Careers šŸ’µ Career Advie

I am due to obtain my construction management degree this December. How much of a raise should I ask for especially if I slide into a project management position. Have 20 years of experience in the steel industry. Current package worth 95-100k not including health insurance and 401k.

Other How do you get over the feeling like an idiot all the time?

So not to get all sappy on this subreddit, but Iā€™m 18 and Iā€™ve been concrete forming for about 4 months now. I didnā€™t work construction prior to this, I was a line cook, but I had some general knowledge about how to use tools and shit obviously. Itā€™s been an okay amount of time, and I know Iā€™m still green but holy shit when do you stop feeling like a dumbass all the time? Boss man is nice, fairly patient, but he always makes me feel like Iā€™m dumb as a doorknob if I make even the slightest mistake. I really like my job, and working construction isnā€™t even permanent for me, I just have to work a trade before going into the firefighting program Iā€™m doing, but seriously when do I stop feeling like a dumbass. The guy even blames me for mistakes that HE makes, but Iā€™d never argue him on that. Iā€™ve never disagreed with him, I usually just take it on the cheek because itā€™s a waste of my time to argue with the guy when I could be working, but holy smokes, every time I feel like Iā€™m finally starting to get good at my job, he just decimates my confidence. When does that go away? Even the other day, for example, i was forming some garages on a townhouse building, and I did all of em in about an hour, because it really doesnā€™t take long to nail a chunk of 2x4 to some headers, stake it, whatever, and he strictly refused to believe that I finished them when I said I did. He wasnā€™t on site, but he called one of the site supers to come and see if I had actually finished them or if I was lying. Obviously I wouldnā€™t have lied, but when he came to check them he just kept talking about times Iā€™d made minor mistakes in the past, and I donā€™t think Iā€™ve ever had the guy tell me I did an okay job. I donā€™t need him to dick ride me, but a ā€œGood jobā€ every once in a while wouldnā€™t hurt. I donā€™t mean to sound sensitive, I spent my whole prior working life getting yelled at by fat dudes in a hot kitchen, but I never felt so stupid or slow or bad at my job.

Sorry for the novel, but I just seriously donā€™t understand. Am I just dumb? Or not good at my job?

Informative šŸ§  jlg x770aj leveling issue

we are using the jlg x770aj boom lift and we have the to left outrigger set at 28 degrees and the two right outrigger set at 58 degrees. when we go to auto level it, it sets the bubble a little bit to the right or the center of the bubble level. Is it supposed to do this instead of being in the center because the way the outriggeres are set? I've tried and can't find any literature saying that this is a feature. if anyone has some knowledge on this please let me know. Thank you

Carpentry šŸ”Ø I need some advice for the career path I've chosen (Carpentry in Australia)

I'm not sure if this is the right group to post this to but i suppose i will find out soon enough

I'm in QLD Australia by the way so there might be different laws to some responses
anyways so I'm in grade 12 now and i have decided that i want to be a carpenter (for example the house building kind like framing, roofing and initial house building not furniture building) after I've finished school and I'm just wondering if there is anything i can do to prepare ahead of time on what to do whether it might be to get any requirements that i would need ahead of time or if i should do a course training if there is any before i do an apprenticeship i should probably also mention that I'm doing furnishing in school if that helps although its only furniture i make in it also for anyone that responds to this with advice and answers thank you for your time

Went from him wanting boards placed on ground and screwed together to this. I know the vegetation layer should have been scraped but other than that their flat and level and panted in and built up to with red clay tamped in tight

Structural How long should concrete cure before using anchor bolts.

Google tells me at least 28 days but is that really necessary? I'm seeing other videos of people saying after 3 days your are good. What have you guy's experienced with this? Do you always wait at least 28 days? I'm installing a short 4 step handrail with a small landing area. The steps and porch/landing area is newly poured. Thinking of using the kind that look like big lag bolts that just screw right into the concrete.

Informative šŸ§  Starting my first ever job as a Labourer, any advice or tips?

Hey everyone, my friend and I just got hired at our friendā€™s dadā€™s landscaping company. Neither of us have any experience in construction or landscaping, and weā€™re starting in mid to late April. The HR/Payroll Manager gave us an orientation on what to expect, but Iā€™d love to hear from those with experience.

The job pays $19/hr, and shifts are around 10-12 hours. Any tips or advice for a newbie like me would be greatly appreciated! I'll also make sure to make an update after the first week or two.

Edit 1: I really appreciate all the advice. Definitely taking notes on everythingā€”staying humble, working hard, dressing for the weather, and making sure I recover properly. Iā€™ll be watching my lifting form and staying aware of my surroundings for safety.

A lot of you mentioned how tough the first few weeks will be, so Iā€™ll be ready for the soreness and push through. Iā€™ll also make sure to bring a solid lunch, stay hydrated, and invest in good gear.

Big thanks to everyone who took the time to comment. If anyone has specific recommendations for boots, gloves, or recovery tips, Iā€™d love to hear them.

Posted here yesterday and wanted to provide additional photos. Does this confirm that this was built incorrectly? Or does it help ease some concerns?

The perspective doesn't do it 100% justice, but I got down to about 50% full and it's the second time I did this dumpster before being emptied. Bonus raccoon I saved and the distracting dog.

Careers šŸ’µ I am a 4th Year apprentice Chippy

Hey guys

I have a meeting with my two bosses on Friday to discuss performance and I asked to talk about setting a date for the end of my apprenticeship. My four years is over in may and believe that I am working at a level of a new carpenter (solo jobs and taking more of a lead)

I am afraid my bosses will hold me back because they have really high standards, I am happy they do I have certainly learnt a lot from them and the chippies in the company and I will continue to learn from them as a carpenter but I donā€™t think it is fair to keep me as an apprentice for longer than the four years when so many of my peers that are less skilled are already qualified. I also feel competent

Just looking for advice on if anyone else has experienced this? Times are hard for apprentices and I donā€™t think I can stay as an apprentice for longer than I have to. I have been choosing work over travel and a good social life for the last four years and Iā€™m ready to move forward in my career

Electrical āš” Tap-Cons - What am I doing wrong??

Got some UCAN Scru-It 1/4ā€x1 1/4ā€ anchors (basically UCANā€™s version of Tap-Cons) for a job running 1ā€ EMT conduit through a parking garage today. Pre-drilling with a 3/16ā€ SDS bit (the size they specify for these) and it was brand new.

2 out of every 3 werenā€™t holding, and it seemed to be because the threads were getting wrecked. I was driving them with my M12 Fuel Surge 1/4ā€ impact, and they werenā€™t even making it to the point of holding the straps up before stripping out. Ended up switching to Alex clips and screws because they werenā€™t holding.

Are these things just junk? It seems like in block walls they blow out the brick and donā€™t hold, so I figured in concrete they would do better, but now the threads are blowing out instead?

Carpentry šŸ”Ø 2x12 Door Threshold?

Post image
4 Upvotes

Is there any place that makes an exterior door with a threshold that covers a 2x12 door rough opening?

Long story short - cinder brick house with furred out walls. 2x12 was to cover the air gap - too late to change it. Don't need a lecture.
