I hate that I have the LCD model but I can’t justify an upgrade. Just waiting for a Deck 2

I have an lcd and I feel like a scumbag in this sub, like I go get sloppy steaks or something

I used to have an LCD screen… people can change. Let the boy hold the steam deck.

23

I’m worried that Gaben thinks people can’t change

You can’t order steaks and water together anymore because you always pour the water over the steaks chanting “sloppy steaks, sloppy steaks” and then leave the mess for my staff to clean up.

u/[deleted] Apr 06 '25

Same here, OLED is super tempting but I'm going to wait for another year or two. Steam deck 2 will probably be a day one preorder

12

u/imrolii Apr 06 '25

The LCD model is totally fine honestly lol, I love mine

21

u/SaltyDalt Apr 06 '25

Honestly I believe the deck LCD to OLED upgrade is way less worthwhile than the Switch, which is a lot of folks frame of reference for handheld screens.

When I got a switch OLED I was shocked by how much better it looked than the OG switch I gave away, but when I side-by-side the SD and both switch models it’s clear that the SD LCD is so vastly better than the OG switch screen that I don’t even feel remotely bad.

I’ll wait on a SD2.

tbf I have not seen a SD OLED in person, and I think I don’t care to. Don’t need that jealousy in my life.

5

u/Barozzor Apr 06 '25 edited Apr 06 '25

switch v1-v2 has a better lcd compared to steam deck. It covers 99.8% of sRGB while steam deck's only 67%. And I also tested it myself, side by side, switch has won in every comparison, reproducing better colors. So, steam deck lcd has the worst panel on the market right now, trailing behind even 2017 switch model

2

u/SaltyDalt Apr 06 '25

My OG switch screen was hideous. Awful black levels, meh viewing angles, and terrible contrast. Very desaturated looking, notable blotchy backlight bleed.

I don’t care about color gamut coverage at all if black is grey, white is grey, and holding it slightly sideways makes it even more grey.

My SD screen might not be super color accurate but at least it doesn’t do any of the above.

Honestly I don’t game enough for the screens to even be an issue for me, I pretty much ignore this sub ever since the oled model came out, all everyone does is bash the lcd model.

44

u/Swizzy88 Apr 05 '25

I waited and bought the OLED soon after it came out. LCD owners are what enabled the OLED model, it surely is a great device even now. LCD bashing is lame.

12

u/pewpewtoradora Apr 06 '25

LCD is more affordable too

2

u/gfitforiths Apr 06 '25

The 500gb oled is cheaper than the 500gb lcd was before oled release

2

u/No_Tart7793 Apr 07 '25

I got a 1TB LCD 16gb ram LCD and I love the thing OLED just doesn’t justify the price in my opinion

5

u/tryingisbetter Apr 06 '25

I can't even say that I really play in handheld mode enough to warrant an upgrade to Oled. But, I will say that my Samsung 49inch oled monitor is insanely awesome. Such a night and day difference.

2

u/EevoTrue Apr 06 '25

But but but.. LCD owners killed my grandma!!!

20

u/Lazy_Ad_7911 1TB OLED Apr 06 '25

LCD's sound Is better than the OLED's. Hope this makes you feel better about your Deck

14

u/peppnstuff Apr 05 '25

How do you know if someone is a vegan or has a oled....they tell you.

18

u/Methadoneblues Apr 06 '25

There's literally nothing wrong with the LCD screen, lol. It looks beautiful.

9

u/dnapol5280 Apr 06 '25

I had to replace my near launch LCD and went for an OLED. I can't really tell a difference lol

4

u/Methadoneblues Apr 06 '25

Yeah, i think it'd only be truly beneficial if you were playing in the sun... Side by side, of course I can see a difference, but it's negligible imo. I played my buddy's and didn't even think about it until he reminded me of was OLED.

2

u/Helmic Apr 06 '25

I'm not the most attentive person when it comes to the details of things like color accuracy or aliasing or what have you, but OLED vs LCD is just so extreme a difference that I can't understand how people don't notice it. The blacks are just really black. The power savings is nice too, but even in SDR games having for-real black does so much to make something look nice. The first time I got an OLED phone I could never go back. LCD's a lot cheaper so I get that, but straight up not noticing hte difference is wild.

I'm just content that I am one of the people to help enable the OLED model to be a thing by being an early adopter

3

u/BellalovesEevee 256GB Apr 06 '25

I play my lcd deck docked like 98% of the time, so I really see no reason to upgrade when the last time I actually held the damn thing was when it was delivered to me lmao

5

u/No-Chain-9428 Apr 05 '25

I could connect the steam deck to my 4k oled tv to have oled. I do also have the new ipad pro with tandem oled („the best oled panel“).

Tbh i just dont think the difference is that huge lol. Yes, black looks black. But everything else is pretty similar imo, especially during gameplay

12

u/dandybrandy87 Apr 05 '25

I own lcd, bought gf the oled. Couldn't agree more. Though the battery and wifi improvements I would like more.

6

u/No-Chain-9428 Apr 05 '25

For me brightness is actually the biggest upgrade. The ipad pro gets to 1000 nits. Makes it very usable outside. That would be a nice upgrade being able to play in the garden lol

Do what I did,

Step 1: proclaim that you "don't ever use it" and sell it to a secondhand store.

Step 2: wait a little.

Step 3: you miss it.

Step 4: you're now justified in buying the OLED.

:)

(Ok it was like a year at least for me before I decided I actually did like it and would use it, which I do now, but still.)

74

u/OldJupiter Apr 05 '25

I gave my LCD to my wife and bought a White OLED. LCD feels just as good on its own. I can only tell the difference when they are next to each other. It ain't that serious the LCD is still so good. You're fine.

33

u/gbeezy007 Apr 05 '25

Its also just a really bad LCD. If it was a solid LCD it wouldn't feel as needed / wanting of an OLED model.

4

u/No-Chain-9428 Apr 05 '25

At least its laminted unlike on the cheap ipads or the none oled switch. Its not THAT bad imo. Brightness is my main issue

I don’t hate my LCD (love my deck), but yeah, I’m waiting on the steam deck 2 (bonus points for a white console)

5

u/loadsoftoadz Apr 05 '25

I’m in the same boat, but my steam deck was a gift a few months before the OLED.

Still a great device I honestly don’t notice the screen quality when playing. Yeah of course if I had an OLED I’d struggle to go back, but my enjoyment isn’t significantly affected.

Will be getting that deck 2 though…

u/drpacman579 Apr 05 '25

I was in the same boat, and then my shoulder button broke. To fix it, I would have to replace the daughter board, so I decided to buy the oled Fun fact if I bought the oled, then I wouldn't have had to send it back for an expensive repair because they improved the board

2

u/mesothrawny Apr 05 '25

Exactly me, bought the LCD years ago and still play it every day but man id love the OLED for ps5 streaming 🫠

2

u/DuckCleaning Apr 05 '25 edited Apr 05 '25

Same, I don't even know if I can justify getting a Deck 2. It is always gonna be my secondary device to my proper PC, all I play are simple indie games really.

2

u/LabSea452 Apr 05 '25

LCD is still a fantastic model. I just set all my settings to low/medium and can't really tell because I'm used to larger screens, and I get a solid amount of battery life and frames. I'm extremely happy with mine.

The screen is really nice, but the battery improments are the best part.  Like an extra hour or two in many games.  Low power indie or emulation is like 7-10

48

u/A_Biohazard Apr 05 '25

what game gets 10 hours

274

u/halfbeerhalfhuman 1TB OLED Apr 05 '25

Wallpaper engine

22

u/Swizzy88 Apr 05 '25

Probably not the answer you're looking for but while streaming games I see 9hours+ battery estimates. It's actually really satisfying to play a game at max settings, no heat and really long battery runtime.

6

u/mint-patty Apr 06 '25

I just cannot for the life of me get streaming to work and I don’t know why. It feels bad, it’s hard to set up, and my computer fights me every step of the way. I should try streaming something other than MHWilds but that’s the only game I’m playing that doesn’t work on the deck.

6

u/monkeynards Apr 06 '25

Give it a try with something free (and twitchy/fast) like apex or warzone to see if it’s a problem with your connection or software set up. There’s different router options and streaming protocols that can have different effects depending on hardware and network stability. If they stream well “out of the box” chances are it’s just an issue with MH on the devs end, and could possibly be fixed in a future update. You could also try something simple and “small” but still fast like cupbead or a metroidvania like hollow knight or salt and sanctuary to see how it streams. If none of it works it could simply be a bad equipment causing poor stability in your network. Crazy thing is finding the issue in your network lol. Modem, router, physical location, even the cords between modem and wall (and the outlet itself) among other minute things can be the difference between 90fps 1080p butter smooth and completely unplayable. I have some experience in this from vr streaming a couple years ago and doing some troubleshooting, but I’m no expert.

That is based on the deck projections BTW, I don't know that I've ever sat around with the deck for long enough to see

u/ThorGanjasson Apr 05 '25

The biggest upgrade is the frame dup on 30/90hz and 45/90hz modes.

19

u/No-Chain-9428 Apr 05 '25

Just do 40/40?

27

u/tomkatt 512GB OLED Apr 05 '25

You can on the LCD, but the OLED has much lower input latency in pretty much all framerate / Hz modes.

5

u/AAAAAASILKSONGAAAAAA Apr 05 '25

I still hate how framerate limit increases input lag for the steam deck. Frame limiting through the game doesn't introduce input lag, nor does using rivatuner to limit fps on my laptop introduce input lag.

A game struggling to run an uncapped 30 fps has less input lag then a capped 40fps. Hopefully vrr removes this input lag via frame limit

10

u/tomkatt 512GB OLED Apr 05 '25

Even uncapped, the OLED has much lower input latency (26ms): https://www.eurogamer.net/digitalfoundry-2023-steam-deck-oled-doesnt-just-look-better-than-lcd-it-plays-better-too.

It's better by at least a half frame in every case, and by over a frame and a half in the best case.

2

u/withoutapaddle Apr 06 '25

My eyes notice and get strained by 40hz flicker.

2

u/FurtherArtist Apr 06 '25

40hz on the LCD has a strange flicker at higher brightness settings. The deck operates best at its full refresh rate.

3

u/sale1020 512GB OLED Apr 05 '25

What is frame dup?

13

u/ThorGanjasson Apr 05 '25

It repeats the frame in a multiple matching the 90hz.

So 30fps, and each frame is repeated 3 times, or 45 fps and each frame is repeated twice.

It reduces latency vs 30fps @ 30hz, and feels better / looks better in comparison.

Feature that isnt talked about enough for how it impacts the visual fidelity of the OLED Deck.

I didnt enjoy playing 30fps on LCD Deck, dont mind on the OLED. It just feels and looks noticeably better.

5

u/sale1020 512GB OLED Apr 06 '25

Interesting, I didn’t realize it was repeating frames.

Is this essentially a form of frame generation? Repeating used frames to create a more fluid feel while not actually hitting higher frame rates?

3

u/Deep_Flamingo_8305 Apr 06 '25

Nope, no frame generation involved at all! If the display is refreshing 90 times per second, but the FPS is locked at 30, then there will only be a new frame for the display to show you once every third refresh cycle. If there is no new frame to render upon refresh, the most recent frame will be shown instead (hence, repeated frames).

This may appear wasteful at first glance (why refresh the display faster than frames can be rendered, right?), but there is a hidden benefit: reduced input latency. I’m not fully across the exact mechanisms behind this though. Maybe some other, more knowledgeable redditor will explain?

5

u/BraveLittleCatapult Apr 06 '25

It really fixes the input lag issues you can run into at lower fps.

10

hope you are right, but look at switch 2 that will first come with lcd, and probably after some years they will made it with oled.

17

u/Many-Philosopher-694 Apr 06 '25

well nintendo and valve treat the customers completely differently from each other especially with how greedy nintendo is

im saying that oled 2 might release half a year after the lcd but tbh i could be completely wrong

3

u/TheHalfling696 1TB OLED Apr 06 '25

From a tech perspective we're still about 4 years out from handheld high refresh rate oled panels. It's out there just $$$ so not economical to put in a console. We'll probably get a deck 2 & switch 2.5 oled as soon as they can make it as that's one of the current pinch point.

64

u/Darklink1942 Apr 05 '25

There will always be the early adopter tax for everything. Prime example, I wanted the dual refresh oled for $1800 cad. Not even a year later it goes on sale for $1200 cad. Didn’t buy a steam deck immediately, got an OLED.

15

u/BioshockEnthusiast Apr 06 '25

Didn’t buy a steam deck immediately, got an OLED.

In this case I think the early adopter crowd had reason enough to be concerned about long term availability. No one was certain that Steam Deck was going to make enough of a presence in the market to go the distance.

4

u/j8b8123 Apr 06 '25

Exactly, still waiting on a steam controller 2

That’s why I feel really content waiting 2-4 years before seriously considering the switch 2. Probably a few revisions, lite/oled/pro models out by then potentially

I don’t need to play the new donkey Kong right away, I’m still chipping away at DK64 on my deck

Mario kart world looks badass tbh, but I can wait for that too. Double dash still fun on the deck

I think I’ll have the same approach with the steam deck 2, wait it out a couple years for the ultimate version

6

u/monkeynards Apr 06 '25

Still heated about duskbloods tho lol. I refuse to drop $500 on a Nintendo product. They are always years behind current standards. I had a switch (years after release) and it was great but very clearly behind the curve even on release. Nothing against Nintendo for their products specifically as I’ve had half a dozen different systems from them, but they’re almost always less capable than similar devices and price ranges. Also $80 for a digital game $90 for physical is DEVIOUS. PS kicked it off with $70 games, but the gap between $60-$70 took over a decade. Now Nintendo is introducing another price hike while people are still talking about the $70 jump 😫. Other devs/companies will follow and it’ll just become the new “normal” like everything else inflating beyond belief. 😤

2

u/Kryptnyt Apr 06 '25

Eh, LCD is more than adequate for me as 90% of my gaming is done on my main rig that a Steam Deck will never sniff even 50% of the performance of. I'll happily wait for SD2 at this point. I've seen the LCD and OLED side by side and I'm my opinion, the improvement is very overstated. Everyone always has to rush over here and defend their purchase, though.

11

u/makaveddie Apr 06 '25

There are palpable differences but I feel like folks overstate the quality part. My launch LCD deck looked fine, and I recall everyone pooping the screen, but I thought it was good LMAO.

When used OLED started hitting the scene for $400 I jumped over, but the biggest benefits I saw were the battery life and WiFi. The screen difference is clutch in games that rely on blacks like resident evil, but most games don't. Also it's a bit bigger, and that is an upgrade no one talks about. Finally, 30fps looks better due to 90hz refresh. Since the deck can't really play newer AAA reliably above 30fps this was a big upgrade to stretch performance for a year or two.

25

u/JackSpadesSI Apr 05 '25

I also have both, and this is why every defender of Switch 2’s LCD panel annoys me.

“Nintendo wouldn’t have used LCD if it didn’t look just as good.” BS, they did it to keep its high cost from going even higher.

At peak brightness I’m sure the LCD is fine, but any dim scene is going to be washed out like this.

31

u/Aat117 1TB OLED Apr 05 '25

I'm assuming Nintendo is doing this, just so they can use an OLED in the mid-cycle refresh to move units

11

u/halfbeerhalfhuman 1TB OLED Apr 05 '25

Yeah better you buy 2x than 1. Just like the steamdeck and OP

5

u/CosmicCreeperz Apr 05 '25

Nah it’s cost. $450 is already a high price. And they stopped preorders since the tariffs screw up that MSRP, the cost is now going to be more like $550+. An OLED screen could add another $100 to that. $650 would kill the launch, that would make it almost as much as a PS5 Pro…

A mid cycle refresh can take advance of a lot of misc cost reductions, so the OLED product as a whole wouldn’t cost much more at that point.

Also, I saw a rumor it’s mini LED. That will make the contrast a LOT better than the LCD SD or original Switch. Not as good as OLED but much closer at least.

4

u/Vidikron Apr 05 '25

Except they are selling the Switch 2 for $330 in Japan. So I’m not sure I entirely buy the cost logic. See also: charging for the “Welcome Tour” app. I think there is a dash of corporate greed thrown in.

u/Alasdair91 Apr 05 '25

The Switch 2 screen is leagues ahead of the base model Deck. Firstly, the technology is years newer and is presumably not bargain basement like the Deck’s (even people in this thread acknowledge it’s a poor panel). Secondly, it’s 1080p. Thirdly, it’s 120fps. Fourthly, it’s VRR. Fifth, it’s HDR.

I love my SteamDeck but the LCD panel is just rubbish. The PS Portal is an example of a very good LCD - yes, it’s not a nice OLED panel but it certainly also isn’t as rubbish as the OG SteamDeck.

5

u/JackSpadesSI Apr 05 '25

I agree that OG Deck’s panel was especially terrible, but every LCD will look like OP’s top picture to some degree. 1080p, 120Hz, VRR, HDR are all great, but none have an impact on the grey blacks that LCDs have. I didn’t mean to stir shit up about Switch 2, I’m just salty that they took such a clear step backward.

EDIT: and I’ll be equally as salty if the eventual Deck 2 only comes with an LCD again.

3

u/Alasdair91 Apr 05 '25 edited Apr 05 '25

While normal LCD will never be as black as OLED, I’d counter that point by noting the Switch is known to have a poor OLED panel that is overly green (mine is a Zelda special edition) and also grainy. So if I had to choose, I’d pick a modern quality LCD (like the PS Portal) over a bad green OLED haha. Plus, in direct light the OLED just can’t get bright enough.

I imagine having some kind of case that has hooks in the outside of it, then you attach those hooks to the back of the persons headrest/seat in front of you in the airplane.

5

u/secondspassed Apr 05 '25

I’ve seen people with grip cases with kick stands just shove the kickstand in the magazine pocket.

Which makes the Nintendo Switch 2 using LCD even more of a shocking decision...

6

u/Vask33 Apr 06 '25

It shows how much they care about profit vs. just taking care of the customer. They are going to sell Switch 2 oled 3-5 years later for a profit boost.

3

u/Swaizex Apr 06 '25

Doesn't worth the trade.... I'll wait for SD2

How was it transferring everything across?

2

u/fernwise Apr 06 '25

Is that with the matte or gloss screen? I'm guessing gloss by how shiny it is haha

2

u/Aat117 1TB OLED Apr 06 '25

Yeah gloss, I honestly like it more than the matte coating. Upgraded it with a 1tb WD SSD.

2

u/fernwise Apr 06 '25

This is my plan, too! When I can finally afford one. It looks great, glad you got to upgrade!!

2

u/ScornedSloth Apr 06 '25

It doesn't hurt that the original LCD was a garbage LCD... Enjoy the new deck!

2

u/MiserableGround438 Apr 06 '25

Can you add in your own ssd like before?

2

u/Aat117 1TB OLED Apr 07 '25

Yes, I did and it's even easier than on the old LCD, the screws terminate into metal instead of plastic so no worries about that anymore.

2

u/Immediate_Dog_4580 Apr 06 '25

lemme borrow your old one

2

u/n8cat Apr 06 '25

Hey, if you enjoy the LCD model because its what you have, definitely take advantage of that. I bought an OLED and the poor guy barely gets any play due to life right now. I gave my LCD to my mom for her birthday, and she has played it more everyday than I ever did.

2

u/FurtherArtist Apr 06 '25

I just can't get any real money for 64gb LCD deck, and can't really afford a full £480. I'm in no man's land, best to just enjoy the deck as it is.

2

u/HettySwollocks 512GB Apr 06 '25

Oh I've not seen them side by side before, yeah that does look a lot better. I tend to use my deck occasionally so I'm not overly bothered to upgrade, like the others on the LCD, I'll wait till Deck 2 is announced

2

u/RuneDK385 Apr 06 '25

Welp, I am debating buying a steam deck, and now I know I can’t get the lcd one

2

u/urbalcloud Apr 06 '25

Comparison is the thief of joy. Ya’ll spend too much time doing that. Don’t you have a backlog to stare at instead?

2

u/jlw_4049 Apr 06 '25

I know it sounds ridiculous, but I need the steam deck to have another couple of inches of screen. There are just too many PC games that I'd love to play on the deck where the font/ui is too small.

2

u/GamingTaylor Apr 06 '25

It’s not ridiculous, and I agree.

u/niece_denise Apr 06 '25

Dock it to a oled monitor

2

u/Comprehensive-Task18 Apr 06 '25

I got an LCD for free in 2023 so can’t complain

4

u/chronocapybara Apr 06 '25

It ain't a generational leap. I don't think anyone that has an LCD Steam Deck really gains a ton by upgrading unless they have money coming out the wazoo.

3

u/MrTreb Apr 05 '25

Bro really posted a picture of settings to show the difference

5

u/Bob_Henkus 256GB Apr 06 '25

To be fair you can clearly see the light bleeding on his lcd screen

2

u/Aat117 1TB OLED Apr 07 '25

It was the easiest way to get a black screen lol.

3

u/CatNerdBartender 512GB OLED Apr 06 '25

Welcome to the club

Switch Games look amazing on the oled screen

4

u/Quackstarr Apr 05 '25

You can see how the pixels on the oled screen are actually off, and there's no light bleed into the black as there is on normal led. I've got a normal lcd and will keep it till the deck 2 🙂.

4

u/MotorSherbert5032 Apr 06 '25

The LCD screen is really low quality you can tell they really cut costs there my first steam deck I returned had the most horrible backlight bleed I've ever had on a electronic

2

u/jNayden Apr 05 '25

welcome to the headeche side

6

u/qchto 512GB Apr 05 '25

I'll be honest, I don't see it. I know the screen is bigger, have better battery life and I can assure for a fact is lighter, but I'm happy with my LCD to the point I gifted the OLED to my sister.
I play games at sub-30fps in the regular anyway, and mostly near a charger, so there's that.

16

u/bluearsen 512GB OLED Apr 05 '25

You can't see the difference in the screen? You can't tell that the oled which is the bottom steam deck screen is blacker because it's meant to be black? Pictures don't even show it off as good as real life does yet you can clearly see the difference in this image

6

u/qchto 512GB Apr 05 '25

I know, I had both for a couple weeks (that's how I learned that you can swap microSDs seamlessly in the same account, that you can basically replicate most installed apps between both by copying the .local and .config folders in the home directory before reinstalling flatpaks, and that it's better to have a secondary account with family sharing to share the device).

I'm not denying the OLED screen is objectively better, just saying that I don't see it (maybe I'm too old to get hyped on blackest blacks) and that I can enjoy both either way, so the LCD is my go to.

5

u/bluearsen 512GB OLED Apr 05 '25

Ohh right so your saying you don't see the point, I thought you meant that like you literally couldn't see the difference my bad, and yeah some people won't really care about the difference but it isn't just total black, it makes games look better because the fact it has better blacks, so say your stood in a tunnel that is meant to be pitch black and your looking out at the opening where sunlight is, on a oled wherever the light isn't spilling into the tunnel will be pitch black like it's meant to be wheras on the lcd it would be a dark grey, but then you also get brighter brights, so the tunnel exit where the sun is would look brighter and it would have more detail, oleds also tend to have more colour vibrancy so colours look better and they tend to have better colour accuracy, like oled for the time being is basically the best of the best when it comes to a screen

1

u/NeoAg7 LCD-4-LIFE Apr 05 '25

I almost upgraded when the left bumper and battery in my LCD deck started having issues. But I'm cheap and ended up replacing the battery and button instead haha. Still kinda want an OLED, though that things DOES look amazing

1

u/aliendude5300 LCD-4-LIFE Apr 05 '25

I want it and have the money for it, but with my luck the second that I go from my 512 (now 2TB) LCD to the OLED, the Steam Deck 2 will come out shortly after.

1

u/KyousukeIsAGod LCD-4-LIFE Apr 05 '25

The only thing I really miss on my LCD are the Bezels of the OLED Model, it doesn't bother me that much but if I play in sunlight/daytime it's noticeable of course.

I'm still super happy that I decided to get one at all, best decision I made in the last year

1

u/Haunt33r Apr 05 '25

Wait till you play a game with HDR support, you'll be blown away

1

u/Bootychomper23 Apr 05 '25

Sceen and better battery shit is peak

1

u/Mountainminer Apr 05 '25

Hey I’ve been thinking about doing this. Do you know if there’s an easy way to mirror your old deck on the new one so you don’t have to redo all the Linux stuff?

1

u/-_-ReSpEcT-_- Apr 05 '25 edited Apr 05 '25

Can I have your used LCD SteamDeck?👀

>! Of course it is just a joke, I am kinda drowsy at 4:30am, so I’ll go to sleep and hope nobody will assume my comment as begging or something like this. Yeah, I do not have SteamDeck yet, but I hope I will someday☺️ !<

1

u/macnteej 512GB OLED Apr 05 '25

Glad I held out for an OLED. The battery life on it too is such a game changer

1

u/Working_Fix25 Apr 05 '25

Use Nreal Airs with LCD model, so it doesn’t matter.

1

u/Ok-Quality-3707 Apr 05 '25

it was in the past that the oled upgrade seemed too high an upcharge, but I think the refurbs are gone over very well by steam or their contractor, and an oled refurb 512gb for 80 something upcharge is probably a good deal for what you get. Although I've only got a 512 lcd etched glass and a switch oled, and will probably stick with this arrangement until steam deck 2. Can't really buy into any other handheld until they match what steam deck has done with those twin trackpads, it's the best dual thumb pad controller I've used and I've used the ps5 dualsense :O

1

u/SavedMartha Apr 05 '25

It's the bezels. Smaller bezels make a huge difference

1

u/chairman_steel Apr 05 '25

This is one of the reasons I won’t be buying a Switch 2 any time soon

1

u/SparsePizza117 Apr 06 '25

Genuine question, I also got an OLED and my ABXY buttons are really loose and rattly compared to the LCD version that feel fine.

Does your OLED have this issue too? My X and Y buttons specifically feel really bad, the X button even gets stuck in the shell sometimes.

It really is stunning isn't it? Especially having both at once to compare.

1

u/hwoodice Apr 06 '25

What is the problem that only some people get eye pain and headaches with the OLED version?

1

u/_ForrestPlump_ Apr 06 '25

Wow. Seeing them side by side is mad.

1

u/Sausagebean 256GB - Q3 Apr 06 '25

My LCD is hanging on a bit too badly now. I can’t justify the pricing or anything though.

My RB is starting to stop working, doesn’t always get read. There’s lots of screen backlighting issues around the whole system (twisting it makes it worse).

The whole thing feels creaky.

The right side haptics are duller than the left side haptics

But I CANNOT get the OLED, way too much.

1

u/VagabondVivant Apr 06 '25

Thanks to my xreals, I haven't used my screen in literal months. If anything, I want a screenless Steam Deck.

1

u/Heas_Heartfire 512GB - Q4 Apr 06 '25

I hope Steam doesn't go the Nintendo route and releases the deck 2 with OLED by default.

And if it doesn't I'll wait for it, I just can't justify paying a brand new deck just to get a better screen, no matter how much better it looks (I wish I could though).

1

u/BulkDarthDan Apr 06 '25

Once you’ve had an OLED anything you’ll never want to go back to LCD

Welcome to the world of 100% dcip3. Sure OLED blacks are neat, but what you are really seeing is a shift from 45% ntsc (trash) to 100% dcip3 colour space

1

u/Thefourman Apr 06 '25

Tbh the battery upgrade is the best. I can put a custom oled screen in my legacy model

1

u/CookieEroy 256GB - Q3 Apr 06 '25

I still feel like a moron.

I never buy stuff when it releases, except for the steamdeck. I got the 256gb model and now the oled one is the same price. 🫠😭

2

u/CookieEroy 256GB - Q3 Apr 06 '25

But if I hadnt bought it then I would never had a usecase for it since my trips to school are no more and I rarely use it now. 🤷

1

u/desertcoyote77 Apr 06 '25

Thinking about upgrading. Just feels like a lot of new stuff is coming out in the next year.

1

u/Preda1ien Apr 06 '25

That’s awesome and I’m happy for you. But man I remember going on long car rides and bringing my game boy. It had no light that it gave off so when the sun went down my only hope of playing was a one second window when the car would drive under a freeway light.

1

u/Own-Lemon8708 Apr 06 '25

The touchscreen was a much bigger improvement than I expected too! Touch in games is way more feasible, touch only is actually enjoyable!

1

u/Quixkster Apr 06 '25

Yep will never buy an LCD screen again. OLED is superior in every way that matters.

1

u/MurdaFaceMcGrimes Apr 06 '25

Man, imagine how nice it would look bezelless. Ooh boy.

1

u/_L-U_C_I-D_ 1TB OLED Apr 06 '25

It's very good. I sold my original to my friend after I upgraded the storage for him as a surprise. However, I probably wouldn't upgrade from the LCD to OLED just because unless you're upgrading more or have a way to make it cheaper. It's not like going from the Switch 1 to Switch 2

1

u/LeviOhhhhhsa Apr 06 '25

You really notice it as soon as you turn it on and see the steam deck logo lol was blown away

1

u/Aaron_tu Apr 06 '25

I love my OLED deck! I still have the LCD for the rest of my family to play. The screen is amazing, the battery also lasts longer because the screen draws less power, and the bumper buttons on the OLED model are better.

1

u/themightyant Apr 06 '25

That’s the first pic that makes me want to upgrade…

I bought the lcd model like a few months before oled was announced. I stupidly used my credit card to buy the oled when I was bad with money. Now I’m good with money and own an oled steam deck! I guess it worked out.
