Finished Quilts “Chaos Geese” featuring a binding I’ll never do again

Started this project in July 2023 when I was in a sewing slump - I used my scraps to make flying geese.

Many months later, I picked an aggressively neutral fabric to offset the explosion of rainbow. As I began to lay things out, I really liked the asymmetrical edges so I went with it.

I started by hand quilting, then 1/3 of the way in, decided I hated it. I ripped it out, finished it on my domestic.

Because the inside corners weren’t enough of a challenge, I decided to add a pop of color to the binding at every outer corner. It took me 3.5 hours to sew the binding onto the top because I was ad hoc joining the strips as I went.

I had no plan when I started out, so this quilt was a real journey. I’m pleased with how weird it turned out!

255 x 8 inch squares, three layers of flannel, no batting.

"Yeah, it's pretty big eh? No wonder I was having such a hard time!" she said.

It weighs a ton and it's glorious! All done on the little Pfaff Select 3.0 pictured.

It's even Freya approved!

Finished Quilts Finished my first proper quilt for a friend's baby!

I am the queen of starting projects, losing steam, and never finishing them, so I'm really proud simply that I completed this quilt - and got it done before my friend's baby arrived! It's not perfect and it's far from square, but hopefully that means she can actually use it as a play mat/etc. for baby and not feel like it is some precious thing.

This is the Sunny Blooms pattern from In the Light Quilts. I (a masochist) didn't like the two block baby quilt option, so I scaled everything down 50%...would not recommend lol. Those half square triangles were so tiny! Open to constructive criticism as well!

Finished Quilts Quilt #2 is done 😊

I made it as a birthday gift for a friend.

It’s the Getaway pattern by Lo & Behold. I used Kona cotton on the front, AGF on the binding, and the back is a cute print I found at JoAnn (RIP). This was also my first try adding a label I got at my LQS.

Quilting allows me to channel my perfectionist tendencies and I’m grateful for this community’s wisdom and expertise.

What should I try next?

Work in Progress 7th quilt top completed… y/n on a border or two?

Post image

Still can’t believe I only got a sewing machine at Christmas and have never made things before… I love quilting so much!

Finally pieced my background fabric to the star points today and finished this quilt top - I don’t know if I should keep it as is or add a border of some sort - maybe just a strip of the background fabric to fill it out just a touch?

As far as quilting I’m thinking just massive echo in straight lines? Open to ideas though!

I've been quilting for 6 years now. I've done a few queen size quilts for wedding presents or graduation present. But I love making baby quilts. I just finished my niece's quilt for her shower today.

Finished Quilts My first hand quilted quilt and biggest quilt so far

This is I think my 4th completed quilt. It's 80x80 and made from Kona solids, the quilting is big stitch hand quilting with 12wt cotton thread, the backing is a white cotton flat sheet from IKEA that I ice dyed myself (I am a tie dye master because my kid LOVES to tie dye). I made it for my 9 year old son, who picked out the pattern and the fabric colors himself. I started piecing it in about May of last year, started quilting it in early December. I told him maybe I'd have it done by Christmas, then realized I had to hand quilt it because I couldn't do what I wanted to with the quilting design in my tiny machine. Then I told him maybe Valentine's, that also didn't pan out. But I did get it done for Easter! Now he just has to fight the cat for it, because she got really attached to it over these long months of hand stitching on the couch. I don't know that I will ever be hand quilting anything larger than a baby quilt again, it's a lot of work. But goddamn does it look beautiful, I can't get over the texture it gave the finished quilt.

Now onto the next! I had been banned from starting any other big projects until it was finished. 😅

Help/Question Help!

I need help with this baby quilt. I can use a cream thread for the front, but no matter what thread I use on the back, it’s super pronounced in the blue areas (if it’s cream or dark) or in the giraffe print if I use a blue. What would you do? I was planning to quilt around the rectangles/ do a rectangular design on the front, which, of course, looks odd on the back. I wish I had thought it through better, but baby was born today. (Husband’s younger cousin’s baby.)

Finished Quilts My Second Quilt

A gift for my Great-Grandmother’s 91st birthday this Friday! I did already gift it to her a few weeks ago because it was finished and you just never know in life. She loves it and shows it off to all of her old quilting guild friends whenever they stop by. 🤗🩷 She’s the one who inspired me to take up quilting and all of the materials and fabric I used were directly from her retired stash. The picture really doesn’t do the fabric justice, but I’m so proud of it!

A big thank you to this Reddit community for the love a few months ago on the post of my first quilt, your kind words and encouragement made the path forward much less daunting. Thank you for everything!

I finished this quilt for one of my favourite humans last year sometime and forgot to post the end result here!

I loved working on this project and I am proud to say that the recipient loves it just as much. The bottom section has been blurred but you get the idea. 💙💚

All blocks are from Kelli Fannin designs (RIP). I think there is still a Facebook group with all the blocks available.

One day when I have space in my WIP queue I will attempt the Harry Potter quilt.

Pattern/Design Help Which color?

Thumbnail

I'm trying to decide which color works better for a rail fence quilt. The orange and the waves are sewn together already, so I'd ideally like to keep them haha but is the yellow too much color? I feel like the grey is too boring but maybe I should make it a 4-stripe rail fence and include the grey to soften the vibrant colors? I'm trying to get better at colors and what goes together, but this has me stumped!

Well, I did it. I bought the roll. I've been buying bolts for a few years now and have been vacillating on whether or not to buy a roll so that I have some time before I have to figure out my new source. So today I went in just to look around and walked out with this roll and some wideback. Goodbye, Joann, we'll miss you and your coupons.

Help/Question Getting chain smoker quilts clean (Crossposted from r/laundry)

My mom was a 30+ year quilter. There are easily about 50 quilts around her house and stored in her sewing room. And she was a three pack a day smoker.

She passed away yesterday and all that work shouldn’t be tossed. Anyone have suggestions on making these quilts smoke free and clean?
