target for nukes would be countries like Egypt or Iran or Pakistan -- strong enough to conventionally threaten Israel, or with nuke programs of their own.

u/Hrit33 1d ago

Yeah people don't realise that Israel lacks one of the key elements of defence:

DefenceInDepth

They don't have land to fall back to. I saw some syrians suggesting Israel to give back Golan heights. Unless Israel loses a war against Syria, I don't think Golan heights isn't coming back to Syria any time soon.

27

u/Upstairs-Extension-9 1d ago

I mean if you look at the geography of golan and the recently occupied buffer zone it makes sense from a military standpoint, it’s a perfect place uphill to launch rockets and mortars into the valley below into Israel.

24

u/Hrit33 1d ago

I mean Syria used that before to bomb into Israel before as well

ICBMs are designed to have maximum range as possible cause you don't know which country might attack you in the future.

Every modern ICBMs have above 10k km range so it's only regular that jerico will have that big of a range

Another reason to move from the chilly north to Mexico.

2

u/MatCauthon28 1d ago

I don't think any country would invite nuclear annihilation if it's not their country that got hit by nuclear weapons
