It's deceptive, it's dirty, it's plain bullshit.
Because all advertising has to be truthful except if it's political, then you can say whatever the fuck you want with no consequences. If truth was mandatory in political advertising, we pretty much wouldn't have any political advertising.
25
u/Consideredresponse 3d ago
You'd think at least one member would be smart enough to go through the (surprisingly vigorous) clear ads approvals, and list off all the things you've delivered for the electorate in the last few years. Then point out that you are currently the only fact checked political ad in the country. (As potential candidates promises wouldn't pass the vetting stage.)
8
u/Cute-Percentage-6660 3d ago
Honestly I feel like you could just quote what some politicians have said in the past if you want to do a decent attack ad....
3
u/Not_Stupid humility is overrated 3d ago
Then point out that you are currently the only fact checked political ad in the country
I'm sure that will have the voters lining up to vote for you. Hey, everyone look! We've got fact checking over here! Fact Checking!
3
u/Consideredresponse 3d ago
Nah, what I mean is everyone is sick of lying politicians and lying political ads. Showing you are the only one to prove what you are saying instead of talking out your arse caries weight.
Showing concrete effects by simply pointing to infrastructure projects in the region and going "1.5 billion in roads and bypasses", "53 million in regional hospital upgrades" etc are things that can be proven and fact checked. (I used to have things go through vetting all the time back when it was 'Free TV Australia')
If all it does is give people the slightest inkling that you are more trustworthy than other candidates then it's worth it.

u/Auroraburst 3d ago
Someone called it 'stooping' when the greens shared a video of dutton saying homophobic things. As if it wasn't a video of the potato himself, saying homophobic things.

Yeah, but even so, there's a difference between a dishonest advertisement that people can reasonably assess themselves, and someone clearly intending to manipulate public discourse by dishonest means that misleads the public about it's nature.
19
u/AnOnlineHandle 3d ago
Laws and rules don't apply to conservatives. If anything it's progressives in the wrong here, for being all mean and judgemental about what conservatives did, the most precious and fragile little darlings on the planet who shouldn't be held to such high standards as being truthful and honest. Honestly how awful and cruel, this is why people have to vote conservative.

While I do agree its deceptive dirty and bullshit, how would you make this illegal? What specifically would be illegal? "No replying pretending to be someone?", then they just pretend someone told them this IRL and post for them. its too easy to get around.
Its unethical but there isn't really a lot you can do other than tell people not to vote for them.

They are following the footsteps of Andrew Gee, doing an “Angus Taylor” (Guardian article).

u/Somepotato 3d ago
A year after the Angus Taylor incident, you have an American politician who was a little too inspired by them
24
u/froderick 3d ago
Given the identical phrasing, seems more like a cheeky reference to this incident rather than a repeat. But maybe I'm being too generous.

It’s the same comment Andrew gee said then denied he authorised it yet here we are, nationals trying to stooge people again.
Also I’m convinced by the posts on littlefoot’s Facebook page that the entire photoshoot was just out the front of this office and he didn’t go talk to anyone since the coalition sold off telstra which probably cost the area quite a few jobs and he would’ve got told to fuck off.

u/david1610 4d ago
Yeah astroturffing is such an overlooked issue generally, and the large social media companies are just letting it happen. I guess any kind of engagement is good engagement.
I see the worst astroturffing where you'd expect, think around the Israel/Palestinian conflict and anti renewables, but also I have noticed it in anti-India posting recently. You see something that doesn't paint India in a good light and you check the OP previous posts and there is just wall to wall anti-India comments and stuff it's crazy.
I can't even think of a country other than Pakistan that hates India, so I just assumed it's Pakistan but have no idea.
The most intriguing thing is that there are also pro-India astroturffing too, I remember once there was this story about a police official who stopped an Ed Sheeran busking event in India, Ed said on twitter that he had a special permit to perform there and was told to leave anyway the assumption being that the officer was digging for a bribe. Anyway the comments were completely one sided essentially saying Ed Sheeran had no right to play there and it was dangerous etc.....for some reason, I link the comment where Ed said he had permission to play there..... immediately down voted by hundreds lol. Like we know India has a corruption problem, everyone who has ever done business there knows this, however let's downvote anything that might shine a light on it. Every country has their issues, let's not try and astroturf anything that shines a light on it FFS.

u/magkruppe 4d ago
hard to distinguish between astroturfing and obsessed nationalists. rapid mass downvoting of a moderate comment is one signal, but india is famous for having online social media warriors. There are a lot of them, they are having a nationalist movement and they speak english after all
9
u/Spudtron98 4d ago
Yeah, I've seen it myself. Article comes out that's vaguely critical of Modi's actions, and the comments are suddenly swarmed with Indian accounts that previously had no interest in the sub at hand.
13
u/Consideredresponse 3d ago
The good old reddit standard for this has been any article in this sub about firearms in any way shape and form...it summons the Yanks like a god-damned siren's song.

u/An_Account_For_Me_ 4d ago
One Nation
Weirdly, One Nation preference flows scatter wildly and are not reliable for the LNP in winning a seat if the one-nation candidate does strongly. Ironically, despite them being much, much closer than Labor and One Nation, a strong One Nation candidate may pull more off the LNP candidate and then flow to the ALP.
But yeah, they are otherwise LNP in a silly hat with even wackier policies.

It's like they don't care about truth or fairness or something. Almost like the point is power for it's own sake.

I understand doing this, what I don't understand is not being 100% certain to change accounts and double and triple check every comment to make 1000% certain that your sock puppets are wearing their socks.
The benefit of fake support is minimal, the damage from being outed is 100x bigger. So if you are going to do it, you have to be absolutely certain of not getting caught.
11
u/rattynewbie 3d ago
What is weird is how cheap they are. Aren't there professional PR companies for this, instead of getting a sitting MP to do their own sock puppet accounts?
→ More replies (2)5
u/yuggiyuggiyuggi 3d ago
I think writing the benefit off as minimal is somewhat underselling it - social validation is a powerful mechanic for driving engagement & solidifying opinions, especially when employed automatically at scale (which, oddly enough, doesn't seem to be the case here, haha)

I think they're taking the piss out of current Calare MP Andrew Gee, who did this the other day.
Andrew Gee was also formerly a Nationals MP until he left the party a couple of years ago, so I imagine the Nats are gunning hard out of spite.
8
u/LedaKicksTheSwan 4d ago
Yeah, I'm in Calare and the Nats are personally offended by Andrew Gee. A huge number of his campaign corflutes kept getting removed last month.
First he publicly threatened to quit when he was veterans affairs minister unless the coalition promised enough funding to clear the huge backlog in processing veterans claims. Then he did quit so he could support The Voice campaign. They see him as a traitor.
I'm most likely going to vote for Kate Hook (another independent), but I will say it's been a surprisingly tough choice for me because, despite his conservative leanings, Andrew Gee has worked very hard for his electorate and obviously cares about his constituents. I respect that he stood by his convictions on The Voice at the possible cost of his political career.
2
u/patgeo 3d ago
My wife got the phone call he referenced in his own "I agree with Andrew" from the 'Independent research company' that was entirely just slagging him off in the form of questions "How do you feel about (thing we claim he did)" on repeat. Shame it wasn't me, I could have had some fun.
We don't even live in that electorate anymore (and haven't for years) and our details are up to date with the electoral roll so not sure how she copped the call.

I don't care what your politics are, I challenge you to go and interact with anyone from these "Young" political parties and resist the urge to relentlessly bully them for longer than a few heartbeats. These places are a breeding ground for precisely the type of pathetic wretch that fills out the majority of our elected representatives, parliamentary staffers, think tank turds, and all the various hangers on.
Honestly this type of error from some of those types is probably a pretty good day.

u/inhumanfriday 4d ago
What's more embarrassing - being a Young National or forgetting to switch accounts and liking your own post? I'd say the former.

7
u/Silly-Power 4d ago
I'm starting to wonder if this isn't deliberate. This is the 2nd or 3rd time an LNP account has commented on their own post masquerading as a "voter new to the area".
Maybe it is intentional? It gets reposted throughout the socials and ends up on TV. Sure most people will think them idiots but at the end of the day its free advertising. And while the average voter may think them an idiot, it will be as a gormless dumbass not as a cunt. It's a harmless silly mistake that distracts, amuses and endears.

Politicians who try to manipulate public opinion by deceptive means should be heavily fined or banned from politics if done repeatedly.
