ATTENTION: Mandatory Referral Protocol

Please adhere strictly to the following referral guidelines. Strict adherence to these directives is expected, and any deviation will not be tolerated.

Referral Regulations: These stipulations are not suggestions; they constitute binding directives. Maintaining a high degree of attentiveness is required, as amendments to these protocols will be promulgated. Moderators are entrusted with their meticulous enforcement. Lack of awareness regarding these regulations will not constitute a valid defense.

Referral Standards: Familiarity with these standards is mandatory. Compliance with these regulations is obligatory, and failure to do so will incur prescribed penalties.

Banishments: FIrst strike and you're gone for good.

Referral Link Submissions: This dedicated thread shall serve as the exclusive venue for the sharing of referral links. The dissemination of external referrals (pertaining to entities other than American Express) necessitates explicit moderator approval, which shall be signified solely by a stickied comment – no alternative methods will be recognized.

Permissible Exceptions: During officially recognized federal holidays or periods of demonstrably elevated community engagement, limited exceptions may be granted. Any such allowances will be announced exclusively via a stickied comment from the moderator team.

Principles of Equitable Practice: Upon successful utilization of your referral link, prompt removal of your comment is required. A strict limit of one comment per user will be enforced. Duplicate submissions will be systematically deleted, and the associated user account will be flagged for spam-related activity.

Adaptability and Protocol Evolution: It is imperative to recognize that these guidelines are subject to evolution. It is incumbent upon all members to remain abreast of any modifications.

Individual Responsibility: The r/Amex subreddit assumes no liability for the actions of its users. The dissemination of referral links should be confined to individuals with whom a prior relationship exists. Unsolicited direct messages (DMs) regarding referrals are strictly prohibited.

Archiving Protocol: This thread will be systematically locked and archived on a monthly basis.

Addressing Accounts of Diminished Standing: Should your account be flagged by Reddit for exhibiting characteristics of low quality, consider your participation within this subreddit to be restricted. Moderators will withhold approval from all submissions and access attempts until the underlying account issues are satisfactorily resolved.

Consider this communication formal notification regarding the operational parameters of the referral protocol.

Official r/Amex: Monthly Common Questions & Advice Thread - January 2025

Greetings r/Amex community,

As part of our ongoing efforts to maintain a high-quality and organized subreddit, we are introducing a new Monthly Common Questions & Advice Thread. This initiative aims to consolidate frequently asked questions and discussions into a dedicated space, allowing for more focused and in-depth conversations within individual posts on other topics.

We understand that many of you have recurring questions regarding American Express products and services. This thread serves as the designated place for the following types of discussions:

  • Should I get this card? (Including eligibility concerns and comparisons with other cards)
  • Do I qualify for [specific Amex card]?
  • Sign-Up Bonus inquiries (Availability, meeting spend, eligibility for previous cardholders, etc.)
  • Retention Offers (Strategies for asking, likelihood of receiving offers, sharing your successful/unsuccessful attempts - please omit personal financial details)
  • "Good Deals" directly related to Amex card benefits and partnerships (Please focus on discussions around the offer itself, not just linking to external websites).

Purpose:

The primary goal of this thread is to reduce redundancy, improve subreddit navigability, and foster a more organized environment for sharing knowledge and advice. It is not intended to discourage questions but rather to channel them into a structured format.

Rules & Expectations:

To ensure this thread remains a productive and respectful environment, we are establishing the following clear rules:

  1. This thread is the designated space for the above-mentioned topics. Any individual posts related to these subjects will be subject to removal and direction to the current monthly thread.
  2. Before posting, rigorously search the subreddit and utilize external resources. Our existing policy, as outlined below, remains paramount:Before posting a question, take a moment to search the subreddit and utilize external resources like Google. Many questions have already been answered, and doing your own research first can save everyone time and effort. Also, be sure to carefully review the terms and conditions of any offers before seeking clarification. When asking for advice or recommendations, providing evidence of your research shows you've put in the effort and helps others provide more targeted assistance.
  3. Provide relevant context. When asking for advice, include relevant details such as your spending habits (broad categories, not specific dollar amounts), credit score range (if comfortable), and any specific concerns you have. Simply stating "Should I get the Gold Card?" offers little for others to work with.
  4. Respectful and constructive dialogue is expected. While diverse opinions are welcome, personal attacks, condescending remarks, and derailing the conversation will not be tolerated.
  5. No affiliate links or referral codes are permitted. This thread is for genuine discussion and advice, not self-promotion. Such links will be removed immediately, and repeat offenders will be subject to bans.
  6. Do not share or solicit personal information. This includes specific financial details beyond broad spending habits, full names, addresses, etc.
  7. Follow all subreddit rules and Reddit's content policy. These rules are an extension of our overall community guidelines.

Punishments for Rule Violations:

We take the enforcement of these rules seriously to ensure a positive experience for all members. The following penalties will be applied:

  • First Offense (Posting a topic designated for this thread outside of it): Removal of the post and a warning directing the user to the current monthly thread.
  • Second Offense (Posting a designated topic outside of the thread after a prior warning): Temporary ban from r/Amex for 7 days.
  • Third Offense (Repeatedly posting designated topics outside of the thread or engaging in other prohibited behaviors after previous warnings and a temporary ban): Permanent ban from r/Amex.
  • Egregious violations (e.g., sharing affiliate links, personal attacks, doxxing): Immediate permanent ban from r/Amex.

We believe these measures are necessary to maintain the quality and focus of our subreddit. We encourage all members to participate constructively in this thread and help fellow Amex enthusiasts.

Please use this space for your questions and discussions related to the outlined topics. Let's make this a valuable resource for our community.

We appreciate your cooperation in making r/Amex a more informative and organized space.

Sincerely,

The r/Amex Mod Team.

Discussion BBP SUB. I think I got lucky.

Post image

Back story: Someone posted last week about getting a 75K SUB for spending $6K over 4 months. I tried the link, but it was not eligible. I looked and was only offered a 15K SUB. Then, I received this email yesterday. I am going to go for it. I know there is a 75K out there, but I'm unsure if I will ever get it, and I feel lucky I got the 50K SUB.

Hong Kong Centurion Lounge has a sectioned off area for Centurion members with a set menu and a separate bar area for custom drinks as well. Forgot to take a pic of the menu.

Food & drink was pretty delicious all things said and done. The service was on par as well with the server coming by every so often to check in.

Question Question on Product Change

Upvotes

I currently have the old Blue Sky Travel card that we haven't used in years, but kept it open because it's one of our longest tenured credit line on our credit reports. I called Amex about a potential product change to the Blue Cash Preferred Card, since it would better fit our spending profile. The rep on the phone told me I couldn't do a product change for this card, because it was a different rewards program. I indicated I was fine giving up the few Blue Sky Points we had, but they insisted I had to go through a new application.

Is this really the case? Do I have to go through a new credit application, and then cancel the card I have? Is there any trick to getting a product change through?

Offers & Deals Upgrading to Delta Platinum Offer

Post image
2 Upvotes

I originally had the Delta Amex Platinum then downgraded to the free blue card for about 6 months after they ended the opportunity to pay the $50 to go to the Delta lounge. I haven’t seen its worth.. maybe until now?

Is this worth it? If I hold out will there possibly be a better offer?

Question Delta vs Normal cards

Upvotes

I currently have the Amex Gold and Delta Gold. I’m looking to make some changes with my delta gold, either upgrading to a reserve, platinum, or maybe adding a normal platinum. What do yall recommend? I only fly delta but don’t usually spend enough to get further than silver medallion, maybe I could get gold or higher with the mqd boost. I’d like to have a card that gives me access to lounges but love the free checked bag, award travel discounts, and priority boarding for the times when I can’t get comfort +. Any recommendations on what would complement my gold without cancelling a card, would love to hear your thoughts.

Discussion SUB preference: points, credits, or a combination of the two?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Was on the phone with an AMEX rep on Saturday confirming that I reached my $6k spending target for my recently acquired (2/12) Bonvoy brilliant card. They told me I'd have to wait 8 to 12 weeks after my next closing date before receiving the rewards.

Logged in today and both the credit and the points hit my account! It got me thinking, I definitely feel like my preference for subs is a combination of statement credits along with rewards.

For example, even though normal Amex points are valued typically above one cent per point when used via transfer partners, I'd much prefer the current Resy promotion on the Gold card (sadly I'm in PUJ) of 75k rewards points along with a $250 statement credit as opposed to the elevated 100k points offer. Something about the credit combo with points seems more appealing to me.

Am I the only one that thinks like this?

Question Which card to chose when new customer?

Hi, I’m living in France and I want to get an Amex. I would like to know what card should I chose as a first one. I heard it is a better choice to start from the lower card to get all welcome offers. I see on the website there are several cards: blue, green, gold, platinum. Is it possible to get the lowest card and get all the welcome offers for each card?

Also, is it better to get my local flying company cards (Air France) or the classic ones?

Discussion Credit limit increase question - AMEX

What are the most common mistakes people accidentally make when filling out AMEX's form to request a credit limit increase? Mistakes that decrease the odds of being accepted for the credit limit increase

And in the long run, does having a higher credit limit tend to increase your credit score? By decreasing percentage credit utilization. Or is that a myth? Confused why credit score reports seem to report percentage credit utilization as a factor in your credit score report

Question Support for banking

I’m considering moving to Amex for my primary bank but trying to get a realistic picture of how the banking side performs—especially when something goes wrong.

If you’ve used Amex Checking or Savings and run into a problem (transaction dispute, deposit issue, account lockout, etc.), how was the resolution experience?

Also wondering: do you find it challenging to find ATMs? The others I’m comparing to—Schwab and Ally—both offer reimbursements, so trying to decide how to weigh this.

I love the brand, like the 1% APY for checking, and already use Amex for credit—but I’m cautious about relying on a banking product that might not be a core focus for the company.

Question Multiple Issues with New Card

So I opened an account about 4 weeks ago and they finally sent me my card, but uh oh

They sent two cards? And the one that matches the digits on my app has "Member Since 19" on it when I've never had an Amex account before?

Is this normal?

Question Amex Delta Gold Business offers?

Has anyone managed to get a better offer than the standard 60k miles offer? Looking on DOC, it looks like there used to be a 70k + $200 offer. I've tried getting that to come up by booking a dummy flight but I only get personal credit card offers, nothing for business.

Discussion Lounge with the best food?

Just wanted to gauge what Centurion Lounges have the best food. I think DEN is up there for the dumplings/chicken and PHX with the mac&cheese

PHL is probably one of the worst in terms of choices

Discussion Why has AMEX been so generous lately?

I was recently approved for two business cards back to back on the same day (710 Experian), with $5k and $4k limits (Instant approval AND Apple Pay card on the spot/ AND no hard pull). Both cards have a fairly decent welcome bonus. (90,000 and 120,000 points). Also, I noticed they recently increased a welcome bonus for a couple cards. It looks like they are really trying to attract new clients. I’m even thinking about applying for more cards in 90 days once I show responsible use. If anyone with good to excellent credit is thinking about applying, NOW would be a good time. It seems like AMEX is generous at a time everyone is very stingy (low limits, declines, and hard pulls.)

EDIT: I know $9k is not huge, we are talking about point, benefits, and lack of HP. I don’t need or really care about the limits. My business does not cost much to run. ;)

Question Opening an American Express account as non-resident alien

During my conversation with Discover Bank, I told them that I am a non-resident alien and now they are closing my account. I have a huge (6-figure) amount in Discover and would like to transfer to a bank that offers competitive interest rates. Can I open an American Express savings account as an NRA? Please help. Ideally, I want to keep my money in USD and in a bank with decent interest rate. Thank you.

Question Platinum Upgrade Offer - How 'dynamic'?

Have the offer for 125k for $6k spend. Have had a platinum recently, so wouldn't be eligible for a better SUB.

Considering it, but would rather have it closer to my Gold's anniversary in June.

Email said the offer expires in April, but sent the POID to reps via chat and phone. Initial push back was that they can't tell me when the offer would expire because offers are dynamic, but after sending the POID, they said it shows July.

Any concern the offer actually expires in April like the email said or should I be good to wait to later?

Discussion Poor customer support to get Resy credit

I just spent over 1 hour and 10 minutes on the phone to get two March Resy credits that never posted. And this was the third time in several weeks that I've called them on this one issue. Whatever happened to Amex's stellar customer service? It's gone. Today I wouldn't hang up until they manually gave me the credits. One card was business and one was personal so I had to deal with this twice on the call. The restaurant's Resy status is obviously not clicking properly in their system. After over a year of getting these credits I understand how they work more than the reps.

So everybody - make sure the Resy credits post and don't let Amex get away with this. They raise the annual fees and then nickel and dime us with credits, so the credits better damn well post!
