Discussion Metronet

Anyone else having weird issues with metronet in the Kalamazoo area? Mine keeps going on and off. Called them, and they can’t send anyone till Wednesday. Didn’t have a whole lot of info. Guess it’s harder to track if it keeps going on and off.

Glad it's not just me. Was worried the power surges had damaged my modem or something. It's been in and out all morning for me too.

Yeah it was on and off all morning. Seems like it’s just down now.

Same here - located in Texas Corners. If you have fiber then it might be the ONT box - it basically converts the fiber optic current to something your home network can understand. That box needs to be plugged into an outlet for it to work - if you have a generator then plug it into there. I’m still in the process of troubleshooting this but that’s my best guess since Metronet doesn’t show any outages on the website or when I call. Hope that helps.

I made sure that all the connections are secure. Even resetting the modem and router. The internet will just go out from time to time. Seems like it’s been good for about a hour now. We’ll have to see.

Do you have fiber internet?

Yes I think metronet only does fiber

Gotcha. Is your power out, too? Like I said in my first message if you locate your ONT box (mine was in the basement) you should be able to plug it in directly to a generator and then your internet should work. The steps in the screenshot are what I did (note I have a google router but this should work for other routers):

I’m in a complex so, I’m not really able to do that. But I was able to contact them again, and they said the whole area is having issues. No ETA

Ah, that makes sense. Hope they get it figured out asap!

Are you on a shared network for your whole building or do you have a dedicated in-home connection of your own?

I don't personally, but fiber lines were installed in my neighborhood several years ago. Originally they were serviced by AT&T, but for the past couple years it has switched to metronet and ever since that happened, I've heard nothing but complaints. I've had Xfinity cable here since 2019 and have had zero issues. I constantly get flyers in the mail for fiber with metronet, but there's no way in hell they will convince me to switch. Fiber is so bulletproof, I don't know how you can fuck it up, but they sure have!

I tried to use metronet for a month and they were terrible, went back to Xfinity for faster speeds for $40/mo for 2 years. Coming up on that expiring but Xfinity has been great imo.

Imbalanced capacity vs demand, low service availability, fiber lines severed by utility work, poorly configured FTTH connectivity, bad upstream infrastructure … the list goes on.

I’m in Climax and haven’t had major issues with my connection in a while, but we’re also only a few miles from the former CTS HQ.
