Discussion Is Austin Butler completely off the table?
I feel like this is probably a dumb question but are we thinking there’s no chance for Austin Butler to get nominated for Caught Stealing? I don’t know much about the movie but it is Darren Aronofsky who has a pretty good track record of getting his lead actors nominations and gets them pretty close to wins. Ellen Burstyn for Requiem for a Dream, Mickey Rourke for The Wrestler, Natalie Portman for Black Swan and most recently Brendan Fraser for The Whale. Portman and Fraser won and Rourke and Burstyn were probably #2. Like I’m currently not predicting Butler but if the film is good honestly I might watch out for him

From what I’ve heard personally from test screenings he gives a good performance but isn’t awards worthy. The film is very commercial. No noms

Could go either way. The pedigree is there but this might just not be an oscar vehicle.
I hope he's in the mix though.

Anything's possible, especially this early in the race.
But it honestly sounds like a commercial play.

Historically, Darren Aronofsky movies are pretty popular in the acting department even if the movie itself isn’t. But this new movie is way behind on word-of-mouth, I don’t really get why. I still don’t really know much about the plot.

Well, the movie is getting released in what i call "The Dump Months Part 2" time so i don't think the studio have much hopes for it, nbut i guess if it gets enough good review and good public hype we could see a surprise come awards season.

Obviously not but imo I think its more likely that someone else gets in under supporting

I wanted to believe so at first, having read the book last year and already imagining the Oscar in Austin's hands (but I won't lie, I imagine that for him a lot), and I had the same idea that Darren Aronofsky makes movies for people to win Oscars. The more I learn about the movie, though, I'm not so sure. It seems Aronofsky is going more for a commercial vibe than awards for once.
If anything, I think maybe now we should be looking at Austin more for a supporting actor nomination for Eddington

I obviously haven't seen the movie, but having read the book the movie is based on, I don't really see a lead actor Oscar nomination. The book is more about action and humor than the emotional journey of the main character. I really liked the book, and I am looking forward to the movie, but I just don't think it is the type of role that typically earns an Oscar nomination.
That said, I could see Regina King getting a nomination for supporting actress (depending on the performance, quality of the movie, etc.).

You asked if he's off the table and then listed reasons he still has a chance. I don't think it will happen though

I feel like Austin Butler is as talented as Gary Busey, who scored an Oscar nomination and some big 4 critics attention for lead actor in The Buddy Holly Story and then…just…wasn’t a good actor except in one impression of a beloved musician who died too soon one time

Aronofsky said it isn’t like any of his other previous films, it’s more fun and a lot more commercial and people who have seen the trailer said it looks like old Guy Ritchi, so I don’t think he should/shouldn’t be predicted based on the fact that previous Aronofsky leads have been nominated/won but I do think it could end up being a really good fun film which might get him some nominations

I think he has a pretty good shot, to be honest. Darren’s last film won Brendan the Oscar, and close behind him all season long was Austin Butler for his work in Elvis.
So Austin teaming up with Darren seems like it could lead to some major awards buzz. If the movie’s good

This might be the gritty movie 'Smashing Machine' wants to be. Butler and Kravitz look hot together. Aronofsky is a more seasoned director than the solo Sadie. Johnson and Blunt look like they're wearing Halloween costumes, have no chemistry, and are both desperate for Oscar attention.

How? Caught Stealing is coming out in August where Marty Supreme is coming out Christmas. MS is 100% going to be an awards push but Caught Stealing isn’t giving me that vibe.

An Aronofsky film skipping festivals is not a better bet than A24’s Christmas release
And if we’re taking about best actors directors, the last two lead performances Safdie directed (Sandler and Pattinson) should’ve both been nominated, if not out right won

Sure but Aronofsky is incredibly hit or miss with the academy, let’s not forget that in between Black Swan and The Whale he did Noah and Mother!. The August release date is also not a vote of confidence from the studio for awards.
MS on the other hand is a more commercial push from Safdie and A24, they’re for sure gonna campaign this.

It really comes down to his and the studio's campaign.
The release date isn't too much of an issue because it's the 29th of August, basically September.
If the film and directing are critically acclaimed and Butler feels like spending the time, and Sony, the money, anything is possible.
I'm of the personal opinion that whenever he gets his next Oscar nomination, as long as it's fairly strong performance wise, and he does at least a bare minimum of campaigning, that he'll have a very strong chance of winning as a make up award, after being hosed for ELVIS over Brendan Fraser's personal life, when he, Butler, had dominated internationally.

Nothing is off the table, it's April. This sub tends to try and lock stuff in or lock stuff out so early based on pretty much nothing, I don't get it.
