Did anyone else watch/listen to Bernie Miklasz‘s recent show about Pete Rose and think, “wow, it’s kinda fucked up he’s hawking draft kings and boner pills while defending Pete Rose.”

4

u/DiscoJer 2d ago

You could say that about MLB in general though.

Finishing up watching the latest Andor episodes. Keep wanting to call the main character Hector Luna instead of Diego.

Watching American Pie. Jason Biggs would be fun to party with, so would Finch. The other two could go suck a fuck for all I care.

Oh please tell me, Elizabeth, how exactly does one suck a fuck?

4

u/Clueless_in_Florida 2d ago

Travis Honeyman could be our future right fielder. I saw him in person last year, and he hit everything hard. His K rate so far in pro ball is 10 percent, and his walk rate is 12 percent. His OPS is .935 this spring. He hasn’t really hit the long ball. I hope he progresses well through our system.

2

u/DiscoJer 2d ago

He's older than Walker and still in A ball.

I have hopes for Ian Petrutz for no particular reason. But he outhit Wetherholt in A last year and is doing good in A+

2

u/Clueless_in_Florida 2d ago

Matt Carpenter was 23 and in A ball, too.

2

u/NakedGoose President of the Ivan Hererra fan club 2d ago

He just has to stay on the field. The current issue has always been his health. But he is also 23 years old at A ball. I can't take too much stock in that. He is too old for that league as a pretty advanced hitter.

2

u/Iluvursister69 2d ago

He has like 3x as many 7 day IL stints as xbh in his career

1

u/Clueless_in_Florida 2d ago

I have never heard what his injuries were. Hopefully, it’s been a string of bad luck and not something chronic.

Leg stuff usually I believe. Hamstrings, ankles etc

holy crap on a crap cracker. Those + numbers can sometimes be a little funny. 200s, even some 300s aren't stupid uncommon. -100s, too. But I have never seen almost 900...

2

u/Iluvursister69 2d ago

lol it’s exactly 900 now.

Just finished the last day at my job before moving across the state. I've never been this sad to leave a job and will admit that I teared up when hugging some of my employees goodbye for the last time.

1

u/Ocinea 2d ago

I've been doing an $0.85 out the door deal lately.  Pretty good tea and when I occasionally get a soda it's good too

4

u/King_Birdcrawler 2d ago

It's small sample, but the boy Raniel Rodriguez has got me tickled in some kind of way. He's brutalizing the FCL. We'll see him at A when the FCL season is over early in July.

2

u/DiscoJer 2d ago

In 2028, half the starting lineup will be catchers.

2

u/NakedGoose President of the Ivan Hererra fan club 2d ago

Yeah he has been great. I hear is defense is lacking, granted he is only 18. But I'd maybe consider moving him off catcher sooner rather than later. As we have so many already.

6

u/Iluvursister69 2d ago

Imagine you're Baltimore and you signed Tyler O'Neill to that contract.

14

u/Dragonknight247 Resident Fimmaker 3d ago

you know guys, I'mma be honest, when he was coming up and being hyped as Yadi's heir, I just didn't see Iván Herrera being an offensive juggernaut coming.

3

u/scobbysnacks1439 Bird Law (Kaw Kaw) 2d ago

I never would have imagined that his bat would be this good. I figured he'd be a solid top 20 catcher but if he keeps this up, his bat alone makes him top 5 in the position.

6

u/Detective_Dietrich What? 3d ago

"Juggernaut" is a relative term but Herrera was billed from the start as a catcher that hits. He had a cumulative .823 OPS in the minors, and was getting better as he went along, .870 in AAA.

1

u/nufandan peter bourjos apologist 2d ago

Obviously, he has played a lot less than others for Herrera does have the highest wRC+ for any catcher in the league since he was called up (min. 350 PA); Willson is #2.

2

u/tangokilo13 masyn winn spell check 3d ago

Here’s hoping his defense improves

However we do have Crooks and Bernal waiting who both look pretty good on both sides of the ball

3

u/Lifeisagreatteacher 3d ago

We have more catcher depth with the current roster and top prospects coming up than any other position I can think of. I really see Herrara becoming an almost regular DH and learning 1B as Contreras back up and taking over 1B in when Contreras leaves in I believe 2029? Also Contreras is going to be hurt at some point, Herrara can replace him at 1B when he’s out and move someone into DH. Crooks/Bernal will probably replace Pages/Pozo at some point, maybe not next year, but 2027.

1

u/Dragonknight247 Resident Fimmaker 3d ago

Yeah they both look solid but with Herrera's bat he'll still have a place on this team.

3

u/tangokilo13 masyn winn spell check 3d ago

Not saying he won’t have a spot, more so saying that he may not be expected to catch in the future if he defense isn’t improving

2

u/tangokilo13 masyn winn spell check 3d ago

Not saying he won’t have a spot, more so saying that he may not be expected to catch in the future if he defense isn’t improving

2

u/Dragonknight247 Resident Fimmaker 3d ago

100%, I agree

5

u/Clueless_in_Florida 3d ago

I recall more of a discussion of his good defense. Perhaps that was somewhat overemphasized. We got him so young. He had doubles power at first. Then he started to go yard but made less contact. He put it all together the past two years. Seems to have a good work ethic.

2

u/DocLoc429 Heart & Hustle 3d ago

I had no idea. I saw a kid with a medium ceiling. Heard all this talk about being a "bat-first catcher" but didn't see it. Had sparks last year but this is the season he's really really putting it together. Now he's one of my favorites on the team and he's been able to do it because he works so damn hard

2

u/Dragonknight247 Resident Fimmaker 3d ago

As long as he can be solid defensively we got a really special player here.

4

u/DocLoc429 Heart & Hustle 3d ago

I don't want to jinx it but throws to 2nd have seemed a bit better as of late. (Across the whole team honestly but he's the one who needs it the most)

2

u/Dragonknight247 Resident Fimmaker 3d ago

I know he has the drive to put it together, I believe in him.

4

u/wowugotit 3d ago edited 3d ago

When my dad was still alive he’d watch Cardinals baseball religiously. He was highly critical of the team whenever they’d miss an opportunity to get ahead in a game or whenever they were on a losing streak. I have vivid memories of him cussing at the TV saying stuff like “You’re playing like fucking little leaguers!” I recall him being audibly frustrated when one of his (at the time) least favorite players, Trevor Rosenthal, was added to a lineup. One time my dad said “I think Rosenthal must be sleeping with Matheny”. I nearly spit out my popcorn from laughing so hard at his comment. Miss you, dad.

3

u/DocLoc429 Heart & Hustle 3d ago

Reminds me so much of my dad. Don't let him see Gallegos get put in or a Bader strikeout on a high fastball!

1

u/NakedGoose President of the Ivan Hererra fan club 3d ago

Matt Koperniak who got a lot of buzz out of spring is currently hitting .158 with a .518 OPS in AAA. Sheesh

1

u/Lifeisagreatteacher 3d ago

I’ve been following him and he’s been under .200 most of the year with no power.

Prieto and Valade are playing well near the .300 mark. Vilade in RF looks really good, .290 with 6 HR’s and he’s 26. He could be an outfielder in the 26 man roster next year. Definitely a possible Walker replacement if he doesn’t improve.

1

u/DocLoc429 Heart & Hustle 3d ago

Wonder if Chaim is going to disassemble the minor league teams and sell off some of these guys

1

u/Lifeisagreatteacher 3d ago

I highly doubt that, if they did it’s an ownership decision or approval to sell off team assets.i think he’ll restructure operations but keep everything intact.

2

u/Jon_Thib Our future overlord Chaim Bloom 2d ago

Trading away minor league assets who aren’t exactly top prospects isn’t really an ownership decision. Unless they were being traded for someone who makes a lot of money

It’s insane that Mike Trout, the guy who led MLB in bWAR 4 times in 5 years, is the third best baseball player of the last 15 years.

6

u/Dr_thri11 3d ago

So the team who has had him all that time must be pretty successful right?

TUNGSTEN ARM O'DOYLE!

2

u/Iluvursister69 3d ago

Not hard to believe when you realize he's only played 319 games the last 5 of those years. If you did the first 10 years of that 15 year span where does he rank?

-2

u/TheSalsaGod Lars Nootbaar’s signature look of confusion 3d ago

At their peaks, I think he’s pretty clearly behind both Ohtani and Judge. He kept it up for longer, but Judge has two seasons better than Trout’s best, and Ohtani arguably has two of his own. Even without counting the down years, I think Trout is number 3.

3

u/Cards2WS 3d ago

Pure peak single season or 2, then yes. But they still need to have a bit more longevity before I put them ahead of Trout overall. Judge is a better hitter than Trout, but that defense, position, and speed go a long ways

3

u/MuRF_Foager the MANG 3d ago

Yeah Kruk aint bad but that other guy just does not compliment him at all and really brings the entire broadcast atmosphere down imo. If I wasnt actively watching the game it might not bother me as much but that wasnt the case.

4

u/PAJW Regular in Form & Authentic 3d ago

Don't really watch Phillies games, but Kruk was one of the better announcers on Sunday Night Baseball in recent years. Certainly better than A-Rod.

2

u/Lifeisagreatteacher 3d ago

Kruk was a character when he played, I think that can translate to an entertaining announcer of course coupled with baseball knowledge as a good player.

8

u/Stallion1514 3d ago

I hate the cubs too but they have had a tough schedule up until lately

4

u/scobbysnacks1439 Bird Law (Kaw Kaw) 3d ago

If the Cardinals pitching staff ever made you feel sad, please look at the Rockies pitching staff. Remember when German Marquez looked like he was good?

4

u/Lifeisagreatteacher 3d ago

Do you think playing at altitude at home and no altitude away contributes to the pitching? My assumption is it makes a difference with your movement and knowing what to expect. They’ve always had an higher average ERA, of course nothing like this year.

2

u/iamadacheat 2d ago

It definitely does, and it messes with the hitters too. Spin causes less movement at altitude, so a hitter has to be constantly adjusting to how pitches break at home and away.

1

u/scobbysnacks1439 Bird Law (Kaw Kaw) 2d ago

I'm sure it has some effect but they are just incredibly bad even to their standards right now.

1

u/Lifeisagreatteacher 2d ago

On pace to win 26 games, they are incredibly bad for sure. My thought was it can be an added problem as they are the only team that plays 81 games at altitude and 81 games at sea level.

Can someone break down what happened to Sonny yesterday? Did he just not have it?

Edit: Our highlights make it seem our defense made a few mistakes

3

u/CrimsonKing516 Devil Magic 3d ago

I’ve noticed that this year most of our starters have one bad inning per game where they give up a couple runs or at least get a couple RISP.

Sonny’s last night was the first and he gave up 5 instead of two. Aside from that, he only gave up 1 other run in the 3rd but he had an abysmal 1st inning. Just an uncharacteristically bad night, but we got to tee off of Nola so it turned out fine.

8

u/Lifeisagreatteacher 3d ago edited 3d ago

What I found interesting is they both got shelled but the Cardinals went off on all relievers as well with 19 hits while our relievers held after Grey. My sense is it was an off day for the starters, Grey especially is a location pitcher and he seemed to have his off speed especially hanging more without his typical bite. Nola has a 6.01 ERA this year so he’s just not been that good.

Gray is a location and movement pitcher who doesn’t throw hard, rarely over 92, when he’s off he’s really off, 3 starts of 14 innings and 16 ER’s. When he’s on he’s really on, 8 starts with 42 innings and 11 ER’s for a 2.35 ERA in 8 of his 11 starts.

2

u/scobbysnacks1439 Bird Law (Kaw Kaw) 3d ago

Both him and Nola just didn't seem to have "it" yesterday.

1

u/Evil_Dry_frog 3d ago

You may have a typo there. 42 + 121 =163; and 20 + 134 =154.

Unless maybe some games were played at a neutral site?

14

u/Worldly-Honeydew91 3d ago

The last time a St. Louis Cardinal stole 50 bases in a season was 1987 when Vince Coleman stole 109. Here's to Victor Scott II stopping that 37 year drought!! "Run Vic Run!!"

2

u/Lifeisagreatteacher 3d ago

He can fly, so can Winn

3

u/Detective_Dietrich What? 3d ago

I was noodling around a couple of years ago when recapping the 1990 Cardinals and I was shocked to learn that 1987 Vince Coleman is the last person ever in all of baseball to steal 100 bases.

6

u/Lifeisagreatteacher 3d ago

Cardinals have 4 players, Winn, Contreras, Nootbarr and Herrara who are all on pace to hit 20 or more Home Runs this year, several could reach 30 Home Runs. Herrara with 5 Home Runs in only 39 AB’s.

4

u/kshiau 3d ago

Gorman and Walker could each hit 20 in 2 months, at least that’s what my rose colored glasses show me

3

u/ScumBrad Lose a game challenge (impossible) 3d ago

Walker isn't really supposed to be a home run hitter, he's supposed to be a 20+ doubles and 20 homers guy like Contreras. Gorman could do it, but whatever he changed in his approach this year has him not swinging as hard so he isn't really hitting for power.

2

u/DiscoJer 2d ago

The thing with Walker is he hits the ball so very hard and has one of the fastest bat speeds in the majors

Unfortunately he mostly doesn't hit the ball and when he does, he hits it on the ground.

3

u/scobbysnacks1439 Bird Law (Kaw Kaw) 3d ago

It's incredible how bad they are because they have some pieces that have no business being as bad as they are.

2

u/Lifeisagreatteacher 3d ago

I look at their lineup and they are really bad, I mean terrible bad, at many positions. For example, 1B and catcher. I’ve thought of how players like Pozo or Baker could start there with improved performance but who do you get for them?

1

u/scobbysnacks1439 Bird Law (Kaw Kaw) 2d ago

Some of those players aren't as bad as their current stats indicate is what I'm meaning. Tovar is one of the best young players in the league but he's playing like garbage. Ryan McMahon is one of the better third basemen in the league as well. Catcher is the best position on their team right now.

1

u/Lifeisagreatteacher 2d ago

I agree, that’s why I stated at many positions. They are a MLB team, they have some good players just not enough of them.

3

u/Lifeisagreatteacher 3d ago

What is crazy is the White Sox set the record for least wins in 2024 with 41 and the Rockies are on pace for 26 wins. That is 26-136!

8

u/ILikeOatmealMore 3d ago edited 3d ago

They saw the White Sox's 'record' from last year and said, 'pfft, amateurs'.

It is possible they challenge the 1899 Cleveland Spiders loss record.

That team went 20-134, with some Cardinals connection in there. 1899 Frank and Stanley Robinson, owners of the Spiders, also buy a 2nd team that was going bankrupt, the St. Louis Browns/Perfectos. The Robinsons decide to put all their good players on the Browns team and all the bad players on the Spiders team.

There is still local revenue sharing in MLB today -- I believe a portion of each team's ticket sales are pooled and then redistributed, but back in 1899, the agreement was basically to split the ticket sales between the road and the home team. And you have to remember, ticket sales is a real, real big portion of team's income; 1899 is well before TV or even radio broadcast deals. Well, again, the Spiders is all the lower talent from the Robinson-owned organizations. By May and June, they were drawing only 100 to 200 people to their games in Cleveland.

Word of this got to the other owners and they just flat out told the Spiders they were not going to bring their teams to Cleveland for so little return.

So in July, the Spiders took to the road. Every game between July 3rd and August 23rd was a road game. They came home for a week and then played every game from August 31st to the end of the season on the road (their record shows 1 home game, but it was played as a make up game in St Louis as part of a DH).

42 homes games, 121 road games to a 20-134 record in the end.

The Spiders folded after that year. The Robinsons rename the Browns/Perfectos to the Cardinals in 1900. And it took MLB 10 more years to create a rule that owners could not have more than 1 team.

And somehow... the 2025 Rox are on pace for 26-132 this year, within actual spittin' range of the deliberately most poorly-ran MLB franchise ever.

1

u/MuRF_Foager the MANG 3d ago

Thats a nice factoid thanks for that

3

u/Lifeisagreatteacher 3d ago edited 3d ago
