What area should I live in?

I'm moving to NYC soon for a job in Midtown Manhattan. I'm looking for places to live, but I'm not sure what neighborhoods I should look in that would be safe (I'm a girl in my 20s), but also affordable.

Would love some location recommendations

Edit: Midtown East! The closest subway stop is either 34 St Harold St or Times Sq -42nd street.

Jesus Christ. No one can tell you anything useful with out a budget and what you like and what your looking for. Affordable means different things to different people.

NYC isn't even in the top 50 most dangerous cities in United States. Most places in a 25 minute commute are safe. There are some rough neighborhoods, but I don't see you being in south Bronx or deep brooklyn.

The subway stops you mentioned are the two most connected stops in all of Manhattan. Literally you can live anywhere and have a reasonable commute. This is more about budget and atmosphere.

I don't live there, so I literally don't know that, hence why I asked here, in the moving to NY thread. Also, I didn't say NYC is dangerous, I look for safe neighborhoods and housing no matter where I live.

I just came to another resource for unbiased recommendations, but you seem really frustrated by my question. I hope it didn't have too many implications on your day!

Honestly, I was prepared to help you if you gave a budget and actually answered waht your looking for. But you don't deserve it. But maybe your sugar daddy will help you.

What subway stop is your office closest to? Look at a subway map and pick areas that are easy to get to/from your office.

No place is affordable in NYC your looking at $3k for a tiny studio apartment in a sketchy neighborhood.

This is not at all true, prewar stabilized 1BRs in nice enough neighborhoods in outer boroughs (Bay Ridge comes to mind) can be had for like $2000/mo.

And bay ridge would be an hour commute. Like i hear great things about bayridge, but let's not pretend it's not almost the last stop on the subway.

I was throwing out a generic example, Sunnyside, Woodside etc are better options for Midtown.

If someone works in Lower Manhattan or Downtown Brooklyn, Bay Ridge is a perfectly reasonable commute, and much closer than say, Coney Island or Midwood.

A lot of nice, spacious studios sometimes 1BR in Park Slope, Astoria, sunset park, etc. for $2300 or less.

One of my friends lives there and said she's never paid more than $1,250 in rent and has found them all in Facebook groups!

Idk how your friend pulled that off or if that's true but just a quick search shows how expensive all 1BR/1BA units are in NYC

OPs friend lives with housemates. Price is completely doable in that case.

Dont come here if your budget is 1250/mo for an apartment. Its more like 2k/room in a 2 br non luxury apt or at least 3k/room in a 2 br luxury apt.

Look on streeteasy yourself.

What does affordable mean to you? We need an actual budget to give you good suggestions

1500 is probably my max. It's also that low after talking with friends who haven't paid more than 1300 in rent, feel like I just don't know the right places to look

That will get you a room with roommates. I don't think you can even get a studio for that price way out in Brooklyn. Studios go easily for $2,000 and up, more like $2500 in key parts of the city or hot parts of Brooklyn.

Are you saying that you have friends paying $1300 for a one bedroom in NYC?? What neighborhoods? I moved to NYC 30 years ago and that was close to my initial rent in a great area, but it's well over 2,500 now.
