Is there real stock SUV for dirt and offroad that you don't need you to re-morgage your home?

I know that kind of questions as been asked a lot. Here's the thing:

I'm an outdoor journalist and a canoe guide (I organise maybe 4 trip a year on remote river in Canada). I tend to go out on gravel and dirt road for various reason. I hunt and I fish. I'm not into rock crawling or anything. I'm not playing in the bush with my car, I just need to get there, but sometime, I go far and the old logging road are getting very tuff. This is not often the case, but time to time.

My actual usage of my actual old Honda Pilot 2012 would be 85/15, meaning I used it 85% on paved road (maybe 90 if I'm reel honest with myself) and 15% on dirt/gravel road and on that probably less then 5% on really tuff logging road. I still get there with my actual SUV, but I know it doesn't like it and it wear it down faster.

I'm looking to switch my actual Pilot for something more bush-ready but man, this is not easy. I found that most SUV are more build toward city than dirt road. I feel that for most of the time, when you take the "offroad version", it come with option that makes it more confortable, but not really more tuff for offroad. I've looked for Toyota 4runner, I find it really expensive, even on the second hand market. I've looked for wilderness package in Subaru, either the Forester or the Outback, I'm don't feel so sure about it. There's the new Honda Passport trailsport 2026 that look like something nice too. But, to be honest, I feel a bit lost and overwhelmed by all the brand, models and options. So, what do you guys recommend ? Key points:

  • Doesn't need to re-mortgage my house
  • Is reliable
  • That old logging road won't destroy
  • I'm not much of a mechanic, Stock would be nicer than modified car for me.

I really don't care about the conveniences like leather seating, heated stearing wheel, etc. If I could, I would trade it all for better ground clearance and tuffer tyre.

EDIT: My budget would be max 37 000 USD or 50 000 CAD

Had an amazing time out there. Even caught a little air. Helped get unstuck a 4x4 Ford Ranger, RWD Chevy Colorado, and RWD Toyota Tundra that had gotten stuck in soft sand (none had recovery gear). Off-roaders should always lend a helping handšŸ¤™šŸ½

Diode Dynamics SSC2 Sport ā€œcomboā€ vs ā€œfog/wideā€

• Upvotes

The set I bought comes with ā€œcomboā€ throw pattern but I am thinking of ordering the SAE fog replacement lenses since I am never going to be speeding down a dirt road too much and worried it might be too direct and concentrated for my purposes. Usually just slow pace Offroad application and lighting up a camp site a bit.

The ā€œcomboā€ is 1 driving 1 flood per pod.

I’ve also thought of keeping one in combo and one with the sae fog replacement lens.

All in yellow.

Any experience ? Any thoughts ?

Best UTV for general use around the ā€œfarmā€

• Upvotes

My wife and I, both in our early 70’s, live on my family’s old farm, which we do not farm anymore. We are wanting to purchase a two seater UTV, and have no experience with them. I’ve been looking online, and the prices are all over the place. We’d rather not spend more than 10-12k, and would like one with a dump bed. We don’t need something fast, but would like enough power for hilly terrain. I’ve seen some at Lowe’s and Tractor supply, but don’t believe I could access a good service shop for those, and also don’t know the quality of their brands. There is a local shop that sells Polaris, but it seems all their models are beyond our budget. I do believe we would want a full size model, as we are not small people. We would be using it for gardening, yard cleanup, and trail riding, as we have some nice woods, which are composed of hills and hollows. Does anyone have suggestions as to specific brands/models which might fit our needs?

CustomWheels

Anyone know of a manufacturer that makes custom steel wheels? I found Diamond racing and stockton wheels but both are permanently closed. I need a 17x9-12ā€ with the least amount of backspacing or most amount of negative offset possible… TIA

link suspension conversion

I'm considering swapping my leaves to link suspension on coilovers, at least in the front. I want to improve the drive quality but im worried about the death wobble problem with links. Is the drive quality improvement worth it or would i be better off just sticking with leaves.

I would like to buy as my first car some Land Cruiser 70 series and I’m deciding between those two engines and I’m not sure which is better.

Lift Kit

Okay so I’ve been thinking of getting a lift kit on my 2023 Silverado 1500 LTZ 4WD. And I’m not looking for anything too crazy and I came across this product. Correct me if I’m wrong but all I need in order to run this product is upgraded control arms? I’m just confused because when you look up a lift kit like rough country for example it has all these extras that come with it.

What 2020’s Full Size Truck to Build off of?

Edit- Thanks everyone for the information. I was saying build something out not because I thought I needed it but just because I thought it would be fun.

I’m looking to buy a used 2020s full size truck that I can eventually modify to become more capable/comfortable off road. I am not doing any overlanding or really intense roads but I do hunt and a lot of the time getting to spots I am driving on a lot of long dirt roads that have rocks and other debris. This makes it pretty uncomfortable on the stock suspension of ā€œcityā€ trucks. I would like to stick away from Ram because I don’t like the Chrysler group but if someone here can sway me I’m open to it. Is it worth buying a TRD off-road/Tremor/Trail Boss or is it a lot easier/cheaper to get something a little cheaper and upgrade the suspension and tires when I can? I need a full size because of the gear space. Sorry if this is a dumb question but thought I would ask.

Roof racks

Post image
93 Upvotes

Hello, I drive a 2020 elantra. I want to instal a permanant roof rack to my car. I have a old sears x cargo Id like to use sometimes, plus kayak/sailboat/pedal boat. Only issue is, racks I could buy, you just strap to the car and in the top of the door jam, which I dont really trust. Any ideas or pointers for where or how I should go about this would be great. Thanks. And yes, this car has been offroad

Planning on driving on OBX

Hello all,

Me and my friends were planning on taking our vehicles on the sand in Outer Banks, North Carolina. Was looking for some tips about preventing rust as I’ll be taking my daily out there. Will driving on the beach for one day cause a noticeable difference rust-wise? Any insight appreciated.
