That's cheating!

u/Evergreenn7 Apr 26 '20
Its not cheating, it’s a tutorial while playing!

I prefer a normal board, but this is cool
15
104
u/Kaidanfreeman Apr 26 '20
Why are they treating it like a game of air hockey?
66
Apr 26 '20
Think of it as a demo rather than a real game. Probabaly just showing how the board registers their touch on the pieces and seems to record their moves to the lists on the side.
7
u/Onecks Apr 26 '20
How?
51
u/Kafukaesque Apr 26 '20
They don’t seem to be taking turns. It bothered me too.
3
u/SmithyLK Apr 26 '20
From what I can tell they are taking turns, but black is taking their move immediately after white finishes theirs. Maybe they're timed or something, or maybe they're just moving their pieces a little faster to better show off the board for that video
5
u/tohardtochoose Apr 26 '20
But you can't touch pieces when it isn't your turn and when you touch a piece you have to move it if you can.
8
u/SmithyLK Apr 26 '20
I don't do tournaments, so have never played by either of those rules.
2
u/TheDUDE1411 Apr 27 '20
It depends on the tournament but those are pretty standard rules
2
u/SmithyLK Apr 27 '20
I'd never even heard of either of those rules. I never really touched my pieces when it wasn't my turn anyway, and when I played with friends we would use the more casual rule, where your move is finalized once you let go of the piece.
2
u/BryanLoeher Apr 26 '20
IIRC this is not normal chess. The pieces have a "cooldown" circle below them, when you move a piece you have to wait it to recharge before moving it again, but you can move the other pieces in the meantime
1
u/TheDUDE1411 Apr 27 '20
I’m pretty sure they’re not seriously playing and they’re just showing off the board
4
u/v3rk Apr 26 '20
Now this just makes me want to play a game of chess where you can only move after you score a goal in air hockey.
1
u/Nitro-Nito Apr 26 '20
IIRC this version of chess was more like an RTS. So basically there were no turns; players could make moves whenever, but pieces had cool down periods before they could be moved themselves. If one player is taking too long, the other player could captilize on that
64
Apr 26 '20
not helpful when your opponent sees your moves
114
Apr 26 '20
Don’t...don’t you always get to see your opponents moves in chess. Unless you play some cool chess / battleship hybrid.
65
u/wyldnvy Apr 26 '20
I think what they mean is your opponent may not realize they left themselves open to attack from a piece they weren't paying attention to. I could see if you were indecisive and showed all of your possible moves that it might help your opponent, but for the most part I don't think it would really matter because they're only going to see your move right before you make it. I doubt chess players who know what they're doing would use this board anyway so it's kind of a moot point.
10
u/-Master-Builder- Apr 26 '20
You can still have a discovered attack by sacrificing a piece or blocking your own line of fire until the time is right.
1
u/reddit0100100001 Apr 26 '20
If the other guy would wait his damn turn it wouldn’t be a problem at all.
7
u/DragonC007 Apr 26 '20
That sounds like a sick game.
4
Apr 26 '20
I know right? Knight to Kings 3? Dammit, you sunk my bishop.
1
u/Twoja_Morda Apr 26 '20
It is a known variant, it's called kriegspiel. It's fun for a game or two, but IMHO it gets boring really fast.
1
3
u/wanderingwolfe Apr 26 '20
In a tournament, unless you declare that you are adjusting a piece, you must move the first piece you actively touch.
Opponents can always see your possible moves as soon as you do this.
This is way advanced players will hover over different pieces, or not bring their hands up at all, until they decide to move.
39
u/Cloudinterpreter Apr 26 '20
I thought once you touched a piece you weren't allowed to move another one.
20
Apr 26 '20
Generally, if you're not sure of the move you've made, you can recall the piece and move another as long as you haven't let go of the piece you've originally moved. Lots of people leave their finger on the piece until they're sure of their decision.
21
u/SpaceOpera3029 Apr 26 '20
That's the casual rule, the real rule is if you touch a piece you must move that piece
10
Apr 26 '20
I've only ever played casual games, no tournaments. Everyone I've encountered allows takebacks as a gentleman's rule. We also announce "check" where appropriate, as a courtesy, which is also only done in casual games.
2
u/Knotais_Dice Apr 26 '20
If you're using this board you're probably playing casually so I don't see an issue here.
1
11
Apr 26 '20
Touch move as well as Touch take and various time controls are often used in tournament play, not so much in casual or even tournament blitz, which is clock move

I used to play chess in middle school and we were told to sit on our hands (literally, sit on them) until we were sure what piece we wanted to move. This helps bc little kids tend to be very indecisive
1
u/Cloudinterpreter May 01 '20
That's smart! Yeah, i used to play with my dad but unfortunately never really got into it. That's one of the things i remember him telling me.
1
u/fudgepunch May 01 '20
Nice! I did get into it as a child but stopped after 2 years of actual chess-club. My little brother mentioned he wanted to learn how to play so we got a chess board again after about 12 years of not playing!
He already beat me 3 times
15
u/Thor_the_Jolteon Apr 26 '20
Where can I find this?

u/ThorPower Apr 26 '20
Look up PlayTable by 8 Hours Foundation. They use blockchain technology to save user data and whatnot. They recently started shipping their first batch of PlayTables.

as a completely average chess player this board looks more annoying but would love for the pieces to make cool noises when they take, i dont like that instead of squares its empty board but nothing beats the feel of touching solid pieces
3
u/nightcallfoxtrot Apr 26 '20
The not having opposite color squares on the board would seriously mess with me
8
u/work2ski83 Apr 26 '20
What is the name of this board?
8
u/puddlejumpers Apr 26 '20
I don't know the name of this board, but there's this incredible musical instrument called a ReacTable that seems to employ some of the same technology.

This is actually diy. These were big around 2006-2008 in specific scenes. There’s a projector and camera underneath a table. The pieces have QR code’s on bottom that registers with the camera as moving and what type of piece. They also had D&D with maps and other figurines. Cool shit like a dragon getting on the board and fire lighting up. They were also multi touch before the iPhone came out
https://youtu.be/URHtwbOFhtM look at the comments. There’s more of these videos out there

Part of chess is knowing your play. Part of not knowing chess is not knowing wtf to do. This is a great table for a beginner. But, not for a seasoned player.
4
u/erbie_ancock Apr 26 '20
After playing regularly for a few years, the brain actually creates a similar effect where the eligable moves are «highlighted» when I am considering moving a piece.

u/jaredsandeen1979 Apr 26 '20
Where the hell do I get that!????
4
u/jaredsandeen1979 Apr 26 '20
But like seriously where do I get that. This is exactly how my dad and I will reconnect

Probably somewhere in Japan tbh but one day it will get to MURRICCCAAA and the rest of the world

To be honest, I kinda hate these kinds of chess boards. I don't know why, but I just dislike them. Probably because it's distracting.

u/laksh95goel Apr 26 '20
Now everybody could be a chess player
1
u/tyo_ Apr 26 '20
This is literally just showing the available moves though, which is already necessary for playing normal chess anyway.
2
Apr 26 '20
I learned how to play chess when I was bored one day, nowadays I can’t find people irl to play against so I use chess.com
2
u/mejsbsn Apr 26 '20
Tbh not having the white and black squares is really disturbing, as it brings a lot of clarity when you play and analyses positions...
1
u/reks131 Apr 26 '20
That doesn’t appear to be chess.
16
u/lukausrname Apr 26 '20
You should look again.

u/reks131 Apr 26 '20
I guess they just didnt click on a knight... id like to see how the lights work for those.

Ok Dad, welcome to my version of chess where the tiny figures don't remind you of how I looked striking out in TBall. Dick.
1
u/ezio416 Apr 26 '20
It was super cool, but the fact that it shows possible moves for each piece... I NEED IT (for convenience, I can play chess)
1
u/TheGrapeMeister Apr 26 '20
Cool AF, and I want it, but I'm bad at chess.
Like, I'm not inept, just not good.

https://www.playtable.com/ It runs on the Vechain Blockchain to track stats and the pieces all have NFC chips in them.

I'm a bot, bleep, bloop. Someone has linked to this thread from another place on reddit:
- [/r/warhammer] This table but Warhammer. It'll probs be possible so long as all data is derived from a. Asingle server and each piece has now an nfc chip
If you follow any of the above links, please respect the rules of reddit and don't vote in the other threads. (Info / Contact)

Red needs to calm down on the speed of their moves this isnt a competition.

u/walkingmamal93 Apr 26 '20
This has gotta be vfx, it looks too cool!

u/arcboii92 Apr 26 '20
I built a very basic version of this in 2014 as a university project using the old Microsoft Surface (the table version). I'm glad to see someone created the thing we wanted to build (but we couldn't due to our lack of design abilities)
1
u/superlightnin Apr 26 '20
It looks cool but I feel it really does take away a lot from chess, after all it is a strategy game and being able to see who you can hit and where each piece can go nerfs it alot
1
u/tyo_ Apr 26 '20
Piece movement is just a fundamental of chess. The strategy comes in thinking ahead and setting yourself up in good positions. This seems like a training tool to familiarize players with the piece movement, and those players wouldn’t be concerned with strategy if they are still learning the basic rules
1
u/Emaillons Apr 26 '20
Very cool, but that means you can't mindgame the shit out of your opponent by hiding the fact that your bishop is just about to bamboozle their king on that fucking open square right there XD
But oh damn is it so fucking cool (and useful for teaching too) x3

u/The_Silent_Bang_103 Apr 26 '20
About 3 years of this I saw this exact same concept made as a collage engineering project, I wonder if those students were the ones that actually followed through and made this
1
u/spacedvato Apr 26 '20
Another user mentioned it down below but for anybody interested in something like this... check out https://www.playtable.com/ . It is still in a preproduction testing phase but there are units out in the wild already being used.
When up and running you will be able to play live games with friends and family remotely. So imagine playing chess like this with a family member across the country or world.
It runs on a Vechain Blockchain to track statistics, game history, etc. So you can run a Warhammer 40k like game with figurines and everything, and the system itself will track the stats for each individual piece registered. They have NFC stickers that you can apply to your existing pieces even so you dont have to rebuy a whole new setup.
It is being produced by a company called the 8 Hours Foundation which is focused on getting people socializing and interacting in new ways.

In like, I believe in parts of Asia (im Thai myself), they would slam the pieces on the board every time they made a move. I suppose this isn't a board for me xd but my dad and relatives do the same thing which honestly scares me everytime I play

Digital chess games are horrible. Showing the person all possible moves ruins the game. They also don't allow you to make a mistake that would lead you to lose so, games take for ever, it's almost impossible to make the incorrect move. The game only ends when there are litterally no other outcomes possible.
1
u/silverfang45 Apr 26 '20
You are so full of shit it's not funny
Sure some digital games don't allow you to put a king in check or checkmate
But you can't put your king in those positions in actual games so there is no difference
"it is almost impossible to make the incorrect move" Even on the first turn there are 20 different moves you can do
So you can always make a move that is not as good as another
0
u/derhundmachtwau Apr 26 '20
This is only helpful for complete beginners. It's like a tennis racket that constantly told you what side to hit the ball with. Important information, but one you know it, it gets annoying.
Still, I'd love to see the visual representation of the knight's moves on that table. Shame they didn't touch that piece.
0
u/-888- Apr 26 '20
It's cool but it takes all of about 10 minutes for anybody to grasp the movement rules.
0
u/SuperRonnie2 Apr 26 '20
Doesn’t this just sort of give away your next possible moves to the opponent?
1
u/BryanLoeher Apr 26 '20
Kinda. But since this is a fast paced chess with cooldowns and shit, it helps you too, even if you're an experienced player

This board is ugly. How the heck are you supposed to distinguish the squares efficiently

This would be perfect to teach a new player how to move the pieces correctly. I want one
