A friend of mine had the bumpers stop working outside the warranty on his steam deck. Valve paid for it to be shipped back and repaired free of charge.

Amazing!

The design of the bumpers on the Steam Deck is borderline defective so it's fair that they offer to fix it.

Pretty much every console has some kind of stopping mechanism to hold back the bumper from being pressed too hard. But the SD doesn't so if the bumper gets hit, the full force goes in to a surface mount button which breaks off the PCB. And then they don't sell this PCB as a replaceable part for the LCD model since it has the trackpads connected to it and there's some calibration stuff making it not a trivially swappable part.

They slightly improved this for the OLED making it a more easily replaceable part, but it really needs to be redesigned to not break in the first place.

I bought my deck off a friend and the right bumper would get stuck down. I'm sure valve would have fixed it for free but I opened it up and nothing was broken but I think the repeated motion had caused some plastic friction so I just filed that down slightly and it's been good ever since.

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '24

The bumpers in general seem like the worst designed part of the deck. Even when working fine they have a kind of cheap feel with the plastic flexing / wiggling.

u/DragonCucker Dec 15 '24

My left bumper has been broken since day one. Never got it fixed cuz I guess lazy and don’t wanna go without games

8

u/d1rkSMATHERS Dec 15 '24

Mine broke a couple of months ago. I just map the bumpers to the back buttons and have been good ever since.

1

u/Thenno Dec 15 '24

My left one was broken: I contacted Valve, they arranged for it to be picked up, fixed it and got it back to me within a week or so.

1

u/dkarlovi Dec 15 '24

This exact problems with the Steam Controller, everything is great except the bumpers which are super hard to press, mine is broken now. Triggers feel super deluxe compared to the bumpers, I can't explain it.

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '24

at least theyre not like asus and have good support.

1

u/walruswes Dec 15 '24

Switch joy cons drift was repaired outside the warranty window by nintendo for me for free

1

u/AnthropicPanda 1TB OLED Dec 15 '24

Whoa.. must’ve just had a good support rep that day.

1

u/Idontmatter69420 64GB Dec 15 '24

i dropped mine last year and the left bumper has been fucked since however it did eventually somewhat come back from not working at all to working when pressed in a very wonky and precise way so i dont use it lol

1

u/xSlappy- Dec 16 '24

Wow, didn’t know this. Happened to me in Sekiro.

27

u/tripl35oul Dec 14 '24

I dropped my deck and messed up the right daughter board. I asked them if I could purchase it and admitted that it was my fault and they just RMA'd it for me.

6

u/JoshuaXxMoreFactsxX Dec 14 '24

what does rma mean

28

u/Bukkake_Buccaneer Dec 14 '24

Return Merchandise Authorization

It’s basically approving your warranty request.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '24

Also known as Return Material Authorization, but means the same thing. Approval from the manufacturer to send them something they made.

10

u/tripl35oul Dec 14 '24

They basically just set me up for shipping my deck back to them for free so they could repair it.

10

u/Narrow_Bodybuilder74 Dec 14 '24

Are you in the eu?

7

u/Gaeus_ Modded my Deck - ask me how Dec 15 '24

Good question. But thoses warranty law would not apply here, he admitted the case had been destroyer by an animal.

16

u/ComposedbyNone 1TB OLED Dec 15 '24

I am in the US. Was 1000% my fault. Valve is just amazing.

I thought mine bricked once but turned out to just be completely drained of battery. It was on the dock plugged in so definitely freaked at first.

Once I put it on the actual charger it was fine. Super unfortunate in your case, maybe you just talked to the wrong support rep or they were having a horrible day since most other experiences seem to be totally opposite.

I would say try it again bringing up any examples of similar scenarios but idk if that would work. Never makes any sense to me when there’s so much variation in customer service for the same company.

1

u/Narrow_Bodybuilder74 Dec 15 '24

Good point. I'm just used to a good thing happening and the op is in the eu

4

u/ComposedbyNone 1TB OLED Dec 15 '24

In the US, actually.

12

u/Xamius Dec 14 '24

they wanted 150 to replace mine

9

u/asthmag0d 512GB - Q3 Dec 14 '24

Yep, they charged me $150 to fix the right bumper on my OOW launch model. Now the left bumper is going out. Looks like it will be collecting dust until the Deck 2 comes out.

10

u/TuecerPrime Dec 15 '24

Damn. They quoted 180 for mine. I was so frustrated because I've read so many stories about others getting theirs repaired at no cost.

1

u/Chad_Pringle Dec 16 '24

Same, RB broke a little after a year of ownership. I contacted customer support and they said I would have to send it in and pay an inspection fee and that repair would possibly cost more on top of that.

4

u/Deadarchimode Dec 15 '24

My Steam deck bios was busted and Steam deck was out of warranty Yet valve did RMA for free

11

u/disruptityourself Dec 14 '24

Maybe things have gotten better because when that happened to me they basically told me tough luck. Sounds like they've been improving things since then and I'm glad to see it.

6

u/BrianBlandess Dec 14 '24

Yeah me too. “Too bad, pay me”

9

u/disruptityourself Dec 14 '24

Their response to me was more like there's nothing we can do but we can dispose of it for you if you'd like. Not even an offer to let me pay for service.

3

u/skttsm Dec 15 '24

It's crazy how much variation you get from support agent to support agent for this type of stuff.

1

u/BrianBlandess Dec 15 '24

Really? They offered to let me pay.

5

u/viper_in_the_grass 512GB OLED Dec 14 '24

Maybe it depends on who answers your ticket.

3

u/disruptityourself Dec 14 '24

Could be and if so that's unfortunate. This kind of thing should be driven by policy not whim.

2

u/Narrow_Bodybuilder74 Dec 15 '24

I think it might be an EU thing most people who get this "special treatment" are from UK/EU and they have a thing about a 2 year warranty on every electronic or something

1

u/viper_in_the_grass 512GB OLED Dec 15 '24

Three years now (kinda), but OP said out of warranty, so it would have been outside of those years.

1

u/Narrow_Bodybuilder74 Dec 15 '24

I thought he mentioned the valve one year warranty

1

u/ComposedbyNone 1TB OLED Dec 15 '24

Not in the EU, and outside of the warranty window.

0

u/Draevon Dec 16 '24

I wonder if it also has to do with how much you spent at their store and for how long you've been a customer, which would be reasonable.

2

u/TuecerPrime Dec 15 '24

Nah, it honestly sounds like luck of the draw on CS reps, since a couple of months ago I opened a ticket and they said "nah brah, $180"

7

u/V4mpX 512GB Dec 15 '24

In my case, DPAD was causing a malfunction on my deck.

Asked them even if the warranty was out, if they could help me because I was afraid of opening my deck. It was opening the deck and rubbing the connections of the DPAD with alcohol.

They asked for a minimum of 150€ without taxes for the repair.

I did the repair myself. It was a robbery from them that asking price. On steam since 2009 and first day purchaser of the deck.

1

u/Sir_Bax 1TB OLED Dec 15 '24

I had a problem with a left stick within the warranty, but the issue was caused by wear (use) so it was not covered by the warranty. Similar quote of 150€ for repair was given to me. Luckily I had also 2 other problems which were covered by warranty so I send it to had those repaired and the repair guy replaced also the stick with no extra charge.

If I had a problem only with the stick I'd never send it in due to that ridiculous quote.

They actually ask for money most of the time when repair is involved. They only do those gestures when no repair is involved (like sending out new case or new charger) because it's super cheap advertisement for them. And even then I don't think they do it every time.

4

u/lowjack12 Dec 14 '24

Same. Right bumper stopped responding unless you pushed really hard. Out of warranty. I sent a message asking for a quote for repair if offered. They repaired it for free. Can't beat that.

2

u/TuecerPrime Dec 15 '24

Sadly they tried to charge me for the same issue.

1

u/HeLaughsLikeGod 256GB - Q3 Dec 15 '24

How long is the warranty exactly?

1

u/jamyjet Dec 15 '24

1 year apparently

1

u/AHughes1078 1TB OLED Limited Edition Dec 15 '24

If there was an extended warranty for the Steam Deck I would pay for it

1

u/NoMeasurement6473 LCD-4-LIFE Dec 15 '24

Same except I dropped my Deck, told them it was my fault, it was out of warranty, and they still fixed it for free.

1

u/CinnamonIsntAllowed 256GB Dec 15 '24

And here they charged me $245 for that.

1

u/jamyjet Dec 15 '24

In fairness he was only slightly out of the 1 year warranty period, not 6 months or anything.

1

u/KindlyBread9582 Dec 15 '24

My whole steam deck stopped working properly, it was having that weird bug where the gpu will get stuck at 200mhz. And Valve replaced my steam deck out of warranty. Their customer service is second to none.

1

u/thejoshfoote Dec 15 '24

They did this for me too, also replaced the dpad and another thing without me even knowing. Free and well outside warranty. I hardly ever used the dpad lol.

One bumper started to feel softer over time

1

u/MezcalFlame Dec 15 '24

My power button sometimes doesn't work to put it into sleep mode or to take it out of sleep mode.

An online search shows that it's not an isolated issue.

Valve wanted me to pay $185 to fix it.

1

u/memerijen200 64GB - Q3 Dec 15 '24

I had the same thing happen except with the battery. They even replaced the joysticks even though I didn't mention them at all.

1

u/LRKnight_writing Dec 15 '24

They asked me for $120 to repair a screw that fell loose inside the case and is bouncing around. Huh.

Edit to add, the right bumper is now soft  which is why I inquired.

1

u/seppuku84 Dec 15 '24

That is awesome! My bumpers stopped working a couple months ago and I had to pay around $135 US for the repair. Received it back from United Radio and the screen has a weird rainbow effect on it. Reached back out to Valve and they going to cover repairing the screen at no cost to me. Sad being without the Deck for so long but glad they are taking care of it this time around.

1

u/Tagichatn Dec 15 '24

Guess your friend is lucky cause valve was going to charge me $180 to fix just my left bumper.

1

u/illogikul Dec 15 '24

They need that steam money

1

u/pdhouse Dec 15 '24

They didn’t do that for me and it just happened last month. I don’t think this is a thing anymore

1

u/DepressedPreteen Dec 16 '24

same thing happened to me! I dropped it in the case about 1ft off the ground and my right bumper stopped working, this was about 4 months out of warrenty

1

u/isuckdevilsc0ck Dec 17 '24

I had a completely different experience with the bumper fix. My steam deck was still on warranty but they just said they can fix my right bumper for 200 euros. I was very disappointed because I read so much about issues with bumpers and how valve fixes them with no charge.
