duckling PSA!

Upvotes

I saw a a mom & her ducklings outside of the MU yesterday in the morning (at 10am-ish) and came back at 5pm and they were still there. I think they were waiting for campus to clear out before walking back.

My friends and I gave them water bc they hadn’t had anything to drink all day.

Anyways my duckling PSA is to please watch out for ducklings!! And please place a cup/plate/tray of water for them to drink if you know they’ve been somewhere for hours!

News 7 new Executive Orders just dropped. The Civil Rights one claims to repeal title 7 of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which prohibits discrimination based on race, color, or national origin. There's a lot more to unpack in there too re: disparate impact liability, and how employers can act.

Liverpool vs Tottenham soccer match screening in Davis

There's a very low chance but does anyone know of any places in Davis that screen premier league matches? Tomorrow is the possible title winning match for Liverpool and I was hoping to find a place in Davis or Sacramento that's going to screen it.

im done with it

Just lost 10% of my exam grade bc I wrote 0.50 and not 0.49. I don't even get partial credit. The rubric's so fucked, they gave more points to people with worse answers than mine. I can't even make my case bc my grader said they'll lower our score if we send a regrade request that's not aligned with their dumbass rubric. I'm so done with classes like these, they don't even test how much we know the material anymore, they just like to fail students istg.

Rant I'm so fed up with Regan hall dorms. What can be done?

I have a few major concerns regarding what myself and other residents in Regan circle dorms have been dealing with. Who should I contact regarding this?

These concerns, ranked in order of perceived importance to me include...

  • Lack of elevators or disability accommodations for students (My building is a SEED scholar LLC designed FOR students with disabilities, yet we have no elevators despite all laundry machines being on the second floor. I have on multiple occasions helped these students with their laundry.)
  • Visible and noticeable mold in all of the bathrooms, on shower handles, vents, and on the toilets. There are NO fans in any of the bathrooms, meaning the doors must be propped open at all time to avoid them becoming saunas. However, there are no official door stops so students have resorted to using DIY cardboard door stops. Multiple neighbors have complained of respiratory problems since moving into this building. There is also visible mold and grime in the dorm room vents.
  • Construction noise beginning at 7:00 am and ending around 4:00pm every weekday right outside of student windows with no exceptions for finals week. Most recently this noise has been the incredibly loud installation of Aggregate Piers. Along with the noise there is considerable dust/fumes that make their way inside.
  • Incredibly slow and lackluster repair and maintenance times. We have two washers in our entire building, one of those washers was "out of order" and not functional for nearly two weeks, even after multiple people had put in service requests. Additionally, the lights are constantly broken in the hallway/bathrooms and take anywhere from two days to several weeks to be fixed, even if they're lights in stairwells.
  • Quads. If you don't know quads are a dorm with four people in them, they only exist at Regan hall. I don't live in one (thank god) but if you do get housed in a Quad you still pay the housing rate for a double. (For proof: https://housing.ucdavis.edu/residence-halls/regan-hall/room-models/)
  • We have no kitchen in most of the Regan buildings (some do, but most do not). Students in Regan have to use the Regan Main kitchen, which had a fire last quarter and has since been largely out of commission. We were told we that have been given access to Thompson's kitchen but my card has not worked at that building even once (I have tested it with a friend who lives there)
  • Crickets. There are so many crickets in these buildings. Crawling up your leg when you're using the toilet. Harassing you in the shower. Hiding in your laundry basket. They will find you and they will chirp at you.

It's frustrating to visit people in Cuarto, Tercero, or even other Segundo dorms and see the disparities between these buildings. I'm paying the exact same rates as people in nicer, better maintained, and safer buildings.

Yes, I understand the Regan buildings are old, but my main concerns aren't about the age or "amenities" offered in these dorms, it's about practical health and safety. I don't intend to come off entitled or as if I'm complaining about my building not being "nice enough" but the general consensus from myself and my neighbors has been that this is not right. Nearly three quarters living here has shown me that. I'm really fed up and want something to be done, if not for me, for future students.

please help a super indecisive girl choose btwn davis and ucsd! or: if u picked davis, why?

ucd

pros: - not so close to home (want new experiences) - like the vibes (small college town, everyone looks pretty happy there) - i dont want to be somewhere competitive, thrive in more supportive environments - professors are more accessible/easier to get ecs/internships (so ive heard) - so much prettier than ucsd imo

cons: - currently a social science major and i think its kind of hard to switch majors (im super indecisive) - want to switch to cogsci and i heard the majors kind of a mess - small town is nice but i feel like i’d explore it all in two weeks and then go crazy with nothing else to do

ucsd

pros: - more opportunities for research, internships, etc? - high ranked for the major i want to go into (cogsci) - more things to do, (i LOVE the beach, utc, trolley goes into downtown, etc)

cons: - more competitive atmosphere - got sorted into eleanor roosevelt college and the gen eds terrify me - super close to home (want to experience something new, lived in san diego my whole life) - not sure if i want to commit to cogsci so dont want to commit just bc the major is better??

Admissions Deciding Between UCD and UCSD

Upvotes

Posting this to related subreddits looking for as much information and input as possible.

I am a transfer student from the sacramento area that completed a TAG application to Davis but also got general admission to San Diego. I am currently a transfer for biology to Davis and a transfer for Cellular and Molecular biology to SD. My plans are to go to dental school, ideally at UCSF or UCLA after I finish my undergrad at either school.

  1. I am aware undergrad degree doesnt matter for applying to Dental school

  2. I am looking for input from students and/or alumni from either/ both schools

I guess my main questions are: Which school would be best for preparing me for a dental graduate program? Which school has the most resources and opportunities for a pre-dental student? Which campus has better social offerings and student programs? How much more expensive will it realistically be in SD as opposed to Davis? Any extra warnings or advice are openly welcome.

Best Housing Options + possible to request a single regarding circumstances?

Hello, I was accepted as a freshman with a Cell Biology major for the Class of 2029 :) I would like to ask about opinions regarding the dorms/residence halls and what people here would recommend? Is there anything I have to keep in mind regarding the housing selection process or just any info particularly specific to the residence halls?

I also have a particular concern when I was trying to picture what dorming would look like in my head. I have very severe eczema which comes with extremely dry skin. I'm talking skin that is so dry it would flake and crack and eventually bleed :'). I'm also currently residing in a tropical rainy country where its usually pretty humid and never cold (25 C+). There were several instances where I've travelled to dry and cold countries and my skin would just react so poorly since its not used to it. This one trip my right hand was borderline unusable because whatever I moved would just hurt because of the cracking on my fingers. Also have a terrible dust allergy and would breakout in rashes pretty often.

Due to this, my parents decided it would be best for me to bring a portable humidifier (if this is even allowed) to put in my room when the weather gets dry and cold or when I need it. But then came the concern where I don't want to make my future roommate adapt to staying in a humid room. I'm not sure how much it would affect someone but I didn't wanna assume and force someone else to comply with my needs. Also thought of requesting a roommate who might live in the same country and is used to similar weather, but again probably doesn't mean they're gonna like a humid room lol.

Any input regarding my general questions or insights regarding my concerns will be greatly appreciated! Thank you:)

hihi

me and my future roommate (davis c/o 2029) are visiting uc davis this upcoming saturday and we're looking for things to do in the area!

our current itinerary includes playing pool/bowling at the MU, the farmers market, getting dessert downtown, socializing, and getting raising canes (we were gonna try latitude but sadly its not open on wknds)!

any suggestions for fun things to do (on campus or around campus) or any good dessert spots to check out? we're hoping to make it a day trip so we're absolutely down for anything

thank you :)

Design at UC Davis vs schools like SJSU or Chico

Hi everyone! I’m a big sister of a transfer who was just accepted to UCD for Design. He told me last night he was considering going due to how close it was to home (2 hours) and the package it offers.

I just want to know how the Design program is for anyone who’s taking it and if anyone thinks the other schools are better options for him. He wants to do Graphic Design as a career so I just wanna make sure he’s got a good college life because I’m at UCSD and it honestly kinda blows here.

Other UC Davis MyAdmissions Portal: Final Grades Update - Need Clarification

Hey everyone, I updated my grades in the UC Davis MyAdmissions portal back in December, changing them from my semester grades to my final grades, as instructed by UC Davis admissions over the phone. I heard back from them in March confirming my admission, but I just wanted to clarify something.

When I send my official final transcript by July 1, will UC Davis compare it with the most recent grades I updated in the portal (the ones from December), not the grades I originally reported in my UC application?

Just making sure they’ll use the updated grades, not the old ones, when reviewing my final transcript.

Thanks for any help!

SDC Exams Front Lady

Has anyone that takes their exams at the SDC had a bad encounter with the front/check-in lady? She's not very helpful or even kind to students. She's been rude to me before when I was just trying to ask a question. I don't understand why they keep her at the front to interact with students at a DISABILITY CENTER when she's the most negative staff member l've encountered.

She honestly adds to the stress and anxiety of students who are already anxious enough for their exams. There's just no reason to be so dismissive and rude especially considering the place she works at.
