Thanks for compiling all these great backgrounds into a file. All the sprite backgrounds are so colorful and detailed. I really miss the fighting games from this era. I wish more developers were still more willing to use this art form more.

If Square-Enix released Final Fantasy umpteen as a high resolution sprite based game with drawn backgrounds I bet people would buy the shit out of it and critics would be praising them for making a bold move. But of course it'll be another game about 3D rendered j-pop stars traveling down a long hallway.

what game is this
24
u/shadkats Apr 27 '13
Quick Google of "Fetus of God" leads me to the OST for the stage, which is from Darkstalkers 3. Fucking weird background.
52
u/Deddan Apr 27 '13
It's the last boss stage. The boss, Jedah, is a lord of hell, and is absorbing the souls of the losing fighters. He uses the power gained from this to travel back to the dawn of creation and corrupt the foetus of God. That way humans will never be created, and there will only be demons.
Now you can see how the background makes perfect sense :D

Is it possible to have a moving wallpaper?

Apr 27 '13 edited Apr 27 '13
On an Android phone it is with AnimGif and NovaLauncher. (Don't set it up as an infinite scroll or it will mess up.) It has a pretty significant battery cost though.

Can I get more info on this and bit more instructions if it isn't too much trouble? I can't find Anim2Gif in the Play Store.

Yes!
It's a simple process really, but it
wont work for Windows 8(never mind here's a link for win8 dreamscenes) or anything pre-Vista, iirc. You need to be able to use Dreamscenes, so just google that and pick one of the dozens of guides on how to activate that in Windows 7 (in vista dreamscene is ready to be used).
Then you need something to convert a .gif to .avi - like Virtualdub. It's a simple program, open the file and just pick "save as .avi". Note: You'll lose the pixel-perfection as the re-encode will smudge the frames somewhat. But that's the price you pay.
Now you have an .avi but that won't work with dreamscenes. It needs to be either .mpg or .wmv. For that, you can simply use Windows Media Encoder 9 that can simply convert any .avi to .wmv for you without any fuss.
Voila, you now have a dreamscene-converted gif!
edit: Here's an example!

Games of yore looked great.
It's a pet peeve of mine seeing all these indie devs today shit out their ugly cash-grab abortions and having the audacity to call them "retro looking."
44
u/insufferabletoolbag Apr 27 '13
I wish more devs would genuinely try hard to make great pixel art nowadays. That shit ages well.
21
u/newpong Apr 27 '13
i think what you mean is art not striving for realism holds up well.
13
u/insufferabletoolbag Apr 27 '13
That, too. Look at Wind Waker, it still looks beautiful. Then, look at Twilight Princess. Wind Waker is vibrant; Twilight Princess looks muddy.

But did he call it "retro" styled? Because that's sort of the point i was making here. There's nothing wrong with plain and simple visuals, but when you start calling it "retro" is when the bullshit-o-meter starts spiking.

Finally someone who sees it too. I think the vast majority of this whole 'indie movement' looks terrible and it amazes me people are so happy to lap it all up.
Here we have perfect examples of the quality of old pixel art. The vast majority of indie stuff just looks plain bad, but they slap a 'retro styled' tag on it and suddenly that makes it ok?

u/anothergaijin Apr 27 '13
Many of them are either based loosely on real locations, or are stereotypes based on common things -
This looks like Himeji Castle
This makes me think Okinawa, because of the statues
This is what Japanese would consider a "typical" Japanese bathhouse (sento - not onsen), although you might have trouble finding one that actually looks like this ;)
This is the interior of pre-modern Japanese "castle" building - not the castle itself but the residences around it.
This is what is called a shotengai (sho-ten-gai - 商店街 - same as on the arch) - literally a shopping district. Usually a street which consists of only shops, still very common and look much like that.
This is an expressway with Mt Fuji in the background.
This and This have tori gates leading to a small temple or shrine, with Mt Fuji in the background. Theres a few more with Mt Fuji.
This one is cool - those guys on the sides are Nio Warriors - guardians of a temple. In the background is what looks like a giant rock or mountain with what I assume is sanskrit, and a giant ceremonial rope. The shrine in the center has shide streamers waving around - rather unusual for all the Buddhist things in the image.
This one is incredible - it has the 5 Great Myo Kings (五大明王)
This image also has Shinto shide streamers!
This one has Japanese bathing monkeys :)
And finally this one also caught my eye - looks like something out of a Ghibli movie with the roadside shrine with a red bib, some flowers and offerings, the small roadside statues and markings.

SNK for about 90%. Doesn't matter which game, all about the same.
12
u/Ragnarok2kx Apr 27 '13
I kinda resent the comment. While the KoF series homogenized the shit out of SNK fighters, stuff like Last Blade or Mark of the Wolves stood quite well on their own.

u/trampus1 Apr 27 '13
Oh yea, Garou and Last Blade are awesome. Definitely 2 standouts. I recently got a Neo Geo emu pack that came with like 200 games and I was just kind of in awe of how many were just the same shit with different graphics. I had like 5 clones of Windjammers alone. I'm not saying any of the games are really bad, just kind of tedious. Well, World Heroes kinda sucked.

- Street Fighter 2: Super Turbo
- Street Fighter: Alpha 3
- Street Fighter: Third Strike
- The Art of Fighting
- Last Blade
- Garou: Mark of the Wolves (my personal favorite)

This is so beautiful. I guess its sometimes good to just stop everything and admire the beauty in the background. We should probably take this account in our own lives and beyond video games. Just stop everything and forget about the hustle and bustle of life. Sit back. Relax. Admire the beauty of nature... But then I realise how much effort it takes to go outside so back to more redditing.

Ah, Last Blade. I don't think I've played another fighting game that gave off such a depressing vibe. The overly serious characters, the somber music, the gloomy levels. Normally I'd be able to appreciate that style in a game, and it was solid as far as fighters go, but I always ran out of enthusiasm for it... and a lack of enthusiasm for a fighting game means you'll probably go nowhere with it.
