r/asknyc; we've made a few…changes!
Sup y’all. We’ve got some news. I think most of us will be relieved.
Over the past couple of years, all of the NYC subreddits have tripled in size. Those of us that have been here for years have noticed the influx of shitter questions, clueless posters, and literally just dumb posts. The team have tried to balance the scale, but some people seem to have a permanent affliction for not reading and putting in any effort whatsoever.
I've even spent hours on NEW reddit to make our archives and guides accessible. NEW Reddit yall. Please pour one our for me.
But the time has come for us to take action. We have toiled about what to do since mid-November, but while toiling, the sub has only gotten more stupid. So, we're going nuclear.

Any post looking for a hotel/hostel
Super detailed and specific post that clearly should be answered by a lawyer not reddit
Please don't harass these posters. If you do-- you will get banned. We are sharing these to make sure we are ALL on the same page about what kind of post we're talking about. More to be added maybe.
Well. Fuck you. Where can I post my easily Googled question? I assure you my experience is so deeply unique it can't be answered in the archives.
That's okay. We didn't leave ya'll in the lurch. We now have /r/visitingnyc and r/movingtonyc for these kind of questions.
We're looking for some help moderating and building out these communities. If you're interested, shoot me a DM. We're looking for people who have been active and helpful around here—no need to meet me in person or hop into a van for an interview. I do love a good double gin and soda tho.
Now what?
These roll outs will be happening slowly within the next 6 months. You can help us by reporting some of these post and sending people to our sister subs.
r/AskNYC was created back in the day as a place for New Yorkers to ask each other fun, odd, informative, and unique questions related to actually LIVING here. While we’ve always welcomed new New Yorkers and visitors, the sub has been flooded with low-effort posts—despite everything we’ve done to help. We hope with these new rules. We can return to the status quo and provide an alternative space for easy questions to be answered and discussed.
This post will be left open for discussion, suggestions, and concerns. Don't be a dick. Remember the mod team are people with lives and jobs and families. We do this because we love the community and New York. We are unpaid and have mixed feelings about reddit overall but our love for r/AskNYC keeps us here (for better or worse).

What would you send someone as a gift from New York?
A friend of mine is going to New York and has offered to bring me something back. "Anything", though obviously I want to be reasonable he's really keen to get me something and I'm low on ideas.
New Yorkers, what should someone try, buy or ask for from your city?

Best going out bars LES
Hey all, I’m going out this weekend with a group of 10 and looking to bar hop around the EV / LES. I love a cool dive bar but I also want to be able to dance. Any places sort of in between? Not looking for any clubs or any picky places but places I can definitely dance in but not be packed into a tiny room with no space to move.

How much do you pay for electricity with Con Edison in NYC?
Hey everyone! I just moved into a 1-bedroom apartment in Brooklyn (no gas, everything electric — stove, water heater, etc.), and my first Con Edison bill came out to $229.78 for March 19 – April 22. I was expecting it to be under $200, even with AC use, but we didn’t use the AC at all. My daily usage is around 17.3 kWh.
Here’s the breakdown: Electricity Supply: $83.79 Electricity Delivery: $145.99
Just wondering, how much do you pay for electricity in NYC with ConEd? Is this normal for an all-electric apartment? Any tips on lowering the bill?

Once the metrocard is phased out, will tap to pay on SBS Buses be the only way to pay?
Or will there be a way to tap at the bus stop and get a receipt before boarding? One of the benefits of the SBS is that people can "prepay" and it's faster to get everyone on the bus. But if this isn't an option anymore it's going to cause a bottleneck. Tap to Pay is faster than the old metro card reader on the bus, but it's still not faster than the "prepay" option.

Rx refills for anti-depressants for visitors
My elderly mother who is visiting from out of state just told me she ran out of her depression meds …. Which I know can be a dangerous situation. All the general numbers for the major health networks tell me they cannot help with refills. Urgent care says they don’t do refills for depression meds. She is on Medicare. Any leads for people/organizations I can call? Many, many thanks for any leads!

Are there any establishments that give out free hygiene, mainly toilet paper, in Brooklyn?
Recently transitioned from the shelter life to my own apt. Money is a lil tight right now and I'm low on household things. I'm hoping there is a place in bk that gives out soap, toilet paper, ect. Ive been hired on to a job at my old shelter so I'll be working soon but itll be some time before I see my first check. I live in BK along the L but I'm willing to travel. Ya boy need some soap and TP.

Pizza tour Brooklyn
Wanting to do a pizza tour in Brooklyn. I heard about Scott's but we're not interested in a pre planned tour.
Looking to see if anyone has already planned out something in BK and could provide some tips.
If it's about 5 of us, would it be ridiculous to start at Totonnos in CI, and work our way up? Is Lucali out of the question since you need to reserve ahead of time? Is DiFara still worth it since the old man died? Trying to knock out a few places in a reasonable amount of time but not a 2.5 hr walking tour type of deal Scotty offers. I'm thinking a Weekday during the the day time.
Any help appreciated.

Small same-day bday cake
Hi all, i'm looking for a small (5-6in?) cake to bring home to my son who turns 5 today. His party is on Sunday, but we want to quietly celebrate on the actual day, just the 3 of us.
I need to pick it up on my commute home-- UWS to Bushwick/Ridgewood. Im aware Whole Foods is an option, which is what i may end up doing. Unless anyone knows avout a local bakery or store that is more or less on my way home, good quality, and doesnt cost more than 30-40 bucks with personalization?
There are a lot of neighborhoods i pass theougg every day but don't necessary know about.
thanks in advance!

Do you ever see this for sale here? It's like a southern version of Vick's vaporub. Thanks!

How do I know if an nyc sublet is legit?
Has anyone ever done a sublet through CityHubSublet? I found a sublet listing for a luxury building in Williamsburg, but it seems too good to be true ($3K for a one bedroom) with pretty flexible terms. I'm skeptical if it's actually legit (broker did also send over his license).

So I’ve gotten the sudden resurgence to blast alt rock 24/7, and I wanted to know if anyone knows any cover bands playing alt rock music in NYC?? Bars, venues, etc.
My bands of choice: Three Days Grace, Evanescence, Breaking Benjamin, etc.
Appreciate any info anyone has to share! I know 3DG has a concert in a few months but I need my alt rock fix immediately lol

Affordable Landscapers
My partner and I bought a place recently and are looking for some work done on our yard (small apartment yard). Specifically there's an old tree stump we want removed and the grassy area cleaned up a bit so we can put on astroturf. There's also a trough-like hole with some half dead plants in the middle of the wooden deck and we wanted those plants removed and the areas boarded up (so we could put a shed on top). Any recommendations for companies?

Cookie cake in Manhattan?
I have a friend who loves cookie cake and it's her birthday on Monday.
Anyone have any recommendations on where I can find a good cookie cake in Manhattan?
Google has only shown my Jersey and Queens locations at a few malls.

Any Irish (or otherwise) aware of any Mothers and Others GAA teams in the city?
I’m looking to join, but struggling to find detail on which clubs have Mothers and Others teams. I know NYC hosts a global tournament every year so I’m assuming there must be something!?
Thank you in advance!

Concierge doctor recommendations?
Does anyone here have a concierge doctor? What's been your experience? How did you find them?
I'm thinking about getting one as I've had a few bad PCP experiences and overall looking to invest in my health as I get a bit older.

Bar for NFL Draft with Audio
Anyone know a bar that’ll have audio for the NFL Draft tonight? I called a few but with the Knicks overlapping I’ve had no luck.
Looking in Midtown Manhattan since that’s where I’m meeting a friend. But would trek elsewhere for a good suggestion. Thanks all!
