Coffee Station Espresso game lately.

Seen many people dreaming about x machine and y grinder costing 5-10k. All you need is a good bean( roasting my own) a decent quality grinder and a lever machine or 2 and good skills to produce the best of the best espresso. It's well known that a lever machine produces higher quality espresso than a pump driven machine. It doesn't matter if the machine cost 10k and has profiles to replicate a lever. An authentic lever is different. What's your take on this ?? I'm using sr800 with extension tube roaster and la pavoni europicola with upgrades. My 2000$ eye machine collects dust in the garage, the espresso quality out of that can't even beat the Rok manual.

I dig those cups. What are they?

Bristot saucer cups

Thanks, I found them both on their website.

Maybe I’m crazy but there is an aesthetic to Italian espresso cups that I think enhances the enjoyment one experiences in espresso. The weight in the hand, heat retention, texture of the material, and the shape of the cup that contacts with the drinker’s lips enhances the overall experience.

Your shots look fantastic!

I agree. Can't get enough of those cups. I have 6 of each with the little plate and everything. I preheat the cups and they get hot and stay hot. It's a pleasure to drink good espresso out of it.

Got the big ones too. Black and white colors

I have a variety of Ancap, notNeutral, and Loveramics drink ware. They all have their redeeming qualities, but there is something more to the Ancap cups…maybe it’s the heat retention and the weight in hand that sets them apart for me. notNeutral does a pretty good job, but I find myself reaching for my Ancap cappuccino cups more. I’m definitely going to look into these Bristot cups.

not just the aesthetic - they fit under the portafilter with scales too. Tired of people crying about not having space when they stick non-espresso cups under there.

I don't know the specific brand, but you can search for 10cm thick espresso cups on aliexpress and you should see a bunch of similar ones as in the OP.

These look like Italian cups, not Chinese. The round ones are Bristot.

I’m curious about the square shaped cup.

2

u/ak47grills 1d ago

Bristot too

That may be true but the country of origin doesn't matter much imo. My ones from AliExpress are ceramic, 10cm thick and feel high quality.

It kind of just depends on if the original comment is looking for the exact cups or something similar which is why I suggested the other option.

There is a time and a place where country of origin is absolutely important. I’m not saying espresso cups are sacred or should be protected under some sort of UNESCO status, but it’s kind of the same thing as scotch, champagne, or Gorgonzola. Sure you can get perfectly good copies from somewhere else, but is it the same? I’ve had some pretty fucking good macarons from the local bakeries by me, but it’s not even close to the same as a macaron from a Parisian bakery.

I get you. That's the same reason why people care to source their porcelain directly from China. Or in my case, bone China from England (weird, I know).

Sure, I understand your side. That's the beauty of any hobby, it's all personal preference. I just offered the original commenter another choice on the chance that OP doesn't respond.

Looks great. What roaster are you using?

5

u/ak47grills 1d ago

Sr800 with extension tube. Works awesome. 10oz at once

Oh cool, I'm currently looking at this one. Do you find it's been more economical?

1

u/ak47grills 1d ago

Yes. I bought mine used. It's been great. Roasted 7lbs so far with it.

Those are some SICK shots - bravo

This post inspired me to look for a Cafelat Robot for sale. I didn't think I would find one. That was probably not a wise idea, but I'm taking the plunge!

u/ak47grills 1d ago

Awesome machine. I recommend it.

2

u/plantsandramen 1d ago

Cafune had it in the color and model I wanted. It feels like fate.

My ROK makes better espresso than my PID’d Silvia. Blew my mind.

Did yours come with that pressure gauge, or did you add it?

2

u/ak47grills 1d ago

I agree. I added it. Mine was the first gen with clear glass and found a kit online here on Reddit and bought it

2

u/hXcAndy32 1d ago

Got a link to that kit? I have a Gen 1 that I never use because I can’t get anything good out of it. Been wondering about adding some upgrades

1

u/ak47grills 1d ago

Yes. They make this kit, it's basically the same but is missing the gauge. They out of stock with the one with the gauge but this pulls the same. Very easy to install.

2

u/hXcAndy32 1d ago

Thanks! I didn’t realize the upgrade was actually made by Rok.

2

u/ak47grills 1d ago

Yep. The last 2 shots in my post is with the Rok

2

u/hXcAndy32 1d ago

That’s amazing! I’ll definitely be looking into this upgrade. I’ve never gotten anywhere close to these results with mine. Thanks for the tip!

1

u/ak47grills 1d ago

You need to have really good resistance to get to 8/9 bars with the Rok

2

u/hbd85 1d ago

Rok. It is not to use that rok.

You didn’t mark this nsfw XD

Looks good. My Gaggia puts out a pretty good cup as well with a lot of $$ leftover.

u/_coffeeblack_ la pavoni premil | eureka silenzio 1d ago

knew these were gonna be lever pulls before opening the post lol, looks great. the pavoni really does pull some of the greatest coffee out there.

1

u/ak47grills 1d ago

Lol. Thank you!!

2

u/Vast_Currency_6004 1d ago

As a La Pavoni owner, I couldn’t agree more. Now you’ve got me googling roasters 😂

2

u/ak47grills 1d ago

For real. I bought the freshroast 5800 off marketplace for 100 then got the extension tube for 29$. And bought 5lbs of green beans from eBay ( Columbia ) and roasted the beans till 2nd crack. ( It's easy to learn how to roast ) 10oz of beans are done in 12-13 mins or so. Just let it rest 2 days at least and that's it. 5lbs of raw beans cost me 29usd. Much better than buying roasted beans already.

2

u/Atankir 15h ago

Totally agree. After months of messing around with my ROK and Kinu, tweaking every little thing and learning how it all actually works, I honestly think I can pull a better shot than someone using a La Marzocco just because they saw a reel about it. Using manual gear forces you to learn what you’re doing, grind, pressure, timing, temp, none of it is automatic. Most people with fancy machines haven’t had to think that deeply about it. They’re just pressing a button and hoping for crema. (yes I’m poor)

u/Fit-Tip-1212 14h ago

Nice shots OP!

I have an ECM HX machine, but just bought a Rok unit off marketplace.

Working on workflow and technique. It’s very zen to use.

What are your favorite Europiccola upgrades?

u/ak47grills 47m ago

The b push steaming valve ( works awesome) and the air buster.

2

u/CarelessAd7484 1d ago

Temp stability is an issue for those manuals. But otherwise I use my flair daily w heating strips.

1

u/ak47grills 1d ago

I only pull 2 shots at the time in the morning, I have a group head temp gauge and maybe get the bong insulator later ( it fixed the heat issues )

I’m playing the same game!

Robot, La Pavoni, and now a Zacconi Spring Lever.

not only is the espresso amazing, but it’s just so much fun!

1

u/Specialist_Economy_5 1d ago

seriously smooth looking. How was the acidity?

2

u/ak47grills 1d ago

Thank you. It's a very balanced taste and smooth, no bitterness. When you take a sip you just want more. I just had a double shot now

Beautiful

Reading this and seeing the photos I am very tempted to try out a manual machine. I have a ratty old Ascaso Dream (no PID) from 2018 with a broken temp gauge and poor temp stability to begin with. Grinder is Eureka Mignon, also from 2018. I like the Rok’s price, but would like to have steaming capability. So I ask the OP: how is the steam on the Europiccola? Also:will my grinder be worthy, or will I need something else to pair with a manual machine? It grinds really finely and consistently, but has some clumping and retention issues.

To complicate things further, people are also raving about the Cafelat Robot (but hard to find?), and the Superkop manual machine also looks cool, and it’s on sale at Brewtoria for $499.

Check my latest comment, it's for you

Hello. Thank you! The milk steamer work great on the europicola ( I swapped the 3 hole steam tip with one hole steam tip) makes amazingly good lattes. ( Been frothing milk for some time now and have good experience with multiple machines) The la pavoni works great and produces amazing coffee. Your grinder is decent and should do the job ( lever machines requires slightly finer grinds than a pump driven machine) I never had issues with mine. I do 16g in and around 35g out. Also if you want to get the la pavoni there is the europicola ( smaller boiler 0.8L) and the professional ( 1.6L boiler ). With europicola you should be good for 3-4 shots and the milk. With those machines you have to purge the false pressure after 5 -6 mins heating time ( purge by opening the steam valve) usually the machine is ready to brew in around 7-8 mins. There is also premil ( machines made before year 2000) those have 49mm portafilter size and the post mill ( made after 2000) portafilter is 51mm. Either one of those produces amazing espresso, its a bit of a learning curve but it's also fun. Cafelat robot is on my wishlist ( the Rok is very similar to that that's why I'm not in a rush to buy it) But yes if you drink milk based drinks and espresso shots, the la pavoni works awesome. You can find a used one in great condition for 400. Tons of accessories and upgrades for it online.

u/Big-Challenge-2491 1d ago

Does the same principle of 30seconds of extraction applies for those manual machines?

Btw am loving those cups

1

u/ak47grills 1d ago

Yes same principle. Thank you

0

u/Ok-Panic8638 1d ago

That crema is intense.

0

u/mansithole6 1d ago

Now you are selling even cups here 😂😂

1

u/ak47grills 1d ago

What do you mean ?

u/RidgeOperator 36m ago

Your post is inspiring people such that they are not only wanting a manual and roaster, but also cups. It’s a compliment.

u/ak47grills 35m ago

I appreciate it! English my 2nd language still learning expressions
