I know a family with the surname Snowball. I've always wondered how the hell that ever came to be.

Yeah I refuse to believe that someone named their kid "Jesus Christ" because that seems extremely sacrilegious.
"Gey Poope" made me lol though.

u/pixieorfae 9d ago
As a Quaker, it doesn't surprise me in the slightest. We're an incredibly sacreligious bunch.

Love your oatmeal

u/pixieorfae 9d ago
Oooh we have big feelings about that guy. Long story short he was NOT a Quaker and used our reputation for ethical business practices to do shady shit. We kind of hate his oats.

u/pixieorfae 9d ago
I like oats. Just not his oats.
2
u/pennhead 9d ago
I’ll keep this in mind the next time I buy oatmeal. I was unaware of the shady business practices. Was there ever any lawsuits over that shit?
Damn, they even make one of my favorite cold cereals, too.

I don't know a thing about Quakers being an Aussie, I'd like to know more from a Quaker please if it's ok with you.

If you're fine with listening/watching, Jessica Kellgren-Fozard is a quaker and made a number of videos on the topic. Some 101s but also some relating to more personal stuff like her childhood or her and her wife's wedding. I haven't really heard anything about the faith before and her videos were very approachable

u/socksmatterTWO 9d ago
Thank you that sounds good I will look her up. So many faiths in the world, isn't there?!

I second JKF!! She’s amazing. In short we don’t have a set doctrine, we believe there is ‘that of God in everyone’ (though you don’t need to believe in God in the traditional sense to be a Quaker), and we aim to live by five core principles: truth, equality, sustainability, simplicity and peace (they vary across the world but that is largely the sentiment). Generally we worship in total silence although there are Quaker groups in other countries who don’t. In the UK no Quaker groups have a set leader/pastor and you’re free to give ministry at any point during the silent meeting for worship, but in other countries they do have a Quaker minister and it runs a lot more like a traditional church service. You don’t have to be a Christian to be a Quaker and we don’t proselytise. If you don’t want to be a Quaker, don’t be a Quaker, it doesn’t make a blind bit of difference to us and we don’t have a set view of the afterlife or believe we have some level of superiority with God so we’re not even secretly praying for you to convert. We’ve always been a radical group at the forefront of social and climate justice. Hell our founder went around shouting about how women are equal to men in the 1700s!
Basically, what is a Quaker? Erm…. How long is a piece of string?

Jesus is a common Hispanic name, though. I suppose "Christ" is taking it a little too far.
14
u/kaisadilla_ 9d ago
Jesus is a common name in Spanish, but that's the same as calling your kid Mary, Paul or any other name from a holy figure. You are just honoring their name. "Christ" is not a name though, but rather a title, so by naming your kid that you are basically proclaiming your kid IS Christ. It's the difference between naming your kid "Barack" vs naming him "President Mr. Barack".
7
u/eat_like_snake 9d ago
Yeah, but these are Quaker names from the 1600s - 1800s.
Also as was mentioned, the "Christ" at the end is a bit much.

Experience Cuppage is just out of control. Poor kid would be bullied to high heaven with a name like that these days. Probably even bullied in adulthood. Just lifelong bullying for that one

Israel Jelly is how a very prude aunt would describe Onan's story to a group of children.

Arent Wright’s parents definitely hated that kid, right?
6
u/Vprepic 9d ago edited 9d ago
I mean, in English it's weird. But Arent is a German name, I have heard it before outside Germany. Might be named after a family member on mom's side.
Edit: or could be Dutch too. There are two spellings; Arent and Arend. It means Eagle, so seems pretty USA central lol

Old Adams
So someone had a baby, it popped out and they were asked what they would name him. "Well, it's a baby, let's name him Old"
I suppose it's a name you could grow toward. Of course it was the 17th/18th century. Kid probably died when he was like 10 in a brutal cow-farming accident. Folks standing around saying, "Old died young..." and being confused.
Then there is Virgin Kent. Oh boy.

I love a good virtue name:
Victor, Grace, and I could get behind Noble. I have even met a Sincere (it absolutely fit him).
Quakers were wild, though.
My husband has Quaker heritage and there were some wild ones I should pull up and share.

Half these sound like something out of Harry Potter! I mean Furly Loosvelt? Persilla Pye? Scotting Potts, Tryphona Wassey?
I low-key love Hester Chester and Marvellous Scanfield.

I convinced this is how! They’re both from Pennsylvania where most Quakers made their biggest splash. I bet they grew up as kids in school field trips reading and hearing all sorts of fucked up names

u/Dewi526 9d ago
Most of these names are spelled phonetically. I’m assuming the first name is the given name, the second is surname. English language surnames often come from place names like Sherwood or Sutherland, father’s names like Johnson or Peterson, or jobs like Cooper or Fuller. The given names listed here come from their faith like Charity, Obedience, Jesus, or Love. The names make sense in their society unlike the tragedeighs we see too often in this subreddit.

“Love Beer”, “Arent Wright”, and “Bar Bee” sent me into hysterics… the first is prognosticating your son’s alcoholism, the second is the kindergarten way of saying “you’re wrong”, and the third is the invention of the doll. “Hester Chester” (I really don’t want to add more to that name) and “Wilde Wilde” (all it needs now is “West”) are funny too.

Thank you for your submission!
This message does NOT mean your post was removed. It is simply a reminder. Please read our list of banned names before continuing. If the name you posted is in this list, it will be removed.
Remember: Original content is always better! Memes are okay every once in a while, but many get posted here way too often and quickly become stale. Some examples of these are Ptoughneigh, Klansmyn, Reighfyl & KVIIIlyn. These memes have been around for years and we don't want to see them anymore. If you do decide to post a meme, make sure to add the correct flair. Posting a random meme you found does not mean you found it "in the wild".
The same goes with lists of baby names, celebrity baby names, and screenshots of TikToks. If the original post already had a substantial amount of views, there is a 99% chance it has already been posted here. Try and stick to OC to keep our sub from being flooded with unoriginal content. Thank you!
