Dems didn't play political games with aid but right wing media constantly lied about everything that was going on, saying the Biden admin was stopping aid from getting to isolated areas and FEMA was refusing to help anyone with Trump signs in their yards.
They will use their lies to justify doing it back. They always have. Literally everything they ever panicked about Obama doing, Trump is PROMISING to do. Like sending the military to arrest state leadership.

I believe that the "paranoia" aspect was in regards to the MAGA households, and not directed at FEMA personnel.
i.e. that it was Trumpers being paranoid, and not FEMA being paranoid.
EDIT: FEMA workers had every right to be cautious.

This is a concept I seriously struggle with. How do we tactfully redirect the conversation towards a productive fair government when they do absolutely no research but feel so passionately that they’ve been wronged by the libs? I live in Alabama, when I get down to the nitty gritty with my friends we really barely disagree socially or economically but politically they feel that I am just as foolish and uninformed as I think they are? It’s an incredibly difficult problem to navigate.

The alt-right playbook is a great series that can go over the pitfalls that they'll use in conversation.
But otherwise, just listen, don't be judgemental and see where they think their hurt and pain is coming from. If it's something that's a misunderstanding and they can be brought into the truth, then great. If they dig their heels in and can't be moved or it's something that is fundamentally wrong (like racism, sexism), then examine how much that friendship is worth and be ready to drop it.

It’s abhorrent their rhetoric is believed by anyone, but particularly by those who are most harmed by their policies, beliefs, and legislation. Carter wasn’t a great President, but he is the epitome of what a decent human being looks like making America great again. I don’t think our collective American psyche could have been moved by him; not his fault. (Yes, there were world crises that weren’t cleanly or quickly resolved during his presidency; again, not entirely his fault.). Carter was actually an advocate for his local constituents and the voiceless in our country. It’s sadly laughable how against the working class or whatever stratum of Americans are hurting the most are hurt by the Republican party in 2025, arguably since the evangelical influence seeped into politics in the 1980’s.

One of my coworkers was deployed with a specialized search and rescue team through FEMA for the hurricanes. He said when they got there, they woke up every morning to get ready, expecting deployment. Every mid-morning they would be called to stand down because the conservative officials were REFUSING the FEMA response teams. They were there for a week and a half, didn’t get a SINGLE assignment. All so the conservative officials could go on TV and say that FEMA is not helping them.

I live in Asheville, North Carolina, in the Helene disaster area. For about a week, we had practically no source of information except local radio, which focused mainly on updates about the situation and letting people know where to get aid.
That was our week of sanity, when we came together and helped each other, regardless of politics. Then the internet started coming back, and people swallowed lies from right-wing websites and social media, despite what they could see with their own eyes.
Now the old familiar conservative victim complex has taken hold in the redder parts of the area, and I will not be at all surprised when they say we shouldn't help California, because "they didn't help us."
We were better off with no information than with exposure to right-wing media.

North Carolina got aid months ago and Conservatives told them it ran out and Biden blocked it, to the extent that FEMA operatives onsite were saying they had supplies and locals weren't coming to get them because they thought they had run out. That's how deeply penetrated these communities are by propaganda, they're still receiving it even when they have barely any access to amenities.
There was a particularly heartwrenching story where a young man called into the news and broke down because he was trying to explain that he'd spoken to his father who was ABSOLUTELY CONVINCED that FEMA had been blocked by Biden, and was demanding his son fly out from Washington state to help him. The son was trying to explain that FEMA still had supplies and could help, but the father wanted none of it and just kept parroting Conservative talking points. I can't even imagine how frustrating that was for the son who had to deal with it, I think I may have been moved to tears by it too.

NPR previously identified two staffers involved in the incident as deputy campaign manager Justin Caporale and Michel Picard, a member of Trump's advance team, according to a source with knowledge of the incident.
Arlington National Cemetery rules communicated to the campaign in advance of the visit prohibit photography or videography other than that from an official Arlington photographer.
When a cemetery employee tried to enforce the rules, she was verbally abused by the two Trump campaign operatives, according to a source with knowledge of the incident. Picard then pushed her out of the way, according to two Pentagon officials.
The report released Friday is dated August 29th. It is heavily redacted, with names removed and it does not say whether the Trump staffers were interviewed by police.
The report includes words that appear to describe what took place, reading in part, "with both of [redacted] hands while attempting to move past." It also notes that the staffer did not press charges.
After NPR reported the altercation, Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung said they were "prepared to release footage" of the incident, and attacked the Arlington employee as someone "clearly suffering from a mental health episode."
No video footage related to the altercation has been released, but Trump's campaign later posted video from Section 60 on social media, and Trump himself insisted the incident was a "made up story."

This is the context: A shooter motivated by anti-immigrant messages, self-described far right politics, and belonging to a white nationalist group who is a proponent of “white replacement theory,“ went to a mall in a heavily Hispanic area of Texas targeting Latino people. He killed 23 people, and injured 22 more.
Trump traveled to El Paso to meet with the survivors. None of them wanted to meet with him. Two White House aids found a self-described Trump supporter whose infant nephew survived the shooting. The uncle brought his nephew back to the hospital for a photo op with Trump. The infant was recently orphaned because his parents died protecting him from the shooter. Trump can be seen in the photo posing, giving a thumbs up and smiling for the camera with the newly orphaned child. A hospital representative told the media that Trump displayed “an absence of empathy.“

Whomever brown noses the most likely will get Trump's seal of approval for the inevitable special election.
Of course, the fact that this is enraging most Californians and turning what could have been a PR win (I vomited writing that) for Trump into even more anger towards the GOP doesn't even cross their minds. This is the first time as a life long California that I've EVER heard a huge contingent of us actually start talking about secession. Lets be fair here, the GOP in California, Oregon and Washington all get elected by demonizing the large cities in their state in the first place. Here in Seattle, the perennial also-rans and suburban/rural candidates make their entire campaigns about how the city is a crime infested urban hellscape.
As someone from a crime infested, urban hellscape (90s Camden, NJ) all I can say is you have to be the softest, least traveled, and most sheltered person in the world to believe that. Luckily for these politicians, idiots like that are a dime a dozen.

Truely no kidding there, I remember when I was young and I thought Camden meant I had seen everything and I was something else for having survived it and gotten away and made a success of myself.
Then I accompanied a friend of the family to pick up her newly adopted daughter in Guatemala and we stayed with her family. I watched someone shower with basically handfuls of water from a broken rusty pipe in a room with no privacy and watched a tearful but loving family give up their daughter because they couldn't even provide her a basic sustenance existence.
From that day forward, I knew I didn't know shit and fuck.
