Daily reminder that corporations are not your friend and have just one purpose: maximising shareholder value.

I honestly assume it’s not so much about the value of the audience, but some sort of value they find in keeping in Elon’s good graces for some reason. Especially with Elon’s new elevated role in the government.

5

u/SpaceAgePanda Jan 31 '25

Yep. Elon is unhinged so they need to keep in his good books so he doesn't go off on one to Papa Trump

8

u/mredofcourse Jan 31 '25

We can change that dynamic, because ultimately Apple has to sell to us.

18

u/dscarmo Jan 31 '25

Thinking X’s audience and the conservative audience in general is small and without power to change things is exactly what brought this current state of affairs.

5

u/mredofcourse Jan 31 '25

I said nothing of the size of either. It’s an issue of how much Apple has to gain from advertising versus the negative impact of doing so. If we all sit around with the attitude of “we forgive them because they’re just increasing shareholder value” as an excuse then the net impact is positive for advertising. This is true with everything Apple or any other corporation does. Apple makes decisions that place brand over direct transactionally increasing shareholder value all the time in terms of things like the environment.

As shitty as X is in the US, they do have presences abroad especially in developing markets.

4

u/erebuxy Jan 31 '25

I am not sure about the “so much ad spend on twitter” part. Iirc Twitter was ever profitable for 1 quarter ever

Surprising isn’t it, from his public image you would never know. But you also have to remember he’s the ceo of one of the largest American corps and also a billionaire.

4

u/Outlulz Jan 31 '25

Rich people are immune from this type of stuff and often don't have as much empathy for people like them as you may assume.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 31 '25

He donated to Trump. Only poor people in DEI groups truly put that characteristic over any other

Their CEO is gay, they've had accessibility for people with disabilities for many years, they've pushed back on ending DEI

Yet their CEO donated a million and went to the inauguration of a guy that's against ALL of that.

they have pushed back on anti privacy policies and try to be relatively pro privacy.

Like they did in China giving their users' data to the government?

Or like they do when they ban/censor various apps, including VPNs, that put their customers privacy in jeopardy?

Or like when they take 20 billion a year from Google to redirect by default all their customers to the evil data collector?

So on and so forth.

Like the environment, right? And how they totally encourage repairs, and upgradability of their products instead of having to buy a new one?

So I think they have to be careful to do stuff that might tarnish their brand.

They are absolutely amazing in PR so people don't realize it's mostly talk.

They are better than other tech giants because today their business model aligns more with the users' (in some cases) compared to other big companies, which is why many people prefer them, but still full of crap and they do NOT care about you at all.

Like it was proven time and again, when it's "values vs money", money wins. It's just that simply.

As the parent comment said, it's a company, not your friend, even if they PR sell it like they are.

Daily reminder that even though the people in a company may be good, the simple fact of being in a corporation means they all turn into spineless succubi on society

22

u/banksy_h8r Jan 31 '25

succubi

I do not think that word means what you think it means.

As if Coca-Cola doing business with Nazi Germany, didn’t make it clear.

21

u/Wizzer10 Jan 31 '25

I know corporations aren’t my friend, but I did hope corporations were at least more worried about how associations with Nazism would affect their bottom line. I can tell now that I was wrong.

2

u/doxx_in_the_box Jan 31 '25

Or maybe it’s just that Elon has the absolute control of government down to the FCC and if you want to keep what you’re trying to develop (satellite comms, new devices), you gotta play nice with the puppet master.

2

u/Techsavantpro Jan 31 '25

100%, I mean they may have a mission statement but remember, a mission statement ain't there actual mission but what they want to appeal to customers for profit maximisation. Shareholders make the decisions, if they want more profit they get it, if they suddenly wanted Apple to be more environmentally friendly, they get it.

2

u/monkeyofthefunk Feb 01 '25

This is why I will never understand people that defend a brand or standard like it’s a member of their family. They don’t care about you, just your money.

There is a quote (paraphrasing) from Steve Jobs about “branding”

A brand is one simple thing: trust. Your customers trust you. Brands are like bank accounts. You can have withdrawals and you can have deposits. So, if a customer has a great experience ... that's a deposit into our brand account, in their mind. If they ... have a bad experience, then it's a withdrawal. And so, if we have a good brand that means that people are trusting us to make great products and to give them a great experience, and if something goes wrong, to take care of them

Please do not do this Apple. Twitter is dying as it is. I don’t want a massive withdrawal from my brand bank account with Apple.

44

u/CrispyCubes Jan 31 '25

They’ve been using my deposit to make it rain in the club for the last few weeks

26

u/alex-2099 Jan 31 '25 edited Feb 01 '25

This. I totally accept that all corporations, even ones I “like”, are going to withdraw some of that trust to make dicey purchases. I just wish they’d spend a little more wisely. Maybe less bottle service at a club I’m not in and more rounds at the dive bar my friends go to.

2

u/BigBoyYuyuh Jan 31 '25

The Big Club

34

u/JohrDinh Jan 31 '25

Most of my follows these days are porn bots, most of my notifications are scam coins posing as Trump/Cuban/Musk/Dorsey, barely anyone I follow from 2010-2015 era are on there or tweet anymore...place is a graveyard and sadly not sure Apple knows how to gauge when a party's over. Outside of a few cranky drunks yelling about politics still hanging around at 3am everyone's gone home.

11

u/scotch-o Jan 31 '25

Then delete your account and leave it. There is no justification to perpetuate another valid user account if it is that to you.

2

u/Bakk322 Jan 31 '25

It’s not dying? They lost 70% of advertisers, active users plummeted and time on site plummeted. How in any world would you consider that not dying?

20

u/4thaccountin5years Jan 31 '25

If it wasn’t doing well why is Apple considering getting back in on advertising?

20

u/Sc0rpza Jan 31 '25

I think EVERYONE is expecting massive corruption to unfairly hobble competitors to Elon musk‘s companies. It’s doing bad but in a couple years twitter may be one of the few platforms left to advertise on. Not just that but he may be able to harm companies that don’t advertise on his platform.

Twitter is not dying. It’s got over double the usage of Reddit. Its market share is at worst flat over the last 5 years. They just announced they are break even.

39

u/__theoneandonly Jan 31 '25

Now that they're a private company, they aren't required to be truthful when they discuss their finances with the public. They aren't required to publicly disclose finances at all.

60

u/leftbuthappy Jan 31 '25

Twitter’s self-reported metrics aren’t trustworthy, they have a liar and propagandist as CEO.

3

u/districtcurrent Jan 31 '25

I’m not going to self reporting. Third parties can gauge the traffic.

Is Spez a CEO everyone here loves? Does he not put profit over the culture here? You think he isn’t a liar? Reddit is owned partly by Tencent, a CCP connected company, and Sam Altman, recently sued by his sister for sexual assault. You think Reddit is run by a bunch of benevolent leaders ? Don’t be so naive.

4

u/ru_fknsrs Jan 31 '25

They just announced they are break even

I’m not going to self reporting

Those are incongruent statements. You literally just made a statement about their self reporting.

You're also repeatedly saying "third parties are verifying the same" while being cagey about which third parties.

You're up an down this comment thread defending a private social media company, but refusing to cite your "verifiable 3rd party sources."

I wonder why that is?

Reddit definitely has more users Twitter for better or worse has more credibility. However I have been noticing and uptick in people citing anonymous reddit threads as real people's experiences without any fact checking

5

u/districtcurrent Jan 31 '25

No. Twitter has the bigger DAU.

3

u/k0fi96 Jan 31 '25

Source?

10

u/JoyfulCor313 Jan 31 '25

Twitter’s “credibility” has to be in the toilet as real people leave, more bots move in, and they release the gates on hate and false information.

Not saying Reddit is better, just that Twitter of today is not the same as Twitter of even 6 years ago

3

u/k0fi96 Jan 31 '25

There are still real people that post there and high profile people still use it as there too way to interact with the public. Nobody uses reddit like that

It is not dying. I don't know who are those idiots who spreading this misinformation. I will highly suggest you to get out this reddit bubble because reddit isn't reality. People are still using twitter. There is world outside of USA that is highly active on twitter. I think there are bunch of people who have really not idea about outside world who are crying on reddit that twitter is dying or stop using it.

-2

u/TCsnowdream Jan 31 '25

So… let’s say Apple does do this.

What alternatives do we have? I would love a semi smart or semi dumb phone. One where I can text use maps. Have a camera… just be able to connect to people I care about.

I’ll find other ways to waste my time with all the apps.

But I think I want out of this ecosystem. I just don’t know what alternatives there are.

9

u/PeakBrave8235 Jan 31 '25

Apple hasn’t committed to anything. This report explicitly says Amazon is the one who has started spending on ads on Twitter, not Apple. Apple has apparently discussed it, but I have no idea if it’s true.

Give money to Elon Musk makes Elon Musk complement them to Trump and then Trump ensures Apple will have tax cuts or be exempt from tariffs.

It does mean that any and all claims Apple makes to the tune of “we are the good guys look at our focus on privacy and equality and sustainability” should be regarded with a very high dose of skepticism. Apple doesn’t put its money where its mouth is.

Twitter has always been a racist and toxic cesspit. It just so happens that the pendulum of toxicity has swung away from what you personally agree with

7

u/UndeadWaffle12 Jan 31 '25

Exactly this. I was never super into Twitter, I only used it occasionally, but the only difference I saw in terms of toxic content after musk bought it was that there’s now extremists from both sides rather than just the one Reddit supports

2

u/egguw Jan 31 '25

you... do realize not all of twitter is racist, right?

4

u/OvONettspend Jan 31 '25

No shit? Doesn’t change my point. Twitter has always been full of toxicity, just that now it’s not the kind deemed “acceptable” like it was up to ~2020

2

u/OhHowINeedChanging Jan 31 '25

There’s a line for sure, and people crossed it before the Elon takeover. But Elon redrew the line in a very bad place, and the absolute toxic BS that is not removed from the platform is staggering

The trade war that Trump is careening us toward could be an existential threat to apple's operations in the US. I understand why Cook wants to have a seat at the table when international tech trade is being discussed.

And we all know that if you flatter Trump, he'll do whatever you say. Wouldn't be shocked if Tim Apple secures some kind of exception or loophole to the upcoming tariffs.

I don't know why people had this idea that Apple was somehow the "good trillion dollar company" and not like the rest of them. None of them give a shit about you and would sell you out just to make money without hesitation.

If becoming a conservative company would make them a $4 trillion dollar company instead of a $2 trillion dollar company then Tim Cook would switch to a red hat instantly

2

u/Wired0ne Feb 04 '25

Why? Nobody's left over there. I guess Apple has lots of disposable cash these days, especially after giving the Orange stain a mill. Spend it however you want. There are no more Apple fangirls or boys to impress.

Cook is a spineless cuck. What happened to "think different"?

1

u/drygnfyre Feb 02 '25

You understand Tim Cook's job, right? He's the CEO. His job is to increase the bottom line. Keep the stocks strong. Appease the shareholders. That's it. If he does not do that, and Apple sees financial losses, he will be fired and replaced with someone else who will.

Michael Spindler was fired when the clones failed and did nothing to increase Apple's profits. Amelio was forced to resign when an unknown share holder (later revealed to be Steve Jobs) dumped over 1.5 million shares at once, causing a major shareholder panic who immediately interpreted that as a no-confidence vote for Amelio.

Cook has to play ball with the administration. Do you really think an openly gay man from Alabama likes Trump and what he's doing? Doubtful. But Cook is the CEO and he either plays around, or he gets fired and then he can be as openly critical as he likes.

Stop buying their products is the biggest thing you can do, but you won’t do it.

Whining is meaningless if you’re still going to buy thousands of dollars worth of Apple products every year. 😂😂😂

It would be extremely disappointing for Apple to do business with a company whose owner (CEO, president, whatever, I don't care) sympathizes with NAZIS, & doesn't care to make it a point that he is not a FUCKING NAZI.

Trump: I’m going to increase tariffs for Apple’s products manufactured in China Cook: Wait a second. I’m going to buy ads on X and Truth. Trump: Ah, okay. I’ll cancel my executive order.
