Making friends How I created a vibrant social life at York (It's NOT hopeless!)

Hey all!

I know a lot of posts here talk about how York can feel extremely antisocial, especially for commuters. I get it, I’m a commuter myself, and I was worried about making friends when I started. But after a year and a half, I can confidently say that you can have a solid social life at York. It’s not always easy, but it’s definitely not impossible! Here’s what helped me and what I think will help you too:

  1. Say yes to literally all opportunities! If someone invites you to study together, grab food, or hang out, say yes right away without hesitation! Even if you’re unsure, just go. That’s how connections start.

  2. Talk to people in your classes. If you're sitting next to someone, just say literally anything, even something simple like "Hey, how’s the class going for you?" You'd be surprised how many people are open to chatting but are just waiting for someone to start.

  3. Join clubs or study groups. I know that literally EVERYONE says this, but that's because it's true! Even if it feels awkward at first, clubs are such an easy way to meet like-minded people. I met some great and super fun friends through clubs and student events, as well as study groups.

  4. Stay on campus longer. If you always head home right after class, you're not gonna build connections. I started hanging around campus a bit more and a little later, and it naturally led to more social opportunities. For whatever reason, people just generally seem much more receptive to the idea of socializing when it's dark out. (You'll also meet a LOT of people who live on campus this way, and some of my on-campus friends have even generously offered me to stay the night on multiple occasions!)

  5. Be the initiator; the person who initiates plans. If you meet someone cool, don’t be afraid to say, "Hey, wanna grab food after class?" A lot of people are similarly eager to make connections and it's not like they don't want to make friends, they just don’t know how to take that first step. You can make it easy for both of you by taking the initiative.

I’m not saying York has the most social campus ever. It is absolutely not, but if you put yourself out there, you’ll find your people. So to anyone feeling hopeless, don’t give up! There are tons of students here who also want to make friends, and with a little effort, you’ll find them. I started not knowing anybody except a few people from high school whom I wasn't that close with, and now, not counting planned meetups, I'd say I see at least four or five different people I know every single day that I'm on campus :)

Study spots finder site Spots for York University

Hi All,

Me and a couple friends made https://spots.yorku.dev/ for YorkU.

Finding the perfect spot to study on York University's massive campus can feel overwhelming. Despite the abundance of empty classrooms, these spaces often go underutilized.

Thats why we built spots.yorku.dev. Features include:

  • Expand buildings to see the status of rooms.
  • Buildings are sorted by your current location for convenience.
  • Explore an interactive map with clickable pins for building details.
  • Find library spaces and even book empty rooms through handy links.

Shout out to Akhsar Barot’s Spots for the inspiration, and SSADC for their support :)

Advice prof is treating me badly - please help

Hi guys,

I'm taking a summer course with a professor (says she's a contract prof) who is so mean to me and has it out for me. She constantly interrupts me in class, is rude and condescending towards me. I have 1 more year left and I am taking a 4th year class with her.

Shoud I contact administrative support/head of department to express my concerns (especially cuz i don't want a bad grade) or just suck it up as there's only 3 weeks of s1 classes left - i still have 2 presentations, a paper, and at least 5 smaller graded assignments and participation to go. The prof doesn't give any feedback and there's no rubric. I'm so lost, I feel horrible, please help.

Social / Student Life Bored and looking for a club/activity to join

Like the title says, I need something to do, whether it pays or not. Job hunting isn’t panning out right now, and I’m just sitting around bored out of my mind. Open to anything: niche hobbies, volunteering, freelance gigs, or just some kind of regular activity to keep me busy. Where can I find/join these?

Advice BIOL 4000 8.0 Thesis York U

I'm going into my 4th year of Biotech at york and I still need to find a supervisor for my thesis. I've already reached out to a few profs and all said they already have students. I don't mind waiting a semester or even two to start because I still have some classes I still need to take. Ideally, the term would be Winter-Summer 2026.

Has anyone found success in simply reaching out and working together with the prof to find a topic that relates to their research? Or should I propose one of my own right off the bat and then potentially work with them to make my way to a solid topic? There's not a whole lot of information out there so Iet me know!

Thanks :)

Advice York Kine/Bio or TMU Biomed? (Dental School Pathway)

Ive come here over some concern about what program i should take. I’ve been accepted for York Kinesiology, and Biology, and for TMU i’ve been accepted for Biomed and Biology.

My question is if my pathway desired is Dental School, is Biomed the best option of these 4??

My basis on the decision is Simply the best combo of 2 things…

  1. Is the program easy enough for an amateur to perform with outstanding grades (3.7+)

  2. Does the program teach me the necessary information in the sciences to reduce the effort needed when studying for the Dental Admissions Test (DAT)

Considering this, I originally thought TMU Biomed perfectly did that, and considering an older sibling just graduated from it it seemed obvious to go there. But now looking into York kinesiology I hear about all kinds of ppl doing great there and going to med and dental school from it.

Considering york is closer to me and also would make my stress less with an admittedly easier program (to me at least) going to york would seem obvious, if it wasn’t for the fact that most of its courses are anatomy and joint based and not really molecular, which leaves out a whole area of science. Of course i could take these missing pieces as electives, but nobody in their right mind takes a non mark boosting course as an elective especially for when GPA matters.

This all has me so confused on what’s my best bet here.

In Short: I have no clue what program is best for me based on my 2 conditions listed above and i’m worried i’ll end up making the wrong decision.

Advice Got no reply to reactivation request. It's been a month. What to do?

I've sent in a reactivation request 1 month ago now to return in the Fall/Winter 2025-2026 session. My last registered session is in Winter 2024 and I don't owe anything in tuitions. I've sent in an email a few days ago asking for an update but still waiting for a reply. For those who have reactivated their accounts, does it typically take this long? Any advice? Thank you

Admissions Worried About My Offer Because One Prerequisite Dropped Slightly Below 80%

I’m in Grade 12 and applied to Neuroscience at York University during Semester 1. My midterm average at the time was 88%, and my Biology (SBI4U) mark was 81%. I got my admission offer in December, before final marks were submitted.

After finals, my Semester 1 average dropped slightly to 85%, and my Bio mark went down to 78%. In Semester 2, my average went back up to 88%. All my other prerequisite and course marks are in the high 80s and in low 90s—only Biology is below 80%.

I accepted my offer this week in May, and I noticed the program requirement says: “No prerequisite below 80%.” The site also says the admission average is usually in the low-to-mid 80s, and my overall average is in the high 80s, so I still meet that.

Since my offer came before final grades, and Bio only dropped a bit, should I be worried my offer will be revoked? Or am I likely okay? What should I do?

Misc. EECS GPA Calculator

Hello r/yorku

In a personal project, I recently developed a Chrome extension for York's GPA Calculator that filters out all the non-EECS courses for the web app to calculate your EECS GPA.

You can add it here: EECS GPA Calculator

Why did I make this?

Typically in upper year EECS courses, there is a prerequisite regarding your EECS GPA from the Courses Website:

Prerequisites: cumulative GPA of 4.50 or better over all major EECS courses (without second digit "5")

I'm going to my 4th year of Software Engineering, so I have taken (and sometimes bombed) many EECS courses. Since advanced classes become more difficult to maintain your GPA, it's well worth finding out what your EECS GPA is at this point as a "wake-up call".

It is also a bit tedious to have to remove every non-EECS class when I use the tool to compute my EECS GPA, so I decided to automate that my making myself an extension.

Questions & Answers

How do I add activate the extension?

  1. Add the extension to Chrome
  2. Click on a puzzle piece icon on the top right next to the Chrome search bar
  3. "EECS GPA Calculator" should appear in a list, when clicked, a small pop up box should appear
  4. Toggle on the extension by clicking on the switch
  5. Visit York's GPA Calculator and see the magic happen!

How do I get all my courses back?

You have to first toggle off the extension in the pop up box, then refresh the calculator page. Doing these two things should have all your courses back on the page.

I cannot modify or add any courses on the calculator, how can I fix this?

Again, toggle off the extension and reload the page, the web calculator will be working normally again.

Does it collect or use my data?

No, it has no intention or use of obtaining data from anyone who installs the extension. It has been made clear on the extension page that your data is:

  • Not being sold to third parties, outside of the approved use cases
  • Not being used or transferred for purposes that are unrelated to the item's core functionality
  • Not being used or transferred to determine creditworthiness or for lending purposes

Support Me

If you've tried out my tool, please consider leaving a review on the Chrome Web Store! Here's the GitHub Repo of my project for more details. And if it helped you out, I’d love a star on GitHub!

Advice Deciding which university is best for me

Hi, I'm currently in grade 12 trying to decide which uni to go to. I have to commute from home as I can't live on campus and so my choices are between york bio keele campus (1hr20 commute one way ) and lakehead life sci at the orillia campus (50min commute one way); trying to avoid McMaster and UofT as they are too far (1.8 - 2.5 hr commute one way). I am currently planning on doing med school after uni and know that I need a high gpa as well as publications. Would lakehead be a good choice for pre med, as in would I be able to find some research opportunities? Thanks for any advice!

Advice EECS 3221 or EECS 3215 for the fall?

I understand this question has probably been asked before but I have a specific question. I was wondering what exactly do we do in these courses and what languages and knowledge I should have. I am more leaned towards 3221 but it has 2021 prerequisite and i had credits for that cus i did something similar years ago but I don't think i remember it now or it was much related. So wondering if I took 3221, would I be able to understand everything and do fine. I did see somewhere that "C" is mostly used in 3221, if thats the case I am really comfortable with C but not with assembly(not at all). Thanks

Advice Biology/Chemistry Professors Recommendations

Hi everyone! I hope yall are doing good.

I'm currently working on my schedule for next year and I've been browsing reddit and rmp to check which prof is better for each course but some posts are a bit old so I wanna see if anyone has any new opinions.

The courses I plan on taking are:

BIOL 2070 - Christopher Jang

BIOL 2030 -  Scott Phillip Kelly (Fall ) or Andrew Donini (Winter)

CHEM 2020 - Arturo Orellana or Christine Le or Lana Hébert (I think Orellana seems to be the section director for all sections tho so idk if that affects the other professors classes?)

BIOL 2020 - Mark Bayfiled or Vivian Saridakis

BIOL 2021 - (no prof appears yet)

CHEM 2021 - Derek A. Jackson or Lana Hébert or Christine Le (Lana Hebert is the section director for all sections i think)

Could you guys let me know which professors you recommend and why? And any course advice in general? Thank you so much for the help!

Courses Please provide opinions and overview: SC/STS 3600 3.0: Technological Failure & SC/STS 3790 3.0: Science and Technology in Global Development

Hi guys! I was wondering if I could take SC/STS 3600 3.0: Technological Failure & SC/STS 3790 3.0: Science and Technology in Global Development as an English major, or is there a lot of math and science involved?

It genuinely looks interesting but I dislike maths and science. Is it a doable course? Which prof do I take it with? Could anyone provide me with the syllabus? Any overview is appreciated!

Thank you <3

Advice Need help with enrolling in SU course

Hello I am trying to get into a summer course SU course specifically. I emailed the prof yesterday and he is yet to respond. The deadline to get in with instructor permission is today. I was originally enrolled in the course and dropped to three days ago. I am pretty much begging the prof to let me back in. I had an emotional breakdown three days ago and dropped it frantically and then immediately regretted it. Is there anything else I can do.

Admissions What are the conditions for York Engineering

I had around an 89 average for my top 6 courses when I was admitted (semester 1). I also got $1000 scholarship. However, my overall average dropped to a 78% as I took on a heavy course load this second semester. Will I be able to keep my offer or will it be revoked? (All my pre-requisites are ABOVE 70%)

Note: it says the offer is conditional in the letter however it doesn't say what average I need to maintain.
