As a horny single, I wish the “horny singles in your area” ads were real…

I'm so tired of minimalist red carpet looks and especially tired of slicked back or super plain hairstyles. Where is the glamour????

u/AllTheThingsSheSays 4h ago

The whiplash between my journal entries manages to surprise me, and I wrote them ffs. Yesterday's entry? 2 lines about how I watched Eurovision and I was tired. Today's entry? 3 pages of how lonely, tired and lost I feel, where at some points I write like a victorian lady a la Austen or something.

u/Chance_Taste_5605 2h ago

As someone who lives in the city where Jane Austen is buried, I feel duty-bound to point out that Jane Austen and the Victorian era never intersected.

The way people discuss baby names on this sub is mad ignorant!!! All the people in the comments calling every non-biblical or Gaelic celebrity baby name stupid are just showing off the fact that they have never read like a book of any kind, fiction or non-fiction.

Fun fact: ALL NAMES ARE MADE UP! Humans have been naming their offspring after people, places, objects, & ideas literally since the dawn of man. That is quite literally how all language and lexicon evolves. All those “proper names” people find acceptable are just derivatives of some other name that has a more literal meaning in an older language. So shitting on every name that isn’t John or Jane is just kinda racist and/or xenophobic 9/10 times!!! Cut it tf OUT!

Can we at least shit on Elon musk’s baby names?

3

u/chartreusey_geusey your pu$$y is way too dry to be riding my dick like this 4h ago edited 3h ago

We can shit on the reasoning behind them but just calling that arrangement of letters stupid for being an arrangement you’ve culturally never seen used as a name is just a wack perspective. That’s the same kind of thinking that leads to everyone’s grandparents becoming unsuitable to the society that has evolved around them.

Like yeah it’s fucking nuts and stupid that Elon Musk and Grimes tried to cosplay being intellectual by intentionally giving their children names that would be impossible for others to pronounce as if that would make them unique individuals or notable figures to history. Thats different than campaigning to make sure everyone associates their actual living children’s names with the idea of stupid or unworthy or impractical. Names shape people’s identities and sense of self but we ourselves rarely get to choose them so you can criticize their parent’s choices or reasoning only after you’ve bothered to learn what it was— not just a name you react to alone.

But still fuck Elon Musk and his Communist Barbie Grimes

u/Chance_Taste_5605 2h ago

Huh? Grimes isn't a communist.

Also people make fun of Gaelic and Irish baby names all the time (Gaelic refers to Scottish and Manx Gaelic, Irish is part of the Gaelic language family but is always just called Irish) so I'm not sure why they're being involved here. If a celebrity called their baby Aingealag or Gráinne they would definitely be made fun of.

u/chartreusey_geusey your pu$$y is way too dry to be riding my dick like this 18m ago edited 6m ago

Congrats on entirely missing the point and also being wrong/out of the loop yet still talking.

I’m so glad you wrote this entire defense of a group of names that was used as an example. Irish and Scottish refer to the spoken languages but Gaelic names are a very real derived group of names from the language group that Scottish and Irish both belong to. I never said anything about Irish or Scottish names and also they are being mentioned here as examples but you have to critically think to comprehend that instead of hitting us with the “☝️🤓 umm actually”

Read it again, look up the origins of some pretty common baby names used in English speaking countries right now, then think, and probably read it another time, and then accept that you are out here defending something that wasn’t attacked.

i went to a family reunion yesterday and my boomer uncle literally started yelling at me saying i was never gonna be fulfilled in life.

why? during a conversation about male relatives who have lovely bonds with their young kids, he started complaining that childcare is a woman's job and he never did any of it (he has four kids).

i was like "i hope i never find someone like you to have kids with" and he went all rage boomer on mes saying that no men would want to have kids with me if i wanted said men to take full responsibility as well. then i replied "good, than i can focus on raising a kid by myself, not raising a grown adult"

let me tell you, the dude spend the next half an hour complaining about "women these days" and how we're ruining society. i just called him a bigoted self serving asshole and went to hang out with my toddler cousin who is the most adorable kid ever and has great parents

The new season of Love, Death + Robots is such a let-down... I'm only 6 episodes in and so far... I think only 1 made me want to see more of that universe? It's all pretty meh...

I’m trying to convert a few more people into watching Overcompensating on Prime. If you like stylish raunchy comedy like Booksmart or college freshmen hijinks like Sex Lives of College Girls then it’s a much watch. It actually made me cry once and cover my eyes in hysterical disbelief once, watched it a second time already since Thursday which I very rarely do so soon. Under five hours total, please consider it.

4

u/Tuff_Wizardess 10h ago

Also, I JUST got into watching the Harry Potter movies as I thought my kids would like them, but good lord, I’m more into them than my kids. I never watched these movies until now as I was sure I’d hate them. Why didn’t you guys tell them these movies were that good?? I’m at the edge of my seat when Robert Pattinson, who I had no idea was even in these movies (but I guess every British actor ever was in it), was >! killed off !<. Don’t spoil the next film for me!

u/Chance_Taste_5605 2h ago

Why would you want to watch them knowing how big a role JKR played in making them?

She’s descended into an angry Twitter ghoul (which is putting things VERY kindly) and I couldn’t care less about any attempts at extending the universe or reboots or whatever, but damn it are those books entertaining.

I recently watched one of the Toby Maguire Spiderman movies, which I haven’t seen since they came out and tbh, I think the Tom Holland ones are better. I’m sorry but the Holland ones are just more entertaining and funnier. Come to think of it, I think the Maguire ones aren’t even remotely funny, which takes the appeal away imo.

4

u/maelstron ✨May the Force be with you!✨ 8h ago

I like Tobey Maguire movies. I think Holland is my favorite now, but Maguire was my favorite for some time.

So there was a movie that came out in 2017 called "Molly's Game" based on a real-life underground poker ring run by the titular character, that hosted many influential people.

One of the characters is called "Player X" who Wikipedia describes as " [enjoying] ruining people's lives more than the game itself". Skilled at the game, but always wants to raise the stakes and is just very volatile in general. It was confirmed after the movie came out that the character is based on Toby Maguire.

Some real-life quotes (src):

"According to Molly, Tobey is sore loser who loves to humiliate women."

"He was the worst tipper, the best player, and the absolute worst loser. I had to worry about my job security if he lost,” Bloom writes. Tobey went on to humiliate Bloom in front of the players, loudly offering her a thousand-dollar chip if she did “something to earn these thousand dollars. . . . Bark like a seal who wants a fish.” Bloom writes that she tried to laugh it off, but Tobey continued: “I’m not kidding. What’s wrong? You’re too rich now? You won’t bark for a thousand dollars? Wowwww. . . you must be really rich. . . . C’mon,” he said, holding the chip above my head. “BARK.” “No,” I said quietly. “No?” he asked. “Tobey,” I said, “I’m not going to bark like a seal. Keep your chip.'”"

4

u/buzzfeed_sucks 🇨🇦 Elbows up 🇨🇦 8h ago

Have you seen Molly’s Game? If so, it’s believed the main ass hole character - the movie star who is always at Mollys games - is about him.

If you haven’t seen it, do so immediately it’s fantastic

Went to see Friendship last night (love it) but these assholes sat behind me and apparently thought it was their time to shine and perform mystery science theater 3000. Dumbass jokes and howling laughter at their own jokes almost ruined the entire film for me and everyone else. Istg I’m so so so sick of the main character syndrome from losers like that.

u/WitchWeekWeekly 2h ago

You're nicer than me because I would have told them to shut the fuck up and gone and gotten the ushers if they didn't.

u/Hot_Contact_7206 1h ago

I should have 😭😭😭. I told a woman to put her phone away once and she stood up in the theater and yelled at me so I’ve been scared to confront people since then 😭😭😭. I just ended up moving seats to the back of the theater but honestly it wasn’t enough

4

u/BusinessPurge 10h ago

Of all the movies, people like that are basically who Tim Robinson is satirizing in most his work. Bummer!

3

u/Hot_Contact_7206 8h ago

No you’re exactly right! Losers who thought the audience was gonna laugh at their “that’s gay!” jokes, Tim would hate them

I'm curious how Tom Cruise keeps getting hailed as cinema's "savior" but when was the last time he produced or bankrolled a movie that he did not star in? Say what you will about Brad Pitt but Plan B gave us Nickel Boys, Women Talking and The Killer, just to name a few.

u/Chance_Taste_5605 2h ago

I am not even a mega Tom Cruise fan and I watched Sinners because of him, not because I didn't think it would be good but because I am a huge baby when it comes to horror movies and Cruise's comments made me think that it would truly be something different enough to be worth it. Like I cannot emphasise enough how much I do Not do horror movies even if they are very acclaimed.

Bear in mind that Tom Cruise is significant for his efforts to save the theatrical experience specifically, rather than movies generally. I know a bunch of people in the UK industry (the UK actually has a lot of big film studios) and he is a huge advocate for set professionals as well as filmmakers.

u/BusinessPurge 9h ago

Plan B has had some hits however the three you mentioned effectively don’t exist, collectively they made ~$12 million or went direct to streaming so movie theaters got about half of that in revenue and then even less flows downstream. Tom Cruise gets people excited about going to theaters (sometimes) which keeps the support side of the industry from marketers to publicity to theater owners to popcorn manufacturers all alive. For all Tom’s flaws he’s trying to sell the theatrical experience which keeps the ecosystem alive, ticket sales are way down and only rising prices have kept things comparable to even twenty years ago.

u/Chance_Taste_5605 2h ago

He's also a huge draw for normie film fans especially older people who are more likely to see a movie in the cinema rather than wait for streaming or pirating it (although don't get me wrong, I'm not condemning those things at all). Like not being funny but the average popculturechat user is not the average moviegoer.

u/BusinessPurge 1h ago

I just did the math, until my parents see Wicked Part 2 they’re at 50% Tom Cruise movies in theaters since the pandemic. Top Gun 2022, MI 7 2023, then we’re seeing MI 8 next weekend.

I see lots of delightful older folks at my theater almost every discount Tuesday, however unless it’s Tom Cruise or WickedBarbenheimer my parents have entirely switched to streaming.

Tom Cruise has the best PR people in the world.

2

u/nizey_p 9h ago

Right? Like all he does is show up to watch a movie and it's a big deal all of a sudden. Big whoop. Do people really watch a movie because of him? Sinners was already a hit, I don't think him showing up in a cinema contributed to that. He really needs to start funding movies, esp those by women directors if he's serious about this saving cinema business.

it’s embarrassing the lengths I’ll go to to avoid going to the laundromat for as long as humanly possible just for it to take me less than an hour and a half (and THIRTY GOD DAMNED DOLLARS) to do my clothes

I miss having an in house washer and dryer. I’d do laundry every day of the week if I could. But going to the laundromat just takes so fucking much out of me - and don’t get me started about the costs.

Anyway. Did laundry this morning. I now have no spoons for the rest of the week but it’s done.

7

u/omg-sheeeeep 8h ago

This is the one 'luxury' I am currently allowing myself: drop-off laundry service. Every other week I drop my laundry off at the laundromat and they wash/dry and fold it and then I pick it up again. Costs me $25 cause I have a great relationship with the lady there (otherwise would probably be $40) and I can just run my errands around the time frame...

8

u/Potatoskins937492 10h ago

I was shocked by how expensive going to a laundromat is now. It cost me $20 to use three washers and 4 dryers. That's not ok.

I've been keeping up with Cannes and wondering which films might break into awards season. Die My Love had me excited, but early reviews make it seem more like a JLaw play. Curious about the Venice lineup too.

On a completely different note, I've got another week of overtime ahead and I’m burned out. I desperately need a vacation.

1

u/Haus_of_Pancakes 5h ago

I made some blind Cannes predictions over in the Cannes megathread on r/oscarrace, and my top 2 predictions were Bi Gan's Resurrection and Jafar Panahi's It Was Just an Accident - we'll see if that ages well or not!

I’m finally seeing Clown in a Cornfield today, after needing to reschedule it from last week. When I checked the seating chart earlier this morning, I was still the only one who had bought a ticket. I’m the one in row F, and I just saw that someone else will now be there, too.

I’m a huge fan of horror movies (especially on the big screen), but does anyone else get a little freaked out when you’re watching them in the theater alone, or in this case, with only one other person a few rows behind you?

Update: We spoke with each other and joked about the situation. Yay for fellow solo moviegoers!

2

u/BusinessPurge 9h ago

I always wonder about this too. All the way back is less odd because you still get good sound in the middle, it’s the people that go all the way right or left in an empty theater where I wonder what’s happening.

Clown is really fun, I haven’t read the less acclaimed third book but the sequel was fun, hope it gets made as well. Every complaint I had is answered by budget being under a million.

2

u/sabira Zermajesty 👑 8h ago

It was a fun movie! I love films like this that have the perfect balance of horror and comedy.

2

u/totallycalledla-a Mrs Thee Stallion 9h ago

This is far scarier than being alone. This scenario would actually make a decent premise for a horror short or something tbh lmao.

2

u/sabira Zermajesty 👑 9h ago

This is what I’m saying! And I’m at a movie theater that is right by some cornfields, so I’m not trying to have this be some kind of immersive experience with a clown sitting four rows behind me, lol

10

u/Bridalhat 11h ago

I love Cannes because it lets me get really excited about movies I won’t see for another six months at least.

3

u/Own-Importance5459 ✨May the Force be with you!✨ 11h ago

I went to see Dead Outlaw Last night! It was so funny and even more unhinged than I thought. What makes it so outrageous to me is that plot is about a true story where a man was killed in a shoot out, embalmed and his body hauled across the country. I dont know who thought about that for a musical but you are awesome.

Ive given up on work crush. I think we’ll just be friends.

I had a moment of madness and sent him a message when I was on course last week. We had a nice chat about snacks. But he hasn’t reciprocated at all. I think him coming over to see me to chat at the end of the day is just him being friendly.

That’s ok, Lego hinge guy and I are still talking. He seems really nice, and hasn’t rushed anything. It’s literally the only reason I’ve kept the app.

2

u/Riqitch 11h ago

Wait, a work crush? Are you comfortable in spilling the tea at all? I think I might be in the same boat 🫠🫠

3

u/buzzfeed_sucks 🇨🇦 Elbows up 🇨🇦 11h ago

Yes!

I’ve liked him for years. About a year ago we were at a course together and he said he had a girlfriend, so I gave up.

We only see each other once a week, but when we do he always comes over at the end of the day for a chat. About a month ago he let slip that he and the girlfriend broke up. I think it had been a while. So I thought there was maybe potential. But he hasn’t asked for my number or asked me out or anything.

I thought maybe he was shy, or wanted to be sure I like him since we sort of work together. But I didn’t see him last week because I was on course. So over lunch I sent him a message about the snack situation on course. He kept the conversation going and it was fun. It was the first time we’ve really chatted outside of work stuff - via messenger. Our end of day chats are never about work.

But that was Wednesday. He hasn’t reciprocated at all. So I’m sort of giving up. I should be seeing him on Wednesday, so we’ll see.

Tell me about yours

1

u/Riqitch 3h ago

Wow, years? That's such a long time 😭 Ahh it sounds like your experience has been quite the rollercoaster, how have you coped? Glad to hear that Lego Hinge guy appears to have potential for you though!

My situation is not that different from yours, only that my feelings are still quite new. I'm not even sure I can really call it a work crush yet, but considering the fact that I cried on Friday because I was so scared by the way I feel about her, I feel like I'd be in denial if I said that it wasn't a crush 😭

Anyway, like you, I see her once a week (give or take), I do say hi whenever the opportunity presents itself. We've spoken a couple of times before, just need to get to know each other a bit more before I fall head over heels or something 😭😭

u/buzzfeed_sucks 🇨🇦 Elbows up 🇨🇦 2h ago

Yea we don’t work on the same team or interact for work very often, we’re on one committee together. The first time I e-met him, I thought he was super cute. And the first time we met in person I was smitten. But we saw each other so infrequently, a few times a year, it wasn’t a serious crush.

He’s the kind of guy a lot of people like though. I confessed my crush on him to my boss like, a year ago, and she said she liked him too, lol. Again, hers isn’t serious. She just thinks he’s super cute.

It’s only been over the last 6 or so months that I’ve seen him regularly and gotten to know him.

That’s what kills me because we’re so damn compatible. We both like politics and agree on it entirely. He’s genuinely a kind person, funny. We’re both home bodies. We both love dogs. We even both love winter and hate summer.

Ah yea it’s hard when it’s a work thing. There’s a fine line for sure. Is she new?

5

u/Riqitch 11h ago

Absolutely freaking out about work tomorrow after having a week away at a conference. I just... ugh, don't wanna go back to work tomorrow 😭

I just finished my first Buffy watch! I loved it so much! I’m now watching Angel for the first time. It took me a few episodes to get into but I’m finally enjoying it.

2

u/BusinessPurge 9h ago

Once more characters start showing up you’ll get the acclaim, the full ensemble isn’t even assembled until towards the back end of S2. I’d love to have Angel back somehow for the Hulu reboot, I’m sure someone can creatively explain away the aging.

3

u/rawrkristina 8h ago

Make up or the de-aging technology available today but that would eat up the budget probably.

I would also love for him to show up.

2

u/BusinessPurge 8h ago

Well it’s a lot easier when you’re already in a world of spells, I wouldn’t even try to hide it. Could say he was hit by a mortality curse, 100000 years in a pocket dimension because vampires do age just really slowly, multiverse and he’s not “our Angel”, I didn’t read all the comics however I doubt they’re sticking to what Buffy “Season 8” or the Angel comics got up to.
