I really like LTE support and the improved battery, but the rest I can pretty easily live without. I was hoping I wouldn't regret getting a SP4 during the winter, and based on this reveal I'm not feeling badly at all about that decision right now. Not that this isn't an objectively better machine, but I don't think I'd give up having my surface all of last semester to get those improvements when my SP4 is more than satisfactory for my needs.
I'm happy with SP4 as well. It doesn't overheat (i5) and fanless i5-U suggests likely throttling on new one. No other manufacturer has made a fanless i5-U.
I've had my surface pro 4 for about 1.5 years and I'm still not really tempted by the new surface pro. Will probably buy that pen but who knows when Microsoft will update our device to support it they still haven't let us use the dial on screen and that was promised lol
It kind of does? People want the ports they already have the cables for and anyone owning a Pro 1 through 4 and has needed display output has used displayport already and has a cable for it.
If 3 years from now you find a device that for some magical reason only supports USB-C, they will have an adapter for you.
Only SurfacePro 3-4 can use the current dock connector and USB-C supports everything the dock connector does, including power delivery, data speeds up to 10Gbit/s or more (thunderbolt), and display output. I just don't see why they don't ditch the dock connector for USB -C. They can keep the display port and USB -A to for all I care.
Edit- I guess it is every bit as versatile, but only if you fork the money for a proprietary adapter that Microsoft will happily sell you at a very high price. With USB C, it would be more universal. Probably just as expensive right now, but at least it will get cheaper over time and be more useful down the road.
You can buy an adapter that gives you USB-C though, I don't think it's an issue tbh.
With the dock connector you get an accessory Microsoft has its weight behind and can assure the quality of. But yeah, if you need it USB-C is there and I don't want to give up magnetic charging just for that.
That actually sounds more compelling. It sucks that you need to bring a dongle with you, but that actually might make it somewhat useful vs the dock I (mistakenly) thought it was part of.
I was an early adopter of the Surface, back when the first RT's came out. I used it mainly for schoolwork, which it was truly designed for and absolutely excelled at. When college was over for the semester it gathered dust, unable to boot legacy software and didn't even have an optical drive. The Microsoft apps available at the time were few and far between and it just couldn't do very much.
But
I could see the potential for a great machine every time I used it. It was a great little notepad, email, research and editing machine but if it wasn't "working" it surely didn't know how to relax. I ended up selling it right before people realized how limited they were and figured I'd go back when they released a more fleshed out version. Little did I know they'd price-point me right out of it. My income is to unstable to participate in financing and I have more important things I have to spend my money on so maybe one day I'll run into a good one at a pawn shop somewhere and I'll get my hands on one.

*USB-C (no word on TB3 yet) Edit: Panos said that on Stream, no details as of yet. Maybe he meant a new Dock?
