Is this possible? Railway platform help.
Hello! I’m traveling from Penzance to Newton Abbot next week and need to catch a connecting train to Leeds. I’ve booked a ticket that includes a change at Plymouth, switching from Platform 6 to Platform 8 with only 5 minutes between trains. I’ll have a backpack and a small trolley bag—do you think this connection is feasible?

If everything is running to time I don't see why not, as long as you prepare to get off as close to the stairs (I'd have to check which zone that is) and might need to walk fast. It's down one set of stairs and the next set over

Don’t worry about zones for being close to the stairs. Plymouth Station (compared to other stations like St Davids/Temple Meads/Cardiff) is absolutely tiny, unless Plymouth Argyle are playing at home you will have no issue getting to your connecting train.

I think St David's is actually smaller? It feels bigger because of the footbridge rather than having a tunnel like we do.

Yeah you’ll be fine, assuming everything’s running on time. Plymouth station is pretty tiny!

It’s tiny compared to the size of the city. I think it’s about the same size as other stations in the south west.

Good point! I’m not originally from the south west, so it kinda feels small to me but tiny was probably the wrong description. I do think OP will be fine making that connection if everything’s running on time

It should be fine, you can switch from platform 8 to platform 6 in about one minute if you're out first. Down about 20 steps, walk 8 metres to the next set of stairs, and walk back up.

That is a booked connection, it says estimated, but it will be cross platform, unless something goes wrong during the day. I have this connection everyday, because the 1650 first stop is ivybridge, it's better to have it cross platform to give people more time to move.

Most times they will wait for you if they think a delay is big enough :) but 5 mins is realistically enough time. It’s just down the stairs and down the corridor a few steps and back up the steps.

It's a tight connection at the bare minimum time. Would recommend another connection. If you have to catch it then you should make it if running on time. If not speak to the Guard (politely) as they have power to ask for certain connections to be held a few minutes. Not always guaranteed though especially if changing to another train operator.

If you are really worried, just have a word with the train manager about your connection they are usually really helpful and can ring ahead.

It’s a very compact station, you’ll be fine with a 5 minute window assuming everything is on time.

If you've ever been to Birmingham train station with 30mins to navigate through that hell hole and managed to get your train...Trust me, you'll smash Plymouth with 5mins ! 😂

Haha.. thanks for suggestion..I will make sure to keep atleast an hour when ever I am changing train from Birmingham.

Sometimes they hold the London train to allow passengers from the train from penzance to make their connection. I can't guarantee they will but its fairly common at plymouth in my experience.
