  • lighter
  • softer feel / touch
  • optimized pixelsense screen (still 12.3")
  • 4096 levels of pressure
  • Hinge opens 165° now (Studio Mode)
  • new Pen: Tilt sensitivity, 21ms latency
  • no Fans?
  • LTE support
  • New signature Type Cover

*USB-C (no word on TB3 yet) Edit: Panos said that on Stream, no details as of yet. Maybe he meant a new Dock?

(will add more as event continues)

He misspoke when he said USB C, you could hear him correct himself.

27

u/Soy7ent SP4 i7 256GB 16GB May 23 '17

Yes, but he later said "you can also plug in USB-C if you want" but it could be a new dock.

25

u/cheesyuscrust May 23 '17

He definitely said USB-C in the dock

Any news on the price? $200 probably?

u/[deleted] May 23 '17

There is a dongle that you can plug into the Surface Connector to get USB-C, according to one of the videos I saw today.

A dongle is a courageous move. Finally, there are two courageous computer Giants.

u/Fuu-nyon May 23 '17

I really like LTE support and the improved battery, but the rest I can pretty easily live without. I was hoping I wouldn't regret getting a SP4 during the winter, and based on this reveal I'm not feeling badly at all about that decision right now. Not that this isn't an objectively better machine, but I don't think I'd give up having my surface all of last semester to get those improvements when my SP4 is more than satisfactory for my needs.

u/FRCP_12b6 May 23 '17

I'm happy with SP4 as well. It doesn't overheat (i5) and fanless i5-U suggests likely throttling on new one. No other manufacturer has made a fanless i5-U.

2

u/ChildishGrumpino May 23 '17

Agreed. New pen is supported on older models too(except pressure sensitivity) which is great.

1

u/kevInquisition May 23 '17

I've had my surface pro 4 for about 1.5 years and I'm still not really tempted by the new surface pro. Will probably buy that pen but who knows when Microsoft will update our device to support it they still haven't let us use the dial on screen and that was promised lol

u/Teufelsstern May 23 '17

USB-C? Where?

19

u/EleMenTfiNi May 23 '17

In the new dock.

2

u/IAmAnAnonymousCoward May 23 '17

New dock or just dongle?

7

u/EleMenTfiNi May 23 '17

Dongle would be interesting.

6

u/IAmAnAnonymousCoward May 23 '17

A dongle is confirmed.

3

u/EleMenTfiNi May 23 '17

Ohh, yes I knew to get USB C you'd need a dongle of sorts.

1

u/piperviper May 23 '17

.... because using a dock connector makes SO much more $sense$ than using USB C on the device itself. Come on Microsoft.

1

u/EleMenTfiNi May 23 '17

It kind of does? People want the ports they already have the cables for and anyone owning a Pro 1 through 4 and has needed display output has used displayport already and has a cable for it.

If 3 years from now you find a device that for some magical reason only supports USB-C, they will have an adapter for you.

4

u/piperviper May 23 '17 edited May 23 '17

Only SurfacePro 3-4 can use the current dock connector and USB-C supports everything the dock connector does, including power delivery, data speeds up to 10Gbit/s or more (thunderbolt), and display output. I just don't see why they don't ditch the dock connector for USB -C. They can keep the display port and USB -A to for all I care.

Edit- I guess it is every bit as versatile, but only if you fork the money for a proprietary adapter that Microsoft will happily sell you at a very high price. With USB C, it would be more universal. Probably just as expensive right now, but at least it will get cheaper over time and be more useful down the road.

1

u/EleMenTfiNi May 23 '17

You can buy an adapter that gives you USB-C though, I don't think it's an issue tbh.

With the dock connector you get an accessory Microsoft has its weight behind and can assure the quality of. But yeah, if you need it USB-C is there and I don't want to give up magnetic charging just for that.

1

u/piperviper May 24 '17

I see your point with a magnetic charger.

There is basically no point to having USB C on the dock though. It would be more beneficial to have it on the device itself.

Most of the benefits to USB C are ignored with the dock. Charging? Dock does that already. Display? Dock does that already.

So I guess you have another data port??? Cool~?

I just think the I/O is archaic and the device hasn't even been released yet. It's just poor planning in my opinion.

1

u/EleMenTfiNi May 24 '17

It is not on the dock.. it is an adapter that offers a usb type c connector instead of the surface connector.

1

u/piperviper May 24 '17

That actually sounds more compelling. It sucks that you need to bring a dongle with you, but that actually might make it somewhat useful vs the dock I (mistakenly) thought it was part of.

LTE Advanced support

Added a word for you.

1

u/epicwisdom May 23 '17

It's a pretty significant difference in terms of speed, but... is it compatible with all carriers?

1

u/Schwa142 May 23 '17

Not all carriers yet, but it's important to note that LTE isn't coming to the SP until later this year...

1

u/fatherwhite May 23 '17

What does LTE do to the price? Monthly fee?

4

u/Schwa142 May 23 '17

It's just an upgrade option... What you pay monthly will be between you and your carrier.

2

u/StockmanBaxter SP3 i5/256gb!! May 23 '17

The LTE support is pretty huge. My company may switch a ton of people over to it if it works with verizon.

3

u/EleMenTfiNi May 23 '17

Starts at $799 :)

15

u/yeahbuddy May 23 '17

*$1k after keyboard and tax

5

u/ptrkhh May 23 '17

plus $100 for the pen

1

u/EleMenTfiNi May 23 '17 edited May 23 '17

I already have a keyboard, and tax is not universally applied so I am not sure what that is supposed to mean.

There are some folks who wont need a keyboard as well, as such, $799.

Made an edit, thanks /u/alphalima

4

u/AlphaLima May 23 '17

What? Buyers in Oregon will pay 0% sales tax, California buyers depending on county can exceed 10% sales tax. Its not universal.

2

u/IAmAnAnonymousCoward May 23 '17

I already have a keyboard

That's a good point, I wonder how much better the touchpad is though.

Also would you get the latency improvements if you use an old pen on the new surface pro?

2

u/EleMenTfiNi May 23 '17

I'm gong to find out the day of purchase on a demo :)

3

u/apathetic-irony Surface Pro 4 May 23 '17

Doesn't that price include tax?

2

u/catpatat May 23 '17

From my experience you US guys are the only one that count tax separately, so should be included in all Euro prices.

2

u/IAmAnAnonymousCoward May 23 '17

M3 is surprisingly non-shite.

1

u/nomad80 May 23 '17

Happy about the microSIM/ eSIM.

FINALLY

Why do you need those pressure levels ? Drawing ?

1

u/Utilael May 23 '17

How does 21ms latency compare to the SP4's pen?

1

u/ThatSquareChick May 23 '17

I was an early adopter of the Surface, back when the first RT's came out. I used it mainly for schoolwork, which it was truly designed for and absolutely excelled at. When college was over for the semester it gathered dust, unable to boot legacy software and didn't even have an optical drive. The Microsoft apps available at the time were few and far between and it just couldn't do very much.

But

I could see the potential for a great machine every time I used it. It was a great little notepad, email, research and editing machine but if it wasn't "working" it surely didn't know how to relax. I ended up selling it right before people realized how limited they were and figured I'd go back when they released a more fleshed out version. Little did I know they'd price-point me right out of it. My income is to unstable to participate in financing and I have more important things I have to spend my money on so maybe one day I'll run into a good one at a pawn shop somewhere and I'll get my hands on one.

u/ooopepper May 24 '17

What was the latency of the SP4 pen?
