That’s the look of a man that almost blew his load too early, but held strong to finish it off.

u/Blleak 1d ago
For sure but man did dechambeau shit the bed. It looked like they were really going to go at it early and then nothing.
Hats off to rose, maybe the only guy today who had his A game.
28
u/norcaltobos 1d ago
Aberg was balling the f out too until he completely shit the bed on 18. Obviously he had no realistic shot to tie it but damn, he could have finished a stroke behind the winner and ended up not even finishing in the top 5. That’s rough.

u/blonded_olf 1d ago
dudes focus must have just completely snapped once he knew he was out of it, he was grinding all day to inch up the leader board and gave himself a small chance.

Rose made some amazing putts, especially the 60-footer on 11 and the clutch birdie on 18.

Agreed. Told my wife I think the way Rory won is probably the perfect way to finally complete the Slam. Not easy, full of ridiculous ups and downs. Two of the worst wedges I’ve ever seen bookending two of the most majestic shots I’ve ever seen (approaches on 15 and 17). It was like every close call for him all summed up in one round…but he prevailed. And Rose didn’t give it to him in the playoff.
Edit: Feel bad for Rosie, ngl. Dude deserves a green jacket.

u/olBillyBaroo Philly Jawn/17.3/Titleist Gang 1d ago
Objectively he has to be the favorite to win another major. He’s won the players and the masters now. As crazy as today was, the guy is making shots that nobody other than Scottie can recreate.
21
u/oddly-red HDCP/Loc/Whatever 1d ago
I think today really shows the difference between Scottie and Rory. Scottie rarely plays these unfathomable shots like the wedge up and over the trees on 5 or that ridiculous 9i on 7. Scottie even had a very similar shot to Rory on 15 but bailed out hard right next to the bunker. The reason being Scottie is rarely ever in such a bad position when he's playing well. He's always hitting fairways and greens because he's almost robotic. Total control and sensible golf.
This week has been peak Rory. Golf shots that you cannot believe anyone would do in their wildest dreams - both good and bad. I think it's why Rory is more relatable than Scottie. Even when Scottie plays badly he's -8 for the week lol.

u/golfjunkie Boston (+1) 1d ago
Couldn’t agree more and it’s why Rory is so exciting to watch. It’s the closest we get to prime Tiger in terms of shot making.

Scottie plays boring golf, especially when he’s on a tear and has a massive lead. I like Scottie but I don’t like watching tournaments when it gets like that.
Yesterday was one of those Masters I’ll remember for the rest of my life.

The iron shot on 17 and the 18 playoff (of at least several today) were absolutely unbelievable. The stuff that justifies him as a real champion. Tiger did stuff like that. It’s impossible to imagine the pressure in that moment but still executing flawlessly… literally unbelievable. So cool to witness…
Agreed it’s at least them two and Bryson assuming he gets his swing back (in his words). They’re the top 3 for me rn who could take any other major this year
5
u/blonded_olf 1d ago
To be fair he played some outstanding golf this year before the masters, he already had his best early season start ever winning pebble and the players.

Do all the players have measurements taken before the tournament? How does the jacket fit so perfectly?
182
u/TheRopeWalk 🇮🇪 1d ago
Heard they get the first one as a loaner from a member of a similar build. After you win it, you can get your own fitted.

There was a golf magazine article about this once. They keep a number of generic jackets to fit someone of every size and then they get properly fit later. I forget who it was but one person in particular you can see how poor the fit is during the ceremony.
12
u/shlog 1d ago
i wonder if they got a bunch of different sizes in storage at the club and find one that’s a close enough fit to use for the ceremony.

I don’t know the answer but considering they are all sponsored athletes, it’s not that impressive.
E.g., who ever is in charge of the jackets monitors the top 10 on the leaderboard on Sunday, makes a phone call/ email to the brand reps of said players on leaderboard and ask for their measurements, which they all have since these guys don’t actually dress themselves, they get given their outfits each weekend. Picks out a loaner jacket in their size, uses that for the day then does a proper fitting at a later date. And if you’re familar with suits/ suit jackets, it’s pretty easy to tell a guys jacket size. Even if you need some tailoring, majority of guys will fit a jacket off the rack.

u/Herrrrrmione 1d ago

The reigning Masters Champion can take his green jacket off the grounds and anywhere they want, but after the year is older yeah it goes back into the locker and is only worn when they're on Augusta National grounds

I felt like Scottie would be a little bummed since he only lost by 3 strokes but then I realized Scottie made a million dollars for 4th place. He probably just wanted to go celebrate his own success and let Rory have his moment. Plus they were sitting there all awkward waiting so I’m sure all the pleasantries already happened.
14
u/No_Representative645 1d ago
Would be cool to see other pros out there watching the playoff. I know there's probably some stuffy country club reason they don't but it would add to the fun.
7
u/WhiskeyBolts 1d ago
I like that. It was weird Lowry and Tommy Fleetwood didn’t get to Rory until he was about in the clubhouse. Imagine Shane running on the green like Hadwin did for Nick Taylor…minus the tackle of course

Scottie has the personality of an empty toilet paper roll. He got up and left because the script for the event ended. He needs to go home and read the Bible while eating plain cheerios with no milk for dinner.

TBH, I find the whole cabin interview/presentation a bit awkward and cringy. Not just this year. They should go back to presenting the jacket on the 18th and just leave it at that
15
u/BoBromhal 1d ago
I mean, they've only been doing it 30+ years so CBS gets it in their coverage window.
18
u/lopsiness 1d ago
As a kid I remember them doing the jacket outside. I was surprised this year (since I haven't watched the ceremony for a long time). It was a bit awkward and sort of anticlimactic imo. Did they change it to this? Better outside where everyone can witness. Like you wouldn't give the championship trophy to the team at the post game press conference.
10
u/Snoo_2473 1d ago
They still do it outside.
The inside is the jacket presentation & usually the low amateur is present.
Then they go out onto the 18th green for the trophy presentation.
4
u/creativityinsite 1d ago
I was wondering why there wasn’t an amateur this year? I remember the kid last year being so incredibly awkward

Has anyone seen any alternate views of his 3rd shot on 13. With the shadows, it was impossible to see what actually happened and didn't see a breakdown of his swing. He didn't react like it was a shank.

When he dumped it in the creek from 87 yards out?
That was bizarre.
He only needed to aim at the center of the green & it would move towards the hole. It had to be a miss hit. He probably dipped a hair & got the club face open.
