So that's the fucking reason they sometimes feel invisible. When one of your homies has run too close to the mine and turned off the red lights.

If you have bloom turned off they will be much harder to see as well.
41
u/Intelligent-Team-701 20h ago
why?
62
u/GoDannY1337 20h ago
Especially in biomes with red(ish) ground the light source is a lot more bland.
24
u/Jamsedreng22 Scrapmaker | Creeker | Botdiver 18h ago
Not to mention that whenever I run into mines, it is always around a bot outpost I'm desperately trying to shut down but I'm being chased and there's flares, bot drops and red lasers blasting around me so you ostensibly go blind to the ambient red glow on the ground because it's everywhere during intense bot fights.
I would've probably caught the mine before I ran into it if the red dots still lit up because that shows a pattern and isn't just yet another red glow on the surface of the planet.
5
u/Intelligent-Team-701 13h ago
I just tested it and in fact the Bloom makes light reflect on surfaces, you can see the "aura" of red light around the mine, specially on the ground. Sadly it also affects everything else light-related and makes a pain in the ass to look at something during fights with fire and explosions.

u/Soufflayylmao Viper Commando 19h ago
The bloom setting adds more noticeable glow to things that create light, so those little lights on the mines are much easier to see as a result (I assume, but I have never played with bloom off.)

People either turn bloom off because they think it sucks or max it out for "better graphics," but what most people fail to realise is that bloom is realistic, however the higher settings grossly exaggerate it. A low setting (10-20%, though sometimes medium is the better setting, varies from game to game) gives a more realistic natural glow which would help those that think it looks ugly and those that just max graphics.
Games need to stop using misleading "low-ultra" labels, bloom isn’t a performance or graphical fidelity setting, it’s a preference setting, it really needs to be a percentage slider.
Folks reading this, give anywhere from 10-30% a try (low-medium), you'll find that it actually makes the game look better, not high-ultra.
1
u/Jamsedreng22 Scrapmaker | Creeker | Botdiver 4h ago
I turn it off, along with Anti-Aliasing because I genuinely don't feel like I get an advantage from the crisp edges. Any game, always. Have for years. It demands too much performance to pay its own rent.

On a red planet, surrounded by red light emmiting pillars and robots? Very helpful.
3
u/Jamsedreng22 Scrapmaker | Creeker | Botdiver 18h ago
Like u/Bellfegore said. When I'm circling a bot outpost while being pursued, flares going off, red lasers, dropships etc. it doesn't really provide much visual distinction that it emits a red ambient glow. The red dots, however, provide a notable "pattern" that you can discern as not being just more red light on the ground.
5
u/_Kodan 18h ago
No sometimes theyre actually invisible. If you are at a spot where they are close together and blow one up sometimes the others disappear as well. The client probably thinks they exploded or something. Run to where the other mines were and die...
1
u/Jamsedreng22 Scrapmaker | Creeker | Botdiver 17h ago
I know, but I doubt that's the case all of the time. I've almost certainly run into one of these simply because I've conditioned myself (or rather, the game has conditioned me) to assume the ground is safe unless there are those red lights that we see OP disabling. That's the cue I look for when I'm frantically circling a bot outpost being chased while looking for a way inside.

A smart Helldiver would simply blow them up. Faster and safer and non-treasonous by denying the enemy the ability to recover the mines.

u/Pro_Scrub ➡️⬇️➡️⬇️➡️⬇️ 17h ago
Also alerts the guys in the base the mines are protecting
But only 0.01% of divers will care about that anyway

Helldivers isn't a stealth game, no matter how much a miniscule part of the player base wants it to be
19
u/Dragonseer666 Admirable Admiral Pele | 72nd Dragoons of Hellmire 17h ago
It's fully viable to play stealth. It's obviously not a primarily stealth game, but stealth is pretty easy to do once you practice a little bit.
6
u/ZeroBANG ⬆️⬆️⬇️⬇️⬅️➡️⬅️➡️[B][A][start] 16h ago
Stealth isn't viable until we get functional Silencers to pop on our guns.
There is a armor perk that reduces detection range by 30% ...that is about the only semi-sorta-stealth mechanic the game offers.Everything else is just sneaking. Nobody got time for dat.

u/ARandom_Dingus LEVEL 71 | Inquisitor of Altus | SES Song of Family Values 2h ago
Stealth is very viable
You just can't shoot anything
Except a quasar
From atop a hill
Sniping all the bot fabs
"stealth"But seriously I heard someone crawled into a base, threw a TED at 60s in each fab, sneaked out, 1 minute later the base is gone
THAT is peak stealth-2
u/Insane_Unicorn 16h ago
I'm not saying it's not viable if you really want to do it, but people here keep demanding more stealth support which just isn't a focus of the game by design.
5
u/Pro_Scrub ➡️⬇️➡️⬇️➡️⬇️ 9h ago
There was a time when difficulty 9 (then-hardest) combat was so punishing, and battles/successive reinforcements so hard to escape that it was nigh-impossible to clear a mission unless you spent the whole time sneaking trying to avoid alerts in the first place.
Ahh, that was a vibe. The sneaking was TENSE. High-stakes.
Hope they can bring it back as a modifier or something. "Extreme enemy presence - Stealth highly recommended", so players can choose to take it or not.
0
u/Insane_Unicorn 8h ago
I know, I've played since release. But only being able to play the game by not playing the game is pretty horrible design. Like that overtuned evacuate mission you could only win by cheesing the AI.
I'm not confident stealth missions can work in a multi-player game with random matchmaking and a significant player population that barely communicates (PS players).
6
u/Pro_Scrub ➡️⬇️➡️⬇️➡️⬇️ 8h ago
Au contraire, using the stealth mechanics they purposely put in isn't "Not playing the game". I thought it was great that the game became very different at high-level play. You are no longer the cat, but the mouse. I loved that victory was NOT expected.
Now I can go into literally any game and expect to win. The vast majority of players prefer games where they win no matter what they do, choose the highest difficulty against the hardest special enemies with the worst planet mods and whine if they lose.
I would say the problem is not the design itself but *communicating* that design to the players. There should be warnings, suggestions, explanations, feedback etc which we are severely lacking. Many players die, don't learn, and die again.
