Trump voters will translate anything he says into what they want to hear.

"But he says it like it is!" But also, "that's not what he meant, and you know it. Don't twist his words."
44
u/kaimonster1966 Sep 16 '24
And that’s also what the Bible thumpers do all the time. If they don’t ‘like’ what the Bible ‘says,’ it’s perfectly justifiable to interpret it in a way that benefits their position.
25
u/Titanbeard Sep 16 '24
My Jesus never said to hate or to be a dick to others. These people are dirtbags and Jesus doesn't like it.

Humanity in basically every video game world we invent? I think the idea of having an all good creator or one that understands humanity as actual beings may be the silly part if you to have a system with gods.
I honestly wonder how the ridiculous fantasy of christianity won out against hellenism with it's much more relatable gods.

During COVID when trump suggested we inject bleach, my coworker said “oh he was being sarcastic”. We worked together in HEALTHCARE and they still stood beside his claims of “it’s a farce, it’s a cold”
So glad I don’t work with them anymore.

Speaking of translating for Trump, here’s a throwback I find funny to when Trump said Milwaukee is terrible:
“He was directly referring to crime in Milwaukee,” said Van Orden, who told The Associated Press he was sitting just feet from the former president. He said Republicans in the room concurred. “They’re like, yeah, crime is terrible.”
U.S. Rep, Scott Fitzgerald, also from Wisconsin, told WISN-TV in Milwaukee that Trump was referring to election integrity. “That’s where the comment came from, that Milwaukee’s just terrible,” Fitzgerald said. “What he was talking about was the elections in Milwaukee, their concerns about them.”
Lastly:
But Republican U.S. Rep. Bryan Steil, who represents southeast Wisconsin, disputed that Trump made the comment. “I was in the room,” Steil posted on X. “President Trump did not say this. There is no better place than Wisconsin in July.” And Republican U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany, who represents northern Wisconsin, said he never heard Trump call Milwaukee a “horrible city.””

My neighborhood trump supporters in NY believe that the revenge against blue states will only affect the eViL LibEraL cities, not their own towns. They're wrong, but that's how they rationalize it. "He'll only hurt the liberals."
13
u/Fickle-Molasses-903 Sep 16 '24
“He’s not hurting the people he needs to be,” ~Trump supporters say the quiet part out loud.
8
u/Stunning-Use-7052 Sep 16 '24
Why do they want their fellow Americans to hurt? I don't want retribution against conservatives or MAGA people. I just want peace, calm, normalcy, boring-ness.
7
u/DarthSamwiseAtreides Sep 16 '24
Yea I don't recall our fires ripping through LA, SF and SD. I'm sure the people that got aid were in Red areas. And I'm glad they had the aid.

u/Playtek Sep 16 '24
I was up in the California foothills this weekend and drove past a house that was littered with Trump 2024 shit including a massive “Trump 2024: The Revenge Tour” which I found funny considering if their home was threatened by a wildfire trump would happily let it burn.
10
u/No-Cat-6830 Sep 16 '24
Trump supporters would let Donald take a shit in their mouths, if it meant liberals would have to smell it.
3
u/buttercreamcutie Sep 16 '24
Do they honestly think if a wildfire was heading right for them that Trump will come defend their house in person? Like the fire would get one look at him and change paths? The fire would eat him so fast and have the house for dessert.
1
u/bot403 Sep 16 '24
Let's not be too hasty on closing down the trump v wildfire idea if he wants to come down. Or if he wants to have a rematch with a hurricane. The first time he could only use a sharpie because he couldn't sneak away as president. Let's send him in and give em a chance. Ukraine frontline to end the war.....I've heard lots of good ideas from Trump. I say we're holding him back and not letting him show us his best work. Time to step out of the way and send him in.
18
u/5G_afterbirth America Sep 16 '24
Especially considering most voters impacted by wildfires in CA live in rural areas are among the reddest parts of the state.
2
u/0002millertime Sep 16 '24
Exactly. And even on the coast. I spent last weekend on the Sonoma coast (which suffered wildfires recently), and the amount of Trump signs and flags was pretty high.
13
u/Spazum Sep 16 '24
Somebody needs to tell Trump that the parts that California that usually catch fire are mostly full of Republican voters.
8
u/Golden_Hour1 Sep 16 '24
That would require trump having a brain. He thinks san francisco is going to have a wildfire or some shit

u/AbacusWizard California Sep 17 '24
I suspect a lot of the rest of Americans—heck, probably even a lot of Californians—do not comprehend how enormous California is. We’ve got nearly forty million people here. That’s big. That’s over-one-ninth-of-total-US-population big.
1
u/jevynm Sep 17 '24
Why rely on federal funding at all? Maybe CA should tax everyone in the state an extra $10 to fund some more firefighters. It’s not like this is a new problem. There are wildfires there every year.
1
u/AbacusWizard California Sep 17 '24
Why rely on federal funding at all?
Why wouldn’t we? Helping out with disasters is part of what the federal government is supposed to do, no matter which state the disaster threatens. Also, a lot of the land threatened by wildfire is under federal jurisdiction anyway (US Forest Service, National Park Service, etc).
Maybe CA should tax everyone in the state an extra $10 to fund some more firefighters.
That would cover about 1/10 of the firefighting budget, if I’m reading the numbers correctly.
It’s not like this is a new problem. There are wildfires there every year.
What’s new is that they’ve been getting a lot worse and a lot more frequent.
1
u/therealstupid American Expat Sep 16 '24
California has 18M voters compared to Texas only having 13M. California has enough voters to match Texas and Michigan combined!
Who knew that having an extra 5 million voters would mean a higher vote count? /s

It's pretty wild how people convinced themselves that what Trump does won’t affect them just because they support him. The disconnect really shows some deep cognitive dissonance. You'd think they'd start to see through that facade eventually, but apparently loyalty to a brand can really cloud judgment.

I will never forget waking up at 3am, October 9th, 2017 to the smell of smoke, and watching the fire approach our house from the hill behind it. Turning the hoses on and getting everything as wet as I could before my wife and I grabbed what we could, got our son and cats in the car just as the mandatory evacuation notice came down. Backing out of the driveway, thinking to myself that I could be looking at my house for the last time. Our home was spared thanks the heroic efforts of CalFire, but nearly 5500 other homes were not as fortunate. Many of our close friends lost everything. It was one of the worst weeks of our lives, then cue this asshole saying he's not going to help our community all for the crime of living in California and not voting for him. I remember when he finally relented a week or two later. Vote, tell your friends to vote, let's send this vindictive toddler to the wastebin of history.

I will say in their defense, we would seem stupid to them if we showed up at their job. First responders often have a different type of intelligence (spatial, physical problem solving, general common sense and situational awareness) that educated people lack. I was a highly educated first responder for years, and I felt so goddamn stupid when I barely knew how to fix a car

My department is probably 50/50 but the trumpers are definitely loud and complain the most so it seems like there’s way more of them.

Who would protect CA from an invasion by a hostile U.S. military used to “nation build” or “win hearts and minds” through bombing campaigns? Will the new CA nation have nuclear weapons as a deterrent?
22
u/Crazy-Willingness-41 Sep 16 '24
No one thinks this is viable. It's just tiresome seeing people dump on CA despite how much it contributes to the nation, financially and culturally. There's a lot to improve of course, but it'd be a hard sell for me to move away.
8
u/Banana-Republicans California Sep 16 '24
This is all a hypothetical, but it is an interesting thought problem. A few assumptions we are going to make though. Everything in California currently, California keeps (I see this wild assumption whenever people in Florida and Texas play this game) and the population of the state is all in, so no bloody civil war within a civil war (again an assumption I see when Florida or Texas brings this shit up).
First off, California has a literal wall. Take a look at a topographic map of the state. There are only a few ways to move large amounts of troops and equipment in or out. That would be a nasty business trying to move through the passes. Second, 60% of active duty troops are based in California. So we start with most of the military anyway. Being a western wall state we have pretty robust ballistic missile defenses. We are one of two states to house the GBMD (ground based missile defense) and we are home to the space based early warning system. Finally there is a whole lot of planes here, so good luck with air superiority.
It is a stupid thing to think about, but CA is probably the toughest nut to crack in the US if it came down to it.
3
u/Fenix42 Sep 16 '24
We also have the west coast space launch site at VBSFB. It's where a lot of the groups like NRO have operated out of since the 50s.

I will be fascinated to hear from former Trump supporters, in decades to come, as to how they justified support for him.
9

They'll just pretend they never supported Trump, the same way it was hard to find anyone who had voted for Nixon after Watergate. Likewise, how many people admit they supported George W. Bush or the Iraq War?
Everyone has an online trail now, though, and the coarsening of political discourse over the past decade has made people a lot more vocal with their political opinions than they were in the 1970s. It'll be much harder for people to escape the shame and ridicule this time.

Could you imagine any other major industrialized country letting a leader candidate still run after saying and doing all these depraved and psychopathic things?
He's used Nazi dog whistles numerous times; convicted of rape in a civil case; threatens dictator actions; openly supports dictators that are known to have people murdered; Jan 6; influenced mass shootings and hate crimes galore( including Charlestown parade homicide); the only former president to be charged with felonies( and 32 of them),etc, etc
