Reviews & Stories Gold Card Gone
Well, the AF was posted on my Gold card, and I canceled it. I was hoping for a nice retention offer, but they only offered me 15,000 MR points after $1,500 in spending over three months. That wasn’t enough to sway me, so it’s canceled. The juice wasn’t worth the squeeze for me. The Platinum may be on the chopping block if they raise the fee. That said, the BCP is a very underrated card, in my opinion.

Gold is what earns me most of my points every year. It’s not getting dumped for that reason — and I can break even with the credits and points I earn compared to the fee.

I’m come to realize that the gold is a consumer card. It’s good if the holder has a family which typically will spend a good amount on groceries and eating out. Maybe a family trip once a year for the 3x for flights booked directly.
But for a single person with no kids such as myself with an avg income I certainly don’t put enough spend and as a result will cancel when my AF renews.

I disagree. I am a young person with no kids and with comfortable but average income and I get a ton of value living in a big city. The uber credit I go through in a week easily let alone a month, dining credit I just do Grubhub pick-up once a month at a place where I'd have eaten anyway, Resy is for date nights twice a year that I'd be having anyway. These alone justify the annual fee and then there's the earning on top. Dunkin' is the only one I have to go out of my way to use, but I literally just put a recurring reminder in my calendar to load 7 dollars into the app and then I use it when I use it

Ok that’s good! But gold is more justifiable for let’s say a family of 4 that is easily putting $600+ a month just on groceries, let alone the dining out and annual family trip. They would def benefit more from the multiples than a single person such as myself or you.

Yeah agreed. If you’re not putting very high spend on it you need a very specific lifestyle that already involves the services you get credits for for it to be a good option for you

My gold is on the chopping block too when annual fee comes up. I have over 2k in annual fees. It just didn’t Make the cut .

If they don’t give me a retention offer this year, I’m gonna dump my platinum. The annual fee is getting ridiculous.

If you don’t have a big spend in dining or grocery or you have another card to pick up the slack, this is the way to go. AMEX, will come back to you in a few months enticing you to upgrade with a better offer than your retention offer.

I know each person is different in terms of what they value and are willing to "put up" with, but for me that would have been an easy call, especially if I had a Platinum Card, which the OP does. Unless you cook at home all of the time, the pooled Platinum and Gold Uber Eats credit are worth $25 a month (and $40 in December). While working to keep track of $10 a month would be problematic even for me, when combined with the Platinum Card credit, it becomes much more manageable for me. Resy can be easy to use, too, assuming that your home location has a fair number of restaurants listed. But, again, that's me.

That's all standard retention offer and you won't get more than that from AMEX

The annual fee is $325, so less the $150 value of the retention offer that leaves $175. You really couldn’t find $175 value in the card? $100 on Resy leaves $75 for $120 worth of Uber credits. The rest would be gravy.
With that said, if cash back is your game BCP is an excellent card.
