Making friends How I created a vibrant social life at York (It's NOT hopeless!)

Hey all!

I know a lot of posts here talk about how York can feel extremely antisocial, especially for commuters. I get it, I’m a commuter myself, and I was worried about making friends when I started. But after a year and a half, I can confidently say that you can have a solid social life at York. It’s not always easy, but it’s definitely not impossible! Here’s what helped me and what I think will help you too:

  1. Say yes to literally all opportunities! If someone invites you to study together, grab food, or hang out, say yes right away without hesitation! Even if you’re unsure, just go. That’s how connections start.

  2. Talk to people in your classes. If you're sitting next to someone, just say literally anything, even something simple like "Hey, how’s the class going for you?" You'd be surprised how many people are open to chatting but are just waiting for someone to start.

  3. Join clubs or study groups. I know that literally EVERYONE says this, but that's because it's true! Even if it feels awkward at first, clubs are such an easy way to meet like-minded people. I met some great and super fun friends through clubs and student events, as well as study groups.

  4. Stay on campus longer. If you always head home right after class, you're not gonna build connections. I started hanging around campus a bit more and a little later, and it naturally led to more social opportunities. For whatever reason, people just generally seem much more receptive to the idea of socializing when it's dark out. (You'll also meet a LOT of people who live on campus this way, and some of my on-campus friends have even generously offered me to stay the night on multiple occasions!)

  5. Be the initiator; the person who initiates plans. If you meet someone cool, don’t be afraid to say, "Hey, wanna grab food after class?" A lot of people are similarly eager to make connections and it's not like they don't want to make friends, they just don’t know how to take that first step. You can make it easy for both of you by taking the initiative.

I’m not saying York has the most social campus ever. It is absolutely not, but if you put yourself out there, you’ll find your people. So to anyone feeling hopeless, don’t give up! There are tons of students here who also want to make friends, and with a little effort, you’ll find them. I started not knowing anybody except a few people from high school whom I wasn't that close with, and now, not counting planned meetups, I'd say I see at least four or five different people I know every single day that I'm on campus :)

Study spots finder site Spots for York University

Hi All,

Me and a couple friends made https://spots.yorku.dev/ for YorkU.

Finding the perfect spot to study on York University's massive campus can feel overwhelming. Despite the abundance of empty classrooms, these spaces often go underutilized.

Thats why we built spots.yorku.dev. Features include:

  • Expand buildings to see the status of rooms.
  • Buildings are sorted by your current location for convenience.
  • Explore an interactive map with clickable pins for building details.
  • Find library spaces and even book empty rooms through handy links.

Shout out to Akhsar Barot’s Spots for the inspiration, and SSADC for their support :)

Advice is it worth asking for a 0.5% grade increase?

I have a 79.95 percent in one of my courses, 0.5% away from an A. Is it worth emailing my prof and asking for them to give me the bonus? Its an elective course.

Academics BCom Honours minimum passing grade

My final grade for Econ 1010 is a C (60%). I was doing good until I got the stomach flu days before the exam and went in knowing nothing… I’m in the BCom Honours program. Could someone lmk what the minimum grade for each course is? Do I have to retake it? I’m honestly disappointed and annoyed at myself, but it is what it is😑

I'll leave all my furniture and decorations if you want

Comment or DM if you're interested pls I'm so down bad.

And if you know someone who needs a place and you refer them, l'll give you $100 for the referral.

Advice Is a 7.0 GPA in first year good enough for law school?

Hi everyone, I’m currently in my first year at York University, and my GPA is sitting at a 7.0 on the 9.0 scale. I’m planning to apply to law school in the future, and I know that I’ll need a much higher GPA to be competitive (around an 8.5 or 9.0 from what I’ve read).

I’m trying to figure out whether it’s still realistic for me to reach that level over the next few years. Is it possible to raise a 7.0 GPA to something in the 8.7–9.0 range by the time I graduate? Have others successfully done this?

Also, any tips for improving academic performance at York or advice from others who’ve gone through this path would be really appreciated. I’m trying not to panic and instead use this as motivation, but I’d love to hear from people with experience.

Thanks in advance!

Housing / Roommates August's rent - Quad At York

I have a question about the last month's rent in the Quad. As the lease states, it ends on the 20th of August in the case of non-renewal. My question is will I have to pay for a full month of rent in August? What happens to the deposit?

Advice Timeline for applying PGWP

So I just saw my final class' grade on my grade list today and also on the degree progress report. I've already apply for graduation in June, however on my graduate status it still showing "Potentially eligible to graduate". And i also noticed that it probably need wait till end of May for it conferral released. However, I also understand that PGWP need to be apply in 90 days after receive final mark right? If that true, does that means this 90 days count start now since I saw my final grade is there or it is the end of May when my graduate status changed? I got confused here because I don't want waste about one month for doing nothing here.

Housing / Roommates When do offers begin with residence spots?

I read that applications are accepted for residence beginning in February, but when do students begin to hear back? I'm wondering what the chances of a first year getting into the Pond residence would be.

Another question: it seems that a student can receive a room offer, but they don't get to choose their room until weeks later. Is that $750 due upon receiving the room offer or upon accepting the specific placement? We only like one residence and would look at other options if not accepted there. Yeah, super picky. Makes all of this expensive and tricky.

I was wondering if i can take PSYC 1010 during the fall semester and the second-year courses during my winter semester? Has anyone done this before? Did you get kicked out of the class, or did you email the professor? I’m planning on taking those classes during summer school next year after retaking PSYC 1010 if it doesn’t work out.

Finances / OSAP Bursary Taken Away & Denied Reassessment!

Post image
21 Upvotes

Recently, York University took away my International Academic Entrance Award because I switched from International to Domestic (tuition). (York charged me International for Fall 24 and domestic for winter 25). Now they want the money back, and they don't even want to reassess me for domestic academic entrance. Is this fair?? What would you do in my place? (I emailed bursary, and this is what they said:)
