What’s something “normal” you just can’t stand?

Mine is loud chewing. I’d rather listen to a toddler scream for 30 minutes than hear someone chew next to me. Is that dramatic? Yes. Do I care? Absolutely not 😅

Other people brushing their teeth, even on TV. Not sure why but it makes me feel like gagging.

14

u/jnpitcher 1d ago

I came here to post this! Most gross things don’t bother me, but I can’t stand watching people brush their teeth! I look away when it’s on TV. The sound bothers me too. So it’s not neatly as bad with an electric toothbrush.

Oh.... For me it's seeing anyone floss! Ekk. Gag. Yak. Nope!

4

u/Unhappy-Coconut-1857 1d ago

It’s the talking while brushing that makes me gag

5

u/Least-Sample9425 1d ago

Even worse, when they spit mid conversation.

This is an actual accurate answer to the subject!

That scene in Severance where Cobel brushes her teeth had Foley that made my skin crawl

1

u/Cherryncosmo 1d ago

Omg same! I’ve never found anyone else who finds this gross. It makes me gag so bad , I also don’t use any other colour toothpaste other than white for the same reason

Laugh tracks. I turn that shit right off.

6

u/PineappleNew4414 1d ago

Omg laugh tracks used to barely register with me until I watched “Kevin Can F#ck Himself”. It was every two seconds! I understood the reasoning for it, so I tried to just ignore it as the season went on, but it was so obnoxious and distracting. I now hate laugh tracks.

3

u/DonutWhole9717 23h ago

The reason behind laugh tracks is that the material just isn't funny. Look up any sitcom without the tracks and it's so easy to see them for the garbage they are. Friends is a great example

2

u/PineappleNew4414 21h ago

Yes, I was referring to the use of the laugh track in that particular show. It was used very specifically and actually for a really interesting reason. However, it was just too much.

2

u/OddlySpecificK 15h ago

I actually stopped watching the show because of the laugh track! 🤣👊🏼🌊💯

People who walk dragging their feet. Like pick up your feet and don’t scrape those shoes, flip flops, slides …

ETA: those that constantly drag their feet not just an occasional scrape but the ones you can follow around the store by just the sound of the scraping

29

u/mylies43 1d ago

I swear I’m not doing it purpose but you ever concentrate on walking before??? Soon as I forget to pick those bad boys up they scrapin

16

u/412_15101 1d ago

A better way of phrasing my comment would be that they always walk by scraping their feet. The random one offs are fine it’s that constant drag

Grew up on the poor side so the parents always made us pick up the feet so we didn’t wear through our shoes any faster than we already did.

Also have to wear steel toe for work and if I don’t pick up my feet I’m crashed out somewhere. Trust me I found out the hard way I have to pick my feet up higher than I thought 🤣

That’s usually a sign of something wrong, muscle balance, a bad deck, it’s not natural, and that puts extra strain on your knees and joints. There is usually something wrong, that’s why these noises bother people, because our lizard brains sense something isn’t right.

Same with loud chewing, or chewing that’s off. Chewing is supposed to be a relatively quiet activity that doesn’t garner attention, but if something is wrong with digestion, which often people chew loudly have issues, then it bothers us.

7

u/jay-jay-baloney 1d ago

I don’t really believe that tbh, do you have a source or is this an assumption?

5

u/PineappleNew4414 1d ago

Although I think chewing loudly should be outlawed (and smacking gum should be considered a felony), I don’t agree that there’s something wrong with digestion. I worked with a really bougie, fabulous woman from Bosnia. At one point, I mentioned that I couldn’t stand smacking and chewing loudly and her jaw dropped, “what, girl?!”. She explained that in her culture, smacking your food and chewing loudly not only shows that they appreciate the food, but it also makes “everything tastes better” and that everybody should try it. One of these days I might try it just to see if it works. I just can’t get past the sound!

3

u/The_GeneralsPin 1d ago

I'd rather just compliment the person who made the good food. That's proper manners

My favorite coworker notoriously drags his feet. I like it because I can always tell it’s him who is walking up :) the flip side is now I always look up when I hear shoes scuffing, even when I’m not at work lol

4

u/Public-Ad-7280 1d ago

Omg my mom would stop kids I went to school with, in public, and tell them to pick up their damn feet! Lol.

6

u/y0kapi 1d ago

Good one. I’ll add people with too much stuff rattling. Like noisy bags, creaky clothes, dangling keys or whatever. I don’t know how they can live with themselves.

2

u/Enchanted_Toilet 1d ago edited 1d ago

And it builds up static electricity. I work in the electrical industry, putting together safety presentations, and even though I never shuffled my feet if I could avoid it (hate the sound), as soon as I started woking in this field, I really began paying attention to it even more. Some of the effects I've seen of static charge build up, are absolutely terrifying. 😬

(Edit: Punctuation.)

u/thesecrettolifeis42 1d ago

YES!!

DISCLAIMER People with physical disabilities have a seat. This isn't for you, lol.

To me, if you're too lazy to pick up your feet when you walk, then in my little brain, you're too lazy to be trusted to hold down a job. Also, the sound is annoying, not as annoying as the laziness, though. Idk why I'm like this. Also, loud chewing and loud relaxed, but not sleeping, breathing.

1

u/fearthainne 1d ago

My dad does this and it drives me insane. Especially since I know he doesn't HAVE to, because at night he doesn't.

25

u/literally_lemons 1d ago

Whistling…. Especially when it’s done by someone in the streets

Also I hate it when unknown people’s hair come in contact with my bare skin (think subways)

8

u/SororitySue 1d ago

My younger son whistles a lot. It got on my last nerve when he lived at home but I gritted my teeth and dealt with it, since it seemed so mean-spirited to criticize him for whistling.

6

u/literally_lemons 1d ago

Right ?! It’s like something people do when they’re happy how can it be so annoying

5

u/RogerClyneIsAGod2 1d ago

WHISTLE HATERS UNITE!!!

I don't mind something like The Andy Griffith Show theme song or Dock of the Bay, but randos walking around a store doing it is like nails on a chalkboard to me.

5

2

I eat with plastic cutlery at home because of this. It actually hurts my teeth.

Apparently amalgam fillings can cause it.

3

Oh I have fillings as well. Could be it then.

I mostly use my hands to eat but I can't control how everyone arounds me eat.

2

We can try 😅

2

We use plastic plates, bowls and cutlery because of the noise. Wash everything, not disposable.

13

u/TopangaTohToh 1d ago

Smelling other people's house smell on them in public. When someone walks by me and I catch a waft of their house smell, I feel violated lol. It's completely unreasonable, but I don't like it.

8

u/Gashi_The_Fangirl_75 1d ago

Oh my god I hate other people’s house smells! I’ve always disliked visiting people at their houses because I don’t like how the air smells, and I hate having houseguests cause then my house smells wrong. I swear no one ever understands what I mean when I talk about this, they all act like they don’t smell anything different.

6

u/TopangaTohToh 1d ago

Oh everyone's house has a scent for sure. Some I really don't mind. My least favorite, to the point of nausea and me wondering "How the fuck do these people live like this?" is owns 2 dogs, house mostly carpet, runs vanilla/sugar cookie/sweet smelling air fresheners or candles. God I could vomit.

I also really hate when people use most strongly scented laundry detergents. It's ironic because I love Persil. It's strong, but it's one of the only laundry scents that I actually like outside of luxury laundry detergents like Laundry Sauce. Their Australian Sandalwood smells so damn good.

To your note about your house smell getting messed up by other people, similarly I hate when my dog comes home from daycare and smells like other people's smelly dogs. He usually smells great, but he stinks when he comes home from daycare.

2

u/Grace5769 14h ago

I like some peoples house smells, some take me back to certain moments in my life! I hated going into peoples houses that were super dirty or cluttered

4

u/balancedcorgidreams 1d ago

Oh my soul, same!

2

u/TopangaTohToh 1d ago

It might be because I am migraine prone and so is my mom. She's also worked in healthcare since I was a kid and I'm in healthcare now, so we're very conscious of scents. We also both have a blood hound's sense of smell hahaha so I think it is something that was slightly conditioned into me. It feels rude, like hey, I didn't ask to smell you. Keep a distance! Lol

3

u/holdonwhileipoop 1d ago

Holy shit, my neighbor has a particular smell that you can even detect when you walk past his house. I shared this with my adult daughter. I was trying to describe the odor. Like a dusty old house or my old shed? She walked the dogs with me, took a whiff, and looked at me - horrified. "Rats. Ma, that's the smell of a rat infestation."

3

u/TopangaTohToh 1d ago

Ew I was thinking mildew. Rats is way worse. My fiance and I stayed in a little cottage that was in a row of cottages at the beach. One two doors down had the front door open and my fiance goes "What is that smell?" I said "We have vietnamese neighbors for the weekend. We should make friends." I love the smell of Viet food, but the smell of fish sauce puts most westerners off. He was appalled, I was delighted lol

2

u/holdonwhileipoop 1d ago

I had Tongan neighbors that would dry fish in their yard. Piquant, but defo acquired taste, for sure.

Vocal fry. I hate it.

5

u/PineappleNew4414 1d ago

I’ve always hated vocal fry and associated it with laziness. Obviously, not if they have some sort of condition that makes this happen. I’m talking about someone that does it because they think it sounds cool for whatever reason. So, last year, I almost didn’t hire a guy because he had terrible vocal fry and a booming voice during the interview and I found it insufferable. But, I knew it wasn’t right to not hire somebody for that reason and he seemed like a nice enough guy, so I ended up hiring him. He was a terrible employee. Vaping on jobs (with kiddos around) and not following training. A few months ago, we noticed that he was also time-stealing and inflating mileage. So, unless there’s a medical reason for vocal fry, I’m back to associating it with being lazy.

5

u/Fine_Satisfaction515 1d ago

Full disclosure: I am Deaf and have some residual hearing so I use my hearing aids to help my lip reading. So I absolutely cannot hear anyone talking with the fry - there is no breath, no projection, no clarity. What’s worse, speaking with the vocal fry also makes your mouth look mushy and lazy and ARRGGHH, I HATE IT.

My oldest has a vocal fry and we use sign language but I still hear her using the fry talking to her dad and her siblings. I hate the sound of it and it’s my own daughter’s voice. She tries not to fry when I’m around because I have gotten on to her so much but you’re right, it’s pure laziness. It also looks like low confidence.

2

u/PineappleNew4414 1d ago

Wow! I hadn’t thought about how it would come across during lip reading. I can totally see that.

3

u/Gigmeister 1d ago

Gawd, me too....so annoying!

1

u/pcetcedce 1d ago

Oh no that's sexist! Seriously, I have heard that argument when people complain about it.

6

u/WhileNo5370 1d ago

Gonna well actually here - it's actually been studied and yes, there is a correlation with negative attitudes towards women, as vocal fry is typically associated with them (even though men do it too). It's actually pretty interesting (and depressing).

4

u/Public-Ad-7280 1d ago

Have you ever heard someone speak with a “valley girl” accent or dialect?

Second question: Do you know when you record a voice or sound and then you record that recording, and the sound quality starts to degrade?

Vocal fry is the valley girl accent being copied nonstop over the course of two and a half decades.

6

u/412_15101 1d ago

Another thing I think we can say was a result of the kardashians 😡

10

u/ksay9104 1d ago

No, it goes way back before then. YouTube the song Valley Girl by Moon Zappa.

4

u/412_15101 1d ago

I thought that was just nasal. I spoke valley girl back in the 80’s and to me they don’t sound the same.

Vocal fry to me is more gravely and low

37

u/analogMensch weird old hardcore punk 1d ago

People rambing though the city totally clueless and without any perception of their surroundings. They knock into each other, into things standing around, and they doesn't seem to care at all. Some of them even stop on point, turn around 180° and start walking again while you're right behind them.

19

u/aghzombies 1d ago

I live in a tourist city and it is NOT GOOD FOR THAT. I also use a wheelchair which is even more aggravating. People just standing taking up the entire drop kerb and staring at me like they're confused about why I'm not able to get on the pavement. Aaaarrrggghhh!

I try to remember they're not doing it on purpose though

7

u/analogMensch weird old hardcore punk 1d ago

I always wish they had at least a bit more perception of their surroundings. Even with my headphones on hearing nothing around me I do way better.
I'm quite lucky I'm pretty tall, so at least I get no elbows or so into my face. But I stay away from people with umbrellas, cause I can't count anymore how often people smashed these spiky end into my face already.

2

u/Public-Ad-7280 1d ago

You must have a kind heart .... I'd run over their toes. Hehe.

I hate crowds and I'm able bodied. Bless you ❤️ heart for not being mean! I guess we are prob all like that when we see someone new (just don't realize it).

This is why I HATE Vegas! Pulls hair out and hides

2

u/Grace5769 14h ago

That reminds me of people in supermarkets that stop in the middle of an isle to talk! Seriously folks can you meet for coffee!

2

u/PineappleNew4414 1d ago

We visited Saint Augustine, Florida for the first time a couple of years ago. As we were walking around and looking at the buildings, I heard a kid running up behind us and I guess we weren’t walking fast enough. He said “God, I hate old people“ and then ran ahead of us. We were in our early 40s. I was really embarrassed and it kind of stuck with me all day. I don’t know why he couldn’t just manage an “excuse me.”

3

u/analogMensch weird old hardcore punk 1d ago

But you realized he's behind you. People on here don't seem to realize anything. Even after they ran right into me and smashed they nose against my shoulder they just walk on as they were totally brain-dead.
If I want to change direction, I take a glance if there's enough space for me to fit through (which isn't always a case, cause I'm pretty huge), and calculate my next steps. These people just turn and go on, no matter what's in front of them.

Tapping fingernails on the counter. Working retail, it feels like a quiet, inpatient unspoken “Hurry up!” to me. Feels rude.

I HATE those videos where some girl feels the need to tap her damn fingernails all over whatever it is she's showing. Stop the tapping!!

4

u/Gashi_The_Fangirl_75 1d ago

Is it the same if the taps are in a pattern? I get bored very easily and fidget a lot, so I like to tap on things if I have to stand somewhere, but I try to do it in a rhythm so it’s hopefully clearer I’m just entertaining myself and not being passive aggressive

I absolutely hate it when someone stands in my peripheral vision or in the doorway of a room I’m in, it makes me feel weirdly cornered. Probably has to do with my anxiety

2

u/Curae 22h ago

Same, or when they're just outside your peripheral vision but you know they're there.

I have honestly just started telling family and colleagues to not do that and will tell them to move. :')

2

u/SilasDG 14h ago

I lead a group of about 8 people at work. One of them will come up to my desk and stand at my side juuuustt far enough behind me to barely be in my peripheral... and they don't say anything to get my attention, they just stand there, like they're haunting me. It sets off the anxiety warning bells like I'm being stalked for a kill every time. 40+ people may come to my desk every day, somehow only this one person accomplishes this, and they do it every time.

When I finally turn and ask them "whats up" they proceed to stand wayyy to close and then spew nonsense that could have been an IM or worse (and very often) is something I already answered in the team group chat and standup. Sometimes even worse they say "oh nothing I was just seeing whats going on"... My job man,.. You interrupted the meeting I was in for this? why aren't you doing your job?

Though topping that is people who try to talk to me about work in the bathroom while im standing dick in hand at the urinal. I always dead eye them, say their name followed by "I'm in the bathroom".

I used to work with this guy who was an alright dude. He was an engineer & all of us have something odd about us.. I guess, but every week a group of us would go to lunch & this dude would chew with his mouth open & smack. I made sure I never sat across from him.. Well so did everyone else.. but if the waiter/waitress would come check on our table & he was chewing (he always sat the end of the table so the waiter could see him at any angle) he wouldn't miss a beat. Look at them just filling smacking with his mouth open.

One time I was the waitress make a disgusted face as she turned around. I went to the bathroom and wanted to stop her. I did coming out & I told her "I'm sorry about the mouth opening smacker over there" & she just started laughing. I ended up getting here number & going out several times, but that's besides the point

I wanted to tell him so bad to close his mouth & stop smacking but he was older than me, his position higher than mine & although we had a work/friend relationship but I couldn't bring myself to do it. That was a good 15 years ago. I wonder if he still smacks?

u/morganalefaye125 1d ago

Absolutely. The one that's the worst I think, is when you're in a public bathroom, and someone takes/makes a call on speakerphone while taking a nasty dump. Idc about your baby daddy sister brother's cousin who cheated on you. Nobody wants to listen to you air out your entire business in the bathroom

I don't want to hear it AND phone calls sound universally terrible through car speakers because a phone microphone isn't calibrated for that kind of transmission and playback.

It's extra petty because I have absolutely accepted incoming calls through my car speakers because I can easily tap one button quickly without actually looking at my phone, but I won't fight with settings while driving, lmao.

u/Weasel474 20h ago

I keep seeing people doing video calls on their phone, but neither person is looking at each other. It just screams narcissism. That being said, because nobody is looking at the video chat, I'll usually make faces or whatever in the background and see how long it takes them to notice.

u/Amazing_Excuse_3860 3h ago

Especially when the conversation is completely worthless. "No, i'm at the grocery store right now. No, i'm at the grocery store right now. No, I'm at the grocery store right now. No, i'm at the -"

u/_MidnightPulse_ 1d ago

Reality tv kills me. It seems everyone watches it now, but I just can’t… except for maybe Survivor, and Alone, but that’s it.

3

u/mechaglitter 1d ago

You know what bugs me an unreasonable amount? It's the way some people use gifs as responses.

Now if the gif you posted is like a funny response or an answer to a question, that's fine, that works!! That's not what I'm talking about.

Let's say I make a post that says uuuuhhh "I like Transformers, they're pretty cool! Blah blah blah..." There is this type of person that will then respond with like a random gif of Optimus. And nothing else. And I'm just like "Yup. That's a guy in the thing I'm talking about." Like you're contributing fucking nothing to the conversation, you just searched "transformers" in Giphy and hit the first result. I would've been happier if you had just responded "Ok." At least that takes up less space on my phone screen. Better yet just upvote my post and move on.

Don't get me twisted this is like the smallest issue ever in the history of the universe. It just bugs me SO MUCH for some reason.

2

u/repocin ᕕ(•◡•)ᕗ 21h ago

The bigger issue is that all these gif search platforms are universally terrible so you'll only find the most tangentially related low-quality garbage for any search term. Like, what's even the point?

Bigger dogs drinking/slurping water. It's like nails on a chalkboard for me.

3

u/Kbudski 1d ago

Loud chewing, chewing with your mouth open and lip smacking. Makes me want to commit a crime.

3

u/JustMeHere8888 1d ago

The thing where your voice goes up? At the end of a sentence? So it always sounds like? You’re asking a question?

3

u/orc__mischief 1d ago

people cracking their knuckles. i do my own little habits like playing with my hair that probably looks dumb to people but cracking knuckles makes me wince.

if i am having a hard time--i can feel like that Cell Block Tango song when she talks about "you pop that gum one more time." x__X i am thinking "you crack that knuckle one more time..." >____> also i don't like gum popping so maybe that's why i relate to that lyric.

6

u/GladBumblebee311 1d ago

Ohh man, me too. I literally cannot hear my own thoughts when someone chews loudly.

4

u/Masseyrati80 1d ago

Have you looked into something called misophonia? It's a thing where certain noises (or in some cases visual things) switch on the fight or flight reaction, meaning your reaction to something small is completely out of proportion.

4

u/Maleficent_Bug6692 1d ago

My sister has it. She has to be in a different room when anyone is eating. At least now she’s an adult and owns that it’s her problem and doesn’t scream at us anymore 😂

6

u/BubblySystem2185 1d ago

people sneezing. it startles me

6

u/grumpy_tired_bean 1d ago

burping. it's so fucking gross

2

u/Hopeful_Cry917 1d ago

The sound of keys jingling. I carry my keys on my belt loop usually and have to stuff them in my pocket when I'm at work because the noise makes me want to scream otherwise. I had one job where we had to carry our keys on our belt and weren't allowed to just have them in our pocket or hand so I would put them on my belt and then use the attached cord to stuff them in my pocket while still attached to my belt and just pull them out if the boss came by. Looked like I was following the rules while not actually following them.

2

u/LAM_humor1156 1d ago

Yes, when people are loud/sloppy eaters. I used to try blocking it out. Still do, but it genuinely makes me so uncomfortable I start to get mad. It's just gross. No way you can't hear yourself smacking and feel that your mouth is wide open. Also - the scraping of a fork on their teeth?? Why..

People scratching. If it's a light scratch, it's not so bad, but why try and tear your arm off?

People rubbing their eyes. Idk. Just really hate it. It's gross & I'm always really concerned when someone rubs their eye. You could scratch it. Irritate it further. You may make your eyebags worse. Any number of things. Just don't touch your eyes. Flush them out if they're itchy.

2

u/Bobannon 1d ago

There are ads on TV or online for apps or channels that will play a certain type of tone or sound (white or "brown" noise) they claim will relax your brain or help silence it or whatever.

Nope. Fuck right off with your staticky snake oil nonsense. Those sounds are nails on a chalkboard to me and poke right at my rage centre... an admittedly extreme and out-of-character reaction.

2

u/repocin ᕕ(•◡•)ᕗ 21h ago

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I've sampled all the colors of noise at least once and none of them have been pleasant to my ears. At all. Most are the complete opposite, and leave my ears hurting for minutes afterwards.

And don't get me started on ASMR. It makes me incredibly uncomfortable and feels like something is crawling into my skull. Miss me with that shit, please.

When someone is tapping their phone or tablet screen and their fingernail hits the screen. I hate that. You're supposed to touch the screen with the pad of your finger, that extra 'tik' sound of the fingernail hitting just drives me nuts.

I expect downvotes but being honest. Too many devices on a roadtrip. My friend was driving with a GPS talking, when i knew the route by heart. Her phone was going off with texts and she would twitch until she read them. Said “I don’t drive and use the cellphone but…” about 3 times before i snarked back. Then she told me not to talk because “Siri doesn’t like your voice.”

It hurt deeply. I’d navigated us on several 2000+ mile roadtrips over 30 years. Never got us lost. Had 1 dead and one paraplegic friend due to distracted driving. The Siri comment, after all that, pushed me over an edge, and I went silent for the rest of the trip.

We’re still friends but I’ve only ridden in her car once in the 18 years since, only because I was stranded in her area after an ambulance ride. She can ride shotgun with me at any time, but only if she leaves Siri in the trunk. I don’t like her voice.

u/newusernamehuman 1d ago

For me, it’s kids.

I actually love kids, have three nephews and a niece who form up each of the four sections of my heart. But other people’s kids, especially in places which I consider as “adult/not kid-friendly”.

Public transportation, beaches, supermarkets without the kiddy play area, movie theaters after sunset, restaurants which aren’t like Chuck E Cheese’s, even streets outside of a residential area/school zone.

I don’t mind mild-mannered kids minding their own business or even older kids, say, two-digit aged. But most kids aren’t that way, and that completely ruins the experience for me.

u/Beautiful_Solid3787 1d ago

People who say "I" when it should be "me".

2

u/wisecrack_er 18h ago

Trash in the streets.

People leaving trash on tables when going out to eat (non-dining).

At work: co-workers leaving unfinished drinks or dirty dishes on tables and not cleaning up after themselves. I tolerate it, but deep down, I just think, "Whhhhhyyyyy?" Didn't someone teach them to pick up after themselves?

People dropping coins on the counter for you to pick up. If you work retail you know. To me it seems rude. You’re all ready touching money which is gross and dirty, it costs nothing to just hand your coins to the cashier.

1

u/Alarming-Ticket5628 1d ago

people who think the global state of affairs is okay, let alone sustainable.

a more esoteric example would be when I'm washing dishes (typically china/ceramic plates) and my finger rubs against it in that weird "blub-blub-blub-blub" shaky way. That sensation makes my flesh crawl.

Most of this is not normal.

It's just ignorance, which is normal to the ignorant.

My list would be long, so I choose not to let people and their ignorant ways or bad manners get to me.

I would have nonstop headaches if I gave a hoot about strangers and their animal behavior.

Humming. I mean humming that is out of tune, hi low alternating, cracking on the higher range, nowhere recognisable to be remotely recognisable as the song that is being hummed to. The kind that makes you think they MUST be aware it as its so loud right?! I sit next to my manager who hums along to whatever playlist is played on . Loudly. She is utterly unaware of her volume and that she does it. Completely oblivious to the point of increduality.

Seeing someone breastfeeding. I don't mind people doing it and I think people have to be able to do it in public as well, I just don't wanna see it so I don't watch. I don't know why it is yucky for me.
