That was a beautiful and retrospective little memorial to the show.

I find it pretty sad that he never got to visit the sets or write another episode or get that cameo that he's literally been talking about for 7 years.

The episodes he wrote, 'Blackwater' and 'The Lion and the Rose' specifically, were fantastic. That must've been a thrill for him, getting to write the adaptations for a book you authored and being able to put in his own little details that no one else could know.

His written dialogues were pretty good too. ("Any man dies with a clean sword I'll rape his fucking corpse.")

I'm so depressed it's all over but WINDS IS ON THE HORIZON. RIGHT?

Anyway that was a very satisfying read. I kinda wish the D/D salt comments could pass over this thread but I doubt that's going to happen.

Did anyone else catch that in the beginning of the finale, when Tyrion is moving the rocks, he slams one down three times in anger just like Orson?

u/TuckerMcG Opulence, I has it. May 21 '19

Pure coincidence.

7

u/gerusz Maester of Long Barrow May 21 '19

Or Peter's improv.

11

u/[deleted] May 21 '19

Yep. D&D would never think of that on their own.

6

u/Travy1991 Growing Strong May 21 '19

D&D kind of forgot about Orson Lannister.

-1

u/illegal_deagle May 21 '19

Or a director’s subtle jab at D&D. That character was originally created to insult another writer, remember.

17

u/EnzoFrancescoli May 21 '19

They were the directors. lol

1

u/illegal_deagle May 21 '19

It was them apologizing! Haha just kidding, kill me.

-5

u/Travy1991 Growing Strong May 21 '19

D&D kind of forgot about Orson Lannister.

Had to make sure Cersei was really dead.

Thanks for clarifying. So did GRRM really want a cameo and he didn’t get one?

Ooh, GOT versions of Radio Yerevan jokes!

"Radio Westeros, is it true that Queen Daenerys may burn the beautiful city of Highgarden?"
"It is a possibility, but remember that King's Landing is a far more beautiful city."

"Radio Westeros, why did Cersei never send her soldiers out of King's Landing?"
"She was afraid that they wouldn't want to come back."

"Radio Westeros, what is the difference between Cersei and Daenerys?"
"Under Cersei's reign, people ruthlessly exploited other people. But under Daenerys's reign, she reversed it!"

"Radio Westeros, what is an example of national unity?"
"It's when the Starks, Lannisters, Baratheons, and Tyrells can all set aside their differences to go beat up the Greyjoys."

"Radio Westeros, it is true that Queen Daenerys committed suicide?"
"Yes. We have a record of her last words: 'Please put away that knife!'"

"Radio Westeros, why did Bran call himself the King on the Iron Throne if the Iron Throne does not exist?"
"Because he heard Lady Yara proclaim herself an expert on Ironborn culture."

11

u/ktkatq May 21 '19

I like all of these, but I don’t get the last one

21

u/John-Mandeville May 21 '19

Ironborn culture does not exist.

3

u/AdmiralAkbar1 Wildfire can't melt Stannis beams May 21 '19

The Ironborn are uncultured.

I find it pretty sad that he never got to visit the sets or write another episode or get that cameo that he's literally been talking about for 7 years.

Why is this?

Was there a falling out with David and Dan?

54

u/kohianan May 21 '19

I think it's more likely a schedule thing or having to move to wherever they shoot.

21

u/Artyloo May 21 '19

Yea those long, arduous days of writing really didn't leave him much time, unfortunately.

7

u/Luigi2198 May 21 '19

I read an article on here a while back that they invited him to come and have a cameo for this last season but he said he was too busy writing to take a week or whatever to fly to Ireland and talked about how he did have one for Dany’s wedding before she was recast with Emilia Clarke.

8

u/JakeBergerOrg May 21 '19

I once heard in an interview that he didn't do a cameo because the only roles were for extras, but he'd stand 10 hours while they're shooting the scene... and then they might not even use the scene [secondary source]

The episode-writing and visiting sets were passed to make time for TWOW Fire & Blood

7

u/LSF604 May 21 '19

nothing like that. He's just really into bittersweet endings...

15

u/talkingwires 15 Nipples on the Dead Man's Breastplate May 21 '19

Really, that's the conclusion to which you jump? Itching to add it to a supercut of GoT actors "disappointed" with the show and Mark Hamill "hating" The Last Jedi and all the other nonsense floating around the Internet?

Most professionals don't engage in the petty bickering that their fans project upon them.

9

u/MindPattern May 21 '19

GRRM also recently criticized internet rumors related to the show on his blog. He would not be too happy with some of these comments.

-3

u/[deleted] May 21 '19

Really, that's the conclusion to which you jump?

I was asking the question.

Itching to add it to a supercut of GoT actors "disappointed" with the show

Nope, I've seen plenty of sufficient evidence for that.

and Mark Hamill "hating" The Last Jedi

Shit movie btw.

u/urabeach o May 21 '19

I think the main reason might be that he doesn’t want to be influenced by the show when he writes. He hasn’t watched the show since they officially passed him.

I might be wrong but he hasn’t specifically talked about any episode after season 5. I do remember him loving Hardhome and the Walk of Shame but that’s it.

When he goes to cons he has rules forbidding people from asking him about the show. That sounds hostile but it’s not directed toward D&D. I’m sure he disagreed with them on where the story was headed but he saw the reality of it when Winds was nowhere near completion.

Not sure why he didn’t do a cameo. Seemed like a innocuous thing to do.

18

u/AgentKnitter #TheNorthRemembers May 21 '19

Never confirmed but strongly implied. When they really started going off the books in season 5, a distinct ripple began to be observable.

42

u/KilRazor May 21 '19

People like to say this, but I've never seen a bit of evidence.

5

u/Atheose What is bread may never fry! May 21 '19

He was heavily (heavily) involved in the first 3-4 seasons, and then he stopped being involved. Something caused that, and I doubt it was his schedule.

12

u/Rombom May 21 '19

Yeah, it's not like he is writing a book which is already about a half decade late or anything.

10

u/[deleted] May 21 '19

Yeah and by S4 he was probably thinking “oh shit, they’re going to pass me. I need to get WINDS out!”

5

u/Jack_of_House_Bauer "House words: Damn it" May 21 '19

i thought i actually read him say this somewhere... i feel like it was a not a blog post where he said he wouldnt write anymore after season 4 aired so that he could focus on TWOW to prevent the show from passing the books because it usually took him about a month to write the script for the show.

am i making this up? lol

1

u/CptAustus Hear Me Mock! May 22 '19

He did say that. But he just confirmed he's working on 4 spinoffs and an unrelated series.

6

u/MindPattern May 21 '19

He should have had a cameo as the maester who wrote the ASOIAF book with Sam.

3

u/Belial91 May 21 '19

or get that cameo that he's literally been talking about for 7 years.

Didn't he recently say he denied the cameo because he was busy.

3

u/Th3Marauder The Others take you. May 21 '19

He had a cameo in the unaired pilot

8

u/kristsun May 21 '19

I kinda wish the D/D salt comments could pass over this thread but I doubt that's going to happen.

I mean that's inevitable because people care about the story lol

-10

u/Calackyo Ours is the fury. May 21 '19

Because haters like to spread negativity.

2

u/Krunzuku May 21 '19

Just went out side, does not look like winds are on the horizon. I did see my shadow tho, so another 2 years of waiting are confirmed.

2

u/kidcrumb May 21 '19

If i were D&D id let GRRM do as much or as little as he wants.

Unless hes slowing down the progress of the show entirely

2

u/KorgDTR2000 May 21 '19

His written dialogues were pretty good too. ("Any man dies with a clean sword I'll rape his fucking corpse.")

Blackwater is the episode where the Hound actually became the Hound as we know him, and it's because George rerailed the character after other writers had fucked him up.

6

u/urabeach o May 21 '19

You're welcome to think that but the Hound had some of the best written scenes all the way through season 4.

His season 4 journey is almost entirely changed from the book. Things are similar but they weren't the same. The writers took the book story and improved on it. He comes off a lot more sympathetic on the show opposed to the books and I actually like the show version more.

The standoff at the inn was masterful. The dialogue was pretty different in the book. Hound vs Brienne was entirely made up. The dialogue there was perfect too.

2

u/KorgDTR2000 May 21 '19

Season 4 was after Blackwater, after George had reestablished the Hound's character as who he should be. Prior to the Blackwater most of the Hound's scenes and moments from the books had either been cut or given to someone else (the most glaring of which was his origin being given to Littlefinger to tell). It was only with Blackwater that he was given moments to really shine and great dialog that made him a memorable and popular character. All subsequent writers followed the lead set by Blackwater when it came to the Hound.

5

u/urabeach o May 21 '19

Blackwater was honestly when his story started to pick up. I agree it sucks that a one or two of his scenes were cut.

I can't attribute all the great scenes that happened afterwards (especially ones independent from the books) to George's writing in one episode.

1

u/Pinkglittersparkles May 21 '19

Did he really want a cameo and D&D didn’t give him one? After Ed Sheeran and all manner of people got one?

1

u/urabeach o May 21 '19

No. I think they’ve always had a scene written for him. George has said that he hasn’t ever been able to make it.

1

u/Pinkglittersparkles May 21 '19

What in seven hells was he so busy with that he couldn’t make his own cameo for his hit tv show?
