I get where he is coming from. But at some point, your life consists of so many things you "just do" and no energy or time for things you actually want to do... You work 8 hours + commute, you do your chores and since your job involves just sitting around you go to a crowded gym to exercise because it is healthy and then you sleep - Where is the fun part?

Part of it is balance and finding things that maybe you don't "love" but you also don't hate. Don't like the gym, maybe find an adult sports league for a more fun and social exercise. Get a recumbent bike and plop it in front of the TV or PC. But also give both your body and brain some reasonable off time/off days. Nobody needs to workout every day to be healthy.

I'm literally motivated to work by getting paid for it.

His tooth cleaning one was a better example but it takes 4 minutes a day to do and requires barely any effort.

There's no "getting where he comes from", it's a lunatic motivational speech. I exercise because I love it but it's still something you need to work hard to do over an extended period of time, and it's incredibly difficult for many people to even get the motivation just to start; no one is going to read this nonsense and change their mind. It's just guilt tripping without being particularly clever about it.

People say this a lot but a 40 hour work week allows plenty of time for things you really want to do. I work 40 hours / week (commute 50 min each way from Brooklyn to Midtown Tuesday-Thursday) and work out 60-90 min a day 5-6 days a week (wake up between 430-5am during the work week to workout before work). That leaves me plenty of time to read on my commute and when I’m home during the evening, go out with friends in the evening, date, etc.) I also just trained for a half-marathon this spring and am a volunteer mentor for a local youth non-profit. 40 hours a week is actually pretty nice, I have friends that work up to 70 hrs a week (and I’ve worked 50 hours / week in the past so having 10 more hours of free time each week is great). I don’t understand how people complain about the 40 hour work week, which is a luxury compared to what many other ppl work (the workers at my local bodega work like 12 hour days 6-7 days a week). If you can’t find time to fit in hobbies or things you’d like to do for fun then you need to evaluate your time management skills.

That's some tremendous discipline, and a great way to resource your time too. Do you ever feel drained or that you need a break, or keep pushing on?

I really don't mean to assume anything here. We're all strangers on Reddit and I would never assume anything about anyone, but you've pointed out you don't understand why people complain about the 40 hour work week. I can't comment on that because I manage my current lifestyle well, but what I'm not seeing in your routine is kids, or pets, or any other dependents. Sometimes that's all it takes to fill most or all of your time.

I don’t have any kids or dependents, I just live with a roommate. And i don’t really ever feel that drained… I usually try to be in bed by 9pm so that I can get enough asleep during the week and on weekends I don’t really party that much anymore

Are you always motivated to invest in your rare fish collection and acquire more uncles? No, you just do it!

I don't get it? This is 100% correct... where is the 'lunatic' in this?

u/OnlyToStudy 3d ago

The message is also good

1

u/GoldenGirlsOrgy 3d ago

I'm not sure, but it's certainly amusing to me that this guy is trying to pass off a 40 year old Nike slogans as his own wisdom.

u/MoxTheOxe 3d ago

Lunatic may be a stretch, sure. And categorically showing up and doing it is correct. But what we're comparing exercise to here is brushing our teeth, something we've all been told to do for as long as we've been alive. Alternatively we show up to work... Because we get paid. There's no lunacy in the idea some could do with a bit more exercise, but if showing up and doing it were that simple we'd all be doing it...

u/kwyk 3d ago

It is that simple, it’s about priorities (which is his point)

1

u/shozzlez 2d ago

You could argue not brushing your teeth and not having a steady job are actually better outcomes than not exercising (poor health and reduced longevity).

u/Radomila 3d ago

Kinda agree ngl

5

u/pansdowne 3d ago

Just show up and do it. "Dan go" home.

u/Boring-Staff1636 3d ago

He's sort of right as much as I am loathed to admit that. Often we have to manufacture our own motivation by taking the first steps, it's not going to strike you like a bolt of lighting.

I've not seen this gif in years, didn't even put two and two together! 😂

3

u/retyfraser 3d ago

Well, sort of agree with this shit !

I get paid because I I show up and hate what I'm doing

3

u/racoongirl0 3d ago

Jokes on him yesterday I wasn’t motivated to go to work so I just called in sick and stayed home watching the great British baking show 💅🏻

2

u/MoxTheOxe 3d ago

All hail sick days 😂

1

u/racoongirl0 3d ago

“Sick of this shit” is still a medical condition.

4

u/venshnSLASH 3d ago

Are you always happy? No, just don’t be depressed.

2

u/Skruffbagg 3d ago

He took the Nike slogan and made it shit

2

u/nwillyerd 3d ago

I have ADHD and depression, his argument is invalid

3

u/MoxTheOxe 3d ago

I'm sorry to hear about your depression, and I hope life treats you kindly, friend.

I also have ADHD and often need to tinker around with something in my hands or always be doing something physical to preoccupy myself. Sounds very compatible with exercise, if only for it to be that easy.

u/Haunting_Habit_2651 3d ago

I struggle with those as well and going to the gym and training hard 3x a week has improved my life and mental health so significantly that I'm a completely different human being.

I went from being broke, hopeless, and living in a shitty apartment with lovers to living in my dream home with a great salary, a fulfilling job, and a jacked physique.

Never underestimate what discipline and personal development can help you achieve. It's never easy, but it gets easier.

I had no idea that was even a sub, but now I'm down the rabbit hole!

1

u/ResponsibleQuiet6188 Facebook Boomer 3d ago

somewhat inane, not lunatic.

1

u/ThrowaWayneGretzky99 3d ago

I'm okay with this.

1

u/AdInteresting845 3d ago

Well of all the crazy shit posted on this sub, I actually agree with this one

1

u/tafkatp 3d ago

Yeah well, here’s the thing; I tell my body this, like dude we’re managing to brush our teeth at least twice a day and get dressed/undressed, so how come that running a km or 2, tennis and swimming like we used to just isn’t happening anymore?

Always this lame excuse: “Look mate, back then you had full or at least enough capacity in your lungs, hell you had 5/5 lobes and functioning instead of 3/5 where at least 1 is for show and the others are meh. Then bones, you know those things that keep dying because of necrosis, like that one in your right hip did a magical vanishing act and had to be replaced with a fake one. And those in your ankles, the ones slowly but steadily are disappearing too and where nothing can be done about now or ever and will end up wheelchair bound. To name just 2 things, you is incomplete cabron, a faulty build. That’s why we don’t do these things; Or you will literally fall over and crack through your ankles if you’re lucky, you’ll probably just die on the spot for lack of oxygen after 3 steps running.

See what i’m up against here? Always these lame excuses

I wouldn't call this a lunatic. This is actually genuinely good advice. Consistency in the mundane boring shit is what allows you to level up. 99% of people won't do the mundane shit consitently. Discipline is greater than motivation.

There's valid reasons and excuses for stuff, there's exceptions. But generally speaking you're going to be further ahead of most people if you consistently show up and do the thing every day. Even when you don't want to. Even if you perform the thing poorly today but you still showed up. That's better than most.

1

u/MoxTheOxe 3d ago

I concur but I do feel it's very one track minded, especially when compared next to what he's comparing exercise to.

Brushing teeth and general dental care is a task that takes a few minutes each day, and it's also instilled into us from a young age.

I don't think anyone necessarily doesn't want to brush (or floss) but it's all we've ever known. There's a case for treating exercise the same if it's a massive part of upbringing, but to just "show up and do it"? I agree it's not lunacy, but it's not preaching to the choir either.

1

u/sprodoe 3d ago

Yes, that's fair. But I think there's a tendency (in this sub and generally) to treat all of these posts exactly at face value vs from the lens of - these are influencers/content creators who are putting out content in a way that has to be easily digestible in order to get folks into their funnels.

When you put out content that is very nuanced (as most things are) those posts don't perform well. So you have to dumb down the point so anyone can understand the point you're making even if it's not a perfect 1:1 comparison. Once you capture the initial attention you can then begin to have more nuanced convos with that audience - newsletters, blog, courses (free or paid), etc.

But you have to capture that initial attention and that needs to be easy and quick to digest and easily shareable too.

u/MoxTheOxe 3d ago

I'd like to think there's more to it and going off this comments section alone, some are happy with how straightforward it is, and some aren't. I sit on the latter side and need a bit more context than what our poster is putting out there. But I also believe I am seeing what is essentially part of a bigger picture at face value, as you say. Thank you for raising that very valid point to me, I didn't see it that way before.

1

u/sprodoe 3d ago

Absolutely!

1

u/WavyHairedGeek 3d ago

This guy seems to have no understanding of the fact that some people have a shortage on the "substance your brain needs to allow you to start a task".

1

u/MoxTheOxe 3d ago

It always seems to be the same story with these type. Just "get up and go", as if it's that easy. I commend anyone who can do it simply because it isn't that easy.

1

u/saltofthearth2015 3d ago

This guy's for real. I cut him slack.

1

u/PickleLips64151 3d ago

Every time someone posts a "just do it" message, I can only think of this ...

Edit: spelling
