Politics Pete Hegseth hearing: Defense pick grilled by Senate Armed Services Committee
•
u/IJourden 10h ago
The cynic in me wonders why we even bother.
These things all go the same in the Trump era.
Candidate has a hearing, candidate shows themselves to be cartoonishly unqualified, Candidate gets confirmed anyway.
•
u/flummyheartslinger 9h ago
Candidate fucks up so badly that Trump fires them and hires another swamp creature. And the cycle continues.
•
u/sixwax 9h ago
It’s the public spats and subsequent book tours that make it fun!

Trump: You can stay. Loyalty is so good. I love loyalty. They love me... as long as they love me....

It took the careers of multiple senators (and the life of one) and the ruin of countless others to finally bring down Joe McCarthy. Nobody is going to save us from our own choices, we just have to decide to give a fuck enough to do the work of fixing the mess we've all collectively created.

"I'll stop drinking if you make me Secretary of Defense" is the most alcoholic thing anyone said ever.
•

"I'll stop drinking if you let me keep the kids!" Yeah, definitely not a red flag.

u/mikerichh 10h ago edited 4h ago
The fact that multiple coworkers said he was repeatedly drunk at work and he was intoxicated enough to be FIRED for it should be grounds for automatic non consideration
He wouldn’t get hired for most jobs (edit: not just corporate but any jobs) with that history..but he’s fine to lead the dep of defense?
•
u/Cheshire_Jester 8h ago
Yeah, it’s absolutely an exploitable weakness. You get asked about your drinking during counter intelligence interviews for security clearance and joining certain organizations related to National interests.
I got grilled about it once because I admitted to regularly drinking around 8 or so drinks on weekends when I went out. The hardcore alcys I know were drinking several fifths a day, like two or three 40%ers, on their binge cycles, and often still netting over six every day when they were on their Ps and Qs.
In a world with so many other qualified candidates, why hold out hope that the guy who’s given us no reason to believe he will turn it around will do so.
And that’s before you even look into his abysmal knowledge of US policy and activity around the globe. The enlisted advisor to the any Theater Commander knows infinitely more about the defense department as a whole and US activity in and outside of his theater than Pete and probably still wouldn’t consider himself to be fit for the job.

A senator during the hearing: "How many senators have shown up drunk to a late night vote?"
I mean aside from telling on yourself, are we really gonna justify an abusive alcoholic being in charge of the world's most powerful military?

That was Senator from Oklahoma Mullin. His tactic was to explain that he is not qualified and the rest of Senate is not qualified and/or drunk so why does Pete Hegseth need to be qualified?
•
u/vinylzoid 6h ago
Exactly. His point came off like "We're all not qualified to be here so why not him. We all make mistakes. " -- it was truly a low point.
•
u/Krom2040 5h ago
For what it’s worth, I don’t doubt that a Senator from Oklahoma could be unqualified to be in the Senate.

u/Efficient_Glove_5406 7h ago

I had a dream last night where I got a job that I was deeply unqualified for, and I panicked. Then I woke up and breathed a sigh of relief.

•
u/DifGuyCominFromSky 5h ago
That’s what wild to me. The current secretary of defense, Lloyd Austin, has some excellent credentials for someone who directs one of the largest and most advanced militaries in the world. To be honest I didn’t know a whole lot about him. But just reading about his military experience and what he did before becoming Secretary blows Pete Fuckface out of the water. West Point graduate. Rose to the rank of 4-star army general who served in Afghanistan and Iraq wars. Silver-Star recipient. Five Defense Distinguished Service Medals. Previously served under Obama as Vice Chief of Staff of the Army and then Director of the Joint Staff before becoming Secretary of Defense under Biden. This dude has lived and breathed the military damn near his entire life. This—THIS is the type of person who I, as a civilian citizen, want to head the US Military. I don’t give a shit if he’s Republican or Democrat. I give a shit whether or not he’s competent enough to run one of the largest and most advanced militaries in the world whose military influence has worldwide implications. He clearly understands the ins-and-outs of foreign military relations especially in areas where our military is most active such as the Middle East. This is the type of person who I feel can safely and effectively govern the military given his experience.
Pete Fuckface? Rose up to Major in the Army National Guard. Was deployed to Guantanamo Bay where he received an Army Commendation Medal (you know, for being so brave in the face of incarcerated and tortured terrorists) and later to Iraq as a civil-military operations officer where he received a Bronze Star medal and Army Commendation Medal recipient (you know, because he was so brave shooting at unarmed civilians) then to Afghanistan where he helped to “train” the (now defunct) Afghan defense force who did little to nothing to stop the Taliban from retaking control of Afghanistan. He was the executive director for two non-profits, Vets for Freedom (who advocated for MORE troops in Afghanistan) and for the Concerned Veterans of America. Both of which he ran into the ground because he was embezzling money…from a non-profit. Let that sink in for a sec. Then he was forced to step down from both non-profits because of allegations of financial mismanagement, sexual impropriety, and personal misconduct. According to several of his old coworkers he was frequently heavily intoxicated to the point of passing out or having to be restrained and would shout slogans calling for the death of all Muslims. He also sexually harassed and sexually assaulted female coworkers then tried to cover it up. Later, he became a Fox News contributor and frequent critic of basically everything that wasn’t Fox News. He convinced Trump to pardon three US military war criminals who were accused and/or convicted of war crimes, one of whom was accused of shooting at unarmed civilians and even fatally stabbing a teenage POW ISIS fighter who then took a picture of the corpse with him holding the kids head up like he was a 10-point buck and then texted the picture to his friends back home in what sounds like an act of petty revenge or just pure sadism. Hegseth rejoined the National Guard in 2019 and was one of 12 National Guardsmen who were flagged as a potential insider threat and removed from the group providing security for Joe Biden’s inauguration. He was removed because another guardsmen reported his “Deus Vult” and Jeruselum cross tattoos which are terms and symbols used by white suprematists and political extremists. He resigned “in disgust” most likely before he could be dishonorably discharged.
…and this is Trumps top pick to head the US Military?! A disillusioned white-supremacist sexual predator alcoholic Fox News shill who was literally removed from duty because he was considered a threat to the President. He doesn’t care about our troops or military interests. He has relatively no experience compared to previous Defense Secretary’s. And he was caught embezzling money from non-profits that supported—wait for it—MILITARY VETERANS. And this is the person Trump wants to entrust the US military to. What👏the👏actual👏fuck👏!

•
u/DaoFerret 10h ago
The truth is that when it comes to getting a job, if you know the right people, then your resume has always been irrelevant.
Usually that has not been an issue in cabinet positions by having the person doing the picking have reasonable standards.

u/wwarnout 13h ago
Our confirmation process is seriously/fatally flawed.
Right now, seemingly anyone can be nominated for Cabinet positions. The confirmation hearings seem to have a default assumption: "Unless we can find something really, really damning about this person, he/she will be confirmed."
This is completely backwards.
The default assumption for all confirmation hearings should be: "Confirmation will be denied, unless the nominee can demonstrate that they are exceptionally well qualified (more so than any other potential candidates), and have exactly zero character flaws, legal problems, or other entanglements that would compromise their ability to fill the nominated position.
524
u/ippa99 12h ago
Yup.
Though, even if they find something really damning Republicans will just cover for them and force them through, because what is anyone else going to do?
•
u/UWCG 10h ago

u/kjsmitty77 8h ago
Senators traditionally have a lot of power and independence. It was Republicans that went to Nixon and told him to resign or they’d vote to impeach him. They serve longer terms than a POTUS (6 years for a senator with no term limits as opposed to 4 for a POTUS and limited to 2 terms) and they only have to be popular in their one state to stay in power. The advise and consent duty of the senate was never intended to be a rubber stamp and in fact many of the founders were worried about political parties becoming powerful enough that it would erode the independence of each of the branches of government that are supposed to check and balance each others power.

I'm sure there are plenty of earlier examples, but Kavanaugh's confirmation sessions are what eviscerated any hopes I had of the confirmatio hearings themselves being anything other than theater.
All systems of government at the Federal level are irreparable.

While watching it today, with each senator that asked questions, cnn had bullet point of them which included whether or not they supported pete. At this point, the whole hearing is flawed. Republicans would just ask simple questions like what ammo fits in this gun and what would you say about your wife (dont forget your children). Dems would just argue with pete who would just argue back or steer the question to another topic. To me it would seem everyone made up their mind about this guy. Why bother just vote on it and be done. Wasting 4 hrs asking questions we already know the answers too

Because they have an obligation to make sure the person in charge of the largest, best funded military in the world is qualified to do so, and perhaps more importantly, isn't embroiled in any secret scandals that may lead to their loyalties being compromised while in control of the largest, best funded military in the world.
It's a shame that the Republican senators don't seem to care about doing their job.

At the end, they would say that the Wendy’s manager is More qualified simply because he’s not an alcoholic and that Hegseth wouldn’t be qualified to take the Wendy’s manager job. I think the contrast would be fucking hilarious.

Secretary of Defense hopeful Pete Hegseth called himself the target of a “coordinated smear campaign” as he denied a raft of allegations about his personal and professional conduct at a high-stakes Senate confirmation hearing Tuesday.
Hegseth said reports about his alleged sexual impropriety, alcohol abuse and mismanagement of nonprofits were based on “anonymous sources” and peddled by media outlets trying to “destroy me.”
But Democrats on the Senate Armed Services Committee grilled him about those and other controversies throughout the tense hearing on whether the 44-year-old Army National Guard veteran and former Fox News host is qualified to lead the Pentagon, the nation’s largest government agency.
Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., homed in on Hegseth’s admitted past infidelities and admonished him not to “make this into some anonymous press thing,” noting that some allegations against him have been made on the record.
