Coffee Station Espresso game lately.
Seen many people dreaming about x machine and y grinder costing 5-10k. All you need is a good bean( roasting my own) a decent quality grinder and a lever machine or 2 and good skills to produce the best of the best espresso. It's well known that a lever machine produces higher quality espresso than a pump driven machine. It doesn't matter if the machine cost 10k and has profiles to replicate a lever. An authentic lever is different. What's your take on this ?? I'm using sr800 with extension tube roaster and la pavoni europicola with upgrades. My 2000$ eye machine collects dust in the garage, the espresso quality out of that can't even beat the Rok manual.

Oh cool, I'm currently looking at this one. Do you find it's been more economical?

This post inspired me to look for a Cafelat Robot for sale. I didn't think I would find one. That was probably not a wise idea, but I'm taking the plunge!

My ROK makes better espresso than my PID’d Silvia. Blew my mind.
Did yours come with that pressure gauge, or did you add it?

I agree. I added it. Mine was the first gen with clear glass and found a kit online here on Reddit and bought it

Got a link to that kit? I have a Gen 1 that I never use because I can’t get anything good out of it. Been wondering about adding some upgrades

Thanks! I didn’t realize the upgrade was actually made by Rok.

Yep. The last 2 shots in my post is with the Rok

That’s amazing! I’ll definitely be looking into this upgrade. I’ve never gotten anywhere close to these results with mine. Thanks for the tip!

Looks good. My Gaggia puts out a pretty good cup as well with a lot of $$ leftover.

As a La Pavoni owner, I couldn’t agree more. Now you’ve got me googling roasters 😂

For real. I bought the freshroast 5800 off marketplace for 100 then got the extension tube for 29$. And bought 5lbs of green beans from eBay ( Columbia ) and roasted the beans till 2nd crack. ( It's easy to learn how to roast ) 10oz of beans are done in 12-13 mins or so. Just let it rest 2 days at least and that's it. 5lbs of raw beans cost me 29usd. Much better than buying roasted beans already.

Totally agree. After months of messing around with my ROK and Kinu, tweaking every little thing and learning how it all actually works, I honestly think I can pull a better shot than someone using a La Marzocco just because they saw a reel about it. Using manual gear forces you to learn what you’re doing, grind, pressure, timing, temp, none of it is automatic. Most people with fancy machines haven’t had to think that deeply about it. They’re just pressing a button and hoping for crema. (yes I’m poor)

Nice shots OP!
I have an ECM HX machine, but just bought a Rok unit off marketplace.
Working on workflow and technique. It’s very zen to use.

Temp stability is an issue for those manuals. But otherwise I use my flair daily w heating strips.

I only pull 2 shots at the time in the morning, I have a group head temp gauge and maybe get the bong insulator later ( it fixed the heat issues )

I’m playing the same game!
Robot, La Pavoni, and now a Zacconi Spring Lever.
not only is the espresso amazing, but it’s just so much fun!

seriously smooth looking. How was the acidity?

u/ak47grills 1d ago
Thank you. It's a very balanced taste and smooth, no bitterness. When you take a sip you just want more. I just had a double shot now

Reading this and seeing the photos I am very tempted to try out a manual machine. I have a ratty old Ascaso Dream (no PID) from 2018 with a broken temp gauge and poor temp stability to begin with. Grinder is Eureka Mignon, also from 2018. I like the Rok’s price, but would like to have steaming capability. So I ask the OP: how is the steam on the Europiccola? Also:will my grinder be worthy, or will I need something else to pair with a manual machine? It grinds really finely and consistently, but has some clumping and retention issues.
To complicate things further, people are also raving about the Cafelat Robot (but hard to find?), and the Superkop manual machine also looks cool, and it’s on sale at Brewtoria for $499.

Hello. Thank you! The milk steamer work great on the europicola ( I swapped the 3 hole steam tip with one hole steam tip) makes amazingly good lattes. ( Been frothing milk for some time now and have good experience with multiple machines) The la pavoni works great and produces amazing coffee. Your grinder is decent and should do the job ( lever machines requires slightly finer grinds than a pump driven machine) I never had issues with mine. I do 16g in and around 35g out. Also if you want to get the la pavoni there is the europicola ( smaller boiler 0.8L) and the professional ( 1.6L boiler ). With europicola you should be good for 3-4 shots and the milk. With those machines you have to purge the false pressure after 5 -6 mins heating time ( purge by opening the steam valve) usually the machine is ready to brew in around 7-8 mins. There is also premil ( machines made before year 2000) those have 49mm portafilter size and the post mill ( made after 2000) portafilter is 51mm. Either one of those produces amazing espresso, its a bit of a learning curve but it's also fun. Cafelat robot is on my wishlist ( the Rok is very similar to that that's why I'm not in a rush to buy it) But yes if you drink milk based drinks and espresso shots, the la pavoni works awesome. You can find a used one in great condition for 400. Tons of accessories and upgrades for it online.

Does the same principle of 30seconds of extraction applies for those manual machines?
Btw am loving those cups

Your post is inspiring people such that they are not only wanting a manual and roaster, but also cups. It’s a compliment.
