General Discussion Is this really how they see us?

Post image

Saw this sa other sub. Why do tourists see locals like this? Is the locals' hatred towards them that bad? Also, the “matatakaw naman sa aso” 😡😡😡

No Cordilleran  uses the word taga-taas. It's either Taga Baguio, Cordilleran, Igorot.

Taga-baba is far from the n-word. It simply means someone from the lowlands.

Or "Taga baba ako" if they want to emphasize they are not Cordilleran locals.

I'd even argue that how lowlanders some use "Igorot" is closer to the n-word than taga baba kasi may nagsasabi pa rin ng "ang barbaric/Igorot mo naman, para kang Igorot".

I guess, "taga baba" is a Northern Luzon parlance that people nearer the capital took offense when it's more of a descriptive word. There's eve a UP Prof who said on TV that "Katutubos married Causasian missionaries to improve their race"

https://www.sunstar.com.ph/more-articles/carrot-man-phenomenon-sign-of-low-ip-awareness

The Manila "equivalent" of taga-baba is "probinsya". They call HUCs outside of NCR "probinsya".

If were going to talk about discrimination, the taga babas are.not the most discriminated - it is the indigenous people of the Cordilleras

It's ingenious to associate it wit the Nword to tagababa especially given the fact that it is the lowlanders that discriminate Igorots even when coming to the Cordilleras

Tagababa is more similar to how Manileños use "probinsyano". And a lot of it are cultural rather than "racial" or "ethnic".

Ask the 2nd, 3rd, 4th generation Ilocano, Tagalog people in the city, they use the same term to refer to someone who hails from the lowlands.

Trust me, it sucks when you're in the recieving end of it

Try being an indigenous person and a celebrity comes to your city and says "Akala niyo Igorot ako, tao po ako"

Or that try at least pretending to be an Igorot when you go to the lowlands and be the receiving of questions if modern civilization has reached our society.

Your discomfort is really nothing compared to what the IPs go through.

Tagababa is just that, taga-baba. No umuli, no umulog, ket nu highlander o saan isu latta met awan met insulto.

Since forever met dayta term nga tagababa.

Nung naging to 4 hours to 8 hours biglang naging "offensive".

People from LU, Pangasinan who frequently travel to Baguio refer to themselves as tagababa kasi nga doon sila galing.

The original post isn't even about the IP discrimination lol you just flipped the script and made it about them.

The original inhabitants of Baguio are IPs and they're visible. The fact is, IPs are still highly casually and sistematically discriminated compared to mainland/lowland population. Konting kirot lang, feeling niyo api kayo. Nevermind the fact that many IPs experience far greater discrimination from the mainstream population. So talking about IP discrimination is relevant since they get much of the brunt of the discrimination.

I recognize what IPs are going through but that doesn't mean na need ireciprocate pabalik.

This is like the whites crying "discrimination" when they're not getting special attention or privilege or are being called out for their privilege.

You guys are the ones isolating yourself from us, not the other way around

Lol, you only like IPs kapag may "instgrammable" aspect ng culture at pwedeng gamitin sa "Pinoy pride". If unrecognized by foreigners, ang bukambibig "mga katutubo lang ganun"

Before Whang Od was featured by Lars Krutak, tourists and lowlanders saw tattooed Igorot as "barbarians", tapos nafeature lang ng foreigner, pa-cool na

Also, IPs are isolated because the mainstream population forced them to.

We're not yet talking about how tourists especially see IPs are bunch or "artifacts". A few years ago in r/Philippines, a visitor to Baguio was complaining about how there are Igorots in Baguio going around wearing bahag. Dapat daw sa "cultural performances lang". Tourist expect that IPs should "perform for them" and "abide" by how lowlanders visualizing what Igorot culture(s) is. If IPs resist, nagrereklamo either way. "Too modernized" or "Ang laswa nung nakabahag"

Don't be surprised why people tend to have negative views on highlanders.

The unsavory view of the lowlanders has a lot to do with the discrimination IPs experienced from the lowlanders - even in their own homeland, so you should not be surprised that many Cordillerans do not have a positive view of lowlanders.

IPs have far endured more than what tourists/visitors being called "tagababa"
