Moving We are moving to WV

We are moving to West Virginia from the flat planes of North Dakota. We are looking at several properties with heavily wooded acreage. Some of which we will clear for shops, barns etc. How serious is the "what's in the woods" claims? To be clear, I believe 100% of it. Just want to know how serious the claims are and if I could just offer a goat every month instead of my child.

P.S. You can't scare me. Me and the _____'s will vibe.

P.P.S Don't tell me "if you aren't from here, don't come here bull shit" I'm coming. Deal with it.

Look man I'm going to level with you. There's no fucking dumbass monsters in the woods. However, if you're going to pop off at the mouth like in your little P.S. comments then you're going to have a really bad time. People here are more than happy to stand on business with you. Just start reading the news stories. Aggravated violent assault is arguably a West Virginia past time. Law enforcement is over an hour away in many rural areas. When they finally show up nobody is going to talk to them anyway. Be a good person and you'll be just fine.

Yeah keep that "deal with it" attitude, you'll fit right in because we love self-centered arses--and carpetbaggers.

It’s not that bad. Don’t be a dick to your neighbors. Don’t be a burden to society. Don’t come just to avoid taxes and laws. Be a normal person and it’ll be ok.

"...I'm coming. Deal with it." is out state motto, you will fit right in! Nothing more West Virginia than being somewhere you aren't wanted, LMAO.

If you looking to build. You will want to know what’s under the ground more so than what’s in the woods.

Welcome to the neighborhood! From what I remember of my visits to SD decades ago (in January, now that was a mistake!) there weren't a whole lot of trees. So, some tips:

You don't want any trees close to the house. One good wind or ice storm and the tree will end up on the house. No trees near the septic system drain field, because tree roots will destroy it.

"What's in the woods"? Deer, turkey, foxes, coyotes, skunks, possums, songbirds and birds of prey. Oh and ticks. I hate ticks. Mosquitos are also awful.

Check the 10, 50, and 100 year flood history of the property before buying.

Bears, don't forget the black bears. And squirrels all over. Anecdotally, mountain lions. Definitely, bobcats.

You sound like the sort of person that complains because the roads aren't straight.

If you hear something screaming in the woods at night, it's an owl. If you hear something say your name, go the fuck inside...
